ON DESIGN AND INDIVIDUALITY.

URBAN DESIGN, SPORTY CONTOURS.

Freddie Lund, .

THE EPITOME OF DIVERSITY, MODERNITY AND FREEDOM; FULL OF VARIETY AND NEW IDEAS; CONTINUOUSLY ON THE MOVE AND ALWAYS UP TO DATE. THIS PERFECTLY SUMS UP THE NEW BMW SERIES SPORTS HATCH – AND THE MODERN LIFESTYLE OF ITS DRIVERS.

The BMW Series Sports Hatch radiates lust for life. Its dynamic design, compact dimensions and muscular look make it the perfect urban explorer. At the rear, the powerfully designed wheel arches emphasise the classic BMW rear-wheel drive. Shapely contours then steer the observer’s eye forward to the vehicle’s unmistakable front, where sloping lines accentuate the headlights to give the BMW a look of pure determination. However, it’s not solely the design that makes the new BMW Series Sports Hatch impossible to overlook. The extraordinary interior features a generous

amount of space and plays host to the innovative BMW Effi cientDynamics and BMW ConnectedDrive technologies for exceptional driving pleasure. The unique feeling of being behind the wheel of the new BMW Series Sports Hatch is matched only by a series of additional design characteristics. Choose from two models, Urban and Sport, which encompass an array of exterior and interior features. Both models provide the same level of comfort and deliver the same dynamic ride, but visually they’re absolutely distinctive. That’s why the new BMW Series Sports Hatch is perfect

for Adam and Freddie Lund. Both lead active lifestyles and are equally

driven, but the two brothers have distinctly different personalities. The

same can be said about their cars: it’s all about character.

motivates you to drive better – or in this case,

more effi ciently.

Freddie Lund:

So, as the driver, I ultimately determine how effi cient my car is?

Yes and no. Basically, BMW leaves it up to the driver to decide how much they want to modify their driving style. However, when they activate the ECO PRO mode, the vehicle characteristics also change. For example, there’s a feature that stops the automatic air conditioning and the seat heating from running on the highest setting. But the BMW Series Sports Hatch can still perform at full power. Fuel effi ciency remains a top priority at all times, thanks to a range of standard BMW Effi cientDynamics technologies.

BMW EfficientDynamics12 13

THE REQUIREMENTS ARE CLEAR: WE HAVE TO CONSERVE RESOURCES, LOWER EMISSIONS, ACT SUSTAINABLY. SOUNDS SENSIBLE. BUT WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE OUR DRIVING PLEASURE? QUESTIONS ABOUT BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS POSED BY ADAM AND FREDDIE LUND.

Adam Lund: Effi ciency and dynamics… isn’t that a contradiction?

On the contrary: BMW Effi cientDynamics combines both of these things. This technology package lowers emissions but still ensures impressive driving dynamics. This is best exemplifi ed by the new BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engines. They contribute towards an outstanding performance to fuel consumption ratio that is the best in its class.

Freddie Lund: What makes the new BMW Series Sports Hatch more effi cient than comparable vehicles?

The driver holds the key to greater fuel effi ciency by driving in a more economical manner. BMW developed the ECO PRO mode for this reason, which enables fuel consumption to be reduced by up to %. It gives the driver feedback and recommendations on their driving behaviour. In this mode, what is known as the bonus mileage is displayed in the On-Board Computer. It tells the driver how many miles they have gained by following the tips given. Plus if you opt for the Black panel display, the rev

counter also includes an Effi cientDynamics

display. It shows how far the accelerator pedal

should be depressed to achieve effi cient

acceleration.

Adam Lund: It sounds a bit like a computer game.

Yes, you could compare it to scoring points in a

computer game. At BMW, as you know, driving

pleasure is a priority. If something’s fun, it

Among other features, this technology package includes the highly effi cient BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engines as well as the Auto Start-Stop function, which is now also available in conjunction with the new optional Eight-speed automatic transmission. Another highlight is the Drive Performance Control button. Along with the new ECO PRO mode, it also provides the Sport, Sport+ and Comfort modes.

At the BMW Group Research and Innovation Centre in Munich, researchers concentrate not only on future BMW vehicles but on the future itself. Their research revolves around the most fundamental of questions. How and where do we live and work? What are our needs and how do they impact upon our environment? The goal is to gain a profound understanding of the present and the future – enabling us to draw conclusions about our mobility needs and aesthetic sensibilities. This understanding infl uences the overall creative concept – as evidenced in the new BMW Series Sports Hatch. The designers at BMW also draw inspiration for their creativity from workshops

about art, craftsmanship and new materials. The materials examined here are not just the common ones typically found in vehicles. The point of working with synthetic materials from the sports goods industry, for example, or with natural materials such as algae, is to provide fresh and unusual approaches. The fi rst task is to understand the unique characteristics and potential of new materials.

In collaboration with artists, the BMW designers create sculptures out of stone, fold paper origami fi gures and study the fi ne art of calligraphy. They laminate wood and emboss leather. In part, the workshops are about acquiring knowledge of

materials and their natural limits – the maximum pliability of wood, for example. They also serve as sources of inspiration.

The fruits of this research fi rst appear before the general public in the form of concept cars. The BMW Concept Coupé, for example, refl ects an investigation of the origami folding technique. While this concept car from pays homage to BMW’s Mille Miglia victory in , it also demonstrates the possible future of lightweight construction with an origami-like treatment of sheet metal. The GINA Light Visionary Model from explores the possibilities of an outer skin made from elastic material. Stretched over

a movable frame, the fabric skin is seamless and yet has visible stitching. The various functions concealed underneath only become visible when activated. Work on concept cars also marks the beginning of a dialogue with the engineers. Together with the designers, they examine technical feasibility and consider various production methods. In some cases – like with the convex and concave deformation of body sheets – this is the key to making decisive progress.

