The comments that were doledout as advice to her ran the gamut,from “run as fast as you can in theopposite direction” to “you can stillmake a great living in this industry.”

It brought me back to my ownconcerns at the tender age of 19when I applied for a parks job. Ithink I had read too many StephenKing novels at that point, becausebeing that it was a blue collar job, I

thought most of theguys probably

wouldn’t have col-lege degrees andthus wouldharass me as a“college boy.”When I

expressed

these concerns to the boss, he said,“If anyone ever does that, you cometo me.” Fortunately, I never didhave to come to him.

I was also concerned about thedanger of working with heavymachinery. Again, probably becauseI read “The Mangler” by StephenKing where a guy gets dragged intoan industrial drycleaning machine.

In the end, everything worked outfine, and I look back at it now as oneof the best jobs I ever had.

One thing I know for sure: if thisyoung woman does decide to workin auto body, she’ll make a heck of alot more than I did as a park mainte-nance worker. And as long as shewears her personal protectionequipment, she won’t have to worryabout her health. She’ll have to rollwith some of the jibes she’ll get as a“newbie,” but that sort of comeswith the territory.

I tell young kids all the timewhat a great opportunity this

industry offers. But it’s goingto take involvement andcommitment from shops tonurture them along.

There was a healthy discussion recently on our website about a youngwoman who was debating whether to pursue a career in collisionrepair or graphic design. She said she loved art but also cars, so shereasoned that perhaps she could combine the two by doing auto

body work. But she was afraid of how she might be received in a male-dominated profession, and she was also concerned about the health risks.

Why Is Everybody Leaving Me?

Irecently got an email from a reader thatmade me think a little bit. His questionwas: Do you have any good ideas onhow to keep technicians?

In my 35-plus years in the industry, I’vecounseled hundreds of shops and have hadthe good fortune of meeting thousands oftechs. Not that this makes me any kind ofexpert, but I’ve developed clear opinionsfrom these relationships and experiences.So here are my thoughts.

First, let’s get the No. 1 complaint off thetable: compensation. Remember, the marketsets the rate. If you try to discount that rate,you’ll lose people constantly. It’s important toevaluate your market regularly and have acompetitive compensation plan. Don’t dowhat you hear people are doing three statesaway or in a different market. Your businessmodel needs to include rates in your localarea that are competitive. The exception is ifyou wish to run a noncompetitive shop andprovide less than what customers in your areaexpect. Evaluate your employees’ skill setsand experience and pay them accordingly. Ifyou don’t, you’ll never get past that first hurdle of retaining good talent.

The next issue is a little less clear. Sincemost of us out there are Baby Boomers, it’seven grayer. We were taught that we werelucky to have a job and should be gratefulfor a paycheck. That’s all changed. Today,it’s, “Is my shop a good place to work?”What type of environment is it?

Start by looking at the office. This is as goodas it gets in most shops. If you see things youdon’t like, it’s only worse in the shop.

Remember, you set the example in the shop. Ifyou let things slide, so will your employees.This sometimes leads to a not-so-good-look-ing environment. Your employees spend atleast one-third of their life at work and want itto be a desirable place to be.

What’s the demeanor of the shop? Dopeople get along, and does it foster a teamenvironment? If not, people get petty andriffs will be ongoing. Do the workers feelvalued? Positive reinforcement and a thankyou go a long way.

Do your people have the training andequipment they need to do their job to thebest of their abilities? This is one area manyowners overlook because it takes an invest-ment to stay current. Remember, an updated item of equipment can many timespay for itself quickly in efficiency gains.New, shiny equipment at the shop acrosstown can look pretty good to a tech who’ssuffering with old technology.

On the training subject, if a tech is well-trained and confident, he or she will bemore efficient at the repairs.

It really starts with us. People stay with organizations they like. Of course, they haveto have the right skill set for their job, but weneed to ensure they have a good environmentto do that work in. It’s a fact that some will gojust because they’re nomadic individuals. Youcan’t stop this behavior. The others who aregood need to stay in our organizations. Besure you’re paying attention and asking thequestion, “Is this a good place to work?” Remember, people are our most valuable resource. See you at NACE! BSB

One of JohnBorek’s favoritequotes is a well-known one from

Albert Einstein: “Insanityis doing the same thingover and over and ex-pecting different results.”

Borek, general manag-er of Autocraft Body-werks Inc. in Austin,Texas, took that quote toheart recently when he

filed criminal trespasscharges against a trouble-some appraiser. Whilemany in the collision in-dustry might considerthis an extreme measure,Borek disagrees.

“What’s extreme is ar-guing and arguing overthe same thing time andtime again,” he said. “Iunderstand that somepeople may think [filingcriminal trespasscharges] is bad, but at the

end of the day, you can’tjust keep doing the samething. It’s like a child –when you tell a kid not todo something and theydo it, there has to be con-sequences.”

In Texas, as a propertyowner, Borek says he hasthe right to file criminaltrespass charges againstsomeone. A process serv-er then serves them pa-pers and basically tellsthem, “If you come back

to this particular addressagain, you will be arrest-ed by the Austin PoliceDepartment.” The letterfrom his attorney on themost recent filing stated:

I represent AutocraftBodywerks Inc. Please takenotice that you are forbiddenfrom entering the propertyoccupied by Autocraft Body-werks Inc., including thatproperty located at 5411Wasson Road, Austin,Travis County, Texas, 78745.

It does not matter whatyour intended business is –appraising vehicle damage,repairs, estimates or any-thing else – DO NOTSTEP ONTO AUTO-CRAFT’S PROPERTY.

If you enter onto theproperty occupied or ownedby Autocraft BodywerksInc., you will be commit-ting criminal trespass andwill be subject to prosecu-tion under Texas law, in-cluding Texas Penal Code30.05. The police will becalled to arrest you if youcome onto Autocraft’s prop-erty. Your criminal trespasscrime would be a Class Bmisdemeanor, punishable bya fine up to $2,000, up to180 days in jail or both.

This tactic, Borek says,has worked in that itspreads the message thatcertain behavior won’t betolerated.

“Word gets out, andwhat I’ve learned – espe-cially if [the appraisers]are independent – is thatit gets their attention be-cause it keeps them frommaking a living. If theyhave another assignmenthere two weeks fromnow, they can’t comeand do it. And they’rebasically keeping mefrom making a living ifall they want to do is ar-gue. If some appraisercomes out and all hewants to do is arguewith you, it really is justa waste of my time. I’vebeen here for 30 years,and I really value mytime. I just can’t do thesame thing over andover again and expect itto be different. Historyhas a way of repeatingitself.”

Borek has only filedsuch an action threetimes. And it’s only a lastresort. Typically, he willinform the appraiser’smanager first, tell himthey have an issue andrequest a different ap-praiser to come out.

“Sometimes a guy willcome out and say, ‘I thinkthat fender can bestraightened,’ and I’mlike, ‘I don’t think so,’”said Borek. “I say, ‘Howmany cars have you re-paired?’ And they say,‘I’ve never repaired a carin my life,’ and I say,‘Well, I’ve repaired over100 of that particular carand been here for 30years and you’re tellingme how to fix that car?’They don’t know thatother shops have broughtthis particular car to usbecause the bumper is

popping off because itwas repaired on the fend-er. But you can’t explainthat to them; they knowit all.”

Ever since filing thecriminal trespass chargesagainst the appraiser, theinsurer has been sendingsomeone else out, andBorek says they getalong great. In anothercase, he had an issuewith an appraiser, so an-other appraiser camealong and asked if it wasOK if the original ap-praiser could come backout, and Borek said yes.Borek’s point is that hedoesn’t have a quicktrigger when it comes tofiling such an action,and it’s only when allother options have beenexhausted.

“In 30 years, I’velearned that most goodappraisers have a way ofmaking everyone happyif they just use their tal-ent,” he said.

Borek wishes moreshops would fight fortheir business like hedoes.

