to you!

Well here we are, December and the festive season just around the corner so thanks for taking the time to read our Winter issue as we know you are all busy in your day to day lives never mind in the run up to Christmas. To try and make things a little easier we have our special Christmas section with gift ideas from some great independent businesses, Pantos, Days out and Santas grottos are all in there too. And we have worked with the team from Festive Leeds to bring you news of lots of events happening in our area. Delicious recipes for alternatives to Christmas pudding and Snowballs are on page 31 and with great Christmas crafts too there really is something for everyone. If you can’t make it to a

grotto though do visit this fantastic website www.portablenorthpole.tv where you can personalise a video message from Santa – our children were entranced last year and you can watch it over and over again. As well as a time of celebration the festive season is often a time for reflection of family life and new resolutions – We talk to Racheal Swann of Beautiful Swans about weight loss and how taking a different approach than just dieting can provide a permanent solution. David Midgely writes from the heart in this issue of Dad Zone about becoming a Step Dad. In these financially tough times for all of us we have a few flexible working suggestions for you on page 18 as well as loads of great offers for you to enjoy in ‘Shop Til You Drop’ .

Please do mention Boo to anyone you find through the magazine or our website www.boomag.co.uk as it is the advertisers who enable us to bring the magazine to you and without their and your support we wouldn’t be here. So on that note of thanks for all your support throughout 2011 we wish you all the very best for a fun filled and prosperous 2012, have a great time and see you in Spring!

You Time

After the festive excesses many of us make New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and when you think of losing weight you immediately think ‘diet’. If you’ve ever tried to lose weight you’ve probably tried at least one – even if you didn’t follow a commercial one. However, recent research has shown that as a long term solution for most people, a diet will not work in the battle against excess weight. In fact, most people will put back on all the weight they lost and probably more. So why aren’t diets working and what can we do about it? We talk to Rachel Swann of Beautiful Swans who specialises in helping people achieve permanent weight loss.

“Weight gain, unless there is a medical reason such as a thyroid problem, is due to the intake of calories exceeding those used. Scientifically, a diet adds up because you restrict your calorie intake and therefore burn fat. Sounds simple doesn’t it?

However, the problem with that is that for most people weight and eating is tied into their emotions. Comfort and emotional eating is very common and so the emotional side of the problem needs to be addressed as well as the nutritional one.

Many of us have learned to use food to make us feel better; lollipops for being good at the doctors, chocolate when we scraped our knees. We also associate food with good times –going out for meals at birthdays, promotions and anniversaries. Food also forms part of our ‘fun times’; meals with friends for example and ‘celebration times’, like Christmas meaning that we associate it with feeling good. No wonder that when we are feeling down we turn to food to change our mood.

Unfortunately once we start gaining weight our self esteem can plummet. Our feelings about ourselves start to turn negative and so we feel unhappy more often, leading to more comfort eating.

Even if you don’t comfort eat, you may recognise ‘habitual eating’. This is when you eat from an association at a particular time, such as always snacking whilst you watch television, having popcorn at the cinema, or always having takeaway on Fridays.

Separating eating from habits and emotions is the first step in permanent weight loss. By incorporating positive thinking you can help to keep your mood stable and begin to realise that you have the power to choose how to feel. Your mood doesn’t need to be influenced by external events or people or food.

In time you can learn to make the right food choices because you want to and dissociate situations and feelings and emotional hunger from true physical hunger naturally leading to better eating habits and permanent weight loss.”

Rachel Swann is an independent weight loss consultant using strategies including hypnotherapy to change eating habits and boost body confidence. She is based in Leeds and can be contacted by visiting http://leeds.beautifulswans.com/consultations

They call me Dad - Step Dadby David Midgley

I always dreamt I’d meet the woman of my dreams, we’d get married, buy a house, have 2.5 children, a dog and maybe retire in a warm country. Right up to the day I met the woman of my dreams I thought this was my plan then she introduced me to her son. An (almost) fully-grown, pre-teen boy who had just spent the last nine years of his life blissfully not sharing his mummy with anyone. My plan was altered immediately - we did get married, buy a house and a dog but there was no honeymoon period while we discussed when to have a baby - we had one a large, opinionated, 9 going on 39 year old baby. There were days, early on, when I thought a ready-made family was too much for me. There were also days when I thought I was the luckiest man on earth. I have to be honest it didn’t come easy and it didn’t come naturally at first. Sometimes all I wanted was time with this amazing woman alone - a holiday without a third wheel, a romantic dinner, a spontaneous date. There were times that I felt like the third wheel, inside jokes they shared, memories, a

bond I wasn’t a part of made me feel like an outsider, an intruder into their world. I struggled with discipline - should I or shouldn’t I. Especially before we were married it was hard to know the line. I felt like my words fell on deaf ears and in arguments my wife always picked a side and it was hardly ever mine. I toughed it out though - I faced parents evenings like I’d been doing it all my life, PTA meetings like I was made to be there, and when the day came to have ‘the talk’ I climbed the stairs to his room armed with my encyclopaedia with the confidence of a man who had been born to give the father son birds and bees talk. I enjoyed every minute of been a ready made dad and on the day I drove my stepson and a car full of his friends to the movies and he casually called me dad in front of mates I only just managed to hold back the tears.6 years later, we have another baby too, I’m a seasoned professional at this dad business. We are tackling the terrible twos with the moody teen years. I look back at our journey and while I am now greyer and older than I was before, I can honestly say these have been the best

years of my life. There is no bigger better gift than children, I would recommend it to everyone. I am blessed to have two wonderful boys and I’m blessed that everyday my boys call me dad!

We all try and do it, family, work, friends, housework the list goes on. It used to be a simple decision that, more often than not, when women married and had children they gave up their job and that was that, but in these times when many families need two incomes it can be hard to find work that fits in with your family lifestyle. So we took a look around and found some suggestions for flexible work, that have proven to be a successful solution for some local women from Leeds, do feel free to give any of them a call for chat to see how they have made it work for themselves and their families, you might just find something that works for you.

There is a need for some mums to socialise with other mums and also have flexible work options in order for them to fit work into their priorities as a mum. Here is the perfect solution - you can do your parties whenever you want with your baby or child, or after they are fast asleep in bed and you can take orders from anyone at anytime. There are no targets, there are no pressures, but equally there is a huge opportunity to earn extra cash whilst just being an everyday mum. So, you choose what you earn, and we will give you the tools, the support and the fabulous products in order for you to have that choice available to you.If you would like to become a consultant or find out some more information first then please call Ruth on 07800 881203 or email [email protected]

What’s it all about? In our regular feature we will be reviewing a few of the local classes so that you get more insight into what goes on before you head along. If you are interested in reviewing a class for Boo please send an email to [email protected].

Elev8 DanceTake That have done it, Eric Clapton has done it, Elton John has done it - and so have the pupils of Elev8 dance academy – what- I know you are thinking? Played at the Royal Albert Hall !

What an amazing life experience for the pupils, and after seeing them re-create their performance for those who were unable to go to London I decided to find out more about what was on offer.

Elev8 Dance Academy is based in Calverley, Pudsey, run by Helen Holmes and offers a wide variety of classes for children aged from 2 and a half upwards but it was the boys’ only Street Dance class that I went along to see. There I found a group of boys, from different schools, areas and backgrounds all just having a really good time. It was great to see boys of a range of ages and sizes work with their teacher Miss McEnery to choreograph a new routine, everyone’s input was listened to even some of their more daring ideas! The boys head along every Saturday and to be honest I was surprised to find that they were so engaged. Even with the increase in popularity of Streetdance due to groups like Diversity I

was still of the opinion that pre teen boys just played football, skateboarded and hung out so really enjoyed seeing them getting really into the dancing. The classes build up but not only the technical skills required but camaraderie and trust too (you have to trust your team when you are being thrown about!) Speaking to the boys afterwards they said they thought it was ‘A really good laugh, but enjoyed doing the shows too’ the academy offers pupils the chance to perform in public on a regular basis – not always the Royal Albert Hall but nevertheless giving the pupils the chance to get up there and show people how much they have learnt and how much they love it - and for me that is what really shone through, something that may be considered uncool for a bunch of boys really was quite the opposite!

Kumon I think that most parents wish for good health, happiness and self confidence for their children. And when I headed along to the Horsforth Kumon Centre to find out what Kumon was all about, I walked away with a real sense that what was on offer was more than Maths and English, but a whole set of skills to help our children in today’s ever changing society.

