This fall Library Assistant Gaye D’Agata attended the California Library Associa-tion Conference in Pasadena.

Gaye attended a half day fundraising institute listen-ing to library trustees and friends talk about how they raise money for their librar-ies.

Topics for additional work-shops she attended included librarians partnering with other community organiza-tions, consumer health web-sites, automating a newspa-per library, intellectual free-

dom, and cataloging.

It wasn’t all serious as Gaye listened to Paula Poundstone amusingly praise libraries during the opening session. At an eve-ning Gaming Social spon-sored by the Young Adult librarians she played the Wii system for the first time. Gaye reported, “Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution beat me down, but I rocked at golf and tennis!”

The last day of the confer-ence, Gaye went to a work-shop entitled, "Reaching Out

in All Directions: Unconven-tional Outreach for Aca-demic Libraries." The pre-senter, who was from the University of San Diego, spoke about encouraging students to play an active part in planning their library services and space.

During the closing session, "Leadership at Every Level," California movers and shak-ers were recognized. All of them agreed that the defini-tion of a leader is, "someone who motivates others to ef-fect change by empowering other people."
