Bismillah-hir-Rahmaan-nir-Raheem (meaning: I start in the name of Allah, The

 Beneficent, The Merciful.)

Dedication:

This salah guide is dedicated to Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessings Be UponHim (p.b.u.h.), my parents who have passed away, all of my teachers and guides who

have taught me and helped me to get to where I am now today. I also feel blessed thatI was able to get this checked by my teacher who provided me with additional

guidance and correction to make this work as best as possible, Allhamdolillah. May

Allah (s.w.a.) reward him doubly for his advice.

This has also been inspired by my two children Alishia and Arij, who do not live withme, to act as a guide for them as well. May Allah, subhanna wata alla (s.w.a.) protect

and guide them and all of our children’s on the Straight Path, Ameen.

Prophet Muhmmmad (p.b.u.h.) has said, “Acquiring knowledge is a necessity for everyMuslim,” and “Those who go out to learn for the sake of teaching others they have gained the

great reward and blessings of 70 siddiqeen (pious people)”. May Allah (s.w.a.) make thelearning process an easy one for you all, Ameen.

Dear brothers and sisters it is very difficult imagine the great rewards one attains . I feel blessed that I have been given this opportunity by Allah (s.w.a.), to both learn and be

guided on this straight path and now I feel totally privileged that I can pass on what Ihave learnt to my brothers and sisters in Islam of all ages. I pray that this Salah

(Namaz) in Easy Steps Guide will help you and guide you as it has helped me in

writing and putting it together for ease of learning and practicing, Inshallah (God

Willing). May Allah (s.w.a.), bless this effort, you and all of the Muslim brothers and

sisters who are taking such an important step. May we all be guided and protected by

Allah (s.w.a.), on His Straight Path, Ameen.

1. Introduction

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Aslaam-o-Alaikum wa Rahmatullahee Wa Barakatuhu,

May Allah (s.w.a.’s) Peace and Blessing be upon you all.

Welcome to My Four Rakaat Salah Book in the Salah (Namaz) in Steps Guideseries. Every Muslim (male) and  Muslima (female) needs to know how to pray Salah

(Namaz) as this is Farz (Obligatory) on every one without any exceptions and

knowing how to pray four rakaat salahs which is a very important part of any

Muslim’s life because it is a part of many salahs that we have to pray every day.

Many people have not been able to learn how to perform salah due to various reasons. This brief step by step guide is to help my brothers and sisters in Islam to learn and

practice this very important act of worship. I have used my knowledge from Sunni

school of thought, in particular, from the perspective of  Imam Abu Hanifa. Therefore,

you may find that there are some small variation’s in the practice of Salah depending

upon which scholar or school of thought you follow.

A simplified step by step approach has been used so that it becomes an easy and an

enjoyable process to learn for all Muslims, inshallah. I have used various resources in

order to produce this guide for which I am grateful and ask  Allah (s.w.a.) to bless each

and everyone for their contribution to this Salah (Namaz) in Easy Steps Guide Series,Ameen.

The glory of all this work is Allah ( s.w.a.’s) and any omissions or oversight are mine

alone. May Allah (s.w.a.) make this an easy process for us all, Inshallah (God

Willing), to both learn how to pray correctly and then to practice regularly. I ask for forgiveness for any oversights or omissions on my part which I may have made

unknowingly from both my learned colleagues and Allah (s.w.a.).

This Salah (Namaz) Guide is for the benefit of numerous brothers and sisters who do

not know either Arabic and/or have no access to a learned teacher who can help themto learn and fulfil their obligatory duty and thus gain many blessings from Allah

(s.w.a.) for honouring their obligatory prayers and duty as practicing Muslims. Also

as you will know that as you start to learn something new it will take some effort and time to get the new knowledge and acquire the new skills necessary for success.

Therefore be patient with yourself and allow your time for the body to get used to the

new movements. For a young child or a very agile and fit person the movements will be very easy or easier than that say someone of my age who has to get used to new

movements. I would also need to take my time and do the best that I can. I strongly

recommend that you do not be too hard on yourselves in this worthy cause of learning

how to pray. The Bismillah has been recited for every sura for ease of learning and

extra swab (pronounced “thawaab”).

I have tried to make the process as easy as possible. I wish you all the best in your efforts and make dua that Allah (s.w.a.) blesses every little effort that you are making

and that He makes the learning and Practice as easy as possible for you, Ameen.

