• People who are usually inactive can significantly improve their health and well-being by becoming even moderately active on a regular basis.
• Physical activity doesn’t have to be strenuous to benefit your health.
• You can benefit even more by increasing the length of time, frequency and intensity of your exercise.

How To Exercise For Different Body Shapes

Everyone has a certain type of body shape. You might be a pear shape, an hourglass shape, a ruler shape, or an apple shape. Let’s take a quick look at what these shapes mean.

Pear/Spoon Shape• For Men:Pear/Spoon Shape – A
man with this type of body shape is usually larger in the hips and thighs than in the chest and arms. He is usually petite in the arms and chest. A lot of men with this body type have an athletic type build.
• For Women:Pear/Spoon Shape –You
have larger hips, with a smaller chest and arms. Most women with this body type have flat stomachs and chests.

Spoon Body Type Problem Areas and Characteristics:
• Lower body is considerably larger than the upper body
• Thick upper thighs • Thick calves • Upper body tends to be
weaker than the lower body • Saddlebags

If you are a Pear/SpoonIf you are a pear you will want to focus on exercises that will balance out the top half of your body with the bottom half of your body. You will also want to try to thin down your lower half. To achieve this, focus on aerobic activities that work out your lower body, and resistance exercises that will build your
upper body. Some great activities include:
• walking • cycling (with low resistance) • elliptical training • jumping rope • leg lifts and dips • push ups, chin ups, and shoulder presses

Hourglass Shape• For MenHourglass Shape –
No, guys. This doesn’t mean you’re girly. This is actually the shape many football players have, with small waists and hips, and broad shoulders and muscular thighs.
• For WomenHourglass Shape –
This is one of the favorite shapes of a woman. Your shoulders and hips are about equal in width, and you have a small waist and normally flat tummy.

and Characteristics: • Noticeable difference between the
size of the chest and waist • Noticeable difference between size
of waist and hips • Tendency to be a bit slimmer in the
waist • Hourglasses tend to look lighter than
their actual weight would indicate • Hourglasses tend to gain mass in the
thighs and the back of the arms

If you are an Hourglass'If you are have an hourglass figure, then you should be focusing on both cardio and resistance exercises. Cardio will assist in keeping your weight in check, while resistance exercises will help to maintain balance between your upper and lower body. Here are
some great exercises that you may want to try: • slow jogging • stationary biking (with light resistance) • jumping jacks • swimming • bicep curls, shoulder presses, and squats

Ruler Shape
• For MenRuler Shape – You
are probably pretty thin, with minimal muscle build up.
• For WomenRuler Shape – You
have a thinner body, with minimal curves.

Characteristics: • Little difference between chest, waist and
hip measurements • Relatively equal body proportions • Weight gain is more prevalent in the
midsection/waist area • Rulers® do not bulk easily • Rulers® tend to have less hamstring
flexibility than Hourglasses® or Spoons® • Rulers® have a tendency toward low back

Apple Shape• For MenApple Shape – This type
of body shape means that the man has a larger chest and arms, with a small waist. Men with this body shape usually have a small butt and legs, and may look top heavy.
• For WomenApple Shape – You
have larger shoulders and larger breasts, with smaller thighs, and thinner or smaller hips and butt.

Apple Body Type Problem Areas and Characteristics:
• Apples are generally bigger on the top half of their bodies than on the bottom half.
• They commonly have slim hips and a large chest and stomach. Apples tend to gain weight above the waist or along the backside.
• The majority of apples are mesomorphs or endomorphs.

If you are an Apple' If you are an Apple, you should focus on aerobic training in order to slim down and lose body fat. By working on the lower half of your body, you can help balance out your chest and shoulders. Look to perform exercises that are low resistance and involve low repetitions. Here are some great exercises to try:
• Stair climbing • Walking on an incline • Running • Leg squats • Leg presses • Dead lifts

The Cone
Cone Body Type Problem Areas and Characteristics:
• Upper body is considerably larger than the lower body
• Stomach area may protrude • Cones® tend to have weak
abdominal muscles • Cones® tend to experience
