BAM Nuttall Plant

• The following are the results from a survey conducted over a three month period from December 2012 until February 2013

• Staff were invited by e-mail to take part in the survey of which 49 have embraced the concept to date

• 25 questions were asked of which some had additional comments made against them

• Whilst the answers to the questions were useful we felt that the comments were more revealing

Do you consider that we have met / meet the needs of your site

Generally what we have asked for we have received, although going forward we need to agree finer details in order to meet required standards. Also some of our own equipment is not quite up to the standard that clients, beyond zero, environmental schemes such as considerate constructors expect

Page 3: bnp1

How well do we communicate with you and your team

I would like to know more about services on offer and the plant available for hire.(I see the weekly list but foremen dont.) Why do we not get directed to use internal plant instead of going outside the company to save a project £10 a week when the plant is sat there in the plant department.

Although more emphasis is needed in discussing the finer details

Sometimes difficult to get hold of.

Page 4: bnp1

Have you or your team ever approached our business purely to seek advice or guidance

Some great individual skills within the plant depot

Page 5: bnp1

Compared with our competitors is our service to you better, worse or about the same as them [1 of 2]

The service provided is really good but dramatically let down by the invoicing system. it is not a like for like comparison. Genysis bills before the charge is accepted

More open and honest approach to charges is required

Need to be much more competative on price and provide better value for money.

Page 6: bnp1

Compared with our competitors is our service to you better, worse or about the same as them [2 of 2]

We have both good points and bad points. I feel if the quality of the goods supplied were better then we would be better than the rest. Also its worth mentioning that other suppliers we use supply specific products and specialise in just that. therefore they do have some better supports in place to deal with any issues for example fitters, electricians who solely work on cabins and can therefore be called out almost straight away

Page 7: bnp1

Do you consider us as a "specialist contractor" or do you consider that you are able to buy in a comparable service from the open market

I think it would be unfair to say we specialise in one thing, however we obviously have a wider range of services at Bam plant.

No - for us you are unique

Specialist contractor for our drilling plant

Better accommodation units, service and pricing available on open market. Rail plant is not available in house so easier to deal direct with external hire company

Page 8: bnp1

Do you consider us as a "specialist contractor" or do you consider that you are able to buy in a comparable service from the open market [cont]

From questions on welding and fabrication, modifying items of plant or transportation of loads to site I have always found someone to help me out or be able to point me in the right direction. There is a wealth of knowledge available.

Page 9: bnp1

Do you consider that BAM Nuttall Plant brings value to the Company

I feel we should put more effort in to using bam plant and this in turn will allow bam plant to provide a better service. Its money in money!

Sometimes. Company looks more professional when our branded plant is used

Page 10: bnp1

We aim to provide a whole package to your project to facilitate an easier establishment wherever possible. Are you and your team aware of all the services that we can provide

When we get awarded new contracts we would like to do what BAM C do and simply place an order for an entire "site set up". Agents and PMs spend far to much time setting sites up at the start of contracts which is often a critical time when more can be easily won or lost.

Page 11: bnp1

Do you consider that we service your needs in relation to the provision of fabrication [1 of 2]I have never procured fabricated plant from BNPL

We tend to steer away as to comply with PUWER regs for modifying plant leads to issues.

Its not often i would ask for this service.

Not required this service but i'm aware it is available

Not utilised fabrication service

Page 12: bnp1

Do you consider that we service your needs in relation to the provision of fabrication [2 of 2] Most of the times told that fabrication yard is busy and go external.

The loss of the facility at Crayford has hampered this

Not used

Page 13: bnp1

Do you consider that we service your needs in relation to the provision of accommodation

First call is always the PD but they had never supplied on my last 3 jobs

Expectations continue to be raised and whats becoming the norm is now rendering the co fleet outdated very quickly.

Accommodation units require upgrading / improvement as compared to those from other suppliers.

The accomodation I have experienced are normally poor quality and require refurbishment

Page 14: bnp1

Do you consider that we service your needs in relation to the provision of haulage

Not utilised haulage service

Forsyth of Denny delivery and collection costs are not predictable

Believe that could challenged prices more for best deal

Page 15: bnp1

Do you consider that we service your needs in relation to the provision of cranes [1 of 3]

Transferring of crane drivers to the project causes friction as not all projects can afford to pay bonus, grease time, travel and overtime etc that some of the major projects can and do. Despite that fact that this is largely immorral given the scale of what they get it continues and results in Ill feeling and disciplinary issues [sickness/lateness etc]. Sites should pay a single rate for the crane inclusive of driver rates, just like we do with external hire companies.