2. The 4 Rakaat Salah

There are two kinds of sunnat salah and a farz salah which has four (4)

rakaats in it. The sunnat salahs are “Muakada”, to be prayed always and

“Ghairmuakada” to be prayed wherever possible. The Sunnat

Ghairmuakada should also be prayed as Sunnat Muakada but you don’t getany gunaa or sins for not praying but you get extra swab (pronounced as

“thawab”) for praying!

(a) 4 Rakaats Sunnat Salah Muakada

This is sunnat salah which Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) always read.Hence, we should always read this as well. Make the niyat or intention,

“I am praying 4 rakaat sunnat muakada for x salah, facing the

kabbah for the sake of Allah (s.w.a.)”

1. Brothers, now touch both of your ears by your thumb and

forefinger of each hand and sisters raise their hands up to their

shoulders and say “ Allahu Akbar” (God is

Great). .

2. Bring your hands down and brothers need to ensure that their

hands are below the naval/belly button with the left hand belowthe right hand the wrist of the left hand being held by the

forefinger and thumb of the right hand, with the back of your

hands facing away from the body and the sisters fold their arms

onto their chest placing the right hand over the left.

Stand up straight and start to read the sana, which is:

“Sub-haana-kal-laa-hum-ma-wa-bee-hamdee-ka wata bara- kassmo- ka wa ta aalaa Jado ka wa la-illaha-ghay-ruka”  which means “Glory unto you, O Allah! All Praise unto you.

Blessed is Your Name and Most High is Your Majesty. There

is none worthy of worship but You”.

Then recite the Ta ow-wuz still standing in the same position.

 A-oozu Bil-laahi Minash-shaitaa-nirra-jeem which means “I

seek protection of Allah from Shaitaan, the accursed”.

Then Recite Sura Fatiha below which is a very important of

every unit (rakaat) of Salah:

Bismillah-hir-rahma-nir-raheem  I start in the name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

Al-Hamdo-Lillahee-Rabbil-Aalameen

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the WorldsArramaan-Nirraheem The Beneficent, Most Merciful

Maalikee-Yowmiddeen  Master of the Day of Judgement

Iyaaka-Nabaduu You Alone we Worship

Wa-Iyaaka-Nasta-Een  And You Alone we ask for Help

Ihdhee-Nas-Seeratal-Musta-Qeem Show us the Right Path

Seerat-Talazeena-Annamta-Alaihim The path of those You have favoured

Gharil-Maghdoobe- Alaihim  Not the Path of those who earn Your anger

Waladh-dhaleen  Not the path of those who go astray

Then say “Ameen” softly.

After reciting the above sura then we need to recite another

sura which is of three ayats (sentences) or longer. As we are

learning we can choose a sura which is both short and easy to

learn. This sura can be used for all of the salah where anadditional sura is a required reading. For the purpose of ease

and great rewards from the outset Sura Ikhlas has been chosento be used as the additional sura for our purpose. This is as

 below:

Bismillah-hir-rahma-nir-raheem  I start in the name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

Qul-Hoowallah-Hu-Aahad Say, He is Allah, the One

Allah-Husamad

 Allah is Eternal and Absolute

Lam-Yalid-Wa-Lam-You-Lad  None is born of Him nor is He born

Wa-Lam-Ya-Kullahu-Kufuwann-Aahad  And there is none like Him

3. Now we say  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great”

and bend down slowly placing hands on our knees and

say Subahaana-Rabbi-ul-Azeem “How

Glorified is my Rabb, the Greatest!” Repeat this three times.

4. Once the above has been recited three times then we

need to straighten up by saying

Samee-Allah-hu-Leemann-Hameedah “Allah has listened tohim/her who has praised Him”

5. As we have straightened and stand straight upwards with hands

hanging by our side we say  Rab-banaa-lakal-

hamd “O our Rabb! All Praise is due to You alone!”

6. Then we again say  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great”

and bend down to do sujood or sajda by touching our forehead

on to the prayer mat or carpet floor in mosque, ideally.

From this position say three times

Subahaana-Rab-biyul-Aalaa “Glorified is

my Rabb, the Most High”. Repeat this once again, as sajood is

done twice by repeating  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is

Great” again and sitting up briefly and saying

Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great” again and going back down todo the second sajood or sajda by touching the forehead onto the

floor and repeating. Subahaana-Rab-

biyul-Aalaa “Glorified is my Rabb, the Most High” three times

as before. This now completes your second sajood or sajda.

Once this is done, then say,  Allah-hu-Akbar “God

Is Great” and stand up straight as shown below in step 7.

7. We need to repeat the above rakaat again, so stand up straight

after the second sajda or sajood. Brothers fold their arms

as shown and sisters fold their hands over their chest. You need

to stand up as shown in the diagram. This is carried out without

reading the sana or tawooz.

