To the Barony of Coeur d’Ennui and the Canton of Axed Root, greetings from Akitsuki Yoshimitsu loyal servant to the Crown of Calontir, Vicar of Coeur d’Ennui.

I hope these words fi nd you warm and well, sitting comfortably by a crackling hearth, with hounds at your feet and your preferred libation close at hand.

As I put these words to paper, I am fi lled with thankfulness and anticipation - I am thankful for the successes of the year past, but more so the time we have spent with each other. I am fi lled with anticipation for our annual Yule Court gathering, but cannot help but think to the joys and victories that await us in the coming year...

A wise man from Chung Kuo once said, 耐心蚂蚱*. I shall embrace that wisdom - for now - set aside my anticipation and eagerness, and content myself by pouring another cup and raising it to your good health. Kampai!

From my home in the heart of the Boar Ring, at the hour of the dog on this 24th day of the eleventh moon of the twenty-sixth year of Heisei, AS XLIX.

F B O Unto the members of the Barony of Coeur d’Ennui, comes greetings from Edward Blythe, seneschal of this wonderful group.

Many things have happened since last the Snore was published. Back in October the barony hosted Crown Tourney and great fun was had by all. I want to personally thank all those that worked that event as everyone tells me that it went very smoothly. Special thanks to Her Ladyship Marie du Puy who was kind enough to step in as feast steward on relatively short notice.

I know I have said this before but I want it stated on the record, thank-you to all those that helped with my vigil and elevation. Special personal thanks to Sir Yoshi and Mistress Nicolete. Most of you have no idea how much work and patience they had leading up to that day.

They we had our annual Yule Court event at the beginning of December, again my thanks to everyone who helped out with the event. My personal thanks to Zaneta Baseggio from Axed Root, she helped me provide His Majesty a special lunch.

On a sadder note, the Barony lost one of its founding members. Lord Maximillian De Corsair will always be remembered by me for his funny stories and his love of hosting parties. Most of you may not have met him as he had moved on to follow his love of Science Fiction in the Des Moines

Science Fiction Club and Des Moines’ local Steam Punk group. I will miss him greatly.

I hope everyone’s holidays went without incident and look forward to seeing you at events in the future. Drive safe and be well.

In ServiceEdward Blythe, OPSeneschal, Barony of Coeur d’Ennui

Historical Tidbits #39

Tidbit #341. Nelson Mandela’s birthname, Rolihlahla, means ‘Troublemaker’.

Tidbit #342. Archimedes (287-212 BC) once made a mathematical discovery while at a public bath. He ran through the city naked to his house so he could write it down.

Tidbit#343. Rembrandt’s painting “Jacob III de Cheyn” has been stolen 4 times. It was returned anonymously each time.

Tidbit #344. The fi rst penal colony in Australia was founded on January 26th, 1788, by Capt. Arthur Phillip. Today, it is celebrated as ‘Australia Day’.

Tidbit #345. The Black Death (1347-1351) was actually three diff erent plagues; bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemia.

Tidbit #346. In 1578, the Buddhist leader was named teh “Dalai Lama” by Alton Khan, the Mongol Leader.

Tidbit #347. Staircases in medieval castles spiraled to the right, so right handed defenders can swing their swords freely while backing up them. Attackers would have to twist around badly to reach the defender.

Tidbit #348. No existing Etruscan documents are written in complete sentences.

Tidbit #349. The bra was patented in 1914 by New York socialite Mary Phelps. It was made with two handkerchiefs.

From the Populace

The Sling ThingAlaeddin Kilicarslan

Slingers were both a needed commodity and rare. This is based on several factors. Slings had more range than bows. When two armies met, if one side did not have slingers but only archers, normally the archers would be eliminated before they could fi re back at the opposing slingers. Another minor factor is that slings work just fi ne in the rain and the wet, period bows did not. The rarity of slingers comes from the fact that practically speaking, an army could not train slingers. They had to be recruited from groups that grew up using the sling. Its takes about 3 months to train an archer to entrée level on the fi eld. Its takes a great deal longer for a s linger to become profi cient.

Slings were used in most cultures throughout the world at one point or another. In the Greek armies they were essential. The Greeks were the fi rst to use lead cast bullets. This greatly added to the impact, penetration, and range of the weapon. The aerodynamics of the Greek bullets were close but not quite perfect. The Greek bullets were often inscribed with words or symbols. Popular ones were the Greek lightning bolt (death from afar), names of city states, and curses / profanity “TAKE THAT”. The Romans perfected the molded lead bullet aerodynamics and called the bullet a gland, which means acorn. With these they had even more eff ectiveness. The Romans invented a surgery tool to remove glands from bodies. I believe that in many battles slingers were the most feared and hated enemy. They normally struck fi rst, at the time that units were not yet in personal battle. Furthermore all slingers were skirmishers. They were not a unit that could be easily run down.

Winter Driving: Be Prepared

Recently during a return trip from an event, I pondered the necessity of a WINTER EMERGENY kit for my car. In fact I thought about it a lot during the 5 hours that I sat in my car that was stuck in a ditch. I came to a conclusion that this was not just a good idea. I need to get a kit!

I’ve done some looking on line and spoke to several people. I compiled a list of items that could have made my experience a bit more comfortable and in some cases may save a life. *Cell phone / Car Charger/ independent charger (I needed one on my trip! Thank you Ugi! )*Shovel*Windshield Scraper / small broom*Flashlight / extra batteries*Medium Jar candle or 3 small Jar Candles *Water (Do not drink alcohol, no matter how bored or mad you are at being stuck!)*Snack food/energy bars *Matches / Lighter. *Extra hat, socks, t-shirt, sweatshirt, sweat pants (Layers will keep you warmer)*Blanket /sleeping bag/ Space blanket (A couple space blankets will fi t in your glove box)*First aid kit and 2 day supply of your normal necessary meds. *Pocket knife*Sand or Salt (If you are very lucky you may just need a little traction)*Tow chain or rope (You may need more that a little traction)*Jumper cables *Road fl are/ glow sticks (They are not just for porta-johns!) *Florescent fl ag. *Emergency Whistle. *Book Light and Book. *Roll of TP or Box of Tissues

Remember this is a suggested list. If you can think of a substitute or an additional item, go for it.

I also have a few suggestions before you even leave.

First and foremost, CAR POOL! Besides saving money on gas, you can keep each other awake and warm. Tell someone not going with you your intended route. If you don’t show up at the event or at home it gives friends, family and the authorities an idea of where to look for you.

Stay in the car. While not a 5 star hotel, your vehicle will give you protection from the elements. Unless you can see a truck stop or convenience store from where you are don’t try to fi nd one. In a snow storm you can get turned around and lost or worse yet another driver may not see you until it is too late. Believe me they are trying to stay on the road and if it is snowing that is not an easy thing to do.

If someone stops and off ers you a ride, STOP AND THINK BEFORE YOU LEAVE YOUR CAR.

This is where you need to use your best judgment. If you decide to take the ride, leave a note with your vehicle of who you are, your phone number and where you are going. Better yet, call and tell someone if you are able. Include the license plate number of the vehicle you are getting in.

Well, this turned into a much longer article than I had thought it would. I truly hope that you never need to use any of this information.

Drive safe.

In Service,Baroness Gracye of Lokwode
