French St. Martin Protects home turf with victory over

Bermuda

Marigot, French St. Martin, August 31st

, 2012 –

French St. Martin defended their home turf well as

they defeated Bermuda in straight sets (25-23,25-23

and 27 -25) in match number one of FIVB Men’s World

Championship Qualification Tournament NORCECA

Group D

The games were really close as St. Maarten trailed at

many points during the sets and made it a habit to

come from behind to win.

Julien Sponsper was the game’s highest scorer as he ended the game with the most points (21)

which included 15 spikes during the St. Martin attack. For the losers Jason Ebbin led with 7 points.

Coach Bucci of Bermuda was not very disappointed at the loss. “I know we lost in three but we

anticipated this somewhat because of the inexperience of our team. So although we built leads at

crucial times in the games the players are not accustomed to doing what is required to win the next

point to remain in front,” he surmised.

Captain Ian Bucci was not a happy man as he was on court several times when his team leads

evapourated. “It was very frustrating out there, especially when the game seemed to be going to

plan then the leads disappear and you find yourself trailing,” he complained.

Coach Lizen of St. Martin was satisfied with the victory. “I wasn’t perturbed when we were trailing I

kept telling them that the game really begins at 18. There is no point in building early leads then

lose,” he reasoned.

Paul Quellery, the captain, was very happy with the win. “All that matters is getting to 25 first and I

am glad that we kept our composure at crucial times particularly in the third game when they almost

forced a fourth set,” he said.

St. Martin next plays Antigua/Barbuda while Bermuda clashes with St. Maarten in their second

game.

Antigua /Barbuda dismisses Dutch St. Maarten


, 2012 – Antigua/

Barbuda confidently put away Dutch St. Maarten 3-0 (25-

21,28- 26 and 25 -15) in match number two of FIVB Men’s

World Championship Qualification Tournament NORCECA

Group D.

It was only in the second set where they found themselves

in trouble trailing by as many as 8 points. At one point

Dutch St. Maarten got to 23 with Antigua Barbuda on 17.

They then rallied with an all round game to take the set 28-

26.

Collin Thomas led all scorers with 15 points made up of 13 spikes and 2 service winners

while Leonardo Jeffers poured in 13 points in a losing cause.

“It was a good win but not necessarily a good performance,” said Coach Fitzroy Benjamin of

Antigua/ Barbuda. “We only executed about 10 % of what we are capable of. We found

ourselves struggling to execute what was planned and so the game did not flow in a manner

that we wanted it to. This was probably due to a bit of nerves and some sluggish movement

but we will get that sorted out before the next game,” he reported.

For Dutch St. Maarten it was heartbreaking loss especially when they gave a good account

of themselves in set #1 and was very close to winning in set # 2.

Coach Raymond Jacobs of Dutch St. Maarten gave his account. “We got them where we

wanted them and at that point did not capitalize and did not finish plain and simple as that.

Apart from that I am somewhat pleased with the effort with the exception of the third set

where it seems the guys simply laid back. However I have taken away a lot of positives from

this loss,” he said.

Antigua/Barbuda next plays French St. Martin while Dutch St. Maarten tangles with

Anguilla.

Anguilla adds to Dutch St. Maarten woes with a come

from behind victory


, 2012 –

Anguilla turned the tables on Dutch St. Maarten and

took victory in four sets (18 – 25, 25-23, 25-17 and 25

-21) to condemn their opponents to the second

straight defeat of the day. In match number three of

brushed aside their neighbours quite easily in the

first set. Anguilla made the necessary adjustments and created some distance between

them and their rivals for the next three sets.

At the end of the game coach Raymond Jacobs of Dutch St. Maarten was at a loss for

words. “I am at baffled as to what happened on the court tonight. All I can say is that things

did not turn out the way we planned. It is difficult to explain because this is a team that we

are usually on par with and for them to defeat us like that I don’t know”, he said. Captain

Leonardo Jeffers tried to help his coach explain. “I think that we lost focus especially after

game 1 and though we tried we just could not get it back”, he added.

On the other hand, Coach Jason Liburd of Anguilla expressed satisfaction. “I am happy but

not ecstatic because we gave up a set in the process and this could hurt in the points system

at the end,” he said. “Notwithstanding that, considering that it was our first game I think we

gave a sterling effort,” he reported.

Captain Ian Connor was beaming with all smiles. “I was confident throughout but my

additional job was to constantly talk to the younger players to help them get rid of the

jitters and get a solid game from them and we did,” he concluded.

Anguilla’s next opponent is Antigua/Barbuda while Dutch St. Maarten will be desperate for

victory when they meet Bermuda next.

Antigua/Barbuda makes it two straight as French St.

Martin falls

Antigua and Barbuda marched on to victory over

French St. Martin but this time they dropped a set

(25-16, 21-25, 25-17and 25-16) in match number

four of FIVB Men’s World Championship

Qualification Tournament NORCECA Group D.

Rotilio Richardson of French St. Martin was

impressive with 17 spikes but Collin Thomas of

Antigua was better as he had 17 spike and 3 service winners.

Coach Jean Luc of French St. Martin conceded that Antigua Barbuda was the better team on

the night. “Antigua/Barbuda is a moving team they defend well and tonight all our

departments were just a level below theirs,” he admitted. “We changed the tactics in set #2

and gained a victory but Antigua/Barbuda readjusted in set #3 and we could not find a

solution to their changes,” he admitted. “The match gave us good motivation going forward

and now we are looking forward to second place as we are improving from match to

match,” he beamed.

Fitzroy Benjamin - Coach of the Antigua/Barbuda pointed to the improvements in his team

as the reason for victory. “We have moved from about 10% to about 75 % execution with

room for improvement but once we execute that well we are confident of victory,” he

noted. “In the second set we tried to introduce some new players in relatively new positions

but by the time we changed it was too late. We readjusted in set # 3 and everything

continued in our favour,” he reflected.

Antigua Barbuda leads the group after day 1 with 9 points while French St. Martin is in

second place with 6 points. Anguilla is in third with 4 points while Dutch St. Maarten (1) and

Bermuda (0) bring up the rear.
