Unlocking the potential of oil palm Empty Fruit
Bunches (“EFB”) pellets as a sustainable fuel
source for Malaysia will bring Malaysia closer
to achieving its RE and climate change
commitments, both locally and internationally.
Malaysia’s oil palm industry processed 97 mil
tonnes of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) in 2018,
producing up 20 mil tonnes of EFB. An
underutilized resource, EFB is Malaysia’s
answer to sustainable fuel. Traditionally a
difficult to handle fuel, technology
advancements show there is promise in EFB
Pellets being a compatible fuel for co-firing in
power generation plants. This potential,
coupled with solutions to address the
challenges around EFB Pelleting and power
generation may be the key to Malaysia
achieving its RE targets.
