Executive Summary
The goal of today’s discussion is to present and request approval of recommended fiscal year 2018-19 room
and board rates for The Woods and NMU Traditional Housing Residence Halls.

NMU Board of Trustees action desired today – Receive Board of Trustee’s approval of fiscal year 2018-19
room and board rates.
Residence Life and Dining Services Modernization Project
University nears completion of four-year $85 million project to modernize housing, dining, and living and learning experience for students
Partnership with EdR to create “The Woods” consisting of six new attractive housing buildings
Modern, dynamic living-learning environment includes new classrooms, a tutoring center and open learning areas throughout the connectors
Modernize student dining facility
New housing facilities include connectors to protect students from adverse weather
New recreational area completed in the traditional halls called the “FitZone”
New trailhead connecting NMU to the Noquemanon (NTN) trail network next to the residence halls
Takeaway: $85 million investment to improve attractiveness of facilities, services, and living and learning environment.

FY2018-19 Room and Board Rate Recommendations Recommend overall room and board rate increase
of 3.00% for “The Woods” housing and 3.25% for the traditional housing facility
Supports the $85 million modernized new and renovated housing and dining facilities, living and learning environment
Includes 3% increase for The Woods, which is below maximum allowable under the EdR contractual agreement.
Includes 3.50% for the NMU traditional housing:
◦ Covers inflationary cost adjustments for personnel, utilities and supplies.
◦ Maintain sufficient funds for maintenance and repairs
◦ Maintains our NMU/EdR differential
Includes a recommended 3.00% increase in board rates for the constant pass meal plans
◦ Covers inflationary cost adjustments for cost of food, personnel, utilities and supplies
Maintains same relative competitive position in room and board rates
