China is Canada’s 2nd biggest trading partner in the world. Their two-way trade amounted to more

than 70 billion CA$ in 2013, accounts for 9% of Canada’s top 10 trading partners.

There is more than 50 billion CA$ imports and 20

billion exports with China. Obviously, Canada is a country

with big deficit in China-Canada trade.

Canada-China Trades Has a Long History

History

From the beginning of 20th cent, China had already been Canada’s most important trading partner in far east. Canada established trading offices at Shanghai, Dalian and Tianjin in 1908 and 1931. Two-way trade of Canada and China

amounted 8.3 million CA$ with

Canada’s 0.8 million surplus in 1936.There are small amount of trades after 1949. The big increment happened after “Canada-China Wheat Agreement” in

1961. The trades exceed 100 million in

1961, and more than 200 million in 1966.Canada establish diplomatic relations with China in 1970, and it was one of the earliest west countries to do so. Canada-China trades began to have a political protection afterwards. In 1970s, the trades

increased to more than 0.5 billion CA$,

1.3 billion in 1980s and 8.1 billion in 1995.

Among Canada’s top 4 imports partners, the biggest growth is China. The amount is 4 times in 2012 than in 2001, and the trend goes on.