Let me explain – Kumon is a programme of study that centres on core Maths and English skills but does this by teaching the children how to study independently, to believe in their abilities and develop self confidence – and this was very evident at the study centre run by Carmen Ellis. The centre was set up in a classroom structure but that was where the direct comparison to a traditional school room stops. The sessions are drop-in so the children arrive at different times and stay for however long it takes them to work through that day’s worksheets - always at their own pace. Each child is assessed when they start and they progress through a set of worksheets each day. With no two children necessarily working on the same sheets at the same time, the study really is tailored to each child’s

specific needs. The sheets are then marked and the work for the next period is determined by their results. It sounds a little complicated but what you see is that the students are always working to their ability. They’re still being challenged, but being allowed to build their confidence by ensuring they have one skill honed before being moved on to the next. Assistance and advice was on hand from Carmen and her team at all times, but what I witnessed was the children using the adults as a means to verbally work their way through the question they were tackling, rather than looking to them for answers. The children I met (aged between 6 and 16), had come to Kumon for different reasons. Some were there because their level of ability was ahead of the national average so they were learning additional skills at Kumon. Others were there to cement some of the basic Maths and English concepts which had eluded them at school, causing them to fall behind in the classroom. But what I witnessed was that whatever the initial driver for children to join the study centre, the parents were of unanimous opinion that being there had not only improved

their Maths and English, but had aided their children in a bigger way. It had made them believe that through independent study and focus, they could achieve. Skills I believe they’ll really need in this world. If you are interested in finding out more, please give Carmen a call on 0113 257 1700

Supper ClubWe all love being cooked for, it feels like a real treat doesn’t it – so here at Boo, where we are a real bunch of not so secret foodies, we were so excited to hear about Supper Club Yorkshire. The brainchild of Lucie Pritchard and Andy Ewen, who have been working in the catering industry for the past 32 years feeding generations of families from the Outside In restaurant in Horsforth. Who, after seeing the continual offers from various supermarkets of Dine for £5, £10, felt that they could provide convenient, fresh, preservative free locally produced and to be frank tastier offerings at affordable prices, they were already doing it for their family and friends so they decided to take the leap and Supper Club Yorkshire was born. Providing a inspired weekly menu , this week’s include Smoked Haddock, Leek and Mature Cheddar Fishcakes, Steak and Ale Pie and Moussaka – something I for one love but can never be bother to make! They offer an economic solution for today’s busy families and hectic lifestyles something we all know lots about. Supper clubs meals can be delivered weekly, monthly, at weekends, mid-week basically whenever you need it.

How it works You join their text list by contacting Lucie on 07946 533287 Each week you get sent a menu by text or email or can see it on the website If fancy what you see, you order it

Suppers are made freshly to order They are then delivered in returnable

ceramic dishes , wish you can dine with minimum effort and fuss as they can be baked, microwaved

and even frozen and re-heated. You enjoy the decadent and delicious

supper, with family and friends – they can cater your dinner party so you can concentrate on your guests rather than cooking for not much more than the price of the ingredients and much less effort, or even fool your mother in law that you have the cooking prowess of Nigella!

Then repeat as required, you can get weekly suppers, weekend 2 and 3 course meals, one off dinner parties, birthday parties, Christmas visitors anytime you need them –I think it would make a great gift for someone who has just had a baby who needs some nutritious tasty meals but only has energy to open the packet of biscuits! From £3.50 per portion and at £7.50 for 3 courses at the weekend , I believe it really is an affordable option for many of us who having potentially worked all week, looked after the children, done the housework, cleaned, washed and ironed don’t always have the inclination to then whip up a sumptuous meal . To find out more call Lucie on 07946533287 or visit www.yorkshiresupperclub.com

FoodRecipe Swap

Every Christmas we find ourselves wondering what alternatives there might be to the festive ‘usual suspects’. So we spoke to Fiona Rotheray a food specialist with over 20 years catering experience and co founder of Fish&

Jamaican Black Cake

For an alternative to Christmas pudding you could try Jamaican Black Cake, a brandy soaked fruit pudding served at Christmas and Weddings that traditionally uses

gravy browning to give the cake its striking colour and caramel flavour.

