    School District and your substitute role. Nothing in this Handbook creates or is intended to createa contract of employment, either expressed or implied. You are a call in employee of theDistrict and your relationship with the District may be terminated by you or the District at

    any time, with or without cause.

    Please note that you are subject to the policies of the Districts Board of Education. Some, butnot all, of those policies are summarized in this Handbook. In the event that a Board ofEducation policy and/or applicable law conflicts with a provision in this Handbook, the policyand/or law shall control.

    Substitute Duty Hours

    The substitute teacher shall be expected to be on duty the entire school day (including conferenceperiods, if applicable) and to perform all duties of the regular teacher. (From 15 minutes prior tothe beginning of school until 15 minutes after students are dismissed.) Individual campuscircumstances may require the assignment of a substitute for only a portion of the school day.

    Substitutes are also subject to reassignment during the day.

    At the beginning of each teaching day, the substitute should go to the school office and sign in.Failure to sign will result in the delay of the substitute receiving a paycheck.

    Removal from the Substitute Roster

    Substitutes may be removed from the substitute roster at their request or based upon request(s)

    from building administrators that substitutes not return to their respective buildings followingincidents of poor performance. Substitutes will be given a verbal warning prior to a writtenwarning before removal from a school building. A letter of dismissal will be issued to substituteand placed in their personnel file if found with two or more warning letters. A copy dismal letterwill be sent to the superintendent of schools recommending removal from substitute call list.

    Cell Phone Usage

    Please do not make or receive cell phone calls during classroom instructional time. To insurethat students will not be disrupted during class time, cell phones should be on silent or vibrateduring school hours.

    School Law on Discipline and Authority

    Title 18A: 6-1 Corporal Punishment of Pupils

    No person employed or engaged in a school or educational institution, whether public orprivate, shall inflict or cause to be inflicted corporal punishment upon a pupil attending suchschool or institution; but any such person may, within the scope of his employment, use andapply such amounts of force as is reasonable and necessary

    (1) to quell a disturbance threatening physical injury to others;(2) to obtain possession of weapons or other dangerous objects upon

    the person or within control of a pupil;(3) for the purpose of self defense; and(4) for the protection of persons or property;

    and such acts, or any of them shall not be construed to constitute corporal punishment within themeaning and intendments of this section. Every resolution, by law, rule ordinance, or other act orauthority permitting or authorizing corporal punishment to be inflicted upon a pupil attending aschool or educational institution shall be void.

    Title 18A: 25-2 Authority Over Pupils

    A teacher or other person in authority over such pupils shall hold every pupil accountable fordisorderly conduct in school and during recess and on the playgrounds of the school and on theway to and from school.

    TEASING AND HARASSMENT

    Students in Bordentown schools are expected to treat one another with respect regardless ofgender, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. Inappropriatetouching, gender biased or racial comments and/or jokes, and name calling of any kind are not

    permitted on the way to and from school or on school property. All instances of suchharassment will be reported to the building administration. Parents will be contacted andappropriate action will be taken. Interventions include, but are not limited to, supportivecounseling, detentions, suspensions, and or contacting district and local authorities.     Dear Substitute Teacher,

    Welcome to the Bordentown Regional School District! As a substitute teacher, you are a veryvital member of our instructional staff. When a regular teacher is absent, you as the substituteteacher, are called upon to carry on daily instructions and guide the children throughout the day.This manual has been composed for the explicit purpose of clarifying and delineating the variousaspects of the daily functioning of substitute teaching in Bordentown Regional Middle School.

    It has been prepared as a result of suggestions offered by substitute and regular teachers andprovides an outline of procedures and helpful information regarding your responsibilities. Byreviewing this manual, it is hoped that each substitute teacher can better meet the demands ofteaching with less anxiety.

    We urge you to see any member of the administrative staff if you have any questions concerningsubstitute procedures. Please use the phone in the classroom to call the office if you have anyclassroom concerns. Wishing you a wonderful teaching experience at Bordentown RegionalMiddle School!

    Reporting to School

    As a substitute teacher, you are taking over the duties of the regular classroom teacher for theentire school day. You should report to the main office of your assigned school by 7:35 a.m.

    where you will be given instructions as to lessons plans, daily schedule, lunch period, and anyduties you will complete in the absence of the regular teacher.

    Your Responsibilities

    As a substitute teacher, you will assume all the daily responsibilities of the teacher whom youreplace.

    As is the case with the regular teacher, you are in full charge of the students. Please keep thefollowing extremely important points in mind. A good substitute:

    1. Never leaves your students unsupervised. Students are to be under the activesupervision of school personnel at all times. Students are not to be alone in

    classrooms at any time. Whenever one or more students are in a classroom, they

    are to be overseen by a teacher or aide.2. Takes firm control over the class without threats.3. Makes every effort to complete the work and/or assignments that are provided by the

    regular teacher.4. Interacts with students in a favorable manner, circulates among the students in the

    classroom as they work. Does not sit behind the desk.5. Conducts him/her self in a manner which demonstrates an enjoyment of teaching.

    6. Doesnt lose self-control.7. Gives pupils a positive impression of helpfulness and not of merely marking time.8. Maintains a proper learning environment and refers individual students to the

    administrative staff when he/she becomes an impediment to this process.

