Sisterdale is well known for its origins - a free-thinking Latin Colony that rose up along the Pinta Trail (Camino Pinta) at the crossing of the Guadalupe River. Sunday, June 8th is the 170th anniversary date of renowned Texas Ranger Jack Hays’ game-changing 1844 Battle of Walker’s Creek and the Kendall County Historical Commission (KCHC) is planning a special all-day gathering within miles of the site of the engagement that highlights this unique moment in time. KCHC’s commemoration of the Battle of Walker’s Creek will tie together the connections between the bankrupt Revolving Firearms inventor Samuel Colt, the Republic of Texas Navy, Comanches, a contingent of outmanned but not outgunned Texas Rangers and a savvy Ranger leader with the heart of-a-lion. At the iconic Sisterdale Dance Hall, national, regional and local authors and experts including Ranger chron-icler Mike Cox, and Empire of the Summer Moon’ author, S. C. Gwynne, will come together to explain what made this Comanche engagement a watershed event by developing its backdrop, story and epilogue; detailing the far-reaching ramifications of this seminal Native-American/Ranger encounter, the Battle of Walker’s Creek.

The GVTC Foundation Charitable Golf Classic is set to tee off once again at the beautiful Resort at Tapatio Springs. This year marks the 10th year for the golf fund-raiser that benefits The GVTC Foundation. More than 140 golf-ers from around the country will travel to the Boerne area to par-ticipate in the event. Many of the partici-pants are vendors of GVTC who’ve been supporting the Golf Classic for many years. Last year’s the tour-nament raised a record $110,000

The Foundation uses the

money to help nonprofit organi-zations all across GVTC’s ser-vice area. In 2013, the Foundation donated over $243,000 to 82

charitable groups. In Kendall County $58,800 was given to help 22 organizations serving the area. The GVTC Foundation focuses its giving to health and human ser-vices, Youth services, education, volunteer emergency services and cultural activities.

The Boerne Education Foundation has announced that its annual Rock On gala netted just over $192,000 to support classroom projects and teacher initiatives in Boerne ISD schools.

“We want to thank our sponsors, our donors and everyone who had a part in making Rock On a success once again this year,” said BEF vice president Sharon von Rosenberg. “The support of this community should leave no doubt that education is a top priority here and that all of us are willing to go the extra mile to assure our students and teachers have access to education’s latest tools.”

Already this year, BEF has made contributions to the district totaling $256,000 from previous fund raising initiatives. The lat-est contribution was a $70,000 district grant in March to support ongoing staff development focused on integrating technology into classrooms. The grant also supported purchase of graphing cal-culators that are needed by students in 8th grade STAAR testing.

“The combined revenues from Rock On and the BEF annual campaign,” said von Rosenberg, “should place BEF in a great position to contribute generously to BISD for the upcoming school year.” The foundation raised more than $50,000 in its inaugural annual campaign last fall.

The mission of BEF is to provide opportunities for excellence in education, promote innovation in teaching, and partner with the community to enhance the quality of education in collaboration and alignment with Boerne Independent School District.

In many areas of your life, you’re probably aware that it’s useful to keep emotions out of your decision-making — and that’s cer-tainly the case with investing. However, it can be difficult to keep your feelings from influencing your investment decisions. But you may find it easier to invest with your head, rather than your heart, if you know a little something about two different cycles: the market cycle and your emotional cycle.

Let’s start with the market cycle. If you’ve been investing for a while, you’re aware (probably highly aware) that the financial markets are rarely static — they are always moving up and down, at least in the short term. (Over the very long term, a period of many decades, the markets have trended up.) But these short-term move-ments, while perhaps appearing as “zigs” and “zags” on a daily basis, actually form a pattern, or a cycle, that can last for months or years. These cycles are known as bull (up) or bear (down) markets. Going back to the Great Depression, the average bear mar-ket has lasted 21 months, while the average bull market has extended for 57 months, according to research from Standard and Poor’s Index Services.