8. Then Recite Sura Fatiha below which is a very important part

weight on left leg and toes of the right foot pointing in the

direction of the Kabbah and Sisters sit with their body weighton the floor without any of the restrictions for Brothers. They

can just sit with their weight on the floor or their calves as they

see fit.We now need to read the Tashadud , also known as “atta

Bismillah-hir-rahma-nir-raheem

I start in the name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

Qul-Hoowallah-Hu-Aahad

Say, He is Allah, the One

Allah-Husamad

 Allah is Eternal and Absolute

Lam-Yalid-Wa-Lam-You-Lad

None is born of Him nor is He born

Wa-Lam-Ya-Kullahu-Kufuwann-Aahad

And there is none like Him

21. Now we say  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great”

and bend down slowly placing hands on our knees and

say Subahaana-Rabbi-ul-Azeem “HowGlorified is my Rabb, the Greatest!” Repeat this three times.

Once the above has been recited three times then we

need to straighten up by saying

Samee-Allah-hu-Leemann-Hameedah“Allah has listened to

him/her who has praised Him”

22. As we have straightened and stand straight upwards with hands

hanging by our side we say  Rab-banaa-lakal-

hamd “O our Rabb! All Praise is due to You alone!”

23. Then we again say  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great”and bend down to do sujood or sajda by touching our forehead

on to the prayer mat or carpet floor in mosque, ideally.

From this position say three times

Subahaana-Rab-biyul-Aalaa “Glorified is

my Rabb, the Most High”. Repeat this once again, as sajood is

done twice by repeating  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is

Great” again and sitting up briefly and saying

Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great” again and going back down todo the second sajood or sajda by touching the forehead onto the

floor and repeating. Subahaana-Rab-

biyul-Aalaa “Glorified is my Rabb, the Most High” three times

as before. This now completes your second sajood or sajda.

24. Once this is done, then say,  Allah-hu-Akbar “God

Is Great”. Brothers sit as shown below in the diagram with their

weight on left leg and toes of the right foot pointing in the

direction of the Kabbah and sisters sit with their body weight

on the floor without any of the restrictions for brothers. Theycan just sit with their weight on the floor or their calves as they

see fit.We now need to read the Tashadud , also known as “atta

hajaat” and  Darood Ibraheemi and  Dua supplication in order to complete the fourth unit or rakaat .

In this sitting please we first need to read, Tashadud as below:

Atta-Hiyato-Lillah-Hee-Wasslawatu-Wtiyabaatu-Aslaamoo-Alaika

Ayuhana-Biyu Wa-rahmattullahee-Wa-Barakatu-Hu-

Aslaamo

Alaina-Wa Aaala-Eebadhillahissle-heena- Ashadu-ann-

Laa-Illaha

Illallahu-Wa-Ashadu-Anna-Muhammadan-Aabdu-Hu-Wa-

Rasoolo-Hu

All compliments are for Allah, and prayers and goodness.

Peace be upon you

O Prophet, and Mercy of Allah and His Blessings.

Peace be upon us and on the righteous servants of Allah.

I testify that there is no God except Allah and I testify that

Muhmmad is His servant and Messenger.

As we recite the above when we come to “ Ashadu” we need to

raise the index finger of the right hand and lower it when we

come to “ Illallahu”.

Now we need to recite Darood Ibraheemi.

 Allahuma-salle-ala-Muhammadin-wa-ala-Muhammadin-

Kama-sallaita

 Ala-Ibraheema wa ala-ali-Ibraheema-Innaka-hameedun

majeed

O’Allah, let Your blessings come upon Muhammad and the

family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibraheem and family of

Ibraheem.

TrulyYou are Praisworthy and Glorious.

O’Allah bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as

You blessed the family of Ibraheem. Truly You are

Praiseworthy and Glorious.

We need to make a Dua after the Darood Ibraheemi above tocomplete the four units/rakaats of salah.

 Rabbi-jallni-mooqeemassa-laate-wa-min-zuriyaatee-Rabbnaa-

wa-Taqbball-dua

My Lord, make me steadfast in Salah and also my descendents;our Lord and accept my prayer.

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the Believers on theDay of Judgement.

Now we need to say salaam to complete the two units /rakaatsof salah.

That is “ Aslaam-o-Alaikum-Wa Rehmatullah”

meaning “may the Peace and

Blessing be Upon You” turning your head first to the right in

line with your right shoulder as if you are talking to someone.

Then repeat this by turning your head to the left in line with

your left shoulder. You are indeed talking to someone; there are

two angels on each shoulder recording all your good and bad

deeds.

Your  Four Rakaats Sunnat Muakada Salah has now been

completed. Well done you have done really well!

(b) 4 Rakaats Sunnat Salah Ghairmuakada

This is a Sunnat Salah which Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.)sometimes read and some times he did not. Therefore, we get extra

blessings and swab (pronounced as “thawab”) for reading this part of the Salah for Asar and Isha but if we do not we do not get any ghuna

or acquire sins in our account to be answered to on the Day of

Judgement, Inshallah.

The main difference with the Muakada Sunnat salah we have

discussed earlier is that after completing the second rakaat of the salah we read  Darood Ibraheemi and the Dua’ Rabbi Jalni as well before we

stand up to start the 3rd

Rakaat of the salah. Form your niyat or intention before we start. “I am praying 4 rakaat sala sunnat

ghairmuakada facing the kabbah for the sake of Allah (s.w.a.)”

1. Brothers, now touch both of your ears by your thumb and

forefinger of each hand and sisters raise their hands up to their

shoulders and say “ Allahu Akbar” (God is

2. Bring your hands down and brothers need to ensure that their

hands are below the naval/belly button with the left hand below

the right hand the wrist of the left hand being held by the

forefinger and thumb of the right hand, with the back of your

hands facing away from the body and the sisters fold their arms

onto their chest placing the right hand over left one, palms

facing inwards. Stand up straight and start to read the

Sana, which is:

“Sub-haana-kal-laa-hum-ma-wa-bee-hamdee-ka wata bara-

kassmo- ka wa ta aalaa Jado ka wa la-illaha-ghay-ruka”  which means “Glory unto you, O Allah!

19. We need to repeat the above rakaat again, so stand up straight

after the second sajda or sajood. Brothers fold their arms

as shown and sisters fold their hands over their chest. You need

to stand up as shown in the diagram. This is carried out without

reading the sana or tawooz.

20. Then Recite Sura Fatiha below which is a very important part

of every unit (rakaat) of salah:

Bismillah-hir-rahma-nir-raheem  I start in the name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

Al-Hamdo-Lillahee-Rabbil-Aalameen  All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds

After reciting the above sura then we need to recite another

sura which is of three ayats (sentences) or longer. Sura Ikhlas

is the second sura which is recited. This is as below:

Bismillah-hir-rahma-nir-raheem  I start in the name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

Qul-Hoowallah-Hu-Aahad Say, He is Allah, the One

Allah-Husamad

 Allah is Eternal and Absolute

Lam-Yalid-Wa-Lam-You-Lad  None is born of Him nor is He born

Wa-Lam-Ya-Kullahu-Kufuwann-Aahad  And there is none like Him

21. Now we say  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great”

and bend down slowly placing hands on our knees and

say Subahaana-Rabbi-ul-Azeem “How

Glorified is my Rabb, the Greatest!” Repeat this three times.

Once the above has been recited three times then we

need to straighten up by sayingSamee-Allah-hu-Leemann-Hameedah“Allah has listened to

him/her who has praised Him”20. As we have straightened and stand straight upwards with hands

hanging by our side we say  Rab-banaa-lakal-

hamd “O our Rabb! All Praise is due to You alone!”

21. Then we again say  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great”

and bend down to do sujood or sajda by touching our forehead

on to the prayer mat or carpet floor in mosque, ideally.

From this position say three times

Subahaana-Rab-biyul-Aalaa “Glorified is

my Rabb, the Most High”. Repeat this once again, as sajood is

done twice by repeating  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is

Great” again and sitting up briefly and saying

Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great” again and going back down todo the second sajood or sajda by touching the forehead onto the

floor and repeating. Subahaana-Rab-

biyul-Aalaa “Glorified is my Rabb, the Most High” three times

as before. This now completes your second sajood or sajda.

They

can just sit with their weight on the floor or their calves as they

see fit. We now need to read the Tashadud , also known as

“atta hajaat ” and  Darood Ibraheemi and  Dua supplication inorder to complete the four units or rakaats of this Sunnat

Ghairmukada salah.

In this sitting please we first need to read, Tashadud as below:

As we recite the above when we come to “ Ashadu” we need toraise the index finger of the right hand and lower it when we

come to “illallahu”.

Now we need to recite Darood Ibraheemi.

My Lord, make me steadfast in Salah and also my descendents;our Lord and accept my prayer.

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the Believers on the

Day of Judgement.

Now we need to say salaam to complete the 4 units /rakaats of

Salah.