    Disruptive students are not to remain in the classroom. Should you encounter any student whochallenges your authority, he/she is to be sent to the office with a noteexplaining the situation.(Each classroom permits immediate contact with the office through the use of the telephone,extension 2000 which is usually located near the door.) Simply pick up the phone on the wall bythe classroom door and dial 2000, 2008, 2011 or 2003.

    Student Guidebook

    If you find yourself substituting regularly in the Bordentown Regional School District, it issuggested that you review copies of both the Staff Manual and Student Guidebook. Thesetwo volumes will enable you to become familiar with staff responsibilities, along withexpectations of student behavior, which are too numerous to include in this guidebook.

    Harassment

    Dear Substitute Teacher;

    Welcome to MacFarland Intermediate School! You provide a very important service to

    us when you accept the responsibility for carrying on the instructional programs for our

    children during the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

    This handbook has been prepared to help you have a productive day and to familiarize

    you with procedures within the building. The guide is organized into three sections:

    General information about the building and instructional programs

    General School Procedures

    Pupil supervision

    Part three also includes some specific details of classroom routines provided by the

    teacher for who you are substituting. An index for easy reference to specific items

    follows part three.

    We at MacFarland Intermediate School value the services you provide for us and hope

    that this manual will help make your assignment productive and enjoyable. Please feel

    free to ask any member of our team custodial, clerical, paraprofessional, teaching,

    and/or administrative for clarification or for more detailed information.

    PART I

    Substitute Responsibilities

    Again, welcome to the MacFarland Intermediate School. As a substitute, you are an

    important member of our instructional staff. In a regular teachers absence, you are calledupon to carry on daily instruction and guide the children throughout the day. We thank

    you in advance for your efforts.

    administrative staff only when they become an impediment to this process.

    Disruptive students are not to remain in the classroom. Should you encounter any student

    who challenges your authority, they are to be sent to the Office with a note explaining the

    situation. Each classroom permits immediate contact with the office through by using the

    telephone in the classroom and dialing the Office Extension 5213.

    PART II

    General School Procedures/Problem Solvers

    After School ActivitiesIf you have any questions as to whether or not after school activitieswill be held, please contact

    the office for information. Children who request information relative to programs or their after

    school arrangements should be sent to the office. This is most important.

    A-V/Equipment

    Please check the teachers lesson plans for the day and contact the media specialist, librarian, in

    the library prior to 8:25 a.m. should the plans require the use of a projector, VCR, overhead,

    filmstrips, or videocassette equipment. Students are not permitted to move A-V equipmentwithin the building.

    Bus Students

    Bus students are dismissed after the students who walk to school or go to Child Care. Therefore,

    please make certain that all bus students are dismissed no later than 3:15 p.m. Child Care

    students and walkers dismiss at 3:15 p.m. Bus students leave the classroom at 3:17 p.m.

    Cafeteria

    The cafeteria provides nutritious lunches at a reasonable cost. Your lunch period is shown on

    your daily schedule. The teachers room located on the third floor is for your dining. See theattached lunch schedule for specific grade level information. Students are to be activelysupervised in the cafeteria. In emergency situations you may be asked to supervise one of theseareas.

    Contacting the Office

    Each classroom has a phone. Just dial 5213 and you will get the secretary in the main office.

    Custodians

    Should you have an emergency in your room requiring custodial assistance, please contact themain office via the phone.

    Dress

    Proper attire is required for substitute teachers. Unless a substitute is replacing a PE teacher, no

    shorts permitted to be worn by staff members or other inappropriate attire is to be worn.

    Duty Schedule

    As you sign-in, please check with the main office to determine if the teacher you are substitutingfor has a duty assignment. Bus duty encompasses covering the front of the building for late

    buses.

    Evacuation Plans

    Please be sure when entering the classroom to locate the white evacuation binder. Pleasefamiliarize yourself with the information prior to the start of the day.

    Fire Drill Procedure

    The fire exit diagram located near the classroom door shows the appropriate exit for your

    classroom. Pleasefamiliarize yourself with this information prior to the beginning of the school

    day. Windows and doors should be closed and lights out. You will need to account for every

    child before returning to the building.

    Inclement Weather Following Lunch

    An envelope with blue paper will state it is an indoor day and be posted on the hallway walls.

    Injuries

    Should a child suffer any appearance of a serious injury, contact the office immediately. Do not

    move the child.

    Our school nurse is located on the first floor. Students expressing illness should be sent to thenurse with a brief note of explanation.

    Plans and Daily Assignments

    All substitutes should have clearly outlined plans and assignments for their classes. The plans

    should be checkedprior to the beginning of school in order to insure understanding of material

    to be covered and procedures to be followed during the day. If plans are incomplete or materials

    unavailable, please contact the office. A daily master schedule is attached to this booklet. Please

    check this master schedule to verify your schedule for each day you are substituting.

    PART III

    Pupil Supervision

    Students are to be under active supervision of school personnel at all times. Students are not tobe alone in classrooms at any time. Whenever one or more students are in a classroom, they are

    to be overseen by a teacher or aide.

