Is Spain in need of the gospel? Consider these facts: • Spain has only had religious freedom since the death of General Franco

(the last of the admonished dictators) in the mid-seventies. The end of the Franco government brought an end to all moralistic restraints, resulting in a total moral freedom for its citizens to do whatever they wanted. The spiritual vacuum is being filled by: secularism and materialism; foreign cults; the occult; drugs and gambling. Spain is a country that desperately needs the Lord.

• Spain has over 46,000,000 people and is one of the 55 least evangelized countries in the world.

• Spain was basically a third world country until after the death of Franco, and there has been an economic and intellectual resurgence since that time.

• Evangelical Christians are estimated at less than 1% of the total

population, making Spain the lowest percentage of Christians of all Spanish-speaking nations.

• Over 13 million live in towns, villages and districts where there is no

evangelical church.

• There are more Jehovah’s Witnesses than Evangelicals, and Muslim numbers have increased dramatically.

• The one million university students are largely unevangelized. Spain

leads Europe in drug problems, abortion and AIDS as a percentage of the total population.

• Nudity on TV is the norm in all time periods.

• Spain is the European country with the lowest number of marriages.

Many Spaniards do not marry, thus resulting in the lowest birthrate per couple in Europe. Distrust, hopelessness and insecurity are significant.

L’Arcada - where the adventure begins L’Arcada means “The Archway” symbolizing entry into something new and exciting.

Location L’Arcada is a camp and retreat ministry in the northeast corner of Spain located on 763 acres of land in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. Within a two hour driving radius, there are six million people.

Mission The mission of L’Arcada is to establish an atmosphere where non-believers can hear a clear presentation of the Gospel and make a life-changing decision accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. It is also a place where believers can be discipled and trained in their walk with the Lord in daily life at home, in the church and in the world.

Goals and Objectives • To evangelize Spain • To disciple Spaniards • To train Spanish Christian leadership • Church leaders • Youth leaders • Family leaders

Ministry Methods Through a series of wild adventures, and a loving staff, young people come to know and appreciate God’s creation. They open their lives to the Lord Creator. We give them what they want . . . English, Indians, Basketball, Adventure, Family camps . . . and we give it to them with high quality. Through a satisfying experience with loving, godly staff, young people and adults find themselves opening up to the claims of Christ.

L’Arcada is a great ministry base because the Spanish people love camping and the outdoors. L’Arcada provides an atmosphere of love, fun, caring, and excitement in a safe environment that is different from the secular camps that are available. Over 60 percent of the campers come from a secular environment, yet they return again and again because of what they experience here. Children and adults are much more open to hearing about and discussing spiritual things in the camp setting.

History The vision of L’Arcada started when David and Debbie Frank were working in church planting in the province of Girona, Spain. The Lord blessed and they saw people come to know the Lord, but noticed that much of the deep impact made in the lives of the Spaniards happened when they took people outside the cities for retreats and camps. Knowing that it would take many years for church planting teams to reach those in the thousands of cities in Spain, the vision started to form in their hearts of drawing thousands into a camp and conference center setting in order to reach them for the glory of the Lord. In 1983 an idea to establish a year round camp and conference center in the province of Girona started to form. There were years of property search and many faith building challenges, but also miracles of the Lord. In 1991, the first campers came to a very rustic L’Arcada.

The Future Currently L’Arcada can impact only 700 people with their present summer program and facilities. Expanding the current facilities will allow L’Arcada to minister to over 10,000 campers each year. That impact would greatly benefit families all over Spain. God is changing the lives of children and youth that come to L’Arcada each summer. Some who return to their homes as new believers share their new faith with their parents. Our goal is to encourage the establishment of new churches as more and more come to Christ.

7

Our future plans and goals are as follows:

• Expand the camping facilities to a complete year-round camping ministry for Spain.

• Increase the number of attendees to 10,000 each year.

• Maintain and increase the number of decisions for Christ, both salvation

and lordship.

• With new Christians, encourage the planting of new churches throughout Spain. L’Arcada supports the local church by reaching the youth of

today to build the church of tomorrow in Spain. L’Arcada’s theme:

Building into lives, making a difference.

What we are doing in Spain through Christian camping is: “Reaching and Training the Youth of Today…

Building the Church of Tomorrow”

Target Group:

We target in our different programs: Children from 7 – 12; adolescents from 12 – 15; youth from 16 – 18; singles from 18 – 25; and young families into their late 30’s. pastors, fianced couples. Our strong point is in evangelism and discipleship. In our outreach camps we have between 40 – 70% non-believers coming. This is significant in a country like Spain where 99.3% of the people have no relationship with Jesus Christ. We are creative and forward thinking in our way of reaching the youth of today and tomorrow.

Ministry History

• David and Debbie arrived in Spain in 1978 • Their initial responsibility was leading the Greater Europe Mission church

planting team in northeastern Spain. • They started by doing what most others were doing in evangelism… door-to-

door work. They saw some results, but longed for the Lord to do more. • Before leaving the States for Spain they had been involved in Christian

camping in California, Michigan, Maryland, and several other states and so God turned their minds and hearts to camping again to see if He would use this in their future ministry in Spain.

• They started to take teens out into the Pyrenees Mountains on backpacking trips and renting places to hold couples retreats and other events and saw God reach into lives.

