On Bagging Your Prey .....

I have never been much of a hunterand have never been involved in huntingfor just the right BMW. While we wereextremely happy with our 2004 330i ZHPand really enjoyed driving it, there were acouple downsides for me. First, it was afour-door and I’d rather have a coupe;second, it wasn’t an M3.

In the 32 years that have somehowwisked by since we bought our first BMW- a brand new 1977 Rubinrot 320i, we haveowned 14 BMWs. Unbelievably, in all thattime we have never owned an M car.

So, back to the hunting. For over ayear, I have been hunting for a 2005 or2006 M3. It couldn’t be just any M3 - ithad to be the right M3. While color wasnot necessarily an issue, if it was the rightcar, my preference was for Imola Red. Ialso was very picky, because it had to be a6-speed and not an SMG. No offense toall you SMG lovers, but from all that I hadstudied and read, I knew that I wanted a6-speed. The other quality, besides beingin excellent condition, that this M3 had tohave was that it had to have low mileage.

Every few days, I would check theBMW of Austin website for an M3 that fitthe bill. Like I said, this hunt had gone on

for over a year, so that was well over 100trips to the website with no success. Oh,they had M3s, but the mileage was toohigh, or the interior was a wild color, andalways, always, always they were SMGcars.

Then, in early February it happened.A new addition to the website grabbed myattention. It was a 2006 M3 with a 6-speed. And the color ... Imola Red! Wasit low mileage? If you call 7,800 miles ona 2006 low mileage, it was!! Oh, just oneminor issue. It had $15,000 of Dinangoodies on it, including big bore throttlebodies and a 3.91 differential. Guess I willlive with that :)

Although I have never really been ahunter, I know a prize trophy when I seeit. While we will really miss that 330i ZHP,I must admit that I didn’t even look backat her as we drove the M3 off of the BMWof Austin lot.

Until next time ....Glenn McConnell

Federal Motor TransportAuthority Confirms BMWGroup’s Leading Role In TheReduction Of Fuel ConsumptionBmw Press Club

By far the most efficient premium-c lass veh ic les on the Germanautomobile market are built by BMWand MINI. The official calculation offleet consumption carried out by theFederal Motor Transport Authority isce r t i f i ed conf i rmat ion of th i sexceptional position held by BMWGroup brands . Cur ren t s ta t i s t i cscalculated by the Flensburg-basedauthority show that BMW and MINIbrand vehicles newly registered inGermany during 2008 have an averagefuel consumption of 5.9 litres/100 kmand average emission levels of 158grams per km. Both levels lie wellbe low the average of a l l newlyregistered vehicles manufactured inGermany, which is at 165 grams.

The brand BMW reduces fue lconsumption by 16% within twoyears.

At brand level, too, BMW doesbetter than its main competitors in thepremium segment by significantlymore than ha l f a l i t r e o f fue lconsumption with an average level of160 g CO2/km. The vehicles of thenext best competi tor have a CO2emissions level of 16 grams more thanthe models of the brand BMW, withthe next competitor after this at a levelwhich is as much as 28 g higher thanthe brand BMW - equal to a whole litreof diesel. Between 2006 and 2008, thebrand BMW achieved a reduction infuel consumption of 16%, more than

doubling the reduction attained by thenext bes t p remium segmentcompet i to r. At the same, BMWvehicles are still well ahead of theircompetitors in terms of average engineoutput - clear evidence of the successof BMW EfficientDynamics.

The pos i t ive s i tua t ion of theBMW Group is complemented by thebrand MINI , which a t t a ined areduction of CO2 emission levels of206% between 2006 and 2008, with anaverage level of 139 g/km.

“This success i s impress iveaff i rmat ion of our ab i l i ty fo rinnova t ion and sus ta inab i l i ty,”explained Dr. Klaus Draeger, head ofdevelopment a t BMW. “With theemployed measures as wel l as amult i tude of further technologiesabout to be launched, the BMW Groupis exce l len t ly p repared fo r thechallenges of the future. Draeger:“With EfficientDynamics we willcomply with with the future EU C02-Targets for new cars. The payment offines is not an option for us.”

