Pri nt i ngThePat t ernPi eces:Pattern pieces for the body of the bag and the inner pocket are NOT required for this pattern. You can cut the pieces you require using the Fabric Table above. You WILL need to print and assemble the pattern pieces for the flap (2a, 2b, 2c, 2d). All pattern pieces can be found at the end of the pattern instructions. Print the pattern pages you require on A4 or letter-sized paper. IMPORTANT ensure page scaling is set to NONE or Actual Size and the 2 test square on pattern piece 2a (page 24) measures correctly. Const ruct i ngThePat t ern: Tape the pattern pieces together by matching 1a to 1b, 1c to 1d and then 1a/b to 1c/d etc., matching up the grey rectangles as you go. I have thoroughly enjoyed creating this pattern and hope you like it too! Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 4 1. Cut out your pieces so you end up with the following as shown: !6 bag body pieces !3 flap pieces !1 strap piece !1 magnetic snap + 2 fusible stabilizer pieces !3 inner pocket pieces 2. Fuse your pieces of light-medium weight interfacing to the wrong side of your bag body, flap and pocket pieces as follows !Fuse the corresponding interfacing pieces to the outer fabric pieces for your bag body (in this case, the denim pieces) !Fuse the corresponding interfacing piece to the outer fabric piece for your flap (in this case, the chevron/zigzag cotton fabric)!Fuse the corresponding interfacing piece to the wrong side of one of your pocket pieces Prepari ngYourPi eces Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 5 3. Take your piece of fabric for the strap and fold it in half lengthwise with wrong sides together, matching long side to long side. Press. 4. Open out your strap and fold one side into the middle and press. Fold the second side into the middle and press. Refold your strap in half and press again. 5. Using a slightly longer stitch length (around 3-3.5mm), stitch down the side of the strap where the two halves meet, using a 1/8 (0.3cm) seam allowance to close. Next, stitch down the other, folded side, again using a 1/8 (0.3cm) seam allowance. Finally, stitch down the center of the strap at approximately 1 (2.5cm) in from each side. 6. If you have a label, attach it to one end of your strap with the bottom edge sitting 2 (5cm) up from the raw edge of your strap. Stitch to attach using a narrow (1/16 (0.2cm)) seam allowance. Set your strap aside for now. two rows of stitching down each side of the strap and one row of stitching down the middle 2 (5cm) up from raw edge of strap Creat i ngYourSt rap Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 6 7. Take your two pieces of fabric for your inner slip pocket and place them right sides together as shown. Note: if you have used directional fabric for your pocket, make sure both pieces are orientated the same way. 8. Along one of the longer sides, mark a turn through gap in the center as follows !Small = 2 (5cm) gap !Large = 2! (6.4cm) gap Pin and stitch all the way around using a # (0.6cm) seam allowance. Remember to leave the turn through gap open (unstitched). Note: if you have used directional fabric for your pocket, make sure your turn through gap is along the bottom edge. 9. Trim all four corners of your pocket piece, cutting close to your stitching (be careful not to cut the stitches though!). 10. Turn your pocket out the right way and gently push each of the corners out so they sit nice and square. Tip: a blunt pencil works well to help push the corners out from the inside. 11. Roll the sides of your pocket out and press. At the turn through gap, fold both edges in # (0.6cm) and press. Top stitch along the top edge of your pocket (the other long side, opposite to your turn through gap) using a 1/8 (0.3cm) seam allowance. turn through gap is open along bottomtop stitch along top edge of pocket only Creat i ngYourInnerSl i pPocket Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 7 12. Take your two body lining pieces and place them one on top of the other as shown. Make sure all sides are lined up perfectly with each other and if your fabric is directional, that they are orientated around the right way. 13. Cut squares out of the bottom corners only of both pieces as follows !Small: cut 1! x 1! (3.8cm x 3.8cm) squares !Large: cut 1" x 1" (4.4cm x 4.4cm) squares 14. Take your slip pocket and one of your body lining pieces and lay out on your work surface as shown. Make sure your lining piece is orientated the right way with the cut out corners at the bottom. Place your slip pocket on top of your lining and center it horizontally across the fabric. The top edge of your slip pocket should sit as follows !Small: 2! (6.4cm) down from the top raw edge of your lining piece !Large: 3 (7.6cm) down from the top raw edge of your lining piece Note: the side of your slip pocket that has the interfacing fused to it is the front or outside of your pocket. The side that does not have interfacing fused to it is the inside of the pocket and should be right sides together with your lining piece. 