Ingredients170g flour 225g margarine or butter 225g ounces sugar 4 eggs 450g raisins 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice 1/2 teaspoon salt 110g mixed peel 110g cherries 225g pound prunes (chopped) 227ml brandy 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla finely grated rind of 1 lime/lemon 2 tablespoons browning

MethodGrease and line a 20cm round cake tin. Pre heat oven to 180°C (350°F).Gas mark 4Cream together the butter, sugar and browning until soft and fluffy. Sieve all dry ingredients together then beat the eggs and brandy together.Add egg mixture to creamed butter and sugar then stir in the fruits.Add flour and fold in. Do not over-beat when mixing. Bake for 1 1/2 hours. For a particularly boozy version of this cake the fruit can be

soaked in the brandy for several weeks before making the cake and stored in a kilner jar until ready to use. Much like English Christmas cakes Jamaican black cake can be baked in advance if wrapped well and stored in an air tight container

Cola de MonoStaying in South America I found this Chilean Christmas drink with the fabulous name of ‘Cola de Mono’ or tail of the monkey.

Ingredients1.5 ltr milk250g sugar2 cinnamon sticks500ml aguardiente (a Chilean alcoholic drink)4tbls instant coffee1.5 tsp of vanilla extract

MethodCombine the milk, sugar and cinnamon in a small saucepan and bring to the boil.Remove from the heat and dissolve the instant coffee in the milk mixture.Leave to go cold and then add the aguardiente.Chill and then serve over ice.

White ChristmasWhite Christmas is the apt name of this classic Australian Christmas treat. It is really easy and great to make with kids. It can be wrapped in little muslin bags for gifts or served with coffee to finish off dinner. Australians make these with a product called copha which is a type of refined coconut oil but a mix of vegetable oil and creamed coconut works just as well.

Ingredients170g hard vegetable oil

80g creamed coconut140g pure icing sugar180g sultanas100g chopped glace cherries100g finely chopped dried apricots85g desiccated coconut110g full cream milk powder40g rice krispies

MethodLine a 18cm x 28cm baking tin Melt the vegetable oil and creamed coconut together in a

small saucepan over a low heat.Sift the icing sugar into a large bowl and add the sultanas, cherries, apricots, desiccated coconut, milk powder and rice krispies. Add the melted oil and coconut mixture and stir until really well combined.Transfer the mixture to the prepared tin and press down with the back of a spoon.Wrap in cling film and refrigerate until set. Cut into small squares to serve.

What’s New

Tennis Tots launches Tennis Tots Plus!Tennis Tots is very excited to introduce its new programme Tennis Tots Plus, as seen on ITV, which is aimed at children aged 4-6 years of age. Building on the success of the already well established leading tennis play and coaching programme for pre-schoolers Matt Turk and his team have developed classes for children up to the age of 6 across North and West Yorkshire.Building on the motor skill development and the early years learning goals from stage one the Tennis Tots Plus

programme introduces children to more racket skills helping them become more familiar with how to control the ball from both sides of the body. In this stage, children will further develop their striking and receiving skills as well as being encouraged to work in pairs and as part of a team. Children will progress their counting and language skills as they develop more independence and get more comfortable listening to instructions and carrying out more complex tasks. Above all else, the Tennis Tots programme emphasises fun whilst providing a well rounded curriculum for children to learn alongside their parents. Tennis Tots Plus classes are currently running in Cookridge, Horsforth,

Roundhay and Harrogate with more classes, including Saturday sessions being added so pop over to www.tennis-tots.co.uk for more details – or why not try it out using the free trial voucher on page 35? To find out more call Matt on 07725339257 or email [email protected]

Leeds mum raises concerns about NHS cuts with Stuart Andrew MPLocal mum Nicola Emsley met Stuart Andrew MP at Bliss, the special care baby charity’s parliamentary event to report on frontline cuts to nurses caring for babies born too soon, too small and too sick in England. The event, hosted by Chris Heaton-Harris MP for Daventry, comes after Bliss found that one in every three units caring for premature and sick babies in England are making cuts to their

nursing workforce through redundancies, freezing vacancies or downgrading nurses. Bliss released a report last year that found that 1,150 extra neonatal nurses were needed to provide care for premature and sick babies. Since then, almost 140 frontline nursing posts have been cut, putting vulnerable babies at risk. Bliss wants all babies to receive the highest level of care delivered by the right number

of specialist nursing staff as there is strong evidence to show that increasing the ratio of specialist nurses to babies in intensive care heightens their chance of survival and improves their long term health outcomes. Nicola, who now runs the Leeds Bliss family support group said “I just hope that the Health Secretary will listen and take action to help these most vulnerable patients.’The Leeds Bliss family support group, meet on the last Wednesday of every month at 1.30pm at Rawdon Trinity Church Hall, New Road Side, Rawdon. For more information please contact Nicola Emsley on [email protected].