    Students are also to be actively supervised on the playground and in the cafeteria. In some

    situations, you may be asked to supervise one of these areas. Students have been instructed to

    get adult assistance when they have problems on the playground. If a child asks for your help,

    go with them to investigate the problem, intervene, or contact the office to request assistance

    from an administrator.

    Playground Rules

    No rough play allowed on the playground. Students who threaten the safety of otherswill not be allowed on the playground.

    Do not interfere with games and equipment of other students.

    Organized sports games can be played at the discretion of the playground supervisors.Students who play rough will be excluded.

    Student Dress Code

    It is critical that both home and school cooperate in the matter of school attire. Students may

    wear clothing, hairstyles and personal decorations which suit their individual sense of style and

    taste. However, clothing, accessories and/or decorations, which interfere with order or harmony

    or distract from the educational program will not be allowed. Inappropriate dress can be

    disruptive or distracting to the educational process and the school administration reserves the

    right to make the final decision regarding appropriate dress in school. The regulations regarding

    student attire are as follows:

    Student attire should be school appropriate, neat, clean and reflecting an appearance ofmodesty, clothing with inappropriate pictures, liquor advertisements, sexually suggestivemessages, profanity, tobacco, gang affiliation slogans,

    Offensive or obscene symbols, signs or slogans, degrading any race, societal group color,creed, religion, gender, ancestry, national origin, social or economical status, sexualorientation or people with disabilities is not permitted,

    Buttons, pins and other accessories are permitted, as long as they comply with the abovementioned regulations and do not cause disruption, disorder, or a danger,

    Bare midriff, crop tops which expose the abdominal area, halter-tops, spaghetti straps,tube tops, and tank tops with straps that are less than one inch wide are not permitted,

    Clothing which is extremely tight or transparent is not permitted, Very short shorts, very short skirts and/or very short culottes are not permitted, Shorts should be worn only when it is temperature appropriate, No apparel which reveals undergarments or promotes immodesty is permitted, Sneakers with backs are always to be worn when in gym, Articles which can cause damage to other students and/or property, are not permitted, Radios, tapes or CD players are not allowed, No hats are to be worn in school, If flip flops, or backless shoes are worn, students must bring an additional set of shoes to

    participate in recess and physical education class. No pajama bottoms are permitted.

    Students who are in violation of the dress code will be sent to the office and given an

    opportunity to change into more appropriate dress. If a student does not have a change of

    clothing, he or she will be asked to call home to request a change of clothes to be brought to the

    building. The student will not be allowed to return to class until dressed appropriately.

    permitted on the way to and from school or on school property. All instances of such

    harassment must be reported to the classroom teacher and administration, as per stated in Board

    Policy 4105. Parents will be contacted and appropriate action will be taken. Interventions

    include, but are not limited to: contacting district and local authorities, supportive counseling,

    detentions, and suspensions. Contact the Affirmative Action Officer at 298-0025, ext. 1202, or

    school administration for further information.

    Consequences

    Students who do not follow the rules will have consequences for their misbehavior.

    Punishments will vary according to the frequency and severity of the misbehavior.

    Consequences may include detentions at lunchtime, before or after school detention, loss of

    school activities, in-school suspension, and out-of-school suspension.

    Parents will receive a Notice of Disciplinary Action, letter, or telephone call whenever adetention or more severe punishment is given. Disciplinary notices must be signed by a

    parent/guardian and returned to school the next day. Further disciplinary action may be taken, if

    a student fails to return the notices unsigned or late. Parents may appeal a suspension to the

    principal. This should occur immediately so a decision can be rendered before the suspension

    begins.

    Welcome to Clara Barton School! You provide a very important service to us when you

    accept the responsibility for carrying on the instructional programs for our children

    during the absence of the regular classroom teacher.

    This handbook has been prepared to help you have a productive day and to familiarize

    you with procedures within the building. The guide is organized into three sections:

    PART I

    Substitute Responsibilities

    As a substitute, you are an important member of our instructional staff. In aregular teachersabsence, you are called upon to carry on daily instruction and guide thechildren throughout the day. We thank you in advance for your efforts.

    As in the case with the regular teacher, you are in full charge of the students. Please

    keep the following extremely important points in mind.

    A great substitute:

    1.

    NEVER leaves the students unsupervised.2. Takes FIRM, POSITIVE control over the class.3. Makes EVERY effort to complete the work assigned by the regular teacher.4. Interacts with students in a FAVORABLE manner.5. Maintains SELF CONTROL.6. Conducts themselves in a manner which demonstrates the ENJOYMENT of

    teaching.7. Gives pupils a POSITIVE impression of helpfulness and not of merely marking

    student who challenges your authority, they are to be sent to the Main Office with a

    note explaining the situation. Each classroom permits immediate contact with the office

    by using the telephone in the classroom and dialing the Front Office and dialing

    extension 3102.

    PARTII

    General School Procedures/Problem Solvers

    After School Activities

    If you have any questions as to whether or not after school activitieswill be held,

    please contact the office for information. Children who request information relative to

    programs or their after school arrangements should be sent to the office. This is most

    important!

    A-V/Equipment

    Please check the teachers lesson plans for the day secure necessary equipment prior to8:25 a.m.should the plans require the use of a projector, VCR, overhead, filmstrips, or

    videocassette equipment. Students are not permitted to move A-V equipment within

    the building.