“If more people didwhat I’m doing and these[appraisers] had fiveshops they couldn’t go toin a town, guess what?They’re always going todecide to work versus beshut out. Let’s meethalfway. You want to re-pair the fender, we’re go-ing to replace it. Just payus cost on the fender.Let’s move on.”

One way to give backand improve your ownbusiness at the sametime is to volunteer atyour local auto body vo-cational program. Highschools, tech schools andcommunity colleges thatoffer education for peo-ple interested in enteringour business need your help.

Cries of Woe » I’m in my 44th year in ourindustry, and in every single one of them, arecurring cry of woe has been, “Where willnew technicians come from?” I heard it in1970 from the World War II Navy vets wholearned body work from two uncles: UncleSam, and their favorite uncle who owned ashop. They were absolutely certain no youngperson could ever learn to run lead or brazepanels like they could.

I heard the wails again when the unicoupecar appeared on American assembly lines.Where would techs who could MIG weld andplug weld come from? I heard it again recent-ly at the auto body advisory committee meet-ing at my local community college: “Wherewill the new technicians come from?”

I’m fully aware of the statistics that sayyounger people are less interested in cars.Electronics, computers and laser rays aremuch more interesting than collision repair.It’s hard to argue with that, so where will thetechs come from? How about from the cur-

rent and future student bodies in your neigh-borhood vo-tech program? These kids volun-tarily enrolled in our trade. They wanted tolearn how the repairs are performed on vehi-cles. It’s hard to say they mistook the refinish-

ing classes for RomanHistory 101; these arepeople who want to dothe work we need done.

Negative Attitudes »Sadly, most shop ownersI talk with have a lowregard for graduates oflocal programs.Certainly, some

programs are better than others – betterfunded, better instructed, provide better jobplacement, etc. So those definitely turn outbetter-equipped kids than others.

But one of the significant distinctions thatthe local shop owner often misses is the hugedifference between “attending” the auto bodyprogram and “graduating” from the program.

In too many of the stories I hear from shopowners who explain why they detest their lo-cal programs, they tell me earnestly of thetime they hired a vo-tech kid and _____. Fill inthe blank. The problems are always aroundthe new kid’s poor skill set, work ethic or atti-tude, and the shop owner ends up sayinghe’ll never hire another person from any pro-gram. And he never does. Most likely, thepoorly performing kid was not a graduate ofthe program. Graduation from a good pro-gram means things like regular testing of skillsets, consistent attendance records and a real-istic expectation of their first jobs.

No program will ever be able to turn outseasoned auto body technicians. They getseasoned by working in a body shop! But

wouldn’t you prefer to start with thekids who learned how to do thingscorrectly rather than some other kidwith two years’ experience in onepoorly run shop down the road? Nei-ther one of those kids will be pullinga late-model Jaguar back to square orblending a sail panel on a new Mer-cedes anytime soon. They’ll be doing

the grunt work that makes them sea-soned. Both want into our industry,which is a good thing, but only onespent the time and the money to geteducated on collision repair.

Instructor Woes » I can hear someof you saying, “The instructor at mylocal program is a former [employee,

competitor, lifelong enemy], and hedoesn’t know anything about any-thing!” You have to want to be a vo-tech instructor. I’ve met lots of them,and they’re usually older, formertechnicians who wanted two things:to slow down from the frantic flag-hour racetrack, and to make theirschool’s current auto body programsbetter. What they soon face is a mazeof local, county, state and federal reg-ulations about who, what, when,where and how much it will cost toprovide useful, compliant and legalvocational education.

You think your shop has red tapeand Catch 22-style issues with someof the insurers you deal with? Redtape lives and breeds in publicly (orprivately) funded vocational educa-tion. What made the most sense lo-cally wasn’t necessarily the decisionof distant bureaucrats and legislators.

I’ve seen many newly hired autobody instructors who are soon disap-pointed when they find out that theeducational hierarchy and volumesof compliance rules make their ideasabout speedy program changes im-possible. But you can help them. Vo-cational advisory boards are a keypart of every vo-tech program. Inmany cases, one of the many educa-tional rules is that the advisory boardmust be made up of current mem-bers of the appropriate industry.

Change From Within » My experi-ence is that it’s pointless to try andchange things from outside the deci-sion circle. Instead, you have tochange the decision makers’ minds.You can complain to your peers overcocktails about the quality of thelocal auto body program graduates,the lack of instruction by the lazyinstructors and just how far out oftouch the program really is, but itwon’t change the program in theleast. Bringing it up at the next advi-sory board meeting will at least giveyou the satisfaction that they heardyour issues and have the ability tomake changes to their program.Whatever your local program’s cur-

I’ve been on my local auto bodyadvisory board for 44 years, off andon. I delivered the first air compres-sor to their first rented building as akid with my dad. Well, you say, I would hirethose kids if I knew who they were.You know where they went to work?They got hired by my smart shopfriends who serve on the advisory

It’s All In a Name— But Who Owns It?

Our phones at Optima Automotivewere recently ringing off the hookwith body shop ownersasking questions about

domain names and who ownsthem. I’ve covered this be-fore, but it warrants anothercolumn because this issue cancause major headaches, espe-cially if you don’t own the rightsto your own business domainname. Obviously, the people call-ing us didn’t read my column lasttime or they wouldn’t be cryingout for help now, so I encourageeveryone to stay abreast of the lat-est SEO information by readingme every month in BodyShop Business.

Domain Names » First, what is a domainname? The domain is what is used toassign Web addresses to servers. Your“URL,” or Web address, uses your domainname. For example, yourbodyshopname.com.No one actually “owns” their domainname; in reality, you own the “rights” touse that domain name – or someone does,and that’s a problem. If you don’t own therights to your domain, you could be settingyourself up for trouble. Here are threeexamples from last month’s phone calls:

Tennessee – A shop in Knoxville calledto say they wanted us to build them a web-site. They told their former developer thatthey were moving on with a new developer(us) and would like information about theirdomain registration. Turns out the originaldeveloper purchased the rights to thisshop’s domain name when they set uptheir site a few years ago. And now that theshop plans to move on, this developer was

refusing to transfer the ownership rights tothis shop – that is, unless the shop wantedto pay an exorbitant fee for it.

Registering and owning the rights to adomain name costs about $10 to $12 per

year. That’s it. But we’ve heard storieslike these where developers penalize

you to the tune of $1,000 or more,or even offer to “rent” the rightsto you for a ridiculous fee. In thiscase, the former developer willshut down access to the site sim-

ply by telling the domain reg-istration company that there

is no website associated withthat domain name. That’s bad

news for this shop that not onlyhas their website under that domain name,but also their email addresses. I’ll bet a lotof you do, too. It’s a bummer if you don’town the rights to your own domain andhave an unethical developer.

West Coast – A shop called us to saytheir website was down and asked if wecould fix it. We host the website on ourservers, so we jumped right in to see whatwas wrong. The site was on the server andall was fine, so we dug a little deeper andfound that the shop’s domain registrationhad expired. That’s different than websitehosting, where the files that contain the ac-tual website are housed. We brought this totheir attention, researched who the site wasregistered to and gave them the person’sname. Turns out this individual had passedaway two years ago, so the renewal noticeswere emailed to a deceased person. Thedeadline came and went, and the domainregistration lapsed. When that happens, thedomain registration company (throughtheir domain name servers) no longer tells

computers where a website is host-ed. As a result, it appears that thewebsite is down. So we’re workingwith this shop to communicatethese facts with the registrationcompany so we can try and get therights transferred to the shop own-er. But tick, tick, tick… each daythat passes, the website isn’t onlineand their emails aren’t working ei-ther. These are missed opportuni-ties to fix cars.