15. Pin your pocket in place and topstitch to secure using a 1/8 (0.3cm) seam allowance as follows !Down the right hand side of the pocket (1) !Along the bottom of the pocket (2) !Up the left hand side of the pocket to finish (3) Set both lining pieces aside for now. e.g. cut 1! squares out of the bottom corners for the smal lsize measure down from top raw edge of your lining piece slip pocket should be centered horizontally on lining piece startfinish (1) (2)(2) (3) Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 8 16. Take your flap lining piece (the piece that does NOT have interfacing fused to it in this case, the denim piece) and on the wrong side, make a placement mark that is centered horizontally and 1! up from the bottom raw edge (for both sizes). 17. Repeat the above step to make the same mark on the right side of your flap lining piece. Instead of re-measuring, I prefer to poke a pin through from the wrong side of the fabric and make a mark where the pin comes out. " 18. Fuse one of your pieces of stabilizer over top of your mark (on the wrong side of your fabric), centering it as best you can. 19. Take one half of your magnetic snap (the male half the other half is the female half) and lay it down just above your placement mark as shown. Draw two lines either side of your placement mark, directly below each of the prongs this is where you will insert the prongs for this half of the magnetic snap. 20. Using your seam ripper, make small cuts along the two lines youve just drawn. Be careful not to cut your slits too big the prongs of the magnetic snap should fit snugly through the slits. Push the prongs of the magnetic snap through the slits so the circular part of the magnetic snap is on the right side (outside) of your fabric, and the prongs are on the wrong side. 1! up from bottom edge Creat i ngYourFl ap Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 9 21. Thread the fastener onto the prongs and fold the prongs to each side to secure this half of your magnetic snap. 22. Lay your flap lining piece (with magnetic snap attached) down on your work surface, right side up. Place your flap outer piece over top of the lining piece, matching right sides together. Pin in place and stitch around the outer edge of the flap using a ! (1.3cm) seam allowance, leaving the straight edge across the top open. 23. Clip the corners of your flap and turn it right side out. Roll the seams out and press well. 24. Baste the top edge of your flap closed using a # (0.6cm) seam allowance. Topstitch twice around the outer edge of your flap (excluding the top edge) using a 1/8 (0.3cm) and then # (0.6cm) seam allowance. Set your flap aside for now. baste along top edgetopstitch twice around outer edge of flapGood-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 10 25. Take your two outer body pieces and place them one on top of the other. Take one of your outer pieces and on the wrong side, draw a placement mark that is centered horizontally and down from the top raw edge as follows !Small: 5 (13cm) down from top edge !Large: 7 (18cm) down from top edge 27. Repeat the above step to make the same mark on the right side of your outer piece. 28. Fuse your remaining piece of stabilizer over top of your mark (on the wrong side of your fabric), centering it as best you can. 29. Take the remaining half of your magnetic snap (the female half) and lay it down just above your placement mark as shown. Thread the fastener onto the prongs and fold the prongs to each side to secure the second half of your magnetic snap. Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 12 33. Take your two outer body pieces and match up, right sides together. Also match you lining pieces together as shown. 34. Pin the bottom and side seams of both your outer and lining. Stitch the outer seams using a ! (1.3cm) seam allowance. Stitch the lining seams using a 5/8 (1.6cm) seam allowance. Reinforce well at the beginning and end of your seams. 35. Press all seams open. For the bottom seam, I find it easiest to wrap the outer/lining over the end of my ironing board so I can get my iron right in there to ensure the entire length of the seam is pressed open. 36. Take your outer and, holding it along the top front and back edges, pull the two panels away from each other so the side seams come together to meet in the middle as shown. pull front and back panels away from each other so side seams meet Creat i ngYourBagOut er&Li ni ng Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 13 37. Fold the top of your outer over so it is out of the way for now. Take one of your bottom corners and match up the side and bottom seams as accurately as possible. Tip: to ensure the seams are matched up perfectly, poke a pin through one of the seams (right where the two fabrics are joined with stitching) and look to see if the pin comes out through the seam on the other side. If not, re-adjust until the pin glides through both seams easily. 38. Pin both bottom corners of your outer and stitch using a ! (1.3cm) seam allowance. 