• In 1983 God gave them the vision of starting a year round ministry in camping and conference work there in the Province of Girona. While they continued the work with the church planting team and having permission from Greater Europe Mission they started to organize the ministry better and looked for a property.

• In March of 1988, after 5 years of searching and much challenge they found a piece of land there in the Pyrenees near a town named Banyoles. In the next two years the Lord brought in the funds to pay off the property, set up a

basic camp, buy material and equipment and in 1991 we started with 24 campers.

• Now this last year we served over 700 in our various programs. God is

good. We are seeing many come to know our Lord as He works in their lives and hearts.

• Over these years we have seen many miracles from His hand as He has created this, His ministry, for His glory.

• Many of the youth who have gone through the camps and training programs are now leaders in their churches. God is amazing!

• New evangelistic programs and mentoring/leadership programs are in the works.

• We are in a 2nd phase of development here to take us into year round ministry here at the property instead of renting other facilities during winter at high prices. This will give us much more potential for working with the churches and church planting groups to see numeric and quality growth in these efforts.

Current plans/New initiatives

• We have a master plan. • Fund raising campaign for the 2nd Phase • We are now developing the second phase of the project. • New English Camps. • Two new national couple and one US Couple in process of coming on

board full time. • Recruiting Key Staff for the future

After many years of experience in this field, we are now trying to build a national staff for running L’Arcada. Our experience of working with different missionaries in this ministry is that with national or native-born missionaries, there are no language difficulties

and no is time required for cultural adjustment; therefore the family doesn’t suffer the problems of integration into the community. Many have chosen L’Arcada and other such ministries, and their dedication to God’s work has been, and always will be, welcome and productive. After a time however, some have experienced the abovementioned problems. National missionaries, on the other hand, are able to begin their ministry immediately with no adjustment required. For this reason, every dollar invested in them is efficiently applied to the ministry.

• Last September we get a new director, Pere Gonzalez. Pere and his wife

Celia with their 5 children have been on L’Arcada staff since 1997. He has been doing mostly administration work and Celia works with purchases.

PERSONAL TESTIMONY PEDRO I grew up in Sevilla in a catholic family and in the school I learned about Jesus, I attended church every Sunday and had respect to God. When I was 20 years old I moved to Barcelona, one day a greeter at church (Iglesia evangelica de Hermanos La Bisbal) invite me to attend to the Sunday school and to the youth group, this was the church where Viky attended, I came in and I continued doing it for a few months, until one day, while in a evangelistic campaign they showed the movie “Jesus” and this day I understood the gospel and Jesus become to be my Lord. I remain attending to church and being involved in very ministries, I also assisted to some credits at seminary (instituto biblico y seminario teologico de España). Later we start to collaborate with L’Arcada camp, At the beginning as a campers and later as a summer staff, after a few years we understood that God was asking us to serve Him full time in this ministry. VIKY I grew up in Barcelona, and when I was 6 years old, my sister (she was 20) became a Christian and she starts to brings me to church, to the Sunday school and also sending me to camps, my parents never say no to that and I’m very thankful for it. I was 8 years old, while in a camp, I accepted Christ as my

Savior. Later, when I was 15 I understood what I did when I was 8 and I leaved my live in the Lord’s hands for wherever He wanted. I remained working for Him at my church and always with the desire to serve God with all my time. At the age of 18 I participate in a year training program called “Timothy Program” which is training in evangelism and discipleship. After many years God was leading us to work full time in camps ministry. TOGETHER We meet each other at church, after a few months dating we get married in November 1986. Dan was born in 1992 and Ruth in 1998. We both were active at church volunteering in different areas; Pedro served on the evangelism committee, preparing the church bulletin and, as a greeter. Viky worked in the Sunday school and helped with the teenage group. Together we leaded the ALPHA program, an evangelistic ministry. In the summers 2001 and 2002, we attended family camp at L’Arcada, after the summer both of us was pretty sure that this was our place to serve, but we decided not to say anything and pray about it, the next year we offered ourselves to volunteer at camp. That fall, L’Arcada offered to us the opportunity to serve leading the “Spain Team” (a group of couples who are more specifically involved in the ministry) and we, of course, agreed to do it. In 2004, after a lot of prayer we went to the staff and share with them what was in our hearts about join them working full time, and they were more than happy about our decision. After more than two years helping there and also sharing with friends and churches about the ministry and the need of support, the director of L’Arcada proposed us to go to the USA to have some training and also to finish our support raising. In 2007/08 we went through a year of training at Camp Forest Springs, in Westboro, Wisconsin, with their program called LTD (Leadership, Training and Development), it is an accredited college curriculum course for camping ministry. In May 2009 we get back to Spain, to start working full time at L’Arcada, even though we need to finish raising our personal financial needs.

CHURCH AFILIATION Our Home church belongs to the “Asambleas de Hermanos” denomination, which means “Assembly of Brothers”; this is an European denomination very similar to Baptist or evangelical free churches in the States. The camp L’Arcada belongs to GEM mission and this is their statement of faith that we agree with.

• We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the infallible, and the authoritative Word of God.

• We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

• We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return to power and glory.

• We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.

• We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.

• We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

• We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in Christ.