Georgia – A panicked shop owner called and said their websitewas down. They found this outwhen they got a notice in the mailthat their business domain namewas for sale. We see lots of thosenotices, and you should disregardthem when you receive them un-less they’re from your actual do-main registration service. But inthis case, the shop checked to see iftheir site was in fact down, and it

was. There’s a 30-day grace periodto get things right after this hap-pens, and after that the domaingoes up for sale. And that’s whathappened. A domain broker (vul-tures, in my opinion) picked it upand paid only $12 for it. The shopwent into their junk email file andfound at least 10 notices abouttheir domain registration renewal,realizing they missed it. Now, thisbroker would be happy to sell thedomain back to the shop for $2,000!

There’s a scene in the beginning of the holidaymovie favorite “The Santa Clause” where, afterTim Allen completes his first night as Santa Clausand still believes it has all been a bad dream, he

flies off in his sleigh to the North Pole and shouts, “MerryChristmas to all, and to all a good night…and in themorning, I’m getting a CAT scan!”

In the face of dwindling profits, increasing insurer in-trusion, increasingly head-scratching technology in ve-hicles, increasing environmental regulations, a decreasingtechnician pool and decreasing crashes in today’s collisionrepair industry, body shop owners might have also sug-gested a CAT scan to Ben Krom when he first proposedopening his own shop several years ago. But it wasn’tfor all those reasons that Krom had never opened hisown shop; it was simply funding. But a customer solvedthat problem.

No Money » The customer had asked Krom to restore his1963 split-window Corvette, and one day during the restora-tion asked Krom why he didn’t have his own shop.

“You’re great with customers, and you do great work,”the customer said.

“Well, it takes a lot of capital and I don’t have themoney,” Krom replied.

“Well, what if you had someone to help you?”A deal was struck: Krom would restore another of the

customer’s cars, a ’58 Corvette, andthe customer would give him the$18,000 needed to restore it up front.Krom followed that up with $15,000from his local bank and $35,000 froma county economic developmentagency, which was used to purchaseequipment. But it wasn’t that easy,and it didn’t happen lickety split.

“I kept getting shot down aftergoing to eight different banks becauseI had a poor credit history and nocollateral,” says Krom. “What Iwould tell any business owner orsomeone who has a dream like thisis that the key to it is persistenceand who you know.”

Krom got to know several different

people who became key players inopening his business, one being thechairman of the board of his countyeconomic development agency. Heworked on a couple of his cars andwas introduced to him by a friend.

“You have to talk the talk and bepersistent and show you’re going tomake this happen one way or an-other,” Krom says. “Every time I leftthe bank, I said, ‘This is going tohappen one way or another, with orwithout you.’ A lot of guys try this,get shot down, put their tail betweentheir legs and walk away saying,‘Well, I tried.’”

After two long years, during whichhe also wrote a business plan (some-thing most aspiring business ownersnever do, greatly increasing the oddsthey will fail) and researched industrystatistics and trends by visitingwww.bodyshopbusiness.com, the powersthat be finally decided to give Kromhis chance and take a risk on him.

It’s Official » As fate would haveit, Krom found the perfect buildingto house his shop – an old dealership.He had his eye on it for severalyears, but it was never for rent. Thenone day as he was driving by, henoticed a “for rent” sign, called theowner and scheduled a meeting thenext day. Three weeks later, thebuilding was his, and West BranchCollision & Classics was born.

On Nov. 4, 2013, the business cele-brated its one-year anniversary. Kromexceeded first-year sales projectionsby more than $100,000 and took homea comfortable salary for himself.

“I was able to hire people andgive back to the community in moreways than I can count. My officemanager complains and says I wouldhave more money if I would stopgiving so much away,” Krom says.“We support local athletic teams anddonate to libraries, theaters and otherorganizations. And we don’t do itto get customers; it’s my personalphilosophy that I have a responsi-bility to give back to the communitiesthat support us.”

Located in rural Walton, N.Y., Kromadmits some might feel his marketwas an easier one to succeed in. Butthe fact is that, with six body shopsin a town of only 5,000 residents andtwo in the village, it’s a highly com-petitive area. Krom learned from hisexperience working in other shopsfor 20 years and set out to do whatno one else was doing.

“I saw what was going on in allthe different shops,” he says. “Youhad one shop that did great qualitywork but the owner was a jerk and

treated customers poorly.There was another shopwhere the guy was nicebut the quality was poor.At another shop, the qualitywas great, but it took sixweeks to get a car done. Isaw no shop in this areathat was providing all thesequalities under one roof,

Keeping an Open Mind

Krom feels like one of the biggest mistakes small business

owners make is not keeping an open mind.

“Far too many times, I’ve seen shop owners I worked for who rest on their

laurels, become king of the mountain, feel like they’re the best and feel like

there’s no way they can improve and are not willing to change or think outside

the box,” he says. “From day one, I always said I have to be willing to keep an

open mind as far as my business philosophy is concerned.”

An example of that open mindedness is the approach Krom took with a

woman he hired as his office manager. When he found out she was also a tal-

ented artist, he decided to start offering airbrushing and marketing the service.

She is now airbrushing motorcycle and snowmobile helmets, Harley fenders,

cars and more.

This same woman also convinced him to change his front showroom. Initially,

he was showcasing classic cars in that space that he had restored, but it gave

people the impression that restoration was all his shop did.

“They forgot about the word ‘collision’ in our title,” says Krom. “People would

say, ‘Why don’t you bring it down to West Branch?’ And they would say, ‘No, they

just do old cars, not modern ones.’”

So she suggested that Krom turn the showroom into a gift shop filled with art

by local artists: pottery, hand-blown glass, photography, paintings and

handmade jewelry. Which he did – and now it’s yet another thing that sets his

shop apart from the rest. And he feels that’s key, especially if a consolidator

were to move to his area at some point.

“You’re writing an estimate, they’re perusing the cases and the next thing you

know they’re buying gifts for Christmas,” says Krom. “I don’t think the ‘big

boxes’ will find this market viable, but keeping an open business philosophy and

knowing you have to make changes – not only because the public wants some-

thing different but because you need to do something different to keep the public

coming in – is crucial.”

so I made that my ultimate goal. Youput all those things under one roof,including getting the car done asquickly and safely as possible withhigh quality, and it’s a home run.”

Also, Krom decided to put specialemphasis on being as friendly aspossible and showing empathy.

“The first thing I say [when a cus-tomer comes in] is, ‘I hope everyoneis okay and no one was injured.’ Wealso inform them so they’re empow-ered with the knowledge to makethe right decision.”

At 7,000 square feet, Krom’s shopis the largest of theeight in his area. Theother shops are gen-erally one- to two-manfacilities, but are well-known and estab-lished. His shop is theonly one in the countythat has both a Face-book page and a web-site, another factor heconsiders critical to his success.

“I cannot emphasize enough howimportant social media is to a busi-ness owner,” says Krom. “We get somany customers off Facebook. Acustomer came in a year after weopened and said, ‘I’ve been watchingyour Facebook page since the dayyou moved in, and I always said tomyself if I ever need body workdone, I’ll go there.’”

Krom will also get messages onhis Facebook site from customerssaying, “Hey, I hit a deer this morn-ing, so I’m going to stop in,” or“Hey, are you open on Saturday? Ineed an estimate.”

Krom has also advertised in localnewspapers, radio and billboards.He advertised on a billboard twicelast year, once in the spring andonce in the fall. cause word of mouth is so crucial.“Word of mouth in a rural area is

so important. You know, ‘My brothergot his car fixed there and you did agreat job.’ It accounts for 90 percentof sales.”

Collision vs. Restoration » Kromestimates that 15 percent of the work

his shop performs is restoration. Thedifference, he says, is that his shopcharges a higher labor rate for restora-tion than collision – $75 per hourvs. $50 – whereas most shops don’t.