    Bus Students

    Students are dismissed at 3:15pm. Bus students are to report to the All Purpose Room

    and are escorted by teachers and aides who are assigned Bus Duty. You are to walk

    the rest of the class down for dismissal on the back playground.

    Cafeteria

    The cafeteria provides nutritious lunches at a reasonable cost. Your lunch period isshown on your daily schedule. The teachers room is located on the first floor is foryour dining. K/1stGrade lunch is from 11:00-11:45am. 2nd/3rdgrade lunch isfrom 11:45-12:30pm. Students are to be actively supervised in the cafeteria. Inemergency situations you may be asked to supervise one of these areas.

    Contacting the Office

    Each classroom has a telephone. Using this phone, dial 3102 to contact the Main

    Office.

    CustodiansShould you have an emergency in your room requiring custodial assistance, pleasecontact the main office via the phone.

    Dress

    Proper attire is required for substitute teachers. Unless a substitute is replacing a PE

    teacher, no shorts permitted to be worn by staff members or other inappropriate attire

    is to be worn.

    Duty Schedule

    As you sign-in, please check with the main office to determine if the teacher you are

    substituting for has a duty assignment.

    Evacuation Plans

    Please be sure when entering the classroom to locate the white evacuation binder.

    Please familiarize yourself with the information prior to the start of the day.

    Fire Drill Procedure

    The attached diagram shows the appropriate exit for your classroom. Familiarize

    yourself with this information prior to the beginning of the school day. Windows and

    doors should be closed and lights out. You will need to account for every child before

    returning to the building.

    Inclement Weather Following Lunch

    An announcement will be made from the office by 10:55 a.m. notifying all staff of thedecision (inside or outside).

    Injuries

    Should a child suffer any appearance of a serious injury, contact the office immediately.Do not move the child should there be a head injury or the possibility of any brokenbones.

    Plans and Daily Assignments

    All substitutes should have clearly outlines plans and assignments for their classes. The

    plans should be checked prior to the beginning of school in order to insureunderstanding of material to be covered and procedures to be followed during the day.

    If plans are incomplete or materials unavailable, please contact the office and so

    indicateon the substitute report. A daily master schedule is attached to this booklet.

    Please check this master schedule to verify your schedule for each day you are

    substituting.

    Reporting to School

    Substitutes are to report to the Main Office by 8:20 a.m. You will be given your

    assignment for the day along with any special instructions. At that time, you will beasked to sign an attendance card which will ensure proper payment for your services.

    Student Illness or Injury

    The school is staffed with a nurse. This office is located on the first floor, around the

    corner from the All Purpose Room.

    Illness: Students complaining of illness should be sent to the nurse using

    the appropriate pass. Please use your good judgment to determine thisneed. In case of serious illness, notify the office to send a nurse to yourroom.

    Injury: If injury requires a nurses attention, send the child to the nursesoffice, or contact the office to have a nurse come to your room.

    Accidents: In case of accidental injuries in class or on the playground,you will be requested to fill out an accident report giving details of theincident. Please complete this form and return it to a nurse before leavingthe building. It is also important to leave a note for the regular teacher.

    Fire Drills: State law requires two fire drills per month. Signs indicatingprimary and alternate fire exit routes are posted in each classroom.

    Please familiarize yourself with these routes before students arrive.Students are expected to be silent and to follow directions whenever thefire alarm sounds. It is your responsibility to take the teachers gradebook and to take attendance when you are safely outside. In addition,you are to take the green and red card with you outside. Onceattendance is taken, if you have any children missing or extra children

    from another class, show the RED side of the card. If all students arepresent, show the GREEN side of the card.

    Students who are away from their class when the alarm sounds have been instructed to

    exit the building at the nearest exit and to report the teacher closest to that exit.

    PART III

    Pupil Supervision

    Students are to be under active supervision of school personnel at all times. Students

    are not to be alone in classrooms at any time. Whenever one or more students are in aclassroom, they are to be overseen by a teacher or aide.

    Students are also to be actively supervised on the playground and in the cafeteria. In some

    situations, you may be asked to supervise one of these areas. Students have been instructed

    to get adult assistance when they have problems on the playground. If a child asks for your

    help, go with them to investigate the problem, intervene, or contact the office to request

    assistance from an administrator.

    School Law on Discipline and Authority

    TITLE 18A:6-1 Corporal Punishment of Pupils

    No person employed or engaged in a school or educational institution,

    whether public or private, shall inflict or cause to be inflicted corporal

    punishment upon a pupil attending such school or institution; but any

    such person may, within the scope of his employment, use and apply

    such amounts of force as is reasonable and necessary:

    (1) to quell a disturbance threatening physical injury toothers;

    (2) to obtain possession of weapons or other dangerousobjects upon the person or within control of a pupil;

    (3) for the purpose of self defense; and(4) for the protection of persons or property;

    and such acts, or any of them shall not be construed to constitute

    corporal punishment within the meaning and intendment of this

    section. Every resolution, by law, rule, ordinance, or other act of

    General School Rules

    It is expected that all members of the Clara Barton School community behave in amanner that helps provide the appropriate atmosphere for learning. As such, we havetaken measures to instill positive character traits in students, the encouragement

    needed to make good choices showing respect for oneself and others as well as takingpride and ownership in the school. Our programs include but are not limited to school-wide character education, adult-student mentoring partnerships, clubs and activities,etc. In addition to fostering and promoting a positive school climate, committees suchas the Intervention and Referral Services Teammeet weekly to address student issues;both academic and behavioral. Teachers, parents and support personnel work togetherto develop positive plans of action for students in need of academic/behavioralremediation. These plans are implemented and revisited frequently in order to offerstudents the greatest possible degree of scholastic success.

