Toolbox of the trainer :the art to stimulate the discussion
Programme intensif, LLN, mars 2010.
Plan de l’exposéPlan(Shot) of the presentation1. Art d’animer / art to train (Dewez)2. Art d’animer philosophiquement / Art to
lead philosophically Lipman Tozzi Dewez Gagnon - Heirriger …
Il n’intervient donc pas sur « le fond », sur le « contenu »…A mark: the objective is that the children think by themselves, it is a question of being in a spirit
of search(research) with the children. The trainer has no answers, he has to allow the
children to deepen(fathom) their own reflection. He(it) does not thus intervene on " the bottom ",
on the "contents"
donner son appréciation morale The most frequent trap is the temptation to
give its moral appreciation
Remark: if a child holds comments which go against a universalist ethics
Art d’animer / art to train (Dewez)Ce n’est pas le « lieu » de lui dire qu’il a raison ou
tort ni de lui rappeler les principes moraux d’accueil, de respect de chacun It is not the "place" to say to pupil that he is right or wrong, or to remind him the moral principles of
welcome, respect for each
The trainer must be able to "bounce" on this kind(genre) of assertion: for example, by inviting the other children to say if they agree or not and
why?; by inviting the child to think about his(her) own assertion
- The difficulty for the trainer will be to remain "a professional" by staying within the
limits of the orders which he gave but by inviting the child (without "judging" him nor
"moralizing") to question his own assertion. It is work of tightrope walker!
Art d’animer / art to train (Dewez)Deux rappels importants
Two important reminders(abseilings) Never "force" a child to speak but to
invite without pressing … The trainer guarantees the respect for
the frame of the discussion
Art d’animer / art to train (Dewez)- L’art du questionnement / The art of
the questioning Pour inviter l’enfant à préciser sa pensée
To invite the child to specify his(her) thoughtThe "reflection": send back(dismiss) to the child the "exact"
words which he has just pronouncedThe reformulation: criticize in other words and ask if I
understood wellThe hypothesis to clarify
Ask the others to say what they understood(included) and to verify with the child that it is a good reformulation
expriment « non-verbalement »Invite the children to say in words what they
« conceptualiser »Invite the children to define a word, "to
conceptualize“
Ask to the children to illustrate their comments by examples
Invite in the debate of ideas and in the argumentation
When a child presents his opinion(notice) as an evidence, a certainty, to question him
Invite to argue: for what reasons do you say it? Invite to imagine the consequences of an assertion
Ask the others if they agree Revealing of the divergent opinions(notices), the contradictions
or the " conflicts sociocognitifs " which appear
