CALL FOR DATACALL FOR PAPERS

There is increasing debate among public health offi-cials about exposure to gasoline. A 2 1/2-day workshopis planned for 12 to 14 December 1990 in Annapolis,Maryland, to facilitate discussion among scientists, man-agers, and policymakers in the public and private sectorsabout general population exposures to gasoline or con-stituents thereof (excluding combustion products orsmog). The workshop will highlight new data on gaso-line exposures and examine new strategies for analyzingexposure. The product will be a compilation of peer-reviewed papers and an executive summary to informregulatory decision-makers as they consider possible re-duction strategies for gasoline exposures. We are seekingsubmissions ofdata (for incorporation into a backgroundpaper currently in preparation) or presentations of dataon nonoccupational gasoline exposures. Please empha-size the database avairable.

Deadline for submission of abstracts (200 to 300words) and/or data is 1 October 1990.

Registration is open; fee is $150. To submit abstractsand/or data and to obtain further information about theworkshop, contact: Dr. Karen L. Hulebak, EnvironInternational Corporation, 4350 North FairfaxDrive, Arlington, VA 22203. Telephone: 703-516-2300. FAX: 703-516-2345.

Research AssociatesFoot-and-Mouth Disease

Plum Island Animal Disease CenterThe Center is expanding its research programs on FMD virus to include fundamental studies on thestructural basis of immunogenicity and virus-cell interactions. These studies will be conducted by anew multidisciplinary group in conjunction with Dr. Fred Brown FRS, Yale University School of Medi-cine. The group, which has strong base funding, will be located in well-equipped laboratories in theCenter's high security animal biocontainment facilities.

Postdoctoral Research Associate positions are available in protein crystallography, molecular virology, and immunology and offer a unique and highly productive opportunity.Four positions are open in the following areas:

1. Analysis by X-ray crystallography of the structure of the virus and its reaction with antibodiesand cell receptors. The Center has its own X-ray crystallography facility. Dr. J. Hogle, ScrippsClinic and Research Foundation, is collaborating in these studies.2. Analysis of the structural basis of antigenic specificity of immunogenic peptides by nuclearmagnetic resonance and circular dichroism. This work will be a collaboration with ProfessorW.A. Gibbons and Dr. P. Mascagni, University of London, England.3. Study of the molecular basis of the interaction between the virus and cell receptors.4. Study of the immune response to synthetic peptides and recombinant vaccines.

The Center is situated off the northeast tip of Long Island, New York. USDA ferry services to OrientPoint, NY and Old Saybrook, CT offer a choice of living on Long Island or in Connecticut. Close collabo-rations are being developed with research institutions in the area, including: Yale and Tufts Universities, the University of Connecticut and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Appointments are for two or three years from December 1, 1990 (or by arrangement), and, based on quali-fications, will be at the GS-11 (approximately $30K/year) or GS-12 level (approximately $36K/year).Successful candidates must have obtained a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline within thelast 3 years. Individuals with experience in picornaviruses or protein crystallography are particularly en-couraged to apply. Applicants should send a curriculum vitae marked ON053 along with the names andaddresses of three references to:
