REPORT OF OUT PARTICIPATION IN SHIMMUTA BONANZA

UDSM 24TH AUGUST 2013

1.0 INTRODUCTION

It’s with great pleasure I’d like to share with you the outstanding performance of OUT players in the

bonanza which was prepared by the Inter-parastatal and non-parastatal Sports Federation of Tanzania

(SHIMMUTA) on 24/08/2013. The bonanza involved 16 teams namely: Tanzania Telecommunications

Company Limited (TTCL), College of Business Education (CBE), Dar es Salaam Institute of

Technology (DIT), Ardhi University, University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Public Service Pension

Fund (PSPF) and Open University of Tanzania (OUT). Others are Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA),

Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) and Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS). The list also

included Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), Stanbic

Bank, Muhimbili University for Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Institute of Finance

Management (IFM) and Fastjet.

The bonanza started with warm up exercise for all participants at the main football ground and was

followed by the first football and netball matches as we waited for the arrival of the guest of honor.

Coincidentally both OUT football and netball were planned in the opening games and they both came

out as winners.

After the first matches, we were graced by the arrival of the guest of honor, the Vice Chancellor of

UDSM Prof. R. Mukandala who emphasized the importance of sports among workers as it helps in

building cordial working environment. The guest of honor finished his speech by calling upon the

management teams of the various organization to make sport a part of their activities as it helps in

freshening the minds of workers.

2.0 GAMES PARTICIPATED AND RESULT

2.1 FOOTBALL

I’m happy to inform you that OUT football team was crowned the overall winner in the football game.

Our team played four matches and the results were as follows:

a) TANESCO (0) VS OUT (1)

b) PSPF (0) VS OUT (O)

c) UDSM (3) VS OUT (4)

d) ARU (2) VS OUT (5)

The third and fourth games came to an end through penalties, though tough our team were able to come

out as winners due to team work and perseverance

2.2 NETBALL

It’s been a while now since OUT netball team has been undergoing training sessions, the SHIMMUTA

bonanza offered an opportunity to some trainee to make use of the acquired skills. The netball

competition had teams from ARU, UDSM, IFM, NHIF, TBS, TANESCO, MUHAS and TPA. OUT

team was able to compete against TBS and NHIF and the results were:

These two games left Open University of Tanzania in the second position.

2.3. CHICKEN CHASE

Chicken race was limited to participants of both sex who were aged 55 years and above. In the picture

above our famous Mzee Osama took part in the chase. (far right in green shirt).

2.4 TUG OF WAR

Like the chicken chase the tug of war involved both male and female participants, unfortunately the

OUT female members did not participate in this game but their counterparts were able to represent us

although most participants had already left the premises so the tug of war game did not get any winner.

2.5 SACK RACE

Here is another game in which OUT was able to come out in the second place, a position we attained

through our male participant.

2.6 APPLE EATING

Among all the games this was the most popular game and was cheered by most of the participant.

Unlike the female participant where the was no competition, the male participants displayed a splendid

competitive game of which the best three winners had to repeat the game as some rules were broken

during selection of the winner. The rules of the game included keeping ones hand crossed at the back at

all times of the game, if the apple was to fall the participant was supposed to go down on knees and eat

the apple from the floor with the hands at the back. The winner of the game was the preson who could

eat the apple in three minutes.

OUT did it again!! Thanks to Daudi Cornelly who won the first time and proved to everyone that he had

won fairly in the second round of the game.

3.0 APPRECIATION

Lastly, may I take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the OUT SHIMMUTA bonanza participants for their outstanding performance in all the games. I understand it wasn’t easy but through their commitment and cooperation they placed OUT in the winning positions. My special thanks also go out to all those who did not participate in the games but were there to cheer the OUT team and to the others who couldn’t make it but offered us their moral support. The OUT SHIMMUTA bonanza participants are also grateful to Prof T. Mbwette who

facilitated our participation. With such results it’s my belief that we can do even better in the coming SHIMMUTA games. Let us work together to maintain our new status of being winners and not mere participants.
