Thomas Tooke and the monetary thought of
classical economics.
London: Routledge, 2011; 300 p.
Materia: Tooke, Thomas, 1774-1858; Economistas;
Escuela clásica de economía; Moneda; Precios
ISBN 9780415583930
This study provides a comprehensive account and
reconsideration of the contribution to political economy
of Thomas Tooke (1774-1858). It clarifies Tooke’s
monetary thought and its legacy to modern economics.
The study shows Tooke possessed a rich and extensive
political economy, covering many aspects of economic
activity relevant to key policy issues. Tooke’s political
economy is shown to be a unified and coherent body of
intellectual thought in the classical tradition which, like
most of his nineteenth-century contemporaries, was
much influenced by Adam Smith’s economics. More
particularly, Tooke’s monetary thought, especially his
novel banking school theory, is shown to be
theoretically coherent from the standpoint of
nineteenth-century classical economics. It is also
shown that besides contributing toward a better
understanding of the behaviour of monetary systems
in general, key elements of Tooke’s banking school
theory make an important contribution to explaining
distribution, growth and price inflation in modern
economics.

Boyce, David (ed.)
Cultural economics and theory: the evolutionary
economics of David Hamilton.
London: Routledge, 2010; 248 p.
Materia: Hamilton, David Boyce; Economía evolutiva;
Economía institucional
ISBN 9780415490917
David Hamilton is a leader in the American
institutionalist school of heterodox economics that
emerged after WWII. This volume includes 25 articles
written by Hamilton over a period of nearly half a
century. In these articles he examines the
philosophical foundations and practical problems of
economics. The result of this is a unique institutionalist
view of how economies evolve and how economics
itself has evolved with them. Hamilton applies insight
gained from his study of culture to send the message
that human actions situated in culture determine our
economic situation.
David Hamilton has advanced heterodox economics by
replacing intellectual concepts from orthodox
economics that hinder us with concepts that help us.
In particular, Hamilton has helped replace equilibrium
with evolution, make-believe with reality, ideological
distortion of government with practical use of
government, the economy as a product of natural law
with the economy as a product of human law and, last,
he has helped us replace the entrepreneur as a hero
with the entrepreneur as a real person.
These articles provide an alternative to the self-
adjusting market. They provide an explanation of how
the interaction of cultural patterns and technology
determine the evolutionary path of the economic
development of a nation. This is not a simple
materialist depiction of economic history as some
Marxists have advocated, instead Hamilton treats
technology and culture as endogenous forces,
embedded and inseparable from each other and
therefore, economic development. This volume will be
of most interest and value to professional economists
and graduate students who are looking for an in-depth
explanation of the origins and significance of
institutional economics.

Jevons, William Stanley, 1835-1882 autor.
The theory of political economy.
Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire: Palgrave
Macmillan, 2013; 339 p.
Materia: Economía; Economía matemática
ISBN: 9781137374141
Originally published in 1871, The Theory of Political
Economy was the first text to introduce the concept of
utility theory into economics and the use of calculus as
a way to simplify and present economic problems. In
this classic work Jevons re-formulated the central
problem of economics as one of how to maximize
overall utility with a set amount of means of
production. Utility expressed as a function became the
basis of the new theory of value which substantially
differs from the classical political economists' labour
theory of value. Drawing on his roots in the natural
sciences Jevons revolutionized the tools and methods
associated with political economy and kick-started the
metamorphosis of the discipline.

Re-thinking economics: exploring the work of
Pierre Bourdieu.
New York : Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2014;
p. 303
Materia: Bourdieu, Pierre, 1930-2002; Aspectos
sociológicos
ISBN: 9780415858922
Once again, unfettered capitalism has failed. Promises
for global prosperity and peace have given way to a
world of deep recession, social upheaval and political
instability. Once again, mainstream economics has
proved its inadequacy. Despite its technical rigour and
mathematical virtuosity, it failed dramatically to
respond to the current crisis. Why is this so?
Mainstream economics turns a blind eye to society. By
assumption, it maims its analyses by wiping away
what makes us what we are. There is pressing need for
a critical discussion and new ideas.
The book offers an innovative outlook and a unique
source for social scientists of all fields, particularly
economists and sociologists, who wish to engage in the
study of Bourdieu and his economics with a view to
developing a more pertinent theory.

