designs as well as nine new luxe sites. Homes are expected to be completed from June through to the end of the year. Civil works are also progressing well at Stage Three of the resort.

We also had some exciting news about our much-anticipated GemLife Lennox Head development, with the necessary certification being received, allowing us to submit plans for Development Approval and take the project to the next stage. Stay tuned for updates!

From the GemLife family to yours, stay well, take care and happy International Day of Families and Mother’s Day.

Director’s MessageTHE PAST MONTH HAS BEEN FULL OF CHALLENGES DUE TO THE EXTRAORDINARY TIMES WE ARE LIVING IN. BUT CHALLENGES ASIDE, ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS I’VE OBSERVED OVER THE PAST SEVERAL WEEKS IS THE TREMENDOUS SENSE OF COMMUNITY AMONGST OUR HOME OWNERS. THE EXTENDED GEMLIFE FAMILY, INCLUDING OUR EMPLOYEES, HAS RISEN TO THE CHALLENGE, LENDING A HELPING HAND AND SUPPORTING EACH OTHER IN MORE WAYS THAN I CAN COUNT. IT’S BEEN TRULY HEART-WARMING TO WITNESS THE DAY-TO-DAY ACTS OF KINDNESS BEING CARRIED OUT ACROSS ALL OUR RESORTS.

With 15 May being the International Day of Families, this issue of The Gem is dedicated to families - both in the literal sense and in the wider sense. GemLife is lucky to have residents with all kinds of talents and skills and this month members of our extended GemLife family share some tips, pointers and advice on some great things to do while we’re all being encouraged to stay at home. From gardening tips to at-home yoga poses, thank you to all our residents who shared!

One of our biggest initiatives in April was the successful launch of GemLife Eats, a service that delivers free healthy and delicious meals to residents with the aim of reducing trips to the supermarket and aid in social distancing. The feedback from our Bribie, Maroochy Quays, Highfields and Woodend residents has been tremendous and the team is looking forward to delivering more great meals in May.

Construction at all our sites has been powering ahead, with excellent progress across the board.

On the Sunshine Coast, GemLife Pacific Paradise is coming along quickly with construction of homes having begun.

Likewise, there was good progress in Stage Two at GemLife Maroochy Quays. This stage offers buyers something very different from other stages with a combination of double-storey, split-level and single-level homes.

Stage Four at GemLife Bribie Island is well-under way with the completion of 11 new display homes along with a one-of-a-kind luxe new waterfront villa, The Gem, GemLife’s largest display home to date.

Construction is well under way in Woodend, with Stage Two featuring three new home

Creative connectivity & family fun

Many GemLife residents - and employees - have been having a ball learning how to use video chatting to keep in touch with family and friends while in “iso”.

Bribie residents, Kath and Wayne Ferguson are newbies to the Zoom video, phone and chat platform. After some initial frustrations getting it user-ready, a hurdle they jumped with a helping hand from their I.T. savvy neighbour Kerry, the couple and their family are loving it.

“We had our Easter celebrations and drinks on Zoom and the call went for four hours!” said Kath.

“It was such a fun day. We chatted, ate together and played games like trivia and Celebrity Heads,” she said.

“It definitely helps keep us all sane.”

GemLife Woodend residents Lynne and Gordon Ray are also newbies to the world of video chatting but have taken to the tech with gusto.

“We had no idea about video chatting, we had used FaceTime when on holidays but didn’t have a clue about Messenger and video chatting,” Lynne admitted.

“Our eldest grandson, Will, who is 14, video chatted and taught us whilst online - it was a miracle to his grandad and I!” she said.

“We have felt pretty lost without our grandkids as I believe we all do. The video chat times with these munchkins have been hilarious, and were awesome on Easter Sunday, we got to see them open their eggs etc,” she said.

“It’s tough being in iso at times,

but with our great community here, we are never really alone and the tech brings the family closer together. We not only see the grandkids, but family interstate, all while keeping safe.”