That is “ Aslaam-o-Alaikum-Wa Rehmatullah”

meaning “may the Peace and

Blessing be Upon You” turning your head first to the right in

line with your right shoulder as if you are talking to someone. Then repeat this by turning your head to the left in line with

your left shoulder. You are indeed talking to someone; there are

two angels on each shoulder recording all your good and bad

deeds.

Your 4 Rakaats Sunnat Ghairmuakada Salah has now been

completed. Well done you have done really well! I am sure thatyour body will by now be getting used to the new movements

which are being learnt. Keep it up!

(c) 4 Rakaats Salah Farz

The farz salah which has 4 rakaats is once again prayed in a different

manner. You are doing great in keeping up what you need to learn in

order to build up your knowledge base to be able to perform the salah in a proper manner and also in order to get the greatest amount of

reward for your efforts.

Now let’s look at the 4 rakaats farz salah which forms a major portionof 3 different salahs which are prayed during the day. The 4 rakaats

salah farz is read as below first make the intention that “I am praying

4 rakaats farz for xy salah, facing the kabbah for the sake of Allah

(s.w.a.)”

1. Brothers, now touch both of your ears by your thumb and

forefinger of each hand and Sisters raise their hands up to their

shoulders and say “ Allahu Akbar” (God is

hands are below the naval/belly button with the left hand below

the right hand the wrist of the left hand being held by the

forefinger and thumb of the right hand, with the back of your

hands facing away from the body and the sisters fold their arms

onto their chest placing the right hand over left one with palms

of the hands facing inwards. Stand up straight and start

to read the Sana, which is:

“Sub-haana-kal-laa-hum-ma-wa-bee-hamdee-ka wata bara-

which means “Glory unto you, O Allah! All Praise unto you.Blessed is Your Name and Most High is Your Majesty. There

is none worthy of worship but You”.

Then recite the Ta ow-wuz still standing in the same position.

A-oozu Bil-laahi Minash-shaitaa-nirra-jeem which means “Iseek protection of Allah from Shaitaan, the accursed”.

Then Recite Sura Fatiha below which is a very important of

Samee-Allah-hu-Leemann-Hameedah“Allah has listened to

him/her who has praised Him”22. As we have straightened and stand straight upwards with hands

hanging by our side we say  Rab-banaa-lakal-

hamd “O our Rabb! All Praise is due to You alone!”

23. Then we again say  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great”and bend down to do sujood or sajda by touching our forehead

on to the prayer mat or carpet floor in mosque, ideally.

From this position say three times

Subahaana-Rab-biyul-Aalaa “Glorified is

my Rabb, the Most High”. Repeat this once again, as sajood is

done twice by repeating  Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is

Great” again and sitting up briefly and saying

Allah-hu-Akbar “God Is Great” again and going back down to

do the second sajood or sajda by touching the forehead onto the

floor and repeating. Subahaana-Rab-

biyul-Aalaa “Glorified is my Rabb, the Most High” three times

as before. This now completes your second sajood or sajda.

24. Once this is done, then say,  Allah-hu-Akbar “God

Is Great”. Brothers sit as shown below in the diagram with their

weight on left leg and toes of the right foot pointing in thedirection of the Kabbah and sisters sit with their body weight

on the floor without any of the restrictions for brothers. Theycan just sit with their weight on the floor or their calves as they

see fit.We now need to read the Tashadud , also known as “atta

hajaat ” and  Darood Ibraheemi and  Dua supplication in order

to complete the fourth unit or rakaat .

In this sitting please we first need to read, Tashadud as below:

Atta-Hiyato-Lillah-Hee-Wasslawatu-Wtiyabaatu-

Aslaamoo-Alaika

Ayuhana-Biyu Wa-rahmattullahee-Wa-Barakatu-Hu-

Aslaamo

Alaina-Wa Aaala-Eebadhillahissle-heena- Ashadu-ann-

Laa-Illaha

Illallahu-Wa-Ashadu-Anna-Muhammadan-Aabdu-Hu-Wa-

Rasoolo-Hu

All compliments are for Allah, and prayers and goodness.

Peace be upon you

O Prophet, and Mercy of Allah and His Blessings.

Peace be upon us and on the righteous servants of Allah.

I testify that there is no God except Allah and I testify that

Muhmmad is His servant and Messenger.

As we recite the above when we come to “ Ashadu” we need to

raise the index finger of the right hand and lower it when we

come to “ Illallahu”.

Now we need to recite Darood Ibraheemi.

That is “ Aslaam-o-Alaikum-Wa Rehmatullah”

Blessing be Upon You” turning your head first to the right in