Many ideas developed by these pioneering designers have been implemented in the new BMW Series Sports Hatch. Like the

materials found in the interior or the way different surfaces are joined together. The instrument panel and interior trim are merged in a fl uid and overlapping fashion. This ‘layering’ design creates a modern and light sense of space.

Thanks to their work with natural materials and in art workshops, the creative minds at BMW Advanced Design are able to keep evolving new ideas that often feature in subsequent BMW production models.

BMW CONNECTED DRIVE – FOR MORE CONVENIENCE, INFOTAINMENT AND SAFETY.Wherever your journey may lead, you can stay in touch with BMW ConnectedDrive. Its innovative functions can provide optimum integration between the driver, vehicle and the world outside – any time and any place.

Convenience. These ingenious BMW ConnectedDrive innovations include helpful devices which make handling the vehicle even more comfortable, so you’re always that much more relaxed when you’re in your BMW.

Reversing Assist camera. Shows the area behind the vehicle clearly in the Control Display. Interactive guidelines show, for example, whether the parking space selected is large enough for the vehicle.

Comfort Access. This system allows you to unlock, lock and start your BMW without inserting or having to hold the key in your hand. When you have the remote control on your person, simply touch the door handle or boot lid and the BMW unlocks or locks as required by transmitting an identifi cation signal to the car. Similarly, a touch of the Start-Stop button is all it takes to start the engine.

Real Time Traffi c Information (RTTI). Provides a precise account of current traffi c situations in real time. The information is presented on the Navigation map by using a colour coding system indicating the fl ow of traffi c. Road networks are divided into distances as short as m for superior accuracy and dependency. Information is automatically updated every minutes allowing the driver to monitor whether the traffi c situation is improving or worsening. The system also recommends for or against alternative routes based on the potential time saving benefi ts.

Park Assist. This driver assistance system makes parallel parking easier. When travelling at speeds below mph, the system measures any parking spaces the vehicle passes. When a suitable space has been identifi ed, the Park Assist function takes care of the steering, while the driver continues to operate the accelerator and brake pedals – supported by acoustic signals and instructions in the Control Display.

Page 16: BMW 1 Series

Infotainment. Infotainment features bring your world into your BMW. Whether it be your offi ce, music collection, your social networks or daily news

and weather forecasts. Information that matters to you is available at your fi ngertips, keeping you informed and entertained throughout your journey.

BMW ConnectedDrive30 31

Mobile Application Preparation. With this optional feature, users can download the Mobile Application Preparation iPhone application free of charge. With this app you’re no longer limited to listening to local radio. Using the iDrive system, you can select web radio stations from around the world. You can call up the latest status reports from your Facebook and Twitter accounts and view your iCalendar on the vehicle Control Display.

Enhanced Bluetooth telephone functionality. From now on, you can use the time you spend in your car even more effectively. Thanks to the Enhanced Bluetooth telephone functionality and the intelligent integration of selected compatible business mobile phones¹, Offi ce functions such as dates, tasks, contacts or SMS and email messages can be shown on the Control Display, via the Bluetooth connection, or they can be read aloud via the audio speakers, using the narrator function (if the vehicle is also equipped with Voice Control). Thanks to Bluetooth audio streaming², wireless playback of music fi les via selected compatible Bluetooth devices¹ is no problem either.

USB audio interface. With the USB audio interface and an original iPod USB cable, the album cover art for the track being played can be shown in the Control Display (the cover art display function is also available for other devices). The USB audio interface also allows the connectivity software in your BMW to be easily updated, so new compatible mobile phones and music players become fully operational after updating with a USB memory stick.

Internet. In-car browsing of the World Wide Web is now available with the optional Internet feature. Websites are displayed in the high resolution vehicle Control Display with the iDrive controller doubling as a mouse for on-screen navigation. The connection operates via the built-in vehicle SIM card and thus no external mobile device is required for operation. All data costs for a three year term are included as part of the optional BMW Assist package. The Internet service is only available when the vehicle is stationary.

Safety. These BMW ConnectedDrive services are safety technologies that make a signifi cant contribution to reducing the risks that road traffi c poses to BMW drivers and their passengers.

Speed limit display. Keeps the driver informed of the maximum permissible speed of the road being travelled. A camera ‘reads’ relevant signs above and beside the road, and compares the information with the speed limits recorded in the Navigation system. The speed limit is then displayed in the instrument cluster and the optional Head-Up Display.

Park Distance Control (PDC). This allows for easy parking and manoeuvring in confi ned spaces. Acoustic signals and a visual indicator in the Control Display advise you when the front or rear of the vehicle is approaching an object. Distances are measured by ultrasound sensors in the bumpers.

Lane departure warning. At speeds above approximately mph, the Lane departure warning system registers lane markings ahead, up to a distance of metres. If the vehicle deviates from the lane of travel without the use of indicators the steering wheel vibrates as an alert to the driver.

High-beam Assistant. No unintentional dazzle – the optional High-beam Assistant uses an image sensor to recognise oncoming traffi c and changing light conditions. When the system is active it automatically switches the High-beam on and off.

Information on compatible devices can be found at www.bmw.com/bluetooth Details of compatible phones enabled for Bluetooth Audio Streaming is available at

BMW EFFICIENT DYNAMICS TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS ON

THE NEW BMW SERIES SPORTS HATCH.

Through tireless research, BMW is consistently producing innovations for the energy effi cient mobility of the future. The BMW Series Sports