GemLife Highfields Sales Manager Rachael Benham is another convert to video calls, recently learning the ropes for House Party, another video group chat platform.

Rachael now has a weekly video call with friends near and far, all of whom she’s known since her school days, with one now living in Hong Kong.

“It’s good fun and a really nice way to reconnect. There’s six of us and it feels like we’re in the same room,” she said.

“It’s really lovely and I’d recommend giving it a go.”

Here are some ways to help you stay connected from a distance:

• A simple phone-call - set up a phone schedule and talk to your family on a regular basis.

• Get everyone together again (from a distance, of course) with a group video call. Platforms such as Skype, Facebook, Signal, Microsoft Teams, WhatsApp, Zoom or House Party are perfect for video chats with more than two people.

• Play games. Facebook has a wide range of interactive games to choose from, or try www.jigsawplanet.com, and see who can solve a puzzle the fastest.

• If you’ve recently moved to GemLife or your family hasn’t had the opportunity to visit the resort, why not give a virtual house tour over a video chat!

OUR NEW FREE MEAL SERVICE A HUGE SUCCESS

Last month GemLife launched GemLife Eats, a free service delivering delicious, fresh meals straight to the doors of residents, ready to reheat or freeze and save for later.

For our Queensland resorts, the meals are prepared by GemLife’s incredibly talented chef, Matt Conquest. For our GemLife Woodend resort in Victoria, the meals are being prepared by Chef Thierry Bertalmio and team from Woodend’s much loved Paysanne Cafe.

The service has been incredibly popular among residents with countless positive reviews and we have loved seeing residents getting creative with how they enjoy their meals. Here are some snapshots from the first month of GemLife Eats’ deliveries across our resorts.

AFTER THREE YEARS ON THE ROAD, EXPLORING EVERY STATE OF AUSTRALIA BY CARAVAN, MURRAY AND BARBARA MCKAY MOVED TO GEMLIFE BRIBIE ISLAND LAST MONTH TO ESTABLISH A HOME BASE.

The adventurous caravaning couple discovered GemLife after hearing about it from friends and fellow residents Trish and Warren Brown and couldn’t be happier with their choice.

“It’s nice to have a home again,” said Barbara.

“There is still a lot that we want to see and do but with the current climate that isn’t going to happen for a little while. We’ll take this time to unpack and settle down for a bit, but as soon as things settle down we plan on doing more caravan trips,” she said.

Caravaning has always been an

important part of the McKay’s lifestyle, Murray came from a family of caravaners before introducing it to Barbara and their children.

“We started caravaning when our children were very young. Back then we had tents and then bought our first caravan with bunk beds when our children were still in primary school. But now our children have their own children, so it’s just the two of us on our travels,” said Barbara.

The couple’s three-year caravan tour around the country had been in the works for a long time.

“We’ve done a lot of overseas travel while we were both working and we always said that once we retire and are able to take our time we will travel around Australia. It has been amazing.”

“There have been so many highlights, such as riding camels in Broom for example. But I would have to say my favourite places so far have been Adelaide and the Horizontal Falls in Western Australia,” said Barbara.

“It was absolutely magnificent, it’s very difficult to describe and to imagine horizontal waterfalls, it’s something you need to see.”

The McKays were very pleased to secure caravan storage onsite at GemLife but hope that their caravan won’t need to be in storage for much longer.

“Once we are able to do so, we are planning on hitting the road again. We want to follow the Murray River from New South Wales to Victoria to South Australia.

“There are still lots of things we want to do and places we want to see.”