“I think it’s a huge mistake withthe amount of time and effort thatgoes into restoration,” he says. “Ispend as much time doing research

and communicating with customersand parts vendors as I do out thereon the car, and I’m not getting paidfor that. Also, consider the attentionto detail we provide, the documen-tation and the photos. Each tech hasa dedicated digital camera and doc-uments every single little patch andpiece of trim. The customer ends upgetting 300 to 400 pictures on a flashdrive. That’s why we charge more.”

Insurer Relations » Krom under-stands the conflicts shops and in-surers frequently have, but aftersmooth sailing in year one, he’sfrankly mystified at the concept of shops blaming insurers for their problems.

“I hear body shops complain allthe time that insurers are screwingthem, and I’m sitting here laughing,”he says. “I’m turning a great profitin my first year in business and hav-ing a blast. What are these peoplecomplaining about? What are theydoing wrong, and what am I doingright? Run a tight ship, watch howmuch paint you mix, don’t throwstuff away – a lot of it is commonsense. You know how a lot of othershops are making a profit? They’regetting paid for an OE part to puton an aftermarket part, or they’regetting paid to replace a part andthey’ll go ahead and fix it. But Idon’t play those games. EverythingI do is straight up on the books.”

Krom says he writes straightfor-ward estimates that aren’t “fluffed”because he thinks the insurer willknock it down. As a result, he hasgained a solid reputation with local adjusters.

“They know the quality of work Ido and that I don’t mess around. I’lleven ask them what labor rate they’repaying. If it’s $48, I’ll write it for $48instead of arguing with them for$50. If that’s what they’re paying,then that’s what I’ll do it at – and Istill make a profit.”

In his 14 years working with ad-justers in his area, Krom says he gotto know the adjusters well, and he

said in general they will pay him foreverything he wants to get paid for.

“I have been in this industry for20 years, and I have yet to see an ad-juster come in and say, ‘We’re goingto cut back on this’ or ‘We’re notgoing to do this anymore.’ The keyto it for me is documentation. I justwant to get paid for what I’m goingto do to the car. If you want to arguewith me on whether something isreally necessary to do to the car, sure,let’s talk about it. But if I’m going todo it to the car and you agree to it,then you will pay me for it.

“It comes down to your attitudeand mindset. Adjusters walk into atypical shop and they’re under a lotof stress, packed with work and over-loaded with estimates, and they facean owner who has that old-schoolmentality of, ‘The insurer is the ene-my,’ so right off the bat you havebad attitudes flying around. I don’t

do that. It’s rare I have an issue. Inone-and-a-half years, I’ve only hadone issue with one adjuster, and afterhe realized I just wanted to repairthe car correctly and get paid for it,he ended up putting in a supplementand paying me for everything I need-ed to do. The next time he came in,we had no problem at all.”

Growth » Krom isn’t taking a verynumbers-like or scientific approachto his growth plans in the future. Tohim, it’s more about the feeling hegets in his stomach when he goes to work.

“My goal is really to wake up anddrive to work happy. If I’m makinga certain salary, paying the bills, ableto give back to the community andrepair people’s cars on time, thenwhether I’m doing $750,000 or $1million doesn’t concern me. I wantto be happy and have fun.” BSB

Spray guns have come a long way fromthis early HVLP version.

If there’s one piece of equipment thatepitomizes the painter and the paintshop, it’s the spray gun. That’s not thecase with painters in other industries,

but for us, a painter isn’t a painterwithout the spray gun.

Over the Years » We’ve cer-tainly seen many spray gunsover the decades. Although

there are operating principlesand functions that remain the

same, some have been improvedupon, and some even outright changed.

Yet through all the changes and im-provements, the one variable com-

ponent that has remainedunquestionably the most im-

portant is the operator. Not-withstanding, even the mostexperienced and forward-thinking painter cannot over-

come physics, the limitationsof design or the lack of equip-ment maintenance.

Market demands have drivenmost spray gun innovationsover the years, but we must alsoconsider the regulatory compli-ance requirements that havechanged the landscape of our in-

dustry. The regulations followed themarket-driven innovations, but by now,I believe the two factions are pulling thewagon toward greater transfer efficiency.Of course, that’s not the only considera-tion or else we would still be using apaint brush or electro-static painting andachieving 100 percent transfer efficiency.There is no brush or electro-static rigI’m aware of that can adequately dupli-cate any suspended metallic paint, letalone a three-stage paint job. Speed ofthe operation has also been a drivingforce in market innovations, and I suspectit will continue to be.

Changes and Challenges » Before wediscuss a painter’s obligation to his spraygun and the efficiency equation, I can’tresist cruising down memory lane andconsidering some of the changes andchallenges we’ve conquered to underscorethe importance of proper equipment.

My first spray gun was a Bink’s #7from my father. What a workhorse! Fifty-five pounds of pressure, and you hadfantastic atomization of even the mostviscous enamel. Push the material througha pressure pot and you could get yourselfa 24-inch fan pattern. Talk about fast onthe big jobs. But that came with a price:lousy transfer efficiency. It wouldn’t beconsidered a viable tool choice today bya material-conscious owner/manager.

stable of spray guns has easedpainters’ grief – guns with interiorair passages designed for optimumair flow; air caps with air shear con-siderations built into the design;fluid nozzles that are sized andaimed specifically at a given painttechnology, such as waterborne.

There was no way to choke downthat old No. 7 and deliver less

material with less pressureand achieve satisfactory

results; that’s akin totrying to get good gasmileage from a big-block V-8 by feather-ing the accelerator orinstalling a single bar-

rel carburetor. There’sbetter support and guidance from

the spray gun manufacturers to-day as well. They leave little roomfor error by working with paint man-ufacturers to establish the best setupsfor the various paint products andthen by educating painters.

The gravity feed spray gunachieved a better rate of transferby simple physics. There was noneed for the air-pressure a stan-dard syphon feed gun requiredto draw material up and out of thecup, so there was less blow backand overspray. Back when I kneweverything, I laughed at the clumsygravity feed gun the Europeans wereusing and knew it would never catchon here. Today, I know painters whohave never used anything but agravity feed gun and couldn’t imag-ine life without one. It truly is a fan-tastic design.

High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP)equipment, while not new, turned outto be the answer to the regulatory de-mands we experienced in SouthernCalifornia in the 1980s. The decades-old vacuum cleaner-type HVLP wasn’tgoing to solve the problem for us, soexisting spray gun technology was“converted” to HVLP. Hey, they werescrambling too! An additional hurdle

Gun Efficiency » There are threemain areas to consider for gun effi-ciency. First is the proper gun setupfor the paint product being used. Don’tguess. Regardless of your preferredgun manufacturer, get the proper noz-zle/needle/cap combination for theproduct. That’s No. 1, and at times itwill mean a new spray gun.

No. 2 is the proper application ofthe product, according to both thepaint and spray gun manufacturer.Again, don’t guess. There are specificair pressure, distance and overlap rec-ommendations as well as temperatureand humidity considerations. Therefore,get the proper information for yourenvironment. While critical to get right,

these two variables alone – gun set-up and application – will become sec-ond nature. As such, you won’t evenreally give it much thought once you’reover the learning curve. Don’t let thatbe the way you approach No. 3. Butbefore I get to No. 3, which is key toconsistency, I think it’s important tostress the absolute necessity of consis-tent air pressure when talking aboutspray gun efficiency. One of our goalsis consistency and repeatability. Thisis what allows us to paint fenders andhoods off of cars and have them matchand what makes the color library sovaluable. Air pressure has a tremendouseffect on consistency, and to minimizethat, we must regulate the air.

If your booth is like most, the air isregulated to about 120 pounds of pres-sure. We utilize that kind of pressurewhen we’re blowing off the vehicle.We then “regulate” the pressure downwith a cheater valve attached to thegun. That is not regulating the air. Thecheater valve is like putting yourthumb over a garden hose; you’ve cutdown the volume but increased thevelocity. So you further throttle downthe air volume to achieve the “pressure”you’re after.