These market cycles greatly influence investors’ attitudes and behavior. In fact, they lead to the formation of investors’ emo-tional cycles. During bull markets, investors tend to feel optimism, excitement and even euphoria. But once a bull market ends and a bear market begins, investors start getting nervous. And the longer and deeper the bear market, the greater the depth of emotion felt by investors. These emotions can begin as anxiety and then progress to denial, fear, desperation and panic.

Free Yourself from the Cycle of

Emotional Investing

Furthermore, market cycles and emotional cycles don’t really align. For example, investors may well experience euphoria when the market has reached its high point and a bear market has just begun. For a while, then, these inves-tors, fueled by their euphoric feelings over the big gains they’ve achieved, may continue pouring money into the market, even as it’s declining. This type of behavior, though, is probably better suited for when the market is already at a low, when investors’ dollars will buy more shares. Conversely, investors may reach the peak of their fearful-ness at the end of a bear market, just when things are about to turn around. At this point, their fear may hold them back from investing — even though, with prices low, it can be a good time to invest. Clearly, basing investment decisions on emotions can lead to poor choices.

So don’t get caught up in this pattern. Instead, strive to follow a disciplined approach to investing. Build an investment portfolio that reflects your objectives, risk tolerance and time horizon, and seek to hold appropriate investments for the long term. Of course, you may well need to make adjustments along the way, but do it for the right reasons — such as a change in your goals or in the invest-ments themselves — rather than as a reaction to the current market cycle.

Our emotions are powerful, and their power can increase when applied to such a meaningful aspect of our life as our finances. But if you can detach yourself, as much as possible, from the emotional cycle of investing, you can avoid considerable angst — while helping clear the path to pursue your goals. BBM

attend and are able to really get a good feel for the program.

The current board for Boerne LeaderSteps consists of Jim Davis, Dixie Van Eynde, Don Van Eynde, Jane Bujnoch, Reid Cain, Susan Naiser, Reagan Pugh, Greg Rickert, Susan Shipp, Angela Sprowl, and Sandra Tibbs. The program doesn’t cost the students anything to attend and is fund-ed by donations from local businesses and individuals who believe in the benefit of developing Boerne’s future leaders. Each year LeaderSteps Boerne requires approximately $7500 to operate which goes to fund charter busses for transportation, room and facility rentals at universities and coun-try clubs, meals, printing and materials, honorariums and travel expenses for speakers. “We are so thankful for the businesses and individuals whose gen-erosity allows us to keep the program running and we are always looking for additional people or businesses that would like to get involved. I really do feel that I get as blessed as the kids do! It’s a fantastic and rewarding program to be a part of,” Davis added.

LeaderSteps Boerne is a leadership development and career readiness program for Boerne High School and Champion High School seniors. “Started 12 years ago by Mike Schultz and Danny Buck, the goal of LeaderSteps Boerne was to enhance the leadership skills of the high school seniors in our community and prepare them for what’s to come as they go on to college and the workplace,” said Jim Davis, president of the Boerne LeaderSteps board. “I got involved with Boerne LeaderSteps after my son completed the program. I was so impressed I knew I just had to be a part of it.”

To be considered for the program, students must fill out an application. Every high school junior at both Boerne High School and Champion High School are given an application and encouraged to apply. According to Davis, “Student applications are evaluated based on many things, but it is important that they have already demonstrated some leadership skills along with volunteer efforts. Much emphasis is placed on the essay they are asked to complete in which we ask them to express how they believe being a part of LeaderSteps will benefit them in the future.”

Currently, 50 students are chosen to take part in the program each year. The Boerne LeaderSteps program consists of four, all-day sessions throughout the school year, which take place in September, November, January and March.

During the first session the students are taken to a local university where the focus is on college and planning. “What type of school would be a good fit, what to expect when you get to college, these types of topics are what we focus on during our first session. They get to hear the real story from our guest speakers,” Davis stated.

The second session is at a corporate environment. Davis added, “We’ve taken students to the Toyota Plant, Valero and Rackspace to name a few. We try to give them an idea of what work-life will be like. During this session we also work on interviewing and public speaking skills, discuss business ethics and many more topics that will help them as they enter the workforce.”

Session three takes place at Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club where topics ranging from conflict resolution to how to recognize and reward and even the art of writing a “thank you” note are discussed. This session also covers financial planning and budgeting, dressing for success and an etiquette class where the students are instructed on how to have a business lunch.

The fourth and final session includes messages given by Boerne High School Principal, Natalie Farber, Champion High School Principal, Jodi Spoor, as well as the Superintendent of Boerne ISD, David Stelmazewski. According to Davis, “The real highlight of this session is that the students come up to the podium and share their top two take-aways from the Boerne LeaderSteps program. Once they are finished they must introduce the next student. This really puts into practice their public speaking skills as well as their ability to gather information on their subject.” During this session the parents of the students are invited to

TEXAS FAMILY FUN BACKYARD-INSPIRED BEER GARDEN BECOMES POPULAR COMMUNITY HANGOUT!

Co-owners Michael Stratis and Mary Kanafani have welcomed hundreds of visitors to this popular hangout since it was purchased exactly one year ago.

“We used to vacation in Arizona. During our time there we went to a lot of wineries. The places we went to were very laid back and really focused a lot on nature. It was an inviting atmosphere. People were welcoming and it was very lively. Michael and I knew that one day we would open a place with the same feel and vibe,” Kanafani said.

Located just off Upper Cibolo Creek Road and a short drive from Boerne Lake, Random spans across seven acres of wide-open space. Thursday through Sunday, the area is packed with hundreds of visitors. The property is speckled with decades-old trees and native foliage. Picnic tables, fire pits and lawn games create a fun, family-friendly environment for kids to run and play and friends to relax and unwind. In the mid-1800s, a German family once owned the property. All about taking something with a bit of history and giving it new life, Stratis and Kanafani repurposed the home’s garage into an open-air craft beer garden.



“We fell in love with the process of brewing beer. It has a different flavor and aroma from those you would buy in a grocery store,” Kanafani said. “There are more than 80 different beer varieties to choose from. And we still serve everything from wine and mimosas to sangrias and margaritas. There is something here for everyone.”

Popular food trucks from around town and several from San Antonio have made quite a name for themselves at Random.

“Every week we have a new truck here selling food. People love that it’s always changing. We like keeping it fresh and the anticipation of something new creates a lot of buzz,” Kanafani said.

Family favorites like chopped barbecue sandwiches and puffy tacos to more exotic feasts like blackened fish tacos and green curry wagyu burgers are just a few of the dishes you could find at Random.

Random has already been the host to several events in its short existence. To truly gage its success has been immeasurable, Kanafani says, but the number of rave reviews and likes found on Facebook says otherwise.

Boerne Youth Football and Cheer, or BYFA, is all about Boerne, Family and Football. Boerne has been growing at an amazing rate with 10 to 15% of new children joining the ranks every year. We are seeing new residents from all parts of the country. With that in mind, the Board of BYFA decided that it needed to take the next step in the expansion of Youth Football.

BYFA has joined Texas Select Youth Football, an organization under the umbrella of United Youth Football League and USA football.

United Youth Football is a national football league partnered with the NFL to foster the development of Youth Football across the nation. USA football is partnered with the NFL to help Coaches with education and safety techniques to ensure that children learn correct football in a safe environment.

BYFA is very excited about the upcoming football season and the introduction of the Boerne Bulls. This year they will see a 25% increase in tackle football enrollment. In addition they are expanding the Flag football program to include 10 to 12 years and will bring back Cheerleaders.

With a new name, new uniforms and the latest, safest equip-ment, 2014 will be a booming year for Boerne Youth Football.

With all this excitement BYFA wanted to host an event to welcome and introduce everyone to the program. On May 30th, 2014, BYFA will host its 1st Annual Fundraiser. It will be an eve-ning to celebrate Boerne and Football. Join them as they enjoy a taste of some of Boerne’s best food and people while listening to two hill country favorites: Cody Canada with the Departed and Charlie Robison.

The Bandera Electric Cooperative 2014 Cowboy Capital Stampede will go down in history as a success. On the morning of March 29, 2014, 117 cheery participants arrived at the Bandera City Park to walk or run in sup-port of their charity. BEC had a total of 148 registrants, with 30 of them being walk-up registrants Saturday morning.

This year, participants had the opportunity to select from a list of organizations in which to have their participation fee dedicated. After registration fees and outside donations were allocated, BEC was able to donate more $7,300 to area and national charities:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: ITS COMMON AND NOT ALWAYS CAUSED BY WHAT YOU THINK

Carpal tunnel syndrome affects thousands of Americans annually. It involves the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm, and becomes pressured at the wrist. This nerve controls sensation to all of the fingers with the exception of the small finger and importantly innervates the muscle at the base of the thumb. The prompt diagnosis and treatment of this disorder is important. First, we want to stop the numbness, tingling and pain that occurs in the fingers, wrist and forearm. Second, it is critical to prevent weakness from developing at the base of the thumb which can compromise hand grip.

Many patients with carpal tunnel will com-plain of numbness, tingling, itching or burn-ing in the palm of the hand and fingers. The symptoms often occur in one hand at a time but both hands are frequently affected. Many patients will complain of morning symptoms and it is thought this may occur due to flexion of the wrist during sleep. In some cases the only presenting symptom is decreased grip strength.

The generally held belief is that carpal tunnel is only due to repetitive action such as typing or work on assembly lines. While such repetitive hand work can certainly predispose a person to the development of carpal tunnel, there are numerous other factors that are now commonly associated with the development of the disorder. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be seen from cysts or tumors in the wrists, preg-nancy, pituitary hormone abnormalities, trauma with swelling, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and frequently osteoarthritis. I am seeing numerous patients in my office with diabetes or osteoarthritis who develop this disorder.

In the past, the only method of diagnosis was physical exam and could be unreliable in many situations. The Tinel’s test involved tap-ping over the median nerve to illicit paresthesias

and the Phalen’s test involved wrist flexion to determine if numbness or tingling occurs. Now, we fortunately have electrodiagnostic tests referred to as EMG/NCV for specifically identifying conduction abnormalities of the median nerve and determining their severity. For this test, small electrode sticky pads are applied to the hand with wires and a small electrical impulse is given to the nerve. This allows for detailed assessment of the median nerve’s conduction status. The EMG/NCV test is critical to avoid misdiagnosis of the symp-toms and unnecessary surgical procedures.

Treatments of carpal tunnel syndrome vary depending on the severity and duration of symptoms. While nonsteroidal anti-inflam-matory medicines, diuretics, vitamin B6 have been advocated, clinical evidence supports only a few treatments as effective for most patients. If wrist flexion or repetitive motion is contribut-ing to your syndrome, then adjustments in your hand position at work and postural changes, as recommended by your physical therapist or chiropractor, may be helpful. A randomized, pla-cebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Neurology has found that low dose prednisone over 2-4 weeks can resolve some mild cases of carpal tunnel. Additionally, carpal tunnel wrist splints, which prevent flexion of the wrist dur-ing sleep, frequently assist with symptom relief. For severe carpal tunnel, outpatient surgery may be indicated. Fortunately, newer techniques allow many patients to undergo an endoscopic procedure with limited to no down time.

So, the bottom line is that carpal tunnel syndrome is common but also extremely treat-able. Should you have frequent hand and finger numbness or decreased grip strength, prompt evaluation could lead to resolution of symptoms and prevention of permanent weakness.BBM

It’s interesting to note that if you are a professional over 50, the more you focus on the results you can bring to the table, the better. Holding onto that mindset will set the tone and pace of all your career-related conversations and interviews.