While you may not be able to hop in your caravan and hit the road for a while, it’s never too soon to start planning your next trip! If you’ve already got a destination in mind but are unsure of the best route to take, try using a journey planner such as roadtrippers.com/australia or www.camparoundaustralia.com.au/road-trip-planner/

Take the pressure off by getting organised early and have a packing list you can check off as you go. While different destinations will likely require slightly different things, here is a short checklist to help you prepare for any trip:

• Check fire alarm, replace the battery if needed

• Dishwashing detergent, plug, sponges, tea towels

• BBQ wipes, car or canvas cleaners, big sponge, old towel

• Mats for inside and outside the caravan

• Folding chairs

• Small bin & bin liners

• Large bag for dirty clothes, pegs and washing powder, clothesline

• Cards, board games, reading material, pens

• Umbrella, wet weather gear, sun protection, hats

• Chargers for any devices you take

• Toiletries & bath towels

• Extension cord/s for car fridge & caravan on a powered site

LIFELONG GARDENER RUTH MCLAINE’S COLORFUL BACKYARD AND PATIO, FILLED WITH TASTY VEGGIES AND BRIGHT BLOOMS, QUICKLY CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF FELLOW RESIDENTS AFTER SHE MOVED TO GEMLIFE WOODEND EARLIER THIS YEAR.

Ruth and her husband moved to GemLife ten months ago after deciding to downsize their ten-acre property just south of Mount Macedon in order to spend less time on maintenance and more time doing things they enjoy.

“We looked at a couple places similar to GemLife but didn’t like all the extra costs like the exit fees. That’s what initially drew us into GemLife, the fact that we own our home and just pay rent for the land so we still get to keep all the capital gains on our home,” said Ruth.

Gardening has been a hobby of Ruth’s for the majority of her life, and one that she says is the perfect at-home activity for people of all ages.

“I started gardening when I was a child after I found a Jockey’s Cap lily bulb in our laneway and I planted it at home. It had the most magnificent flower and my gardening just continued from there and has never stopped,” she said.

Gardening is a hobby that can be done year round with

the proper plants.

“I love plants and flowers with lots of perfumes and colours. I have a variety of plants that flower and release different perfumes at different times of the year, so there is always something,” said Ruth.

Gardening is a terrific way to bring life into your home and make the most of this period of social distancing.

When you’re in a confined space you need to have things around you that are

meaningful.

“When you’re in a confined space you need to have things around you that are meaningful. While we’re stuck around here there’s plenty of chances to do things, people just have to be willing to get their hands a bit dirty.”

With years of experience and many trials and errors, Ruth has plenty of knowledge to share with those who are interested in getting started with a garden of their own in the coming months.

“A good tip for beginners, especially if you don’t want to spend lots of time hand-watering all your plants, is to get pots with a water jacket on the bottom. You can get them at Bunnings and then your plants won’t need watering as regularly,” said Ruth.

“Here at Woodend, you need to make sure to get plants that will survive the frost during the cold months. Daffodils work great, and there are plenty of them at shops at the moment, cyclamen, lilies and Winter Sweet are fantastic for winter and are going to start flowering again soon. Winter Sweets

have beautiful dusty yellow flowers that smell heavenly on winters nights.”

For those less interested in flowers and perfumes, a vegetable garden is a good alternative.

“We’ve always had a veggie garden and we have lettuce growing in tubs and tomatoes ripening against the fence in our backyard. Spinach and parsley both work well this time of year,” said Ruth.

GEMLIFE BRIBIE ISLAND

The optimism and social spirit is alive and well here at Bribie Island with residents finding creative ways to connect with each other such as dinners on the street with neighbours and a resort-wide cheer squad putting on weekly parades.

The progress continues here at our beautiful coastal resort with construction on Stage Four continuing to power ahead. We are expecting to have eight stylish, new, move-in ready stock homes by the beginning of next month. If you would like to come take a look we are still currently able to do inspections for prospective homeowners by appointment only with no more than two people at a time.

I am excited to announce that our brand new displays are finished and they look absolutely

amazing. We will be opening these to view once all the restrictions are lifted and we get back to some normality.

BRIBIE ISLAND SOCIAL UPDATE

BRIBIE RESIDENTS ARE KEEPING THEIR COMMUNITY SPIRIT UP AND FINDING INNOVATIVE WAYS TO INTERACT WITH THEIR NEIGHBOURS.

Residents Paul and June Beale, along with other homeowners with their own buggies, have formed a cheer committee to spread joy around the GemLife Bribie Island community.