    The CBS Student Code of Conduct is established to achieve the following purposes:

    1.) Foster the health, safety and social/emotional well being of students2.) Support the establishment and maintenance of civil, safe, secure, supportive and

    disciplined school environments conducive to learning3.) Promote achievement of high academic standards4.) Prevent the occurrence of problem behaviors5.) Establish parameters for the intervention and remediation of student behaviors at all

    stages of identification6.) Establish parameters for school responses to violations of the code of students

    conduct that take into account, at a minimum, the severity of offenses, thedevelopmental ages of the student offenders and students histories of inappropriate

    behaviors.

    Note the following: Students will be provided with advanced notification of the consequences for

    violating school rules. All discipline cases will be handled on an individual basis. All students will have the right to due process.

    HALL RULES

    Walk in the halls at all times.

    Walk on the right side of the hall.

    Be reasonably quiet when walking in the hallways, as instruction occurs throughoutthe day.

    Playground equipment is to be carried in the halls. Respect all students and teachers walking in the halls. Hands are to be kept at your sides.

    Any act willfully causing or attempting to cause damage to the Public AccessDefibrillator (PAD) or activation of a falsefire alarm will result in disciplinary action.

    CAFETERIA RULES

    Conduct yourself appropriately and follow the directions of cafeteria aides. Good manners are expected. Sit at an assigned table, and follow rules for getting lunch, milk and snacks. Stay in the cafeteria unless excused by a cafeteria or playground aide. Money lending and or sharing is not permitted.

    PLAYGROUND RULES

    No rough play allowed on the playground. Students who threaten the safety ofothers will not be allowed on the playground.

    Do not interfere with games and equipment of other students. Organized sports games can be played at the discretion of the playground

    supervisors. Students who play rough will be excluded.

    Students with crutches, casts or other medical conditions that may be aggravatedby physical activity; running, jumping, kicking etc. will be excluded from recess untilsuch time a physicians note is presented allowing them to resume normalactivities.*

    * The same applies to physical education classes.

    STUDENT DRESS CODE

    It is critical that both home and school cooperate in the matter of school attire.Students may wear clothing, hairstyles and personal decorations which suit theirindividual sense of style and taste. However, clothing, accessories and/or decorations,which interfere with order or harmony or distract from the educational program will notbe allowed. Inappropriate dress can be disruptive or distracting to the educationalprocess and the school administration reserves the right to make the final decisionregarding appropriate dress in school. The regulations regarding student attire are asfollows:

    Student attire should be school appropriate, neat, clean and reflecting an

    appearance of modesty, Clothing with inappropriate pictures, liquor advertisements, messages, profanity,

    tobacco, gang affiliation slogans,

    offensive or obscene symbols, signs or slogans degrading any race, societal groupcolor, creed, religion, gender, ancestry, national origin, social or economical status,sexual orientation or people with disabilities is not permitted,

    Buttons, pins and other accessories are permitted, as long as they comply with theabove mentioned regulations and do not cause disruption, disorder, or a danger,

    Bare midriff, crop tops which expose the abdominal area, halter-tops, spaghettistraps, tube tops, and tank tops with straps that are less than one inch wide are notpermitted,

    Clothing which is extremely tight or transparent is not permitted,

    Very short shorts, very short skirts and/or very short culottes are not permitted, Shorts should be worn only when it is temperature appropriate,

    No apparel which reveals undergarments or promotes immodesty is permitted,

    Sneakers with backs are always to be worn when in gym,

    Articles which can cause damage to other students and/or property, are notpermitted,

    No hats are to be worn in school

    Flip flops, slides (soccer sandals), heeled shoes, and clogs are notpermitted because of safety reasons (stairs, recess, etc.); Note: Studentsmay wear sandals with a secure back strap.

    No pajama bottoms are permitted.

    Students who are in violation of the dress code will be sent to the office and given anopportunity to change into more appropriate dress. If a student does not have achange of clothing, he or she will be asked to call home to request a change of clothesto be brought to the building. The student will not be allowed to return to class untildressed appropriately.

    GENERAL RULES

    Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited. This includes knives, capguns, water pistols, etc. Police will be notified of any kind brought toschool.

    Fighting is not permitted and will result in consequences. Courtesy and politeness are expected in your relationships with school staff

    members and classmates.

    Treat others as you want others to treat you. Profane, vulgar or threatening language will not be accepted. Selling of any items including candy, stickers, etc. is not permitted. Gum chewing or eating candy in the school or bus is not permitted. Snow, rocks, sticks, and other objects should not to be picked up, kicked, or

    thrown. Written or graphic material referring to or displaying violent nature is not permitted

    and will be confiscated. School authorities have the right to impose consequences on students for conduct

    away from school grounds including on a school bus or off campus student/schoolsponsored function.