The economic mind in America: essays in the
history of American economics.
New York : Routledge, 1998; p. 333
Materia: Economía; Estados Unidos; Historia;
Congresos
ISBN: 9780415756617 (rústica)
In the history of economic thought, American
economics is an area which has received insufficient
attention. This volume demonstrates the variety and
creativity of American economics and the links
between American economic thought and its particular
non-European context. The book consists of selected
papers from the 1996 History of Economics Society
conference.
The opening section examines the concept of
'American' economic thought from a variety of
perspectives. The following sections provide a critical
reassessment of pioneering American policy analysts
such as Irving Fisher, Wesley Mitchell, Harold Moulton
and Leo Paslovsky, as well as the theoretical
contributions of Herbert Davenport and Frank Knight.
The fourth section contains a detailed account of
Thorstein Veblen's institutional economics and an
exploration of the influence of Canadian and European
economic thought. The unusual and original
contributions of C. S. Peirce, Alvin Johnson and science
fiction author Robert A. Heinlein are also analyzed. The
final section details American economists' interests in
international issues from 1886-1995.

Economics and management of the food
industry.
New York : Routledge, 2013; p. 197
Materia: Industria alimentaria; Administración;
Competencia Económica; Estados Unidos
ISBN: 9780415539920 (rústica: papel alcalino)
This book analyzes the economics of the food industry
at every stage between the farm gate and the kitchen
counter.
Central to the text are agricultural marketing problems
such as the allocation of production between
competing products (such as fresh and frozen
markets), spatial competition, interregional trade,
optimal storage, and price discrimination.
Topics covered will be useful to students who expect to
have careers such as food processing management,
food sector buying or selling, restaurant management,
supermarket management, marketing/advertising, risk
management, and product development. The focus is
on real world-relevant skills and examples and on
intuition and economic understanding above
mathematical sophistication, although the text does
draw on the nuances of modern economic theory.

method and radical imagination.
Abingdon, Oxon ; New York : Routledge, 2012
Materia: Aspectos políticos; Economía; Socialismo
ISBN: 9780415619295 (papel alcalino)
This re-incorporation of economics into political
economy is one (small, but not insignificant) element
in a larger project: to place all of the resources of
present-day social-scientific research at the service of
increasing democracy, in an ultimate direction toward
socialism in the classic sense. An economics-enriched
political economy is, above all, empowering: working
people in general can calculate, build models, think
theoretically, and contribute to a human-worthy future,
rather than leaving all this to their "betters."

Routledge handbook of the history of global

New York: Routledge, 2014; p. 348
Materia: Historia económica
ISBN: 9780415508490 (encuadernado)
The Routledge Handbook of the History of Global
Economic Thought offers the first comprehensive
overview of the long-run history of economic thought
from a truly international perspective. Although
globalization has facilitated the spread of ideas
between nations, the history of economics has tended
to be studied either thematically (by topic), in terms of
different currents of thought, or individually (by
economist). Work has been published in the past on
the economic thought traditions of specific countries,
but this pioneering volume is unique in offering a wide-
ranging comparative account of the development of
economic ideas and philosophies on the international
stage.

Resisting economic globalization: critical theory

Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2013; p. 218
Materia: Inversiones extranjeras (Derecho

ISBN: 9781137004055 (rústica)
Resisting Economic Globalization explores the
magnitude of the legal constraints imposed by these
rules and institutions associated with the worldwide
spread of neoliberalism. Much contemporary theorizing
has given up on national states as a locus for
countering the harmful effects of economic
globalization. Though states provide critical supports to
the construction and ongoing maintenance of
transnational legal constraints, David Schneiderman
argues that states remain crucial sites for resisting,
even rolling back, investment law disciplines.
Structured as a series of encounters with selected
critical theorists, the book contrasts theoretical
diagnoses with recent episodes of resistance impeding
investment law edicts.