BMW and MINI fuel consumptionand CO2 emissions considerablybetter than those achieved by theaverage German automobile.

Federa l Motor Transpor tAuthority statistics show not only as ign i f ican t super io r i ty o f BMWEfficientDynamics compared withsimilar measures implemented byother premium vehicle manufacturers,bu t a l so the BMW Group’soutstanding position within the overallmarket. On statistic average a BMWor a MINI brand veh ic le burnssignificantly less fuel than the averagenew car produced in Germany.

Moreover, wi th regard to f l ee tconsumpt ion de te rmined by theFMTA, the BMW Group also beatsEurope’s l a rges t h igh-vo lumemanufacturer, taking it to level pegwith a number of car builders whoseproduc t por t fo l io inc ludes aconsiderably higher percentage ofsmall cars.

The BMW Group has also attainedcomparable results in other Europeanautomotive markets. In the UK, thebrand BMW has successfully reducedthe CO2 emissions of its models to aleve l averag ing 158 grams perkilometre. The BMW Group has alsoclearly improved on the respectivelevels of other premium car buildersin these countries.

Fleet consumption reduced by morethan 25 percent:

BMW Group exceeds ACEA

requirements.Consequently, also at an EU level

BMW and MINI ach ieve fue lconsumption and emission levelsbelow the overa l l average of a l lEuropean car manufacturers. Between1995 and the end of 2008 the BMWGroup cut fuel consumption of itsvehicles sold in Europe by more than25 percen t , even exceed ing therespect ive requirements for theirbrands s t ipu la ted by the ACEAcommitment (ACEA = Association ofEuropean Automobile Manufacturers).Consequently, the BMW Group isbetter prepared than other car buildersfor the even more stringent regulationsp lanned for 2012 and 2015respectively, these resulting from thefact that not all manufacturers havebeen able to achieve the aspiredreduc t ion in fue l consumpt ion .Therefore, as far as the BMW Groupis concerned, the payment of penaltiesas compensation for excessive CO2levels is not under discussion.

2009 The DiNG CompanyTech Sessionby Sandy McConnell

Saturday, February 21st, turnedout to be a good day for a terrific techsession, Tejas Chapter’s second eventof the new year.

Early birds met at What-a-Burgeron Ben Whi te Blvd . fo r a t as tybreakfast, plus a chance to catch upon all the news since our Post HolidayParty in January. Quite a few newfolks came out to meet us and get inon the fun activities of the day. It isalways a pleasure to get acquaintedwith new kindred spirits, plus takesome time to look over all the stellarBMWs and discuss the interestingdetails that make each of our bimmersunique and special.

After breakfast, we followed oneanother a shor t d i s tance to ourdes t ina t ion for the tech sess ion ,Aus t in ’s The DiNG Co . OscarMorales, proprietor of the shop andfriend of the Tejas Chapter, opened hisshop to us for a demonstration onPaintless Dent Removal. This was theprimary focus of this year’s event, butOscar also does clear bra installation, windsh ie ld ch ip repa i r and au todetailing. Almost 50 people filled upthe shop’s work space, as we gatheredaround to watch Oscar conduct a very

informat ive demons t ra t ion onproblematic spots on the hood ofWayne and Kathy El t r ingham’sotherwise flawless Z3.

Oscar, with his trained eye andyears of experience in the amazingpa in t less den t repa i r p rocess ,

masterfully worked out the dents insmall painstaking and minute steps. We were all certainly taken by surpriseand many filled with apprehensionperhaps, as Oscar actual ly beganheating the paint around the work areawith a blow torch! He explained that

the paint should only be warm to thetouch and if, in fact, it became too hotto touch, he would have gone too far! You’ll be relieved to know that he didnot overheat the paint at any pointduring the demonstration and no onehad to revive Wayne or assist him upoff the floor! When we all caught ourbreath again and Oscar had

successfully worked out the dents, hethen took a substantially gritty rubbingcompound to the spot he had justf ixed! He rubbed in appropriatecircular motions, but again, we werefixated on the work and holding ourbreath, as he took it from ok, to worse,

to perfect and shining like glass again! How amazing!

