Dear Friends, I am so excited to be in Boise! I knew right away that the orchestra and I were going to have a great time making music together, but once we performed for you it sealed the deal! Your warmth and affection for the musicians of the Philharmonic was full and inviting. I look forward to getting to know you and to many years of musical adventures together. For me, an orchestra is a vital part of the community. We are a place not only to hear great music, but a place to celebrate our community, to discuss the challenges we face today and to continuously work towards a more positive future and empower our children through music education. We begin our journey together with a season that has a taste of what’s to come. This year you will hear great soloists, meet interesting composers, view a mix of mediums and in the end celebrate the human experience through music. You have inspired me, and I have lots of thoughts and ideas for the future, but there will be plenty of time for those. Right now, I look forward to getting to know the Treasure Valley community and developing relationships that will last a lifetime. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your community. Sincerely,

Robert Franz, Music Director

Opening NightRobert Franz, conductorRachel Barton Pine, violin

John Corigliano, Gazebo DancesPytor Il’yich Tchaikovsky, Violin ConcertoAntonin Dvorák, Symphony No. 6

Robert Franz makes his debut as Conductor and Music Director, opening the 47th concert season and a new era for the Boise Philharmonic. Maestro Franz balances the fun of the familiar with the joy of discovery in these overshadowed gems by American composer John Corigliano and Antonin Dvorák. Ten years ago, the young Rachel Barton strode onto the Philharmonic stage and directly into the hearts of the audience, thus a Philharmonic “old friend” greets our new conductor with probably the most popular concerto for violin, the Tchaikovsky.

Ludwig van Beethoven Coriolan Overture

Piano Concerto No. 3Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale”

Of the many moods of Beethoven, the joyful and serenely beautiful are presented tonight, partially in the hands of the exuberant Alpin Hong, who so captivated our audience last year that his immediate return was insisted. Something similar happened for Robert Franz

at the conclusion of his Beethoven performance last January, so the two performers’ return will likely have you agreeing that Beethoven

is the greatest composer who ever lived.

Shulamit Ran, Vessels of Courage and HopeGustav Mahler, Symphony No. 5

While taken from the title of Ms. Ran’s piece (sponsored to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel), the concept of courage and hope applies equally to Mahler’s mighty and majestic 5th Symphony. Written nearly a century apart (1903 and 1998), one a tone poem and the other stretching the symphonic form to its limits, both works evoke starkly those situations when we must employ courage to take action, such as in the search for a place to live and work in peace and prosperity.

Richard Einhorn, Voices of LightSilent Film, The Passion of Joan of Arc

With its stunning camera work and striking compositions, Danish director Carl Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc convinced viewers in 1928 that

movies could be art. Like its subject, the film itself was destroyed by fire. Perhaps further like its subject, the film was miraculously reborn

when a copy was accidentally discovered in 1981. American composer Richard Einhorn found the work so compelling he composed Voices of Light. Based on texts of female medieval mystics and using medieval modes, this haunting and dramatic work is a powerful journey in sight

and sound to when the world was illuminated only by fire.

Arnold Schoenberg, Verklärte NachtWolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Violin Concerto No. 4Franz Schubert, Symphony No. 6

Vienna can be considered to be the cradle of Western art music. Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert lived there, as well as the founders of musical modernism, of which Arnold Schoenberg was the leading exponent. Guest conductor Karen Lynne Deal, a nationally recognized advocate for music, explores the evolution of music from Mozart to the doorstep of modernism. Ju-Young Baek is another Philharmonic favorite, returning with her supreme artistry for her fourth appearance in seven seasons.

Jean Sibelius, Symphony No. 5

With this presentation of the greatest composers of Scandinavia, Maestro Robert Franz begins a new tradition in education as the seniors of the Treasure Valley Youth Symphony perform the Helios Overture with the Boise Philharmonic. An accomplished young pianist, Roberto Plano, performs the beloved concerto by

Grieg, and Maestro Franz concludes his first year leading the Philharmonic with the grandeur of the Sibelius 5th, one of the last symphonies to be written in the

Romantic tradition.

Juan Arriaga, Overture to Los Esclavos Felices Jesus Guridi, Ten Basque Melodies Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Capriccio Espagñol Joaquin Rodrigo, Concierto de Aranjuez Manuel de Falla, Suite from The Three Cornered Hat

Idaho is known for its Basque heritage, so this concert pays tribute with guest conductor José Luis Egiluz, a resident of Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque country, and frequent conductor of its symphony orchestra. Maestro Egiluz has visited Boise’s Basque community, having helped to form the Biotzetik Basque Choir. We welcome these authentic performances of music by Basque composers, as well as the well known favorites of Spanish passion, color and spice, Capriccio Espagñol, Three Cornered Hat, and Concierto de Aranjuez. This popular concerto for guitar and orchestra, performed by Jason Vieaux, may be the first performance of this piece by the Boise Philharmonic.
