Comment about the setting (examples: the setting makes story exciting, the setting has an important effect on main character, the setting is/is not exciting or new, the setting increased my knowledge of something): The setting is something we aren’t used to, even if there are other science-fiction’s books where the settings are futuristic. It’s most a situation or a setting that is probable, like if it could happen in a few years, or if we imagined the future of human race… I really loved reading this book, because its atmosphere makes the story exciting. In this society divided into factions (Abnegation (the selfless), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful) and Erudite (the intelligent), all are forced to choose where they belong at the age of sixteen. Each faction has a precised duty, like the Abnegation that rule, or the Dauntless that is the “Army” and should protect the city. The teenagers have to choose the faction they prefer during the “Choosing Ceremony”. Once they went into their faction’s headquarter, they all have to do the initiation tests and since they’ve chosen their faction, they won’t have the right to see their family again : “Faction before blood”. All along the story, futuristic machines and a big scientific advance are omnipresent.

  • MAIN CHARACTER

Beatrice Prior is the main character of Divergent. Shes a girl who discovers all along the story, the good and the bad there is in her society. She is born in a family of Abnegation, and has a brother, Caleb. This teenager is (had to be, because of her faction) generous, charitable and altruistic. Of course, she and her brother are both sixteen, and have to choose their faction. Beatrice shocked everyone when she chose Dauntless. Nobody thought she would choose the faction where the initiation tests are the harder. Once she was a Dauntless, she became Tris. She hid a big secret that she cant ever say to anyone, otherwise her life could be unsafe: Beatrice was a Divergent. The Divergent are the persons who dont belong to any faction. Later in the story, when there will be tensions between factions, when one of them will want to rule the country and also destroy one faction by using a simulation serum, the Divergents will be able to deflect this serum, and be free of any control. This is the reason why they are considered as a threat. The main character changes from the start of the story, when she was only an Abnegation, when she felt she wasnt at her place, to the end, as a Dauntless. Everyone that she cared about has either died, or left her. Tris lost her parents, and has been through the beginning of a war. She grew and learned lots of thing.

OTHER CHARACTERS Another character: Natalie Prior Details: She is Beatrices mom. Natalie is really thoughtful, calm and discreet. She wants the best for her children and is always here to listen to their problems. Another character: Caleb Prior Details: Hes Beatrices brother. Clabe doesnt come to light that much but hes still close to his family. He becomes a more important character in the second Divergents book. Another character: Four (Tobias) Details: Hes one of the Dauntless leaders and is eighteen (in the book). Her father is the head of the government. Four is quiet, affective and indulgent but he is still strict and rigorous. Another character: Jeannine Matthews Details: She works for the government and occupies a high function. We discover she is corrupt and hides something that will lead to a new civil war. Jeannine authoritarian.

  • THEME

What is the author trying to say in this story? Divergent is not a book with a hidden message that will change our vision of the life

but the author is maybe trying to warn us about the quick and limitless evolution of technology. How it is omnipresent in our daily life and how it could be an enemy.

There is a message about the government, how it can control us and how it could be corrupt.

What is his lesson in life? Is there a moral to this story?

Maybe be aware of what is happening in politic and never fall in an absolute dictatorship.

This is a story about what ?

Its about courage, doing the right thing, make the best choices for ourselves, working hard and next to all these things, a bit about of love.

    PLOT : THE ACTION

Summary of what happens in the story : - Beatrice is sixteen and has to choose her new faction and also leave her

family. - She goes to the Dauntless HQ and has to do a lot of tests to be one of them

    - She escapes with Four and they together have to survive and to counter all the governments attacks.

    EVALUATION OF THE BOOK

What did you think of the book? It is a great book, quite easy to read even if it has almost 500 pages. I was totally in

another world while reading. Its one of my favorite books.

What did you like about the book? I liked the idea of a divided society with different factions and relationships between

    many characters.

What didnt you like about the book? There isnt something I dont like about this book.

Was the story confusing or hard to believe?

    Not at all.

  • Was the story predictable (could you guess what was going to happen?)

It depends on the different situations, but for many moments, I was surprised of what happened.

    Was the story believable?

Yes, of course. It could be our world in many years.

The ending was a little bit sad and grasping.