A few years ago Tejas Chapterwatched as Oscar demonstrated hissk i l l s in ano ther a rea , when heinstalled a 3M Clear Bra kit on DaveGumaer’s immaculate Estoril Blue MRoadster. Z series BMWs have verychallenging curves and lines comparedto the average vehicle in for the job.Oscar took all that in stride however, and the roads te r looked grea tfollowing the completed installation. The “bra” b lends r igh t in soamazingly, that it’s not an eyesore inany way. This year Oscar did anadditional demonstration, applyingsome of the same type product as aprotectant on the door edges of Wayne& Kathy’s Z3. That seems l ike alogical and strategic location for theproduct; one that I hadn’t consideredbefore....

Oscar has proven to be a really

good sport, both this year and in thepast. Though he is normally open forbusiness on Saturday and would havepreferred doing our event on Sunday,he agreed to adjust and do the eventfor us on our event day. At the timeof the event mentioned above, Oscarhad arranged for our tech sessionbefore some vicious October hailstorms in the Austin area, so needlessto say they’d been very busy with abarrage of hail storm victims needingdent repairs after the storms. Glennand I too, had to get a new roof on ourhome because of those hail storms, butour sweet rides had both been safe inthe garage when the skies let loose!Since then we have had an occasionwhere we needed Oscar’s expertise ona hail damaged bimmer, so we canattest to the fact that Oscar doeswonderful work!

After our time with Oscar, weheaded out for a superb lunch at theSalt Lick, enjoying a scenic driveenroute. It was another event to beremembered for a long time and ourthanks go to Oscar for taking timefrom his busy work day and to RogerWilliams for a well thought out andplanned event.

See you next month for the ItalianTour!

BMW Concept 5-Series GranTurismoBMW Press Club

With the BMW Concept 5 SeriesGran Turismo, BMW opens a newsegment in the automobile market byincorporating BMW driving dynamics, quality, and style into a new type ofvehicle. As was the case with theBMW X5 as the world’s first SportsActivi ty Vehicle and the BMW 1Series, to this day the only rear-wheel-drive premium small car, BMW isaga in deve lop ing a new marke tsegment and giving additional drivergroups the unique experience of TheUltimate Driving Machine.

The BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo is the production-destinedrendition of the Progressive ActivitySedan (PAS) development idea. Forthe f i r s t t ime , th i s concep t ca rcombines the looks and appearance ofa sporty BMW Sedan, a modern Sports

Activity Vehicle, and a classic GranTur i smo. Perhaps the mos touts tanding fea ture of the BMWConcept 5 Series Gran Turismo is itscombina t ion of s ty l i sh qua l i ty,luxurious comfort, and remarkableconvenience.

As the name indicates, the BMWConcept 5 Series Gran Turismo is theideal car for long journeys while stilloffering a dynamic driving experiencein everyday traffic or short jaunts. Thedes ign of the body presen ts thecharacter of a BMW dedicated tosporting performance.

A bri l l iant concept for modernmobility.

The BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo conveys modern mobility byfocusing on the requirements of adiscerning driver who appreciatesfirst-class ambience and enjoys all thebenefits of a flexible interior.

With this in mind, the BMW

Tejas TraxMarch 2009 19

continued on page 20

Concept 5 Ser ies Gran Tur i smoprojects an individual flair oriented toeach occupant ’s needs andpreferences . Such f la i r makes i tpossible to win over new driver groupsfor BMW. The BMW Concept 5 SeriesGran Turismo is an attractive offer tothe driver wishing to retain classicfeatures such as presence, luxury, andquality while living a versatile andspontaneous lifestyle.

The interior of the BMW Concept5 Series Gran Turismo combinesspaciousness, personal luxury, and anexquisite choice of materials to providea first-class experience. The entrywaysallow ergonomically ideal access to allseats, the driver-oriented design of thecockpit, in typical BMW fashion, suggests sporty performance, and theslightly elevated seating positionpromotes good outward visibility.