39. Repeat steps 36 38 for the bottom corners of your lining using a ! (1.3cm) seam allowance also. Trim all bottom corners (outer and lining) to # (0.6cm). 40. Turn your outer the right way out. Roll the bottom corners out and press well to set (leave your lining the wrong way out). Set your lining aside for now. match side and bottom seams check accuracy with pin Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 14 41. Take your outer and pull the front and back panels away from each other so the side seams come together to meet in the middle. Match the side seams together and fold the back panel (the panel without the magnetic snap) out and in half to find the middle. Mark this fold with a pin. 42. Take your flap and fold it in half, matching side seam to side seam with right rides together. Mark the top of the flap at the fold with a pin. 43. Lay your outer down on your work surface, with the back panel (side opposite to magnetic snap) and pinned center facing up. Place your flap down on top of the back panel, so the outer or right side of the flap is right sides together with the outer side of the back panel. Match the two pins together and pin as one to secure. 44. Pin the rest of the flap to the back panel, matching raw edges together. Baste together using a # (0.6cm) seam allowance. check you have marked the back panel the panel opposite to the magnetic snap mark center of back panel with pin match side seams together fold at top of flap At t achi ngTheFl ap&St rap Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 15 45. Check you have attached the flap correctly by folding it up and over the bag as if you were closing your messenger bag. The two halves of the magnetic snap should meet and the outer side of the flap should be showing. 46. Fold your flap back over to the back panel (open your bag). Take your strap and position it above your outer as shown, with one end of your strap lined up and ready to attach to the first side seam of your outer. 47. Pivot your strap out and around to the side of your outer, so the right side of your strap is now right sides together with the right side of your outer. Match the strap to the outer by matching up the middle row of topstitching on the strap to the side seam of your outer. 48. Pin in place and baste to secure using a # (0.6cm) seam allowance. Note: for a tidier finish, try to ensure the side seam stays nice and flat when attaching your strap. 49. Take the rest of your strap and fold it under your outer and around to the other side seam, ensuring your strap stays nice and flat and doesnt twist or fold over. Repeat steps 47 48 to attach the other end of your strap. match middle row of topstitching to side seam side seam is nice and flat Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 16 50. Along the front top edge of the lining panel (the panel that does not have your slip pocket attached), mark a turn through gap as follows !Small: 4! (11cm) !Large: 6 (15cm) 51. Repeat step 41 to fold the front and back panels in half to find the center of each. Mark each fold with a pin. Repeat for your outer as well. 52. Fold your strap up onto one of the outer panels as shown below. Take your outer and feed it into your lining. Your outer should be the right way out, your lining should be inside out, and the back of your lining (where your pocket is attached) should be right sides together with the flap/back of your outer. You may need to squish your outer up to make it fit within the lining. This is correct and dont worry once your bag is finished and youve given it a good press, its shape will return to normal. center of front and back panels marked with pins At t achi ngTheLi ni ng Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 17 53. Pin the lining to the outer by first matching up the side seams and the pins you have placed in the center of the front and back panels, matching raw edges together. Continue pinning to fill in the gaps. You may need to stretch the lining slightly to fit the outer this is correct and helps the lining to sit nicely once turned to the inside. Tip: I like to double pin at the beginning and end of my turn through gap so I dont accidentally sew it closed! " 54. Stitch all the way around the top edge to join your lining to your outer using a ! (1.3cm) seam allowance. Remember to leave your turn through gap open. 55. Turn your bag right way out by first gently pulling your strap through your turn through gap. Then pull the flap through, followed by the remainder of the bag. 56. Push the lining down inside your outer and admire your handy work so far! Youre almost finished just a few simple steps to go! Good-To-Go Messenger Bag Page 18 57. Roll/fold the top seam out and press to set in place, tucking the lining nicely down into your bag. At the turn through gap, fold both the outer and lining in ! (1.3cm) and press. 58. Topstitch twice around the top edge of your bag using a 1/8 (0.3cm) and then # (0.6cm) seam allowance. 59. Give your bag a final press if needed, load it up and youre good to go!
