Film lines
‘Paera kaetavudane chumma athuruthilae.’
Translation of that line in Tamil from ‘Sivaji’ movie is
that the mere mention of name causes tremors.
Taking that as a value statement, P. C.
Balasubramanian and Raja Krishnamoorthy
elaborate in ‘Rajini’s Punchtantra: Business and life
management the Rajinikanth way’
(www.rupapublications.com) that in the corporate
world, reputation is the result of innovation (e.g.
Google), integrity and trust (e.g. the Tata group),
creativity (e.g. Disney), and product innovation (e.g.
Apple). “It calls for unparalleled mastery in the
chosen area or unblemished reputation and standing
through decades of existence.”
In the authors’ view, the value statement underscores the importance of
creating brands, safeguarding brand equity, building and sustaining one’s
reputation. A brand communicates trust and acceptance and, in most
cases, it takes years to create one, the authors note. “A lot of care must be
taken to ensure that the mere mention of the brand name would make the
desired impact in the market.”
Another ‘value statement’ in the book packed with entertainment is from
‘Basha,’ thus: ‘Naan oru thadavai sonna, nooru thadava sonna maadhiri’…

China driving
Is it possible to both make money and protect
intellectual property right in China? This is one of
the questions that G. E. Anderson raises in
‘Designated Drivers: How China plans to dominate
the global auto industry’ (www.wiley.com). If demand
for cars in China continues to grow faster than that
of other markets, perhaps the absolute number of
vehicles sold under foreign brands will continue to
increase for the short- to medium-term, but foreign
automakers should understand that the ultimate
goal is that Chinese brands dominate the Chinese
market, he reminds. “In China, foreign automakers
compete, not only against other automakers, but
also against the Chinese government, and the Chinese government’s goal is
simple: the Chinese automakers will ultimately win.” The book traces how
the early joint ventures in the late 1980s only required foreign partners to
contribute unspecified ‘technology,’ and how, over the following decades…