Unique design in the rear providesa modern, generous atmosphere. Withthe rear seats adjustable fore-aft by upto 4”, both legroom and the seat anglemay be set to the preferences of thepassengers. Headroom is virtually thesame as in the BMW X5, giving driverand passengers a genuinely comfortableexperience.

Luxury, comfort, and impressiveusefulness.

With the rea r sea t s s l id a f t ,legroom will be roughly the same asin the BMW 7 Series and luggagecapacity amounts to 15.1 cubic feet. With the rear seats moved forward andthe rear bulkhead partition opened, luggage capacity increases to almost20 cubic feet. Even in this position, legroom in the rear still meets thedemands for a full-size sedan.

After completely folding the rear

seats as well as the bulkhead partitionleading to the luggage compartment, large and bulky objects may be loadedin to the rear. With the bulkheadpartition stowed in the floor of theluggage compar tment , maximumluggage capacity becomes nearly 58cubic feet. For convenience, the rearseats fold by pushing a button on thes ide pane l o f the luggagecompartment. The option to fold downthe rear seats individually provideseven greater flexibility.

Optimum visibility thanks to theelevated seating position.

In the front seats, both driver andpassenger benefi t from a sl ightlyelevated seating position. This “semi-command” seating position offers anoptimum outward view, much like inthe BMW SAV models.

Elegant interior design accents theunique feeling of space.

In the cockpit, the horizontallyarranged, cascade-like surfaces finishedin different materials strongly accentuatethe width of BMW’s new concept car.The displays and controls are groupedaccording to their functions. Through itsdesign, the instrument panel enhancesthe very good visibility provided by theelevated seating position, giving thedriver a clear view from above of thecontrol elements for the lights and thestart/stop button on the middle level. Also important in this context, thehorizontal orientation of the entirecockpit accentuates the generouscharacter of the interior.

The trim bar stretching out as anarch through the entire width of the

Tejas TraxMarch 2009 20

instrument panel continues into thedoor pane ls . The in te rac t ion ofascending and descending l inesthroughout the in ter ior opt ica l lyconnects the front and rear seats. Alll ines and surfaces, f inished withsophisticated materials, taper outbehind the rear seats, and give theinterior its comfortable and spaciouscharac te r. The f low of l ines ,un in te r rup ted by the B-p i l l a r,emphasizes the length of the interior.Last but not least , the feeling ofspaciousness is augmented by thecenter console, which extends all theway to the rear.

Special concept materials and colorswithin the interior.

The colors and materials for thein te r io r fu r ther enhance theimpression of personal luxury and theinterplay of surfaces and lines. Allsur faces wi th in the in te r io r a ref in i shed in h igh-qua l i ty na tura lleather, the surfaces on the seats andthe door armrests form a “comfortzone” in Glacier White leather. Thiscreates the impressionof a b r igh t b randextending around thelower section of theinstrument panel, thecool and elegant colorg iv ing par t i cu la remphas i s to thegenerous andluxurious feeling ofspace.

The br igh tsur faces in thecomfor t zone a re

surrounded by a dark, warm reddishbrown, this special color referred toas Copper Brown providing a smoothlink to the exterior paintwork.

The impression of modern luxuryis further enhanced through the use ofauthentic materials such as polishedbillet metal and ceramic elements. Thequality of the interior finish is borneout particularly by the solid wood trimwi th meta l in lays ex tend inggenerously across the instrumentpanel.

Instrument c lus ter wi th co lordisplay in black panel technology.

The instrument cluster of theBMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismois a high-resolution color display inblack panel technology presenting thefour round instruments in traditionalsports car s tyle , including s ta tusd i sp lays , nav iga t ion da ta , andinformation from the Check Control.