Page 16: bnp1

Do you consider that we service your needs in relation to the provision of cranes [2 of 3]

Only for provision of Crawlers and Hiabs. Always external for mobiles (You don't have that capability do you?)

We generally use more mobile than crawler cranes therefor bam plant is very limited in what they can supply that fits the bill.

Other than HIABs and tail lifts etc we haven't needed to procure crane lifts yet.

I've always had to go to the open market as generally used mobile cranes

Page 17: bnp1

Do you consider that we service your needs in relation to the provision of cranes [3 of 3]

Not applicable

Not utilised crane service

Use mobile cranes 100% on this project

No crawler cranes required, only mobiles

Page 18: bnp1

Do you consider that we service your needs in relation to the provision of plant

Bam plant does not stock as much plant as it probably could do. Also i never know what you have in unless i ask.

Tower lights can be hired for a lesser price externally.

When sourcing plant, often the most economical plant is not provided. End up going direct to external plant hire companies.

Page 19: bnp1

Are you likely to recommend the use of our existing services to a colleague

Transport costs and sometimes hire rates often put sites off

Page 20: bnp1

Why has this not been publicised within the business?

Our business has recently been praised by the Scottish HSE in our approach to "total plant management" which we provided for sites in Glen Doe and Calliacher. Is this be a subject which you would like to know more about

Page 21: bnp1

We would like to be more proactive and assist your business in different ways. What other services would you consider that your business would benefit from

Cabin availability on site set up

A service that is competitive with the open market on service, quality and price - it needs to be value for money. Upfront costs - no hidden workshop charges that appear in the costs every month with no back up, and a month payment terms like all other suppliers.

Page 22: bnp1

We would like to be more proactive and assist your business in different ways. What other services would you consider that your business would benefit from [1 of 4]

Provision of machine operators. (We do this a bit already). Put a better structure to the electrical side of the business. Gazeway used to provide a more structured service in this respect although the Plant's electrician is very good, i'm not sure his time and priorities are always managed centrally. Offer a service to carry out routine plant and environmental inspections re fuel tanks/ storage etc.

Page 23: bnp1

We would like to be more proactive and assist your business in different ways. What other services would you consider that your business would benefit from [2 of 4]Tachograph Training and monitoring

More plant including smaller plant. more aware of what is available on a regular basis and better quality

More fitters available to help in the plant department and on sites

The plant department should get out and visit sites/offices and 'sell' BAM Nuttall Plant.

Page 24: bnp1

Providing Plant Coordinator and Inspection training to help our Foreman in compliance with NP4. Providing plant training to prevent use of poor external trainers

I would like to see the plant department look into the in house provision of roto telehandlers as these are becoming increasingly used and can be expensive to source externally.

Definitely plant CPCS training

Do you or your team utilise the information within the plant section of the intranet

I have only seen newsletters when distributed., People don't go looking for reference material really./ I tend to ask

I used the site and it could do with some updating/refreshing. the plant rates are for 2010.

To see any changes

Could do with much more information on the site

Page 27: bnp1

Do you or your team utilise the information within the plant section of the intranet

35% of respondents said that they have never used the site or did not know it existed

With regard to business development and to bring value to the work that you undertake, is there one direction or service in which you would like to see our business progress in the future [1 of 5]

Integrate further into the business

Be competitive within the work place rather than charge for the item and wait to be questioned about it later

Hire of mobile cranes.

More bam choice and better quality

Page 29: bnp1

I like the concept of the BAM brand. Using BAM plant we get the brand recognised and plant that meet the BAM cultural requirements.

A sonic rig would be good but expensive

Efficiency and value for money

Aspiration of one stop plant shop to minimize use and cost of external suppliers and maintain money in house.

Page 30: bnp1

A plant hire controller to oversee the hiring of external plant for BNL sites, not small hand tools but the larger plant from compressors upwards.

I would like to see a total plant management system

Management of internal hires and transfer of costs including compliance to NP9

On-site batching plants. More and more of our projects are requiring the use of mobile batching plants. With some investment I feel that having company owned, serviced and operated batching plants on site would differentiate us from our competitors and bring in some good income.

Value for money ! Add value to the business not just plant hire