    Cellular telephones, toys, trading cards, radios, CD players, I-Pods, breath spray,aerosol cans, paint balls, spray cans, matches/lighters, pagers, laser lights, etc.should not be brought to school. These items will be confiscated and returned onlyto a parent / guardian.

    Note: BRSD does not condone the possession and or use of cellular telephones bystudents. We strongly encourage parents to contact the school if there is an emergencyand they need to speak to their child. In addition, school phones may be used bystudents if there is an urgent need to contact a parent/guardian. Cellular Telephonesconfiscated from students will only be returned to parents following the first offense.Subsequent offenses will be considered willful/deliberate disobedience. Appropriatedisciplinary actions will be taken in such cases.

    ASSEMBLY RULES

    Assemblies and other special events are a privilege. Attendance at such programs maybe denied to students for inappropriate behavior or to those who owe assignments at thediscretion of the administration.

    Be respectful to staff, performers, speakers, and fellow students. Remain quiet and attentive. Remain seated. Use the restroom only if it is an emergency.

    Applaud and respond appropriately

    BUS RULES & PROCEDURES

    Riding the bus to/from school is a privilege. It is expected that all students cooperatewith the bus driver while traveling to and from school. Frequent or flagrant violationsof safety rules or regulations on the buses will result in disciplinary action by theadministration. Students who do not respond to disciplinary measures will be removedfrom the bus for a period of time, which may extend throughout the school year. Insuch cases, the parent of the child will become responsible for transporting the child toand from school.

    Students are to walk to the bus from the bus stop and from the school building. Upon finding their assigned seat, students are expected to sit down and fasten their

    safety belt Students may change seats on the bus only with the permission from the bus

    driver. Everyone must remain seated while the bus is in operation. On busesequipped with seat belts, the belts must be worn at all times. It is the LAW.

    Talking is permitted on the bus at a reasonable level. Shouting, whistling, use ofbad language, etc. is not permitted.

    Under no circumstances may pupils put their hands, arms, or heads out of thewindows of the bus.

    Pupils are expected to treat the buses with care. Eating/drinking is not permitted

    on the bus. Buses will stop to pick up and drop off pupils at designated bus stops only.

    Requests for stops other than designated stops cannot be honored. Students are to walk on the sidewalks, not on the grass of homeowners lawns.

    Safety is the rule at all times.

    Self Defense

    Self defense is an action to prevent injury to oneself. When a defensive action causesexcessive harm to the offender, or it is known to be the result of instigation by the

    claimant, such defensive action will be considered return aggression. RETURN

    AGGRESSION will incur the same consequence as mutually combative/assault related

    behavior.

    Teasing and Harassment

    Students in Bordentown schools are expected to treat one another with respect

    regardless of gender, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation.

    PART II

    General School Procedures

    Reporting to School

    Substitutes are to report to the Office of Student Services by 8:30 a.m. You will be

    given your assignment for the day along with any special instructions. At that time, you

    will be asked to sign an attendance card which will ensure proper payment for your

    services.

    Contacting the Office

    Each classroom has a telephone near the door. This will allow you to contact the main

    office. To contact the office, call ext. 4100. When someone responds, speak in a

    normal tone from anywhere in the room.

    Each classroom has a telephone. Using this phone, dial 4112 to contact the Office of

    Student Services and begin talking.

    Student Illness or Injury

    The school is staffed with a nurse, Mrs. Linda Eaton. Her office is located at the top of

    the ramps (Room 138).

    Illness: Students complaining of illness should be sent to the nurse usingthe appropriate pass. Please use your good judgment to determine thisneed. In case of serious illness, notify the office to send a nurse to yourroom.

    Injury: If injury requires a nurses attention, send the child to the nursesoffice, or contact the office to have a nurse come to your room.

    Accidents: In case of accidental injuries in class or on the playground,you will be requested to fill out an accident report giving details of theincident. Please complete this form and return it to a nurse before leaving

    the building. It is also important to leave a note for the regular teacher. Fire Drills: State law requires two fire drills per month. Signs indicating

    primary and alternate fire exit routes are posted in each classroom.Please familiarize yourself with these routes before students arrive.

    Students are expected to be silent and to follow directions whenever the fire alarm

    sounds. It is your responsibility to take the teachers grade book and to take

    attendance when you are safely outside. In addition, you are to take the green and red

    card with you outside. Once attendance is taken, if you have any children missing or

    extra children from another class, show the RED side of the card. If all students arepresent, show the GREEN side of the card.

    Students who are away from their class when the alarm sounds have been instructed to

    exit the building at the nearest exit and to report the teacher closest to that exit.

    PART III

    Pupil Supervision

    Students are to be under active supervision of school personnel at all times. Students

    are not to be alone in classrooms at any time. Whenever one or more students are in a

    classroom, they are to be overseen by a teacher or aide.

    Students are also to be actively supervised on the playground and in the cafeteria. In

    some situations, you may be asked to supervise one of these areas. Students have

    been instructed to get adult assistance when they have problems on the playground. If

    a child asks for your help, go with them to investigate the problem, intervene, or

    contact the office to request assistance from and administration.

