When someone is deceased it is Jewish custom whenever writing their name to
letters of the two words “zichrono livracha” (or in the case of a deceased woman “zichrona livracha”). These two words mean “May his/her memory be for a blessing.” I want you to consider the deep and abiding truth in this small abbreviation. It does not say “May they be for a blessing,” rather “May their memory be for a blessing.” Indeed, it is our memories which create the reality of blessings. Memories which remind us of their acts of loving kindness, memories which urge us to live by the values which nurtured them, memories which make our children aware of their roots. Zecher Tzadik Livracha - “The memory of the righteous is an abiding blessing.”
May this High Holy Day season bring you only the best memories and only the highest blessings, Shana Tova Tikateivu V’tichateimu.

A FITTING MEMORIALTO THE DEPARTED
In our Temple there is a beautiful Memorial Board upon which may be inscribed the names of dear departed. Each name is inscribed on anindividual plaque bearing the date of death.
Upon the weekend of the Yahrzeit the names of those remembered at this time are lit. The names are also recalled by the Rabbi during the service.
In our faith we are asked to honor our loved ones in life and in death. This is a fitting tribute to those of our loved ones who are no longer with us.

EXPRESSIONS OF COMFORT
When someone is deceased it is Jewish custom whenever writing their name to
letters of the two words “zichrono livracha” (or in the case of a deceased woman “zichrona
livracha”). These two words mean “May his/her memory be for a blessing.” I want you
to consider the deep and abiding truth in this small abbreviation. It does not say “May they
be for a blessing,” rather “May their memory be for a blessing.” Indeed, it is our memories
which create the reality of blessings. Memories which remind us of their acts of loving
kindness, memories which urge us to live by the values which nurtured them, memories
which make our children aware of their roots. Zecher Tzadik Livracha - “The memory of
the righteous is an abiding blessing.”
May this High Holy Day season bring you only the best memories and only the
highest blessings, Shana Tova Tikateivu V’tichateimu.