If the pressure before the “valve”fluctuates, then the pressure after the“valve” also fluctuates. You need anactual diaphragm-type regulator tothrottle down the pressure properly.If you choke down the pressure witha cheater valve, you leave yourselfopen to air line fluctuations due to thepressure in the compressor’s tankdropping and building as other techstap into the air supply. This leads toinconsistent pressure and inconsistentapplication. It may not matter if you’repainting school bus yellow, but I suspectthe lion’s share of your jobs are metallic.Consistent pressure does matter. Theanswer is either throttling down thewall-mounted regulator or having anactual gun-mounted regulator. A bitlarger than a gun-mounted cheatervalve, the regulator has a diaphragm.

An easy test to see if you’re using acheater valve or regulator is to set it at15 pounds or so and pull the trigger,

then dial the fan adjustment to thesmallest pattern. If you have a cheatervalve, the pressure will increase by anoticeable amount. If it’s a regulator,it won’t. By the way, the vast majorityof painters, in my observation, use acheater valve and blame the inconsis-tencies on the product being sprayed.

In addition to a regulator, high-flowair fittings should be utilized, as wellas an air line with 5/16-inch I.D. min-imum, 3/8-inch being even better.

Finally, in ring No. 3, we have gunmaintenance. It’s so easy, but so com-monly neglected. Oh I know, the gunlooks great, and it’s going in the auto-matic gun washer after each job. AndI know, not only is that seldom enough,a poorly maintained gun washer doesmore harm than good.

Ever wash dishes? Or the car? Doyou use a sponge or rag of some sort,or just spray things off with a hose?Of course you wash it first, then rinse.

Or perhaps you put the dishes in thedishwasher. The dishwasher is not re-cycling dirty, greasy dishwater. Fresh,clean, pressurized water every time.Not so with the automatic gun washer

as it recycles the cleaning solvent. If the gun washer is your own, and

if only you use it and properly cleanthe sludge and paint from your gunprior to using it, then maybe you have

decently clean solvent for a month ortwo, depending on the volume of ve-hicles you paint. That’s a lot of “ifs”and one “maybe.” Take away thoseifs and you probably have a shop-owned gun cleaner that never getsmaintained and is full of sticky, soupygravy. Worse yet, perhaps you’re op-erating on the edge of insanity andusing an open “birdbath” full of thinnerfor cleaning purposes. While thesemethods are temporary at best anddangerous at worst, they representonly a precursor of spray gun mainte-

nance. I have yet to meet a painter(myself included) who tore his gundown each time and re-lubed it duringreassembly. I spent 30 years as a flat-rate collision repair refinisher, and Ididn’t always maintain my equipmentproperly. I didn’t think I had time. Ididn’t understand the relationship thatexists between spray gun maintenanceand accuracy and consistency, nor howthat relates to efficiency.

Accuracy » You might be tired of medroning on about it, but there is nothing

faster than accuracy. Accuracy is a by-product of consistency. How does thisrelate to spray gun maintenance? Here’sa question for painters: Have you evertorn down a gun, soaked it, scrubbedit, rinsed it, lubed it and reassembledit, test drove it, then proclaimed, “Iforgot how awesome this gun sprays?”Me too. I made that statement in frontof my brother, a Marine Corps heli-copter mechanic, who replied, “Youshould never be able to tell the differ-ence.” From his perspective of keepinga Huey from falling out of the sky,you performed routine scheduledmaintenance rather than waiting for asputtering engine to fail.

So how often do you need to performthat routine maintenance? That de-pends on your daily gun cleaninghabits previously mentioned, as wellas volume. Don’t be the guy whoneeds to keep a fire extinguisher closeby in order to have the wire holdingthe maintenance/inspection cardhandy for poking out dirty air capholes. Instead, be the guy whose dailymaintenance keeps those holes clear.There are fantastic cleaning kits avail-able today that simply didn’t exist indays gone by. Invest in your own gunwasher. They’re pretty affordable thesedays, and you’ll wonder why youdidn’t make that investment sooner.

One more thing to mention regardingautomatic gun washers and air pres-sure: If you fail to isolate the interiorair passages of your spray gun whileit’s in a gun washer, or otherwise failto keep the air passages clean, consis-tency will suffer due to an incrementalbuildup of crud in the air passages.This can restrict passage size, whichin turn acts like the cheater valve andincreases velocity despite what thegauge says. Dirty, sticky cleaning sol-vent hastens this effect. BSB

When I sat down to writethis article, I tried tothink of a clever openingparagraph. When I

couldn’t come up with anything, Iwasn’t too upset because I realizedbeing clever wasn’t important – butdoing quality welds is. Asking “Howare your shop’s welds?” is a seriousquestion with serious ramifications.It’s also a controversial subject.

Some may be offended, othersmay be mortified. Still others maylearn. The questions are familiar. Fortechnicians, they are: How good are

your welds? How do you know?For managers, the questions are: Doyou know if a weld is good or not?How do you know?

Wow and Not-So-Wow » BeforeI go any further, let me preface thisarticle by saying that as I travelthis country and see many types ofshops from all different areas, I’mtickled at how much pride manytechnicians take in their work. Thequality in this industry keeps amaz-ing me. In the last year, I’ve beenseriously wowed on my trips. But

I’ve also seen shops that didn’twow me.

I started asking all the shops,“What makes you run?” The “wow”shops all had the same answer: in-vesting in employees. Not just train-ing, but including them on shopissues. Creating a team, not justemployees. Helping them see thebig issues and understand whythings need to be done. Accounta-bility was a common word used.The “not-so-wow” shops had excuseafter excuse, blaming someone else.Accountability struck a chord inmy head.

Types » One of the most commonand important procedures the colli-sion industry does is weld. We dovarious types of welds, includingGas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) inthe form of Metal Active Gas Welding(MAG) with 75 percent argon/25percent CO2 (or a similar combina-tion) and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) with100 percent argon. This includes alu-minum and silicon bronze welding.Many shops have also invested in aSqueeze Type Resistance Spot Welder(STRSW). No matter what type ofwelding or machine you have inyour shop, the question to all tech-nicians and managers is: How goodare your welds? When was the lasttime you checked?

The I-CAR welding test (WCS03)showed me some interesting things,including that many techniciansare great welders. It also showedthat many technicians don’t knowhow to set up a welder. Do yours?Do you?

Ask most technicians who tookthe I-CAR WCS03 test and they’lltell you they learned a lot aboutwelds and machines. Most commentthat the test improved their weldingand understanding of the importanceeach weld has to a vehicle structure.

Training for many like myself was along time ago, so many basics havebeen forgotten. I don’t know of anyprofession where, after a long time,a refresher course isn’t needed.

Good vs. Bad » What makes a goodweld? Without getting too technical,it takes:

1. A person to weld. (This includes the ability to see wherethey’re welding).

2. A welder that is correct and setcorrectly for the material to weld.

3. Training of the operator to usethe welder.

If any of these three categoriesaren’t working correctly, a bad weld

will be made or won’t be dependingon how you look at it. So let’s breaksome basics down.

Technicians1. Do they have the correct safety

equipment? Protective clothing? Respirators? Do they use them?

2. Vision. Do they wear glasses?If a technician needs to put on glass-es to read instructions or car labels,glasses or cheaters might need tobe one of their required tools. Youneed to see the weld to make aquality weld.

3. A welding visor seems to be anoption for many technicians. “Lookaway” welders are abundant in ourindustry. If you hear or see a welder,check to see if they’re wearing avisor. There seem to be a lot of handshielders, too, or people who cansee the weld just by holding up theirhands in front of the arc. However,this will burn out your eyes quickly.

4. Respirator. Welding galvanizedsteels and other metals may producefumes that contain heavy metals,which can lead to serious health issues. Many shops I see forgo therespirators and instead have fansblowing on technicians. The problemwith this is that the shielding gasyou need to make a quality weldalso gets blown away.