    School Law on Discipline and Authority

    TITLE 18A:6-1 Corporal Punishment of Pupils

    No person employed or engaged in a school or educational

    institution, whether public or private, shall inflict or cause to be

    inflicted corporal punishment upon a pupil attending such school

    or institution; but any such person may, within the scope of his

    employment, use and apply such amounts of force as is

    reasonable and necessary:

    (1) to quell a disturbance threatening physical injury toothers;

    (2)

    to obtain possession of weapons or other dangerousobjects upon the person or within control of a pupil;

    (3) for the purpose of self defense; and(4) for the protection of persons or property;

    and such acts, or any of them shall not be construed to

    constitute corporal punishment within the meaning and

    intendment of this section. Every resolution, by law, rule,ordinance, or other act of authority permitting or authorizing

    corporal punishment to be inflicted upon a pupil attending a

    school or educational institution shall be void.

    TITLE 18A:25-2Authority Over Pupils

    A teacher or other person in authority over such pupils shall hold

    every pupil accountable for disorderly conduct in school and

    during recess and on the playgrounds of the school and on the

    way to and from school.

    General School Rules

    We expect all members of the Peter Muschal School community to behave in a manner

    that helps us provide the appropriate atmosphere for learning. Recognizing that our

    students are in a time of life when personal independence and self-expression are

    being sought, and when much social etiquette and conflict resolution strategies still

    need to be learned, the administration and teachers hold firmly to the belief that it isthe primary responsibility of the student body to assure that everyone finds Peter

    Muschal to be a school of peace and safety. To this end the professional staff agrees

    to support standards for civility, dress grooming and social interaction. Therefore, it is

    important to document some of the critical expectations for the student conduct and

    the consequences for disregarding them. The expectation for each student is to

    demonstrate respect for themselves, others and their environment at all times. Failure

    to do so will result in disciplinary action. Peter Muschal functions around two basic

    principles:

    RESPECT YOURSELF & OTHERS

    FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.

    Hall Rules

    Walk in the halls at all times.

    Walk on the right side of the hall. Be reasonably quiet when walking in the hallways, as instruction occurs

    throughout the day. Playground equipment is to be carried in the halls Respect all students and teachers walking in the halls

    Any act willfully causing or attempting to cause damage to the Public AccessDefibrilator (PAD) will result in disciplinary action.

    Cafeteria Rules

    Conduct yourself appropriately and follow the directions of cafeteria aides.

    Good manners are expected.

    Sit at your assigned homeroom table, and follow rules for getting lunch, milkand snacks.

    Stay in the cafeteria unless excused by a cafeteria or playground aide.

    Soda and candy are not permitted

    Playground Rules

    No rough play allowed on the playground. Students who threaten the safety of

    others will not be allowed on the playground.

    Do not interfere with games and equipment of other students. Organized sports games can be played at the discretion of the playground

    supervisors. Students who play rough will be excluded.

    Student Dress Code

    It is critical that both home and school cooperate in the matter of school attire.

    Students may wear clothing, hairstyles and personal decorations which suit their

    individual sense of style and taste. However, clothing, accessories and/or decorations,

    which interfere with order or harmony or distract from the educational program will not

    be allowed. Inappropriate dress can be disruptive or distracting to the educational

    process and the school administration reserves the right to make the final decision

    regarding appropriate dress in school. The regulations regarding student attire are as

    follows:

    Student attire should be school appropriate, neat, clean and reflecting anappearance of modesty, Clothing with inappropriate pictures, liquoradvertisements, sexually suggestive messages, profanity, tobacco, gangaffiliation slogans.

    Offensive or obscene symbols, signs or slogans, degrading any race, societal

    group color, creed, religion, gender, ancestry, national origin, social oreconomical status, sexual orientation or people with disabilities is not permitted.

    Buttons, pins and other accessories are permitted, as long as they comply withthe above mentioned regulations and do not cause disruption, disorder, or adanger.

    Bare midriff, crop tops which expose the abdominal area, halter-tops, spaghettistraps, tube tops, and tank tops with straps that are less than one inch wide arenot permitted.

    Clothing which is extremely tight or transparent is not permitted.

    Very short shorts, very short skirts and/or very short culottes are not permitted.

    Shorts should be worn only when it is temperature appropriate.

    No apparel which reveals undergarments or promotes immodesty is permitted.

    Sneakers with backs are always to be worn when in gym. Articles which can cause damage to other students and/or property, are not

    permitted.

    Radios, tapes or CD players are not allowed. No hats are to be worn in school. No pajama bottoms are permitted.

    Students who are in violation of the dress code will be sent to the office and given an

    opportunity to change into more appropriate dress. If a student does not have a

    change of clothing, he or she will be asked to call home to request a change of clothes

    to be brought to the building. The student will not be allowed to return to class until

    dressed appropriate

    General Rules

    Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited. This includes knives, cap guns,water pistols, etc. Police will be notified of any kind brought to school.

    Fighting is not permitted and will result in consequences.

    Courtesy and politeness are expected in your relationships with school staffmembers and classmates.

    Treat others, as you want others to treat you.

    Profane or vulgar language will not be accepted. Telephones, bicycles, toys, trading cards, radios, CD players, breath spray,

    aerosol cans, paint balls, spray cans, matches or lighters, beepers, cell phones,laser lights, etc. should not be brought to school. These items will beconfiscated and returned only to a parent / guardian.

