"I believe a concert is successful if after it people feel a strong desire to call their

parents and friends, to spend more time with their families, to give a smile to somebody...

If the world becomes a little better it means I have conducted well".

Konstantin Chudovsky –Principal Conductor of the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra (Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Chile)– is a young multiple award-winning Russian opera, ballet and symphony conductor. Speaking seven languages (Russian, English, German, Italian, Spanish, French and Chinese) has enabled him to master a wide operatic repertoire, and his extraordinary musical memory allows him to conduct music by heart, without consulting a full score.

Konstantin began his studies at the Gnesin State Musical College –under Professor Valentina Bogdanovskaya– and continued at the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, from which he graduated with honors. Among his teachers were the eminent Russian maestros Boris Kulikov and Vladimir Ponkin. He graduated from Moscow Conservatory in the class of legendary Russian Conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky. In 2002, while still a student, Konstantin became a prize-winner of the All-Russia Contest of Pianists. In 2010 he won the National Youth Award «Triumph» in the Art and Literature category. From 2004 to 2014 Konstantin was a leading conductor of the Moscow State Musical Theatre Helikon Opera.

Moscow Conservatory Orchestra, Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of Pavel Slobodkin Musical Centre, Osipov State Russian Folk Orchestra, Nekrasov Russian Folk Orchestra and the Natalia Satz Musical Theatre Orchestra.

Konstantin Chudovsky has a wide lyric, ballet and symphonic repertoire, including works by Beethoven, Bizet, Borodin, Haydn, Janacek, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Mussorgsky, Poulenc, Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rouse, Sibelius, Shostakovich, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Theodorakis, Verdi, among others. Among his recent and future projects are Boris Godunov (Moscow, Santiago, Sofia), Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Del Castell de Perelada, Limassol, Nicosia, Santiago), La Cambiale di Matrimonio (Wien), Love for the Three Oranges (Riga), Carmen (Bonn), Il Trovatore (Limoges, Reims, Santiago), Khovanshchina (Stockholm), Das Liebesverbot, Mozart’s Requiem, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Massy), Mozart and Salieri, Vec Makropulos, Siberia (Moscow), Rusalka (Lyon), ballet Cinderella (Lyon), Eugene Onegin (Luxemburg), Kat’a Kabanova, The Swan Lake, Peer Gynt, Zorba, the Greek (Santiago) and symphonic concerts in different cities including works by Mussorgsky, Orff, Tchaikovsky, Haydn, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Khachaturian and Rimsky-Korsakov.

In 2011 Konstantin was awarded with an Honorary Diploma of the Critics Circle of Chile for the performance Modest Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, which was recognized as one of the best events of that year in Chile. In 2011 the Financial Times Magazine mentioned Konstantin Chudovsky among the 25 Russians to watch. In 2014 Konstantin conducted Boris Godunov in Sofia, a performance which was awarded the highest prize of Bulgaria, «The Crystal Lyra».

"Special mention deserves conductor Chudovsky. With remarkable communication, he achieved splendid results and everything augurs an upward career".— EL MERCURIO, MARZO 2012

Dances of Galanta (Kodály), Flute Concerto (Rouse), El sombrero de tres picos(De Falla) • Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra.

"Again this hyperkinetic Russian master hit the Teatro Municipal, this time performing composers of his same origin: Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov".— LAS ÚLTIMAS NOTICIAS, MARZO 2012

Dawn on the Moscow River (Mussorgsky), Violin Concerto, (Tchaikovsky), Scheherazade(Rimsky-Korsakov) • Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra.

"One feature that was immediately noticed in this season opining was the beautiful sound generated by the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble’s rise is becoming increasingly perceptible and its association with Chudovsky becomes attractive looking towards the future".— BEETHOVENFM.CL, MARCH 2013

Carmina Burana (Orff )• Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra & Teatro Municipal Choir.

"The Teatro Municipal named this concert “Gathering of Giants”. The title is not an unjustified one because of Brahms’ concert summit position; because of the work that followed it, the Symphony No. 6, op. 54 by Shostakovich; and because of Konstantin Chudovsky’s both artistic and physical height; he moved at ease while conducting this piece of his compatriot, without the podium and by heart".— EL MERCURIO, JULY 2013

Piano Concierto n.° 1 (Brahms), Symphony n.° 6 (Shostakovich) • Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra.

"In Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, Alexander Volodin’s performance in the keyboard was very well conjugated with that of Chudovsky’s; they offered a version that had different touches of speed and vigor, with temporary disconnections, but definitely triumphant (...) Chudovsky once again set fire to a mark of excellence already stamped firmly, which this time he diversified through a path of breathtaking anguish and a virtuosic and almost circus like entertainment".— LAS ÚLTIMAS NOTICIAS, JULY 2013

Piano Concierto n.° 1 (Brahms), Symphony n.° 6 (Shostakovich) • Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra.

"Chudovsky, conducting the entire program by heart, demonstrated his sovereign dominion of the pieces".— EL MERCURIO, ABRIL 2014

Andante para cuerdas (Leng), Simphony n.° 6 (Beethoven), Spring & The Bells (Rachmaninoff).

