Board HiGHLiGHtsrEcoGnition (continuEd) superintendent Hoffman talked about the Visions of unity contest. the annual event was held on March 28, 2011 at torrance Memorial Medical center. the Visions of unity contest was inspired by dr. Martin Luther king whose birthday comes one day after the contest’s deadline on January 14th. the theme revolves around the need for and the benefits of intercultural or interracial harmony. Local high school students submitted artistic entries for any of the following categories: literature, poetry, essay short story, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, drawing and graphic design/arts. three socal roc Media design students placed in the Graphic design category of the contest: first Place: alejandro Gonzalez from Eagle tree High school; second Place: amanda shields from redondo union High school; and third Place: Brandon fernandez from north High school. Board President Lucky and Board Member-at-Large Heidi ashcraft congratulated and presented each of the students with a Board certificate of Excellence. the artwork will be displayed at torrance Memorial Medi-cal center.

PatHWay to ProsPErity rEPort superintendent Hoffman reviewed the Pathway to Prosperity report (Harvard Graduate school of Education) with the Board. according to the report, the obligation of any society is to prepare its youth to be productive citizens. the united states is falling behind other nations and that many young adults are lacking the skills and work ethics required for jobs that pay a middle class wage. Georgetown university’s center on Education projects that the us economy will create a need for 47 million new jobs over a ten-year period ending 2018. nearly two-thirds of the workers needed will be required to earn a post-secondary education. the report notes that there is a low completer rate for those attending colleges and universities. the low completion rate could be attributed to the fact that students do not see the relevance of what they are learning and how the learning could be connected to their individual career goals.

uPdatE on BuiLdinG a ModErnization superintendent Hoffman reported that the modernization of Building a is moving forward. the medical and dental classrooms will be completed mid-May and the registra-tion office will be completed in June.

BudGEt rEductions for 2011/2012 the Board approved the budget reductions for 2011- 2102. Prior to the Board approval, dr. Hoffman reported that the Budget committee met over the last couple of months and prepared recommendations for a “worst-case scenario budget.” socal roc’s budget has been reduced by 24% during the past three years. despite of the severe budget reductions, socal roc has managed to continue to offer quality ctE programs that are part of a sequential pathway to high school and adult students in the south Bay. dr. Hoffman informed the Board that the worst-case budget scenario reductions will span over a two-year period. the first year period budget reduction is $523,000. if the economy does not turn around, approximately $444,000 in additional budget reductions will be accounted for 2012/2013, which is the second year period.
