    Editorial

The famous phrase blood, toil, tears and sweat was rst uttered in 1849 by Giuseppe Garibaldi whenrallying his revolutionary forces in Rome. Theodore Roosevelt also uttered the phrase in 1897, following his

appointment as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. However, this phrase became well known after Churchillsrst speech to the House after taking over as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the rst year of World

War II. Well probably hear often things like this in the coming months.

Why Iceland should be in the news, but is notSACSIS, Deena Stryker, August 15, 2011

As almost every european country is facing major

nancial risks, the small northern country, Iceland,

should become an example. The nancial crisis rou-ghly hit a country that presented a strong growth sincemany years. While the debt sky rocketed, the Kroner

lost 85% of its value with respect to the Euro. But thiscrisis resulted in Icelanders recovering their sovereignrights. This article (August 2011) explains why european citi-zens should look to Iceland, an example of how andwhy to refuse to bow to foreign interests might rein-

    force sovereignty.

How to make money when economy is failingThe Daily Beast, Rob Baedeker, November 21, 2011

With the crisis, the purchasing power of every citizen istumbling. And a fascinating point is that strangers arewilling to pay their neighbour to rent their belongings,in order to save a few pennies. The fact that anyonecan make money from stuff not used anymore is anincredible discovery. This article give details about thisincreasing trends: collaborative consumption.

Is coworking the new incubator ?Deskmag, Dave Bunnell & Jeannine van der Linden,

    November 14, 2011

Paraphrasing Wikipedia, co-working could be dened

as a style of work which involves independent pro-fessionals sharing a work environment; usually in acoworking space. Nowadays, it is not uncommon forco-workers to communicate and collaborate everydaywith others in coworking spaces, online, world widely. This article wonders if coworking is the new incubator.

The sustainability movement: ve trends on

this side of the AtlanticThe Guardian, Peter Madden, November 9, 2011

While hit by the debt crisis, the EU remains a major

market maker in environmental standards and regu-

lation. This article gives the few themes the author used in itslast San Franciscos presentation on the latest trendsfor business sustainability in Europe: a root and branchquestioning of capitalism, changing consumers throughbrands, how to integrate thinking on biodiversity intotheir sustainability strategies and the emphasis as onoverlaying digital intelligence on existing infrastructure.

    Study nds sustainable companies

    signicantly outperform nancially

    Business Ethics, Michael Connor,November 14, 2011

When companies embody a sustainable businessimage, CEOs are more likely to be aware of their im-pact in term of sustainability; whereas traditional rms

with compensation based on short-term metrics pushmanagers towards decisions that forget the long-termvalue creation. This article reveals the results of a study led by theHarvard Business School and the London BusinessSchool: companies with a high sustainable businessculture signicantly outperform their counterparts over

the long-term, both in terms of stock market and ac-

    counting performance.

Scientists prove telecommuting is awesomeGigaOM, Jessica Stillman, November 14, 2011

Researchers of Stanford set out a study in order tocompare telecommuters with ofce-based employees. This article gives the results of the study. And they areastonishing

ROWE: the grown-up version of workBrazen, Kelly Gurnett, November 3, 2011

Probably, the way we work is not the best one. Thatsthe premise behind the Results-Only Work Envi-ronment (ROWE) initiative. The authors of the studybelieve the modern workplace is cluttered with regu-lations, expectations and wrong practices that havenothing to do with the actual work were supposed tobe doing. This article details the benets of focusing on em-ployees results only: workers are more efcient,

disruptions disappear, employees get their lives back, adults are treated like adults, the wheat is cut from thechaff and employers win, too.

Presenteeism a growing trend in UK

businessesCMI, Tim Chambers, November 17, 2011

Uncertainty surrounding job security is leading to wor-kers spending more time in the ofce to appear va-luable to their managers. According to a study, 41%of workers feel pressure visible in the ofce. More

than 25% think the interpretation of their performance

is based on how much time they spend in the ofcerather than their outputs. This short article explains theimportance to encourage exible working.

10 components of collaborative intelligenceCMS Wire, David Coleman, November 21, 2011

We all know about Intelligence Quotient and Emotio-nal Intelligence, but very few deals with CollaborativeIntelligence. The thing that makes someone a ne col-laborator is frequently their frame of mind, coupled withprecise knowledge and tools. Realize that tools areenablers, they cant make group work together, theycan just facilitate the relations.

    November 21, 2011

A conventional wisdom would assert that the explana-tion of the smaller gap between you and me are sum-med up in social media: Facebook friends are bound

Howcould we improve it?Despite lot of hours spent in school, almost each stu-dent remains with a poor level in specic lessons, par-ticularly science and languages.Rather than starting the course with motion in astraight line at constant speed, the author of the ar-ticle estimates that we could explain physics concepts