Structural change, competitiveness and
industrial policy: painful lessons from the
European periphery.
Abingdon, Oxon : Routledge, 2014; p. 330
Materia: Europa Meridional; Condiciones económicas;
Siglo XXI
ISBN: 9780415713825
This book undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the
causes of the crisis in southern European countries,
showing that the ‘Achilles heel’ of these economies is
rooted in the dismal evolution of productivity and in a
specialization pattern excessively based on the so-
called ‘traditional’, low, and low-medium tech
industries, which yield low margins, declining export
shares and, ultimately, withering international
competitiveness. Such evidence suggests that the
southern European periphery industrial growth model
has reached its limits, demanding a multidimensional
policy approach capable of overcoming the magnitude
and complexity of the present crisis.
Without denying the need to adjust public and private
balance sheets, it is argued that finding a sustainable
path out of the present problems requires addressing
the challenges of productivity growth and
competitiveness in the long term.

Macmillan, 2013; p. 192

ISBN: 9781137375308 (encuadernado en tela)
Today's competitive economic environment requires
companies to create integrated, forward-thinking
business strategies. Accounting plays a large part in
the creation of these strategies by establishing step-
by-step guidelines for achieving strategic objectives. In
short, international accounting standards and local
accounting standards play a major role in the success
rate of a company's overall accounting scheme.
International Accounting Harmonization analyzes the
differences between national accounting rules and
international accounting methods, showing that when
firms adopt international accounting standards they
achieve significantly higher positive coefficients
compared with firms that only take on local accounting
strategies.

The basic practice of statistics
New York : W. H. Freeman, 2013; p. 787
Materia: Estadística
ISBN: 9781464117664
The Basic Practice of Statistics (BPS) is designed to
give a working knowledge of the ideas and tools of
practical statistics. Through accessible language and
engaging examples and exercises based on real data,
BPS explains both the mechanics and the concepts
needed for statistical work. The Sixth Edition maintains
the textbook's focus on statistical reasoning and real-
life situations and data, while updating the
organization, exercises and examples to better reflect
the needs and experiences of today's student. Here are
a few highlights of the revised Sixth Edition: Updated
Exercises and Examples: More than 20 percent of all
examples and exercises have been revised or updated.
Contemporary situations and up-to-date data cover a
number of fields, including environmental studies,
agriculture, business and finance, technology, biology,
psychology, health and medicine, education, sports,
and entertainment. New examples and exercises draw
on topics such as texting while driving, CO2 emissions,
the Gulf oil spill, and how weather influences tipping.
Each chapter also features a new set of 'Exploring the
Web' exercises that encourage readers to go online to
analyze data, investigate statistical issues, and learn
about new applications of statistics. Improved
coverage: In addition to updates and improvements to
coverage throughout the text, the topic of inference
has been expanded to include separate chapters on
confidence intervals (Chapter 14), tests of significance
(Chapter 15), and inference in practice (Chapter 16).
The revised format allows students to focus on the
basics of each procedure separately before discussing
cautions about the use of both in practice. Helpful
navigation: Chapter summaries now consist of two
sections: The first section, 'Chapter Specifics,'
summarizes the material presented in the chapter. The
second section, 'Link It,' relates the chapter content to
material in previous and upcoming chapters. Together,
'Chapter Specifics' and 'Link It' show how individual
chapters relate to one another and to the overall
practice of statistics.

The financial world has undergone a fundamental
transformation. The crisis of 2007-2008, which was so
devastating in its reach and consequences has
transformed many aspects of the markets and has
altered conventional wisdom regarding prudent risk
management. Much has rightly been written on the
crisis and the 'lessons learned'; many 'post mortems'
have been performed on failed and rescued
institutions; new regulatory edicts and rules have been
drafted and put into action, and new techniques of
risk-taking and risk management have emerged. But
perhaps most importantly, the financial crisis
demonstrated that liquidity is the most vital
component of a properly functioning financial system –
it is the essential lifeblood of banks and other financial
institutions, and, by direct extension, the essential
lifeblood of all other parts of the corporate and
governmental world.

The recent financial crisis has had a devastating impact
around the globe. Thousands of businesses have
closed, millions of jobs have been cut and many people
have lost their homes. Capital and the Debt Trap
explains how key economies have fallen into a 'debt
trap', linking the financial sphere to the real economy,
and looks into alternatives to the constant stream of
financial bubbles and shocks. Overlooked by many,
cooperatives across the world have been relatively
resilient throughout the crisis. Through four case
studies, this book explores their strategies, providing
an in-depth analysis within a broader debate on wealth
generation and a sustainable future. To all those
interested in political economy, enterprise governance,
development studies and cooperatives, Capital and the
Debt Trap opens up new ways of thinking.