There have been multiple articles written and studies conducted about a very possible shortage in executive talent by 2018, due to mass retiring of Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964). For example, a 2010 study by Barry Bluestone and Mark Melnik from the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University estimated that by 2018 there could be more than five million unfilled jobs in the United States due to this reduction in workforce.

In my opinion, the actual increased need for expertise in a particular post or industry means that Baby Boomers should focus on their specialized areas of expertise, concentrate on what they can bring to the table, and highlight the mentoring they can provide to younger team members. Fortunately for most professionals with over 20 years of experience, identifying the areas where they shine and what they most love to do is usually very clear to them.

Here are some additional points you can apply to your professional or executive level resume that will help minimize any potential red flags and maximize your candidacy:

• Don’t go back more than 20 years in your experience unless you absolutely have to.• Don’t list dates you were in the military.• Don’t list dates you graduated from college.• Don’t list dates of every training course you have been through in the last 30 years.• Make sure the content you list in your resume is fresh and relevant.• Demonstrate you are current on trends, certifications, emerging technologies, and new management structures or generally new ways of doing business.• Realize that many credible sources have warned of a looming shortage in senior executives as Baby Boomers retire out of the market and Gen Y employees pose new and difficult challenges for companies.• Consider management consulting.Be SURE to keyword match your ideal job search using indeed.

For many seniors, the solution to ‘what if ’ can be found in a reverse mortgage.

A SENIOR PERSPECTIVE: Many seniors share similar ideals; work hard, provide for the family, retire with the resources to meet basic needs and leave a legacy to their family, often in the form of home equity. While a few have seen this American dream fulfilled, for most seniors, their efforts have been derailed by unexpected life events and the rising cost of living. These financial strains left many seniors worrying about “What if.” What if: I can no longer make my mortgage payment? The car breaks down? My health takes a turn? For many seniors, the answer to “what if” is a reverse mortgage. They have discovered that reverse mortgages are a safe and secure financial tool that can assist them in remaining in their home, free of monthly mortgage pay-ments (borrowers must remain current on property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and HOA dues), financially independent and with the peace of mind knowing they have the resources to pay for health care, home modifications or simply enjoy life a little more. Making the decision to obtain a reverse mortgage is often stressful. It is not uncom-mon for seniors to find it difficult to set aside the belief that the equity in their home is somehow off limits and to overcome feelings of fear or guilt about pursuing a reverse mortgageeven when it may be the best solution for meeting their financial needs.

WHAT IS A REVERSE MORTGAGE? A reverse mortgage enables you to with-draw a portion of your home’s equity, use it anyway that you like, make no form of monthly repayment (borrower must remain current on property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and HOA dues), stay in your home as long as you like and when you are ready to sell your home or you have passed, the loan is repaid. This program is insured by the Federal Government. You do not forfeit title to your home or lose any other rights as the homeowner. You or your heirs decide when or if the home is to be

sold and after repaying the loan balance, all remaining equity in the home belongs to you or your heirs.WHO QUALIFIES? Qualifying for a reverse mortgage simply requires that the homeowner(s) be 62 years of age or older, own the home as their primary residence and the home must meet standard FHA Appraisal guidelines for property type, value and con-dition. Since the borrower does not make a monthly mortgagempayment (borrower must remain current on property taxes, homeown-er’s insurance and HOA dues), factors such as credit rating, income and assets are minimal.IS IT SAFE? In 1988 HUD adopted reverse mortgages and with the assistance of congress, enacted laws that put into place 12 safeguards that guarantee, as long as the senior borrower adheres to the HUD guide-lines of the loan and remains current on their property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and HOA dues, they will not give up title to their home and will not put themselves, their home

Paying off a traditional mortgage with a reverse mortgage secures the home and reduces the risk of foreclosure due to an inabil-ity to make a monthly mortgage payment (borrower must remain current on property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and HOA dues).HOW MUCH OF MY EQUITY MAY I USE AND HOW DO I TAKE THE FUNDS?