"The Philharmonic was in charge of the Seventh, under the conduction of Konstantin Chudovsky. He imposed a personal interpretation to a version which had more solemnity than nerve at the beginning, a melodic flight in the slow movement and more speed than vigor at the end. It was a good but different Seventh".— LAS ÚLTIMAS NOTICIAS, MAYO 2014

Geografía del desastre (Errázuriz), Piano Concerto n.° 2 (Rachmaninoff), Symphony n.° 7 (Beethoven).

OPERA REVIEWS

"This beautiful work also had a high musical achievement. Young director Konstantin Chudovsky, capable of leading a work like this without score, attended every vocal and instrumental detail, was subtle even in the most exuberant sound expression, distinguished musical frames and kept an absolute correlation with the regie. Just outstanding".— EL MERCURIO, JULY 2011

Boris Godunov • Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra & Teatro Municipal Choir

“He made a careful interpretation of a work to which he is completely connected. He conducted with no score and even the tiniest detail was under control, from the pit to the choir. A precise, methodical and accurate conduction. Everything worked like clockwork. And this, with no lack of passion; on the contrary, he managed to pass on opposed emotions and also that dull and underground roar that lives in Verdi’s operas and that is often covered by the dominant melody. Furthermore, he succeeded in making the Philharmonic Orchestra, at times, to reach the elusive Verdian color, especially by emphasizing the rough and sorrowing character of the bass strings”.— La Tercera, Septembre 2013

Il Trovatore • Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra & Teatro Municipal Choir

“The rough and aggressive sound of the orchestra could be due to the need to set the tragedy such as Janacek had expected; the concept of maestro Chudovsky, very proper”.— LA SEGUNDA, MAY 2014

Katia Kabanova • Sant iago Philharmonic Orchestra & Teatro Municipal Choir

“Konstantin Chudovsky’s athletic conducting got the most from every player and singer, and he had the Wiener KammerOrchester savouring the crescendos and taking care of nuances”.— BACHTRACK, OCTOBER 2012

La Cambiale di Matrimonio • Wiener Kammeroper

"To this was added, this time, an additional wit: the complicity of conductor Konstantin Chudovsky who, from the pit, not only had the baton, but he also played the harpsichord and, to accompany the Count in Se il mio nome, the guitar; he also made funny gestures to the stage that ended up making laugh Bruno Praticó, one of the protagonists. Beyond that, Chudovsky has an interesting vision of Rossini’s work, one of great vitality, volume and distinct nuances for the lyricism and delightful coloristic effects".— LA TERCERA, JUNE 2013

BALLET REVIEWS

“If one had to point out the best of this production, beyond the high performance showed by the Santiago Ballet, the very first place would certainly be for maestro Chudovsky and the Philharmonic, with a musical service whose quality made history for its sound and strength".— LAS ÚLTIMAS NOTICIAS, JUNE 2013

The Swan Lake • Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra & Santiago Ballet

"The production of The Swan Lake presented at the 2013 Season of the Teatro Municipal de Santiago will make history as a special event where dance and music were ideally compound (…) The conductor brought out all the details and emphasized with great vigor the climactic moments, thus achieving a fully symphonic development. Bright were the most intimate and chamber-like passages and the solo performance of the musicians of the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra".— BEETHOVEN FM, JUNE 2013

The Swan Lake • Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra & Santiago Ballet

"Bright and nuanced was the conduction of Konstantin Chudovsky leading the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra, to interpret the magnificent and beautiful score by Edvard Grieg arranged by John Lanchbery". — EL MERCURIO, APRIL 2014

STYLE & MUSIC

He could memorize the music of Boris Godunov –more than 500 pages; the prologue and the four acts; the roles of the 12 soloists and the complex orchestration–, then conduct it with no score, no podium and no baton, and succeed –with ovations from the public and the acclaim of the critics. He has repeated this “omissions” in concerts, ballet and other operas and for that he has been called “the Russian miracle” and one of the “movers and shakers” of his country (The Financial Times).

It is an unconventional style for an unconventional musician. He did not start his musical education when he was a child but at 16, and he claims that is one of the reasons why he is so passionate about music. Then, when he finally started his artistic instruction, his main reason to enroll the Gnessin State Musical College of Moscow was no that he hoped to find his vocation but to avoid military service. He even recognizes that he specialized in direction because he was not good enough as a pianist.

Nevertheless, once he got into the music world, his passion for it grew along with his talents. In 2010, when his career was just rising, the legendary Russian conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky –who was his professor–, said that he had “a stupendous musical talent and an aptitude to engage with the orchestra”. Today, those skills for conduction are still out of question and his style, more than just an oddity one can notice, is his way to identify himself with the music.

He does not use a podium simply because he is almost two meters tall. He believes hands –both of them; that is why he does not use baton– not only can communicate the period, composer, piece and passage of what he is conducting, but also “your understanding of the piece, your emotion and to ignite them”. And he bets on learning the music by heart in order to deeply blend with each note and to acknowledge every part even better than its performers –musicians, singers, dancers–, so he can share his lecture in an honest way to, finally, achieve a complete connection with them. That is why he does not use a score during his presentations.

“For me, conducting without a score is like driving a big, expensive top quality Ferrari. People have built it and gave you a privilege to drive it. This is a great responsibility and tremendously exciting: You ride at high speed on the brink of the abyss, anything can happen at any moment, and you will either crash or win the race. I can’t imagine anything better than this”, he declared recently to The Jerusalem Post.
