Director’s NotesIn our hectic world, filled with rushed and often abbreviated communication through email, texting and other high-tech methodologies, it is sometimes comforting to remember a simpler time, a time when interpersonal communication was slower, more reflective and thoughtful. She Loves Me ha r k e n s ba c k t o t ha t e r a w he n p e n pals were a popular way to get to know someone, a precursor to today’s dating apps. Instead of flipping through photos and brief descriptions on a cell phone, one w ou ld an sw e r an ad i n a “ L on e l y H e a r t s” c ol u m n a n d be g i n t o c or r e sp on d w i t h a member of the opposite sex based only on the description of the person, frequently without a photo. Letters were composed with the utmost of care – choosing the p erf ec t w or ds a n d t on e t o c on v e y p e r son a l i t y a n d, of c ou r se , t o i m p r e ss. S om e t hi n g lost in our current world, in which speed is valued above all else, is thoughtful prose; writing for the sole purpose of conveying thoughts, feelings, and personality. She Loves Me r em i nds u s of t hi s l ost a r t a n d i t s i m p or t a n c e .

Central to the story is a letter – actually, many, many letters – written between ac ri m oni ou s c o- w ork e r s A m a li a a n d G e or g w ho, u n be kn ow n st t o e a c h ot he r , a r e eac h ot her’ s p e n p a ls. T hi s c ha r m i n g st or y of di sc ov e r y a n d r om a n c e w a s r e p l i c a t e d i n t he 1 9 4 0 m ov i e , The Shop Around the Corner , t he 1 9 4 9 m ov i e m u si c a l , In the Good Old Summertime , and u p da t e d t o t he i n t e r n e t e r a i n You’ve Got Mail . A l t hou g h t he settings for these silver screen iterations are somewhat different, the basic story re -mains the same – a voyage of discovery two people take through the written word, sharing their thoughts and feelings and, ultimately falling in love.In every story, the most compelling dynamics are the relationships between the characters and how they develop. This story is no different. I see it onstage as we rehearse – each actor bringing his or her character to life. I also see it offstage as we, the JFed Players, grow in our relationships with each other, making us a big family as w ell as a c om m u ni t y t he a t r e e n se m bl e w or ki n g t og e t he r t o br i n g t hi s show t o l i f e .

P le a se si t ba c k a nd en j oy She Loves Me as it transports you to a simpler time.

She Loves Me fun facts:• Miklós László, author of the play, Parfumerie, upon which She Loves Me is based,

was born Nicholaus Leitner (László) in Budapest, Hungary in 1903, to a family of German Jewish extraction.

• The name “László” was chosen for the Leitner family, for no particular reason other than that it was a well-known Hungarian name and that it was vaguely similar to the original family name “Leitner”.

• While still in Hungary, László rubbed elbows with the Hungarian literati of the day, including Ferenc Molnar, the playwright whose most famous work became Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical Carousel.

• As a young adult László began to produce his own one-scene plays for the various small theatres and cabarets around the city, which became his fame and provided small income. It even afforded him the time to work on some larger more comprehensive works which he would eventually complete as full multi-act plays.

• His first three-act play, A Legboldogabb Ember, The Happiest Man, won him the prestigious Hungarian Royal Academy Award for Literature in 1934, the Hungarian equivalent of the American Pulitzer Prize – quite an achievement for a man barely into his 30s.

• In 1938, Nicholaus László embarked for the USA. World War II was approaching, and Hungarians of Jewish extraction knew that the smart move was to head to America. He quickly established himself in the local Hungarian community on the lower east side of New York City. He now called himself Miklós László, a purely Hungarian name giving him full acceptance and cachet within the community.

• On December 28, 1944 he became a fully naturalized American citizen and officially adopted the name, Miklós László.

• Most famous of all his plays, which was produced as a motion picture during this time, was Illatszertár, known in English as Parfumerie. It premiered at the Pest Theatre in Budapest in 1937, and shortly after László came to New York, the play was adapted as a movie script by Samson Raphaelson, titled The Shop Around the Corner (1940), starring James Stewart. A few years later it was re-filmed as In the Good Old Summertime (1949), a semi-musical showcase for Judy Garland, and, again, as You’ve Got Mail (1998).

• On April 23, 1963, the play debuted on Broadway as a full musical, entitled She Loves Me, with book by Joe Masteroff, music and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock (Fiddler on the Roof). It was nominated for 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, with Jack Cassidy winning for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (as Kodaly).

• She Loves Me was revived in 1993 and ran for 354 performances. It was nominated for 9 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, as well as in all four acting categories, with Boyd Gains winning for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical in the role of Georg Nowack.

• It was revived again in 2016 for a limited run at Studio 54 from February to July and was nominated for 8 Tony Awards.

Raise your Voice in SongThe Kol HaEmek (Voice of the Valley) Jewish Community Chorale operates independently under the auspices of the Jewish Federation of the Greater

San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys and celebrates Jewish music of all types and styles: liturgical and secular, traditional and contemporary. We are comprised of singers from all across our community, including unaffiliated and synagogue affiliated. We are the only Jewish community choir in Southern California. Each year we present at least two concerts. In addition, we regularly sing at Shabbat services through-out our community, at Cantors’ concerts and other performances of Jewish music throughout the SGPV and SoCal.

Unique Experience forYoung Musicians

The Jewish Youth Orchestra is a community-based ensemble of musicians ages 8-15 dedicated to the study and performance of Jewish music, liturgical and secular, as well as music influenced and connected to Jewish culture. The orchestra is under the lead-ership of Los Angeles area musician and music educator Janice

Mautner Markham. Our mission is to offer a unique experience to young musi-cians, including classical music training along with a Jewish cultural education which draws from numerous time periods and locations throughout the world.