Introduced in the new BMW 7Series, black panel technology ensuresprecise and sophisticated presentationof the instruments and displays. InRest mode the entire panel forms ahomogeneous black surface. Whenactivated, the numbers on the circular

The iDr ive Cont ro l Disp layscreen, arranged on the same plane asthe instrument cluster, is integratedinto the dashboard as a free-standingelement. The Control Display formsone common design unit with the blackpanel and houses the controls for theaudio system and climate. For opticalpurposes, this unit is separated by thehorizontal trim bar with its centralventilation grid and a storage box. Inthe BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo, the special look of blackpanel technology continues into thecenter console: dynamism in typicalBMW s ty le combined wi th theelegance of a Gran Turismo.

Exterior DimensionsThe body design of the BMW

Concept 5 Ser ies Gran Tur i smoensures an exc i t ing ba lance ofinnovation and tradition. The conceptcar stands out as a genuine BMW, asthe overall look of the exterior clearlyalludes to the extension of BMW’smodel portfolio made by this uniqueautomobi le . Indeed , the BMW

Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo entersnew terrain in the history of TheUltimate Driving Machine.

In i ts exterior dimensions theBMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismofits perfectly between the BMW 7Ser ies and BMW’s var ious SAVmodels. Its length of 196.8" is secondonly within the BMW model range tothe 7 Series, while the car’s height of61.2" is exceeded only by BMW’s Xmodels. The width is 74.8” and thewheelbase is 120.9”.

The characteristic look of theBMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismoresults from the car’s proportions - thelong hood, long wheelbase, and thegreenhouse moved aft bear out theathletic characteristics of a BMW.These features are combined withelements that highlight the qualities ofthe new concept; the large passengercell bears testimony to the luxurious, versat i le interior. The coupe-l ikeroofline extends into the spoiler at therear, and represents the spor t ingelegance of a Gran Turismo.

Paintwork in Fluid Cuprite, a newcolor developed specifically for thisconcept car, again highl ights theunique design of the BMW Concept 5

Series Gran Turismo.The ex t remely f inesur face f l a i rreminiscent of liquidmeta l impress ive lymodels the surfaces onthe body through itspowerfu l con tours .And to p rov ide ana p p r o p r i a t esupplementary touch,the brake calipers and

Tejas TraxMarch 2009 22

the inner surfaces on the exhaust gastailpipes are finished in a new colorcalled Copper.

Front view with forward-pushingmotion.

The f ron t v iew of the BMWConcept 5 Series Gran Turismo ischaracterized in particular by thestrong presence of the low-slungBMW kidney grille, the large lower airintake, and BMW’s characteristic dualround headlights. The BMW kidneygrille is slanted slightly forward, itsupper edge marking the foremost pointon the body. The kidney gril le isfurther accentuated by surroundingsurfaces.

All contour lines flowing along theengine compartment out of the fendersaim at the kidney grille at the front ofthe car. The air intake, in turn, is lowerin the middle where it extends beneaththe kidney grille. And last but not leastthe contours on the headlight units taperout smoothly towards the middle of thecar.

Just as the size of the BMW kidneygrille demonstrates the engine’s need for

cooling air, the power dome in themiddle of the engine compartment lidemphasizes the sheer muscle of theengine itself. The outer flanks of thehood facing downward form a cascade-like contour together with the widelyflared wheel arches, giving the frontview of the BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo a wide and powerful look.

The frontal impression is furtherenhanced by the foglamps positioned atthe outer edges of the lower air intake, while the aluminum bars separating thetwo outer elements on the air intake andextending beyond the foglamps furtherenhance the look of width at the front.

Dual round headlights typical ofBMW; new LED corona rings.

The dual round headlights typical ofa BMW come with new contour lines anda new technology for the daytimerunning lights on the BMW Concept 5Series Gran Turismo. Slanted to adistinctive angle and extending far intothe fenders, the headlight units arehighlighted by surrounding bars, theheadlights themselves cylindrical inshape bordering at the top on a matteheadlight cover. This emphasizes theunique look of the front end, with itsclear, penetrating focus. Apart from the

5-Series Gran Turismocontinued from page 21

Tejas TraxMarch 2009 23

turn signals, the new LED corona ringsfor the daytime running lights generatebright, even light.