Welders1. Proper power supply. Do you

have extension cords attached? Areyou supposed to? Does your shophave enough power at that outlet?If four other people are operatingequipment on that same circuit, whomight not be getting correct power?

2. Properly maintained machine.Are the tips correct and not dam-aged? Is the nozzle in good shapeand correct for the application? Arethe rollers for the wire clean andcorrect? Improperly maintained ma-chines are a big reason for failedwelds and technicians struggling toweld. This has a huge impact onproduction.

3. Proper wire. Is the tensile

strength correct and/or the alloy for application accordingto the vehicle manufacturer? Is the liner clean? Is thehelix correct? Is the wire diameter correct?

4. Settings. Are the settings for the material correct?Check inside the wire panel for directions on this.

5. Gas and gas settings. What type of gas? Are yousupposed to be MIG or MAG welding? What PSI shouldthe gas be?

Training1. Does the technician know how to set up the

machine? This sounds like a “duh” statement, but youwould be surprised at how many don’t know how todo this. They just keep making adjustments until itsounds good.

2. Do they understand the parameters of the adjust-ments? Just because it sounds good doesn’t mean they’remaking good welds.

3. Do they know how to prep metal for welding? Dothey understand thickness of material? Corrosion protection? Contamination?

4. What type of weld do they need to make? Contin-uous plug stitch or skip?

5. Depending on the type of welding required forspecific metals (wire or weld), do they use the push orpull technique?

6. Do they have or use a shunt during STRSW orspot welding?

7. Do they know when MIG brazing is required?I could ask many more questions in each category,

but I think you get the idea. If you’re a shop owneror manager and your answer to these questions isyes for every technician who welds in your shop,awesome! Now, just one last item needs to be done:show me. I don’t want to see how pretty the weldis; I want to see how strong it is. A big wake-up callis a video in the new I-CAR course (FFR01) thatshows a weld being done on a frame. One welderwas properly powered, and one wasn’t. The welderthat was set correctly and had the proper amperageto weld the frame did great. The welder that wasunderpowered made a good-looking weld, but theweld failed miserably. The lesson here is that lookscan be deceiving.

Test Welds » Because looks can be deceiving, I’m abig fan of test welds prior to welding on a vehicle. Atest weld is the exact weld being made on the samethickness and position of material, preferably damagedmetal from the vehicle that’s going to be discarded.Following the test weld, a destructive test done in avise will properly indicate if you’re set to weld the vehicle.

Another reason to do a test weld is that many weldersdon’t make a good quality weld cold. Electronics,

Too many times, technicians getout the welder and set up and startwelding on a vehicle. The personwho used the welder before couldhave made the settings way off, orthe tip could be garbage. It may takea weld or two or four or five to figureit out. The point is, how many practicewelds does a vehicle manufacturerallow to be done on a vehicle? Howmany of these practice welds couldfail? How many could cause corro-sion? How bad could this get? Howquickly can a shop’s reputation bedestroyed by one technician in a shop?This is why we ask for test welds.And by asking for test welds, all tech-nicians welding in the shop – not justone technician or a role rep – knowwhat’s expected. Back to accounta-bility. Remember, it isn’t just yourreputation on the line. Your cus-tomers are betting their lives onthese welds.

Eliminating the Bad » A test weldgives you the benefit of knowingthat all your technicians know whatthey are and what they need to do.The test weld gets the bad out ofthe system. Many first welds orcold welds fail destructive testing.Why would any shop or technicianwant this weld anywhere on a ve-hicle? The test weld gives you, as amanager and owner, the confidencethat your technicians know how totest and judge their own work, too.The little bit of time preparing andtesting can help you avoid or reducemany comebacks for quality controlor, in worst case scenarios, issuesin a crash. This will also show thatthe shop followed the repair pro-cedures required by vehicle manu-facturers. During re-inspections,many times it’s the welds that costa shop.

Conducting a Weld Test

Here’s a basic example of how to do a test. The requirements and best procedures

will be noted in automaker guidelines or are available from I-CAR. Examples

and videos will be in “MY I-CAR” on I-CAR’s website if you’ve already taken tests.

Have a technician complete a test weld on two pieces of metal being discarded from

the vehicle. They need to be able to be clamped in a vise. Check for any voids or

porosity. Also, check for the proper height and width of the weld. If any voids or “miss”

are present, then try again. Look on the back for penetration results for butt joints

with or without backing and lap or similar welds. Place in a vise and, using duck bill

vise grips, move one piece back and forth until it breaks. Look at where the metal

split. The weld should have torn metal out of the base material, not at the weld.

For plug and spot welds, configure the metal so that it can be placed in a vise.

Clamp down and peel one from the other in a downward motion. One will tear,

leaving a nugget on the piece still in the vise. Measure the nugget to the require-

ments of the vehicle manufacturer’s specs.

What every paint manufac-turer has in common is thequest to create a perfect color match.

“Frankly, color match is our busi-ness – that’s what we sell,” saysHarry Christman, marketing managerfor Axalta Coating Systems.

Meanwhile, this goal has expandedbeyond color match in recent years withefforts to go “green” through R&D andproduct introductions featuring low-VOCsolvent-based and waterborne systemsthat stand up to the National Rule. Changeis scary, but technology is easing the pain.

“Shops are concerned about getting aproduct that will provide the same colorand [drying] speed they’re used to inorder to stay productive,” says LouisaMeijer, global product manager at Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes.

Compliance, conversion, cost – thesefactors roll around in shop owners’ headswhen considering a switch from the Na-tional Rule to new low-VOC formulationsthat meet environmental mandates.

Several factors make com-pliance less of a headacheand an expense for bodyshops. Waterborne conversiontraining and a range of equip-ment (suiting various budg-ets) to support this processgives shops choices shouldthey opt to switch over towater. Low-VOC solvent-based paints meet regulatedstates’ requirements whilegiving shops a “drop in” tech-nology. All they’ve got to dois switch paint types.

“We look at a product like[our low-VOC solvent-basedpaint] as giving shops a new lease on life because they canput this product in without increasing their costs orinvesting, and then when regulations come, they’re com-pliant,” Christman says.

The regulations aren’t going anywhere. Today, the EPA-mandated level of VOCs allowed in paint products suchas a basecoat is 3.5 pounds per gallon. “There are many

ways to get there,” Christmansays of the techniques for-mulators use to reduce sol-vents in low-VOC “overs”and “unders” (primers,basecoats, clear-coats). Somemanufacturers are relying ona handful of exempt solvents;others use resins to controlthe way paint behaves whilemeeting the 3.5 VOC limit.

“The low-VOC solvent-borne products provide a bitof a bridge so shops can diptheir feet into the technology,”says Mike Carroll, new prod-ucts introduction manager at

BASF. “It gets shops into a more modern paint systemwith better color matches and newer technology.”

And, there’s not a great deal of commitment involvedwith using a low-VOC solvent-based paint. You purchasethe product and substitute it for the National Rule formu-lations you’ve been using.

Meanwhile, waterborne has grown significantly moresophisticated since the first generation systems were intro-duced when California adopted Clean Air Act regulations.And, Meijer reminds, not all waterborne systems arecreated equal. “What they have in common is water [actingas a solvent],” she says.

The good news for shop owners: There are lots ofoptions if you want to “clean up” your paint operation –an array of low-VOC solvent-based and waterbornesystems. BodyShop Business spoke with a range of paintsuppliers to find out what makes these products work,what to consider when converting and what’s on thehorizon as the industry continues to develop smarter, saferways to generate that coveted perfect color match.

Manipulating Paint Behavior » If you ask Axalta, here’sa lesson on what not to do when formulating alternativesto National Rule products: “Don’t attempt to make water-borne behave like solvent-based paint,” Christman says.This maxim defines their approach and R&D efforts.