    Selling of any items including candy, stickers, etc. is not permitted.

    Gum chewing or eating candy in the school or bus is not permitted.

    Snow, rocks, sticks, and other objects should not to be picked up, kicked, orthrown.

    Written or graphic material referring to or displaying violent nature is notpermitted and will be confiscated.

    Assembly Rules

    Assemblies and other special events are a privilege. Attendance at such programs may

    be denied to students for inappropriate behavior or to those who owe assignments at

    the discretion of the administration.

    Be respectful to staff, performers, speakers, and fellow students. Remain quiet and attentive. Remain seated.

    Use the restroom only if it is an emergency.

    Applaud and respond appropriately

    Self Defense

    Self defense is an action to prevent injury to oneself. When a defensive action causes

    excessive harm to the offender, or it is known to be the result of instigation by the

    claimant, such defensive action will be considered return aggression. RETURN

    AGGRESSION will incur the same consequence as mutually combative/assaultive

    behavior.

    Teasing and Harassment

    Students in Bordentown schools are expected to treat one another with respect

    regardless of gender, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation.

    Inappropriate touching, gender bias, racial comments and/or jokes, and name calling of

    any kind are not permitted on the way to and from school or on school property. All

    instances of such harassment must be reported to the classroom teacher and

    administration, as per stated in Board Policy 4105. Parents will be contacted and

    appropriate action will be taken. Interventions include, but are not limited to:

    contacting district and local authorities, supportive counseling, detentions, andsuspensions. Contact the Affirmative Action Officer at 298-0676, ext. 3143, or school

    administration for further information.

    Consequences

    Students who do not follow the rules will have consequences for their misbehavior.

    Punishments will vary according to the frequency and severity of the misbehavior.

    Consequences may include detentions at lunchtime, before or after school detention,

    loss of school activities, in-school suspension, and out-of-school suspension. Under no

    circumstance should students be placed outside of any classroom unsupervised. Please

    contact the main office if you need assistance ext. 4100.

    Parents will receive a Notice of Disciplinary Action, letter, or telephone call whenever a

    detention or more severe punishment is given. Disciplinary notices must be signed by

    a parent/guardian and returned to school the next day. Further disciplinary action may

    be taken, if a student fails to return the notices unsigned or late. Parents may appeal a

    suspension to the principal. This should occur immediately so a decision can be

    rendered before the suspension begins.

    INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ACCESS AGREEMENT

    I, _________________________________, as a substitute in the Bordentown Regional School

    District, am aware of the significant responsibilities associated with the use of informationtechnology and the Internet. By my signature below, I certify that I have read the followingpolicies, that I understand them and that I agree to be bound by them. Specifically, I agree to:

    1) Use district Informational Technology Resources for education purposes only.

    2) Treat with respect and exercise reasonable care in the use of all district computer

    Technology is a powerful tool that can enhance instruction. All classrooms are equipped

    with computers that have Internet access. The district has installed filtering software to

    block sites that are considered inappropriate. The filtering software currently used is

    Marshall 8e6. Although the software is highly effective each and every staff member

    maintains the responsibility to closely monitor student use of the Internet when that student

    is assigned to him/her. If a staff member suspects any misuse of technology by a student,

    the staff member will report that suspicion to the building principal or designee.

    Each staff member will:

    1. Receive an e-mail account that is assigned by the district. E-mail IS NOT

    PRIVATE and may be monitored by the school district.

    2. Be given a password to access the computer system. In accepting this

    password, the staff member agrees to keep if confidential and report any

    breaches of security to building principal or designee.

    3. Contact appropriate supervisors or school administrator if special provisions are

    needed such as the establishment of individual or group student e-mail accounts

    that would enhance instruction.

    4. Report and malfunction or hardware problem to the district Technology

    Department via the online reporting system.

    5. Note: the use of the computer, including the Internet/ E-mail connections isclosely monitored and IS NOT PRIVATE. Network storage space, called home

    directories, is provided for every staff member and is treated as lockers. The

    home directories are closely monitored and may be inspected at anytime if thereis reason to believe that there is a difficulty. This means the Network

    Administrator reviews files and communications contained in the home directoriesto maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system

    consistent with district policy. User should not expect that files stored on districtservers will always be private.

    6. If a staff member inadvertently accesses an inappropriate site, it must bereported immediately to the Director of Technology.

    Bullying: Guidelines for Teachers

    Some anti-bullying policies actually do more harm than good. Educators can use the followingtips to intervene appropriately when bullying occurs.

    THE DO's:

    Stop the bullying immediately.Stand between the bullied student and the bully(ies), blocking eye contact. Don't send anybystanders away. To avoid escalating the tension, wait until later to sort out the facts. Talk to theparties involved separately once they are calm.

    Refer to school rules regarding bullying.Speak in a matter-of-fact tone of voice to describe what you heard or saw. Let all students knowbullying is always unacceptable.

    Support the bullied child.Do this in a way that allows him or her dignity and to feel safe from retaliation. Make a point tosee the child later in private if he or she is upset. Increase supervision to assure bullying is notrepeated.
