    Body Idea

My theme for this project is about religious people of thecommunity, because I find it very interesting how people keep theirbeliefs alive as well as their religion in todays world. How it helpsthem with their lives and how deep are their religious views? I'mgoing to explore the local churches in Medway and find out how

different the religious peoples views and thoughts are from eachother to get a better understanding of what I'm going to do.

I find Religious Portraiture very interesting for the styles of posing, posture, shadowing and lighting techniques as well as the meaningbehind these images. To do this I'm going to explore different paintings

and photographs to get a better idea for how I want my images to beand how to show the religious identity of the sitter.

Rembrandt's work interested me because he painted portraits for a lot

of religious people and I especially like the way he uses light. How heuses and positions a dim light that highlights the subjects face makingit the main focus of attention. Giving the images a wider thought towhat the meaning behind the painting could be. The use of darknesswith a single dim light could represent the sitter being moremysterious and secret. Or it could show how the smallest bit of light

could bring hope in such a dark place. It is an interesting technique I'mgoing to think about within this project because it also relates to thepeople within the images and religion. how your belief brings out yourenergy or it could symbolize a light from heaven touching the sittersface, or how even no matter how dark life gets your belief will alwaysshine through. In addition each image has a story and background and

a different meaning which is why I find religious portraiture veryinteresting.

    Carlo Dolci

I like Carlo Dolci's work because of how the use of lighting, shadowing and thedelicate posing and soft expressions of the sitters shows what kind of people theyare. It highlights their gentle grace and identity. Also the softness and purity of the

images show the gentle, loving and caring side of religion which is one of the mainreasons why so many people choose to stick to their religious beliefs. also from theuse of the gentle lighting and delicate expressions gives off a sense of hope whichis one of the main factors of religion and why Carlo Dolci's work and use oftechniques could give me some ideas of how I want to portray religious beliefs

    Jack Delano

Jack Delano was a photographer who shot many photographs of the different society's in Americaand one of those was religion in American society. I really like how he uses bright light and softtoning to express the religious spirit behind his images. I also like how each image has differentemotions to show the character of the person, how he photographs people of all ages, race anddifferent cultural backgrounds because it gives you the thought of how people of all types can beconnected by a belief. Which reminds me of how all kinds of people can be brought together byreligion.

    Edward Sheriff Curtis

Edward Sheriff Curtis was a photographer of the American West and of Native American people in the 1890s.Ithink his images are very interesting because the harsh toning and lighting of the images show the history andculture of these people beliefs, their expressions show their spiritual character and that they are strong.

I thought it would be interesting to look at a different religion because it shows the difference in another type ofreligious character and it gives me another idea of how I could direct my work.

    Julia Margaret Cameron

Julia Margaret Cameron was a British photographer who became known for her portraiture work. Ireally like her work because of how each image tells a completley diffrent story of a girl withinreligion. I also like her style of lighting and toning mixed with her models vacant expressions createa beautifuly haunting chill. I also really like how all her images are of beautiful girls yet the truemeaning of the images are more darker and twisted which show how something can bemissleading. It could even show how religion can just be a pretty mask with a dark truth hiddenbehind it. This style of photography I think is very interesting and it something im deffinatly going to

think about when shooting creating and creating my images.

    Julie

Exploring the different churches in the area I went to the cathedralwhere I met Julie(the blonde with the purple jacket) and her friendMargret outside by a bench. After talking to them I found out thatJulie worked with certain charity's (most with children in need) atthe cathedral which made me interested taking her picture for my

work. After asking her about her beliefs and religious views I foundout that she is a more structured Christian. She is more posturedand her movements and speaking indicated that she is a veryetiquette lady with strong religious beliefs. I did the shoot with herout the front of the cathedral because it is a place she likes sitsoften to relax and have a break with her friend Margret which

shows how friendship means a lot to her. It found it very interestinghaving Julie as my subject because I wanted to show her kind sideto her friendship and charity work but still maintain her structuredetiquette lady manner and I think I managed to achieve that.

    Allison

When exploring for different churches around Medway I came across the vines church in Rochester, where I met its only worker Allison. After talking to Allison I found out that she is a very down toearth Christian woman. Her religious believes are that she was born into it. Her whole life she haslived and was raised Christian and in her own words "she doesn't know better". However thereason she still has her beliefs is because of the happiness it gives her. Knowing that there'ssomething greater out there that will always know and understand her and how it brings peopletogether. She works at three jobs. The vines church, hope in the community(charity) and at theunited reform church. She is a very casual, which just completes here connection with religion.

I had Alison as my subject for task 3 and I wanted to she her personality along with her beliefs. So Iasked her to wear whatever she found most fit and she wore casual clothes which really suits hereasy going personality. I only used one light for this shoot and a black background because I wantedto show how she has been guided her whole life by her beliefs and by god, that no matter how darkit gets the light will always find her, and had her look into the light as if to seek for guidenss andadvice. I also had her cross necklace show in the image because it symbolizes how she's notmassively out spoken about her beliefs that to her its just a way of life, its apart of her and its not abig deal for her.

I think the shoot was successful and Allison worked perfectly with me to create the images Iwanted.