Specifically, Christman is referring to the one and a halfcoat, wet-on-wet technology involved in the company’swaterborne paint system. “You don’t have to wait for onecoat to dry before applying your next coat of paint,” he ex-plains. “As soon as you’re done spraying the first coat,you can come back with your second, or ‘half coat.’ It’s amuch faster way of painting and brings a lot of productivityto body shops.”

But, Christman admits, the “painful” part about water-borne for some shops is change. Enter Axalta’s brand-newlow-VOC solvent-based option that acts like what paintersare accustomed to with traditional paint. “There is no

change in equipment or training required,” he says.

The problem is, low-VOC solventbasecoats have had a reputation forpoor color match. While trying to meetthe 3.5 limit, there are fewer solventsavailable to manipulate the paint’sproperties, so in some cases the quality,finish or color can suffer. Also, low-VOC solvent-based paint can dry toofast, creating problems with paint set-ting up too quickly or dry spray dur-ing application, mainly inhot environments.

Axalta uses resins in com-bination with solvents to controlthe way its low-VOC paints be-have, Christman says. “Resin isintroduced into application binder(traditionally called the base maker)after you create the mixed color,”he says. “The application binder con-tains specific resins that are requiredby environmental conditions the painteris working in to create a paint that behaves like what the painter is usedto, but you get there a totally differentway than with traditional paint.”

As for the future, Christman says“speed clears” providing high-gloss,fast-drying clearcoats are in develop-ment, as are UV curing paints using anew UV lamp Axalta introduced sixmonths ago that works like a spraygun, emitting UV light and makingprimer ready to stand in 30 seconds.

Successful Conversion » Adaptingto change is a real barrier to waterborneconversion, along with budgeting forequipment and infrastructural reno-vations to run a system: spray guns,spraybooths, blowers, etc. Not all shopshave to start from scratch, but upgradesare generally required.

All this change can overwhelm shopowners – and discourage them fromgoing waterborne. It doesn’t have tobe that way. “We take our customersto one of our six training centers inthe U.S., and one in Canada, and wespend a full day reviewing the productsand doing demos to show them howthe products spray and perform sothey can get some hands-on experience

as to what waterborne paint lookslike,” Sherwin-Williams’ Meijer says.

With 190-plus Sherwin-Williamscompany stores staffed with knowl-edgeable representatives, no shop own-er is alone during the conversion –and help is close by. “Our staff goes

on site to shopsand works

through the conversion with them asthey change over to waterborne prod-ucts,” Meijer says.

Seeing is believing with waterborne.When shop owners experience thepaint process and crunch the num-bers – we’re talking productivity –they have a hard time discountingwaterborne as a viable option. Plus,pigments are cleaner, Meijer says. “Youget the sharp colors that are on vehiclestoday in the marketplace,” she says.“That is the reason that many OEMsthat are producing vehicles today are

on waterborne systems – becausethe color and coverage is that much

better compared to solvent-based.”More shops located in non-

regulated states are movingto waterborne systems, Meijersays, crediting the cycle timefor this switch. “Our HP

Process with AIR-BAKE Tech-nology allows a collision facility to gofrom prime to shine in 40 minutes orless,” she notes. “That is accomplishedwithout turning on heat in the booth.”

Fewer Coats to Make a Match »With compliance top of mind amongshop owners, switching to a low-VOCsolvent-based product is a solutionwithin reach, says Marcus Malnar,technical service supervisor for TranstarAutobody Technologies. “They don’treally have to change their processes,”he says.

Efficacy and Color Match » Transtaroffers a no-mix product that does notrequire mechanical agitation, as mostother basecoat systems do, Malnarsays. “That is because of the resins weuse with our binders,” he explains.“They keep the pigment evenly dis-tributed throughout the toner.”

That way, when spraying thebasecoat, metallic flakes are easily “oriented,” which can mean avoidingthat extra coat to get the finish to laydown correctly, Malnar says. “Thereare more choices for shop ownerstoday when choosing a low-VOC sol-vent-based product, and the productsare getting better,” he says. “Since

we’ve had more time to play with theexempt solvents that we have to workwith, we’ve been able to come up withdifferent combinations and more effective products.”

Color Match » Using the latest Euro-pean toner technology provides colormatch, coverage and performance atAutomotive Art Group, which canmatch more than 150,000 colors using58 toners. The company offers a low-VOC solvent basecoat system thatmeets mandates in California, Canadaand other regulated states, says DereckFoster, executive chairman.

“We are just about to launch ourlow-VOC HS Clear and Primer thatwill comply with regulations,” Fostersays, noting that the company is nowdeveloping a waterborne color systemit hopes to launch in early 2015.

“The transition from regular solventto low-VOC is very easy,” Foster says.“It’s just a different system.”

Looking forward, future finisheswill be more vibrant than those avail-able today, Foster says. “They mayeven allow the car owner to changethe color appearance of their car bysimply turning a switch.”

Nanotechnology » The future of refinishes could lie in nanotechnologyat BESA – Bernardo Ecenarro S.A.,where R&D labs are focused on hownanotechnology can be applied toresins and additives. This technologycould make paint products more resistant, says Amaia Mujika, marketingmanager.

Meanwhile, BESA brings Euro tech-nology to the U.S. with products likeits ultra high solids acrylic clearcoatfor bi-coat systems. “This product isone of the most sold clears in Europeand one of the top products in ourproduct range,” Mujika says. “Theprimers and clears BESA offers in Eu-rope and the U.S. are different formu-lations based on legislation. Thecompany is one of Europe’s key man-ufacturers, and products have beenadapted to the Canada/U.S. legislation,but always maintaining the quality

standard of our entire product range.” BESA is working toward waterborne

because, “in Europe, it seems that thetrends are water-based products,” Mujika says.

“In the U.S., we see that it’s possibleto adapt solvent-based products to thecurrent laws, and we’re working inthis way,” she says. “If the legislationchanges in the near future, becomingmore restrictive, we’ll have to talk aboutwater-based or UV technologies.”

Coverage » Before selecting a low-VOC solvent-based product, shopsshould carefully evaluate product cov-erage, says Gina Mahan, North Amer-ican marketing manager for ValsparAutomotive. “Make sure you test [thepaint] and be sure that it works foryour shop,” she advises. “Low-VOCsolvent systems are NOT all equal.You must look at the coverage andtotal cost. The Valspar Low-VOC sol-vent-based system allows you moreflexibility than most. Most basecoatcolors cover in three coats, and theease of application versus other solventsystems is unmatched. This systemallows you to make both 3.5-VOCbasecoat, but also 2.8-single stage colorsall off the same rack.”

Waterborne systems have evolvedin recent years, and Valspar’s “truewaterborne system” includes high-coverage toners, where R&D has beenfocused the last couple of years.

“What makes our waterborne systemdifferent in the market is a non-agitationsystem, so products can be stored ona standard shelf and do not require amix machine,” Mahan says.

Adds Todd Everitt, Valspar WesternRegion technical manager, “A ‘truewaterborne system’ is a latex-basedpaint line. Not all ‘water’ systems arethe same. Water systems that requirea mix machine to agitate the tints aresolvent reduction water systems. TheDeBeer 900 line requires no mixingmachine for mixing. The high-strengthpigment load allows colors to coverin two coats that can be applied in awet-on-wet application. There’s noneed for additional binders in the sys-

tem to aid in blending or color appli-cation versus a solvent reduction watersystem that requires additional stepsof product applied to the vehicle toblend most colors. Our patented dis-pensing system is similar to a caulkinggun in theory. This system decreasesthe amount of air that can be trappedin the tint and allows for more of thetint to be used as the sides of the can are wiped clean as the tint is dispensed.”

Rolling out low-VOC products asan alternative to its National Rulepaints is a priority. For example, Valsparintroduced an air-dry clear that isavailable in National Rule and low-VOC versions, Mahan says.

As for the future, shops will needto adapt to these new formulations.Regulations, Mahan says, “are here to stay.”