“Many of us have our own buggies so the homeowners committee suggested that one Saturday afternoon people could sit in their garages, come out and see each other again from a safe distance and we could drive by in our buggies and cheer people up,” said June.

“It was a lot of fun and it was so popular that we decided to keep it going. Some people decorate their buggies and some of them play music. It’s a fun, light-hearted activity during these times.”

The Bribie Island cheer committee did a special drive-by on June and Paul’s 50th wedding anniversary and for Easter the following week.

GEMLIFE WOODEND

Progress continues with the build-out of Stage Two. Tradespeople are still on-site and working hard to finish our modern low-maintenance homes and our stunning lakeside country club is really starting to take shape.

GemLife Eats rolled out at Woodend this past month, teaming up with Chef Thierry Bertalmio from Paysanne Cafe to bring delicious home cooked meals straight to our residents’ front doors once a week. The response has been incredibly positive from our lovely residents and we can’t wait to see what tasty new meals are in store for the month of May.

Social distancing can be tough but it is good to see our residents taking care of themselves and looking out for one another. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area and many of our

residents have been getting out for daily walks enjoying the fresh country air.

I am looking forward to sharing more updates with you all in the coming months as the resort progresses. For more information about GemLife Woodend please call our friendly sales team on the numbers below.

Iso-friendly chair yoga poses

GEMLIFE WOODEND RESIDENT JULIE RITCHI, A FULLY-QUALIFIED YOGA INSTRUCTOR, BELIEVES YOGA IS FOR EVERYONE AND SOMETHING THAT CAN BE EASILY INCORPORATED INTO RESIDENTS’ DAILY ROUTINES, EVEN WHEN ‘STAYING AT HOME’.

Julie, who started a seated yoga class for Woodend residents shortly after moving to the resort, has adapted to the current coronavirus times by creating a program of simple, gentle, stay-at-home chair yoga poses that anyone can try at home. Many GemLife Woodend residents have already been using the program and Julie is more than happy to share her yoga knowledge with the entire extended GemLife family too.According to Julie, seated yoga is suitable for all ages and ability levels - poses can easily be modified for each practiser’s needs. The movement and breathing helps clear the mind and reduces stress, as well as improving balance, flexibility and strength in a gentle, low-impact way.Julie, having injury issues of her own, also says chair yoga is great for people restricted by pain issues associated with injuries old and new.She stresses the importance of listening to your body and respecting its limits on any given day. If you feel discomfort or strain while doing a pose, gently

come out of the posture and rest.Julie has kindly created a half-hour video for residents to do a gentle seated yoga program at home. Once you’ve completed the suggested warm-ups (see below), head to https://vimeo.com/410487556 to get started.

Picture perfectEnter GemLife’s ‘A whole new life’ photo competition

Our GemLife ‘A whole new life’ calendar competition has been getting tons of beautiful pictures from across all resorts from current and future residents over the past couple of months.

With photos of pets, gardens, lakes, the country club and wildlife flooding in, the competition is fierce to be featured in the GemLife 2021 ‘ A Whole New Life’ calendar.

Each month one winner will be chosen from across all GemLife resorts, and at the end of the year, twelve photos will be selected to be featured in a GemLife 2021 lifestyle calendar.

GemLife Sales & Marketing Director, Andrew Coulter, said the competition is a great way for current and future residents to share their new life experiences with others and explore their artistic side.

“GemLife is full of creative residents and is home to a number of professional and amateur photographers. We’re looking for anything from

the ordinary to the extraordinary, what we really want to see is what residents love most about their GemLife community and surrounds,” he said.

While photos do not need to be professionally taken, all photos should be high resolution and submitted in 2MB, jpeg format. While residents will be credited in the calendar, GemLife reserves the right to alter or re-use any submitted photos and winners are not guaranteed a photo in the calendar.

Monthly winners will receive a complimentary bottle of wine!

The competition will run until 30 September 2020, with all submissions to be sent to [email protected].

Congratulations to Livio Piva from Bribie Island, winner for the month of April!