Side-view: coupe-like roofline andwaistl ine emphasizing the sleekelegance of the car.

Appropriate lines along the sidecreate the harmonious symbiosis of thefront end, the side view and the rearsection on the BMW Concept 5 SeriesGran Turismo. The dominating featurefrom the side is the character line of aBMW extending from the outer edge ofthe headlights and moving back at thesame level as the door handles along theentire length of the car, rising up slightlyin the process and continuing into thecontours of the rear light clusters.

The equally striking sil l- l inecontinues into the upper edge around theair intake at the front and the contour inthe rear diffuser, this interplay of thewaistline and the sill-line making the carlook lower and more crouched down onthe ground and emphasizing the dynamicwedge of the body.

The unusual presence of a coupe-like roofline adds character to the car’sdesign and is a visual expression of thefeatures and qualities the car has to offer. With its sporting flair, the BMWConcept 5 Series Gran Turismo leaves apositive impression through its spaciousand generous interior.

The BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo comes with frameless doors, afeature of particularly sporting cars nowto be admired for the first time on a 4-door BMW.

The door cutout bars are anotherspecial feature, forming one unit acrossboth entry areas and thus correspondingwith the overall harmonious flairconveyed by the door panels inside the

symbolize the sporting potential of thecar: The BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo showcases 21-inch light-alloywheels offering excitement and elegancethrough their unique multi-spoke design.Yet another feature of particularlysporting cars the short overhang, whichkeeps the fenders low and long. Thiseffect is further intensified by thehorizontal lines of the car borne out bythe waistline as well as the joint andcontour line on the engine compartment.

The “Hofmeister kink” re-interpretedin modern style.

The design of the side windows alsopresents a re-interpretation of a classicBMW feature: on the BMW Concept 5Series Gran Turismo the windowsurrounds are one-piece, this three-dimensional shape giving the aluminumframe a sophisticated and dynamic lookaround the famous “Hofmeister kink”.The exterior mirrors also represent a newdesign element, with the mirror baseforming part of the foot of the A-pillarsand thus blending harmoniously with thefender of the car.

The BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo offers a new rendition of the“Hofmeister kink.” In this case the innerradius of the “kink” is particularly large, the outer radius strikingly small. Thiscreates an exciting contrast to theroofline moving down smoothly andgently to the rear.

Powerful rear design. The design of the rear end offers

a striking impression of this uniqueconcept with its exceptional strengthsand features. The two outer roofline

as well as the shoulder lines mergeinto the spoiler on the tailgate, givingthe rea r in i t s fas tback s ty le asur rounding l ine whi le adding acompact touch to the car.The rear view of the BMW Concept 5Ser ies Gran Tur i smo i s sp l i t byhorizontal lines highlighting the widthand powerful stance of the car. Therear reaches its full width around thewheel arches, with exhaust tailpipespositioned far to the outside alsodirecting the eyes to the wheels. Thedistinctive light edge in the lower partof the bumper adds a further touch, while a diffuser finished in blackmarks the gap be tween the rea rvalence and the road.

Impressive versatility: two tailgates inone.

With the rear panel of the carappearing to start directly beneath therear light clusters in order to convey a

sporting impression, the low loading sillon the BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo is not visible at first sight.

Another innovation crucial to themission of the car is only recognizablewhen opening the rear hatch: To stowluggage, the bi-modal trunk may beopened in traditional fashion or theentire hatch may be opened to load largerobjects. When only the lower section isopened, one loads the luggagecompartment as in a sedan, benefitingin the process from the low loading sill.Using the trunk in this way keeps theinterior of the vehicle from beingdisturbed by outside climate effects.

The L-shape of the rear light clusterstypical of a BMW is re-interpreted onthe BMW Concept 5 Series GranTurismo, with the two rows of lightfollowing a dynamic sweeping motion. The rear lights extend far into the sidepanel, emphasizing the full width of theBMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismoeven at night.

The rear light clusters are connectedby a chrome bar continuing from the