Beyond Exempt Solvents » Thereare a handful of “exempt solvents”that the EPA has deemed safer thantheir ozone-depleting cousins, whichcontribute to smog and must be limitedto just 3.5 pounds per gallon in auto-motive paint products (in regulatedstates). “What makes the U.S. andCanada unique is that we are the onlyregions in the world that allow paintcompanies to utilize these exempt sol-vents to meet VOC requirements,”points out Tim Jones, PPG refinishcollision waterborne segment manager.

“In the rest of the world, exemptsolvents are not allowed,” Jones em-phasizes. “You must meet VOC re-quirements through higher solids orby using more water as your solventin the system.”

So when talking about future tech-nologies, suppliers should take aglobal view of VOC-compliant prod-ucts, Jones says. “It’s a much largermarket than just the U.S. market thatallows exempt products.”

PPG waterborne systems use latexas the backbone, providing versatilityand “usability,” Jones says. (Othermanufacturers also use latex alongwith other additives, such as water-soluble resins.)

Overall, low-VOC technology isevolving because suppliers are invest-ing more in R&D to provide resinsand additives that work well with waterborne basecoats, Jones says. “Ifyou look back 10 years, there is a hugeamount of change that has happenedin our industry in terms of the amountof products that are available for com-panies like PPG to make [waterborneand low-VOC products].”

For example, when PPG first intro-duced its waterborne system in 2007to meet regulations in California andCanada, it was a basecoat system only.“Today, we have engineered ‘overs’and ‘unders’ that work with waterbornebasecoats to give you better perform-ance characteristics, whether a betterbuild on the primer, better adhesionand better gloss,” Jones says.

PPG is heading in the direction ofworking toward a full, production-ready waterborne system, Jones says.“That means waterborne primer, seal-ers, basecoats and clearcoats,” addingthat this is a “lofty goal. Today, for-mulators only have ‘bits and pieces.’

Elevating Quality » Durability. Cost.Compliance. These issues are top offormulators’ minds, says James DeLuca,quality control manager and chemistat ChemSpec. If you’re driving arounddown south, you’ll see cars with faded,chipped and peeling clearcoats. DeLucasays that’s evidence of a “battle forcost” when creating low-VOC solvent-based products.

There’s a balance to strike betweenmeeting VOC requirements whilemaintaining costs and ensuring quality.“If the cost [isn’t in line], then shopsare not going to buy low-VOC productsif they can still use National Rule,”DeLuca says.

The thing is, achieving durabilityand gloss levels in a waterborneclearcoat is no easy feat. “You are put-ting water [as a solvent] into resinsthat can hydrolyze and break downdurability,” DeLuca says, noting thatChemSpec products are “true water-borne” and not just “water reducible.”

Waterborne is the long-term future,

but that will require a paradigm shift,DeLuca says. “We spend a lot of timetraining our customers and educatingthem on new waterborne systems andhow to spray and how to color matchand make adjustments, and once theyget past the fear, they realize it’s arobust system,” he says. “It’s not likethe old days of water.”

Low-VOC Comfort Zone » If shopowners can ease into a low-VOC systemthat “feels” like the National Rulethey’ve always used, this option is ap-pealing by nature. And that’s especiallythe case if compliance can be achievedwithout extra cost or capital invest-ments (spraybooths and more).

So offering a platform of low-VOCbasecoats that act like the formulaspainters know is a win, says AntonyModarressian, QAP director of tech-nology at Quest Automotive Products.Matrix’s MPBLV Low VOC System isavailable in up to 200,000 color for-mulations, Modarressian points out.

There are shops that succeed withwaterborne and embrace the produc-tivity and environmental improvementthese systems offer. And there areothers that recognize that they canmeet regulations using the low-VOCsolvent-based paint instead and preferthis option. Matrix’s MPBLV Low VOCSystem includes compliant bindersand toners. “We are not trying to makea system work by adding a binder –in other paint systems, the toners arenot true low-VOC. QAP/Matrix’sentire system is designed [to be low-VOC], and I think that is why paintersI have seen in the field are havingsuch success,” Modarressian says.

This results in a sound and higherquality of finish because each toner isa true low-VOC. A painter will see nodifference between using Matrix’s low-VOC formulas compared to NationalRule versions, Modarressian says.

As for the future, Modarressian sayswaterborne is the long-term solution,though low-VOC solvent-based for-mulas will be out there for some time.“Stricter VOC limits are starting tomake their way throughout the country,

so while those rules can initially beachieved through low-VOC solvent-based products, over time to be moreresponsible, [the industry] will startshifting toward more truly green tech-nologies of waterborne and maybeother alternatives.”

Pushing Productivity » BASF wasthe first company to introduce a sol-vent-based, low-VOC product, saysMike Carroll, new products introduc-tion manager. “It’s all about produc-tivity,” he says, relating that thislow-VOC solution is a bridge for shopswanting to comply or beat regulations.

The high-solvent, solid-mixing clearsallow for fast drying in any environ-ment, Carroll says. “If it’s raining out,and you’re using a color that mightnot hide well, trying to get the waterout of that is a big challenge in a wa-terborne event,” he says, relating thatthe low-VOC solvent products worklike conventional solvent-bornebasecoats. The ONYX Low-VOC Pro-ductive System does not require ad-ditional drying equipment to be usedin the booth.

In fact, the solvent-based low-VOCproduct might dry a bit too fast forsome applications, such as a high-metallic job on a large truck. “We arelimited in what reducers we can use[because of VOC regulations],” he ex-plains, noting that waterborne systemsare ideal for larger jobs, and allowshops to maintain productivity.

As for the future, Carroll says, “It’snot only products, but also process-related.” He’s referring to training andsupport to give paint technicians skillsto pick a perfect color match and bestuse these new products on the market.

Meanwhile, shops that want to con-vert to waterborne with the BASF sys-tem have the flexibility to spraysolvent-based or waterborne productsfrom one system. “[Onyx HD] putsthe control back in paint technicians’hands so they can perform the jobsthey need to,” he says. BSB

First it came to Formula 1, then to

super cars and now BMW has

become the first manufacturer to

embrace the ultralight composite

on a mass-produced series of models.

The i3 city car became the first

production model to use carbon fiber,

with extensive use of the composite for

the cockpit, body panels, roof, hood

and seats. The BMW i8 sports car,

coming out later this summer, will

follow suit. And the new 7-series will

also employ the composite extensively.

The bold move on behalf of BMW

represents the first example of a

mass-produced car using a carbon

fiber cockpit, and one of the most

extensive examples of carbon fiber

bodywork. There’s also word that

Toyota and GM are working on carbon

fiber options.

The ultralight composite is difficult to

manufacture, and this has long been

the prohibiting factor when

it comes to its implementation. With

more investment in manufacturing

techniques, it has become

substantially easier to produce carbon

fiber inexpensively. New methods of

molding and forging, combined with

improved resin injection, are being

developed across the globe. Carbon

fiber may fall to just a third of its

original price by the end of this year.

With three times the tensile strength of

steel and about a third the weight, the

composite, consisting of interwoven

carbon nano-fibers, may just be

making its big breakthrough.

Still, there are some who aren’t quite

sold, including performance

powerhouse Ferrari. About a year ago,

the Maranello-based sports car

manufacturer made clear its intentions

to eschew the new composite in favor

of what it saw as a better alternative –

lightweight aluminum. And because

carbon fiber is not practical or

economical for use on certain chassis,

suspension and unibody components,

steel and aluminum will be kept

around for many more years.

Despite the reservations of a few, it

appears as though the carbon fiber

march has picked up momentum. Now

that the composite has attracted the

attention of the mass production

automotive giants of the world, many

are interested in investing in the high-

tech material. Several top automakers

are said to be ready to jump in to catch

up with BMW’s lead. As the green

revolution continues, carbon fiber will

be at home with manufacturers striving

to cut weight in the name of fuel

efficiency and performance. The

ultralight composite may even make its

way into our daily drivers by the end of

the decade.