    Object Idea

For this Project my social issue is revolvedaround the controversy of the Fur industry.Fur has been a big issue for a long time now

and I find it very interesting how there are somany opinions about the issue. Why peoplethink it is wrong and the true meaning behindthe Fur industry. To get a better knowledge of

this issue I'm going to research both sides andlook at still life paintings and images to get abetter idea of how I want to portray this issue.

    International Fur Trade Federation

(IFTF) The IFTF is an organization with the aim of increasing awareness of the fur trade.

This is an article I read about it

    The IFTF Community

Many communities depend almost entirely on the fur trade, for instance in Kastoria, Greece where 80% of thepopulation is employed by the fur trade. In Russia, Canada, USA, Finland, Norway, Poland and Namibia, the furtrade helps to support indigenous and rural peoples in remote areas. Fur farms are particularly suited for remotenorthern climates where arable land is at a premium and a great many fur farms support families andcommunities in rural areas where the climate and environment make it difficult to farm many species. Fur farmsare often passed down from generation to generation along with the special skills needed. Fur farmers are proudof their tradition and of their animals.

Wild fur bearing animals have been always been hunted or trapped by man. The ability to hunt animals as well asforage for food is a defining characteristic of homo sapiens. Using fur from hunted animals as protection from theelements is an equally ancient characteristic. Mans earliest tools were created for hunting and skinning animals.

It goes without saying that the fur trade is an animal use industry, like the meat, dairy, leather, wool, cashmere and silkfarming industries and the medical research community. Clearly we have a duty to care for the animals used by the furtrade in a humane way. Fur farming and fur hunting and trapping are subject to local, national and international laws, regulations and standards. The International Fur Trade Federation and its members promote codes of practice thatmeet or exceed established standards for animal welfare.

    The Chinese Fur Trade

There are no penalties for abusing animals on fur farms in China, which is the world's largest fur exporter, supplying more than half of the finished furgarments imported for sale in the United States. Foxes, minks, rabbits, dogs, cats, and other animals pace and shiver in outdoor wire cages, with noshelter from driving rain, freezing nights, or the scorching sun.

Mother animals, who are driven crazy from rough handling and intense confinement and have nowhere to hide while giving birth, often kill theirbabies after delivering litters. Disease and injuries are widespread, and animals suffering from anxiety-induced psychosis chew on their own limbsand throw themselves repeatedly against the cage bars.

Before they are skinned, animals are yanked from their cages, thrown to the ground, and bludgeoned. Undercover investigators from Swiss AnimalProtection/EAST International found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hangthem up by their legs or tails to skin them.

When they begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals whostruggle too hard to allow a clean cut.

When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals' heads, their hairless, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they areskinned. One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare intothe camera.

    Willem van Aelst

Willem van Aelst was an amazing Dutch artist who specialized in still life paintings with flowers orgame. I really like his images becuase of his use of light,. Having one strong sousce of lightdarkening the rest of the room, creating depth and shadow and bolding the colours to showemotion and texture is really good. I also like how his work is quite controversial painting deadanimals and flowers showing a mix and balence betwee life and death I think is very interesting. hiswork has given me some ideas for my work and an idea for different techniques I can explore.

I really like his work how he has a a dim light creating stong detail, interestingshadows and bold textures. It creates a ver haunting mysterious thought to themind which I really like about the images. Also I think he has a very interestinglayout of his object, places items in unusual places with each creates a stongervisual impact which is something I will be thinking about with my project.

    Julia Sent

I came across Julia Sents work whilst looking on her website and I found someimages that really intrigue me. I really like her use of one direction lighting creatingdarkness around the rest of the image and giving the objects a deeper shadow andstronger detail. I also really like her mix off opposite objects together having manmade objects intertwine with flowers and mixing death and life to create someamazing still life images. Her use of objects and lighting has given me differentthoughts on how I can show my ideas.

    Roe Ethridge

I find roe ethriges still life images interesting because his images show that life and

death connection through mold and decay. However he uses a lot of light andcolour making the image and visual impact different from what you initially see inthe image. Perhaps he's saying its a part of life? or that beauty can be found in themost unexpected things. I also really like his image of the skinned fruit becauseworking on a theme about animals being skinned I think its interesting on how apiece of nature is viewed skinned. That the image is vied light and fresh where asnature is still a living things like animals.

Grant Cornetts still life (or as he calls it still death) images have a surreal aspect to them showingdead skinned animals with bright lighting and strong bold pop colors. His work is very controversialwhich is one of the things that drew me it it. However his work has given me different thoughts onhow I could project my theme giving me different ideas on how I can create my images and exploremy ideas into different areas.

    Critical appraisal

Both of my projects are about issues that I'm interested in. Also reading articlesand information about them gave me a better idea them.

I think my research supports my concept because its helpt me understand theissues more and helpt me to think of different techniques to show my ideas,However I do think it can be improved by looking at more sources to think ofdifferent approaches to show my ideas.

the choices behind my images are that I feel that through my research, visualreferences and exploring techniques, the images I have chosen show and translatemy ideas

Although I've managed to produce the work required for these projects. I'vestruggled with time management, which is something I'm going to improve on inthe future.

In the future I need to manage my time better so I can explore different

techniques and ways to show my ideas through my research. The biggest challenge on these units has been the availability and willing of people

to get photographed and research for articles and interviews to get better supportfor my ideas. In the future I plan to overcome them by spending more time in thebeginning so I can get as much done as I can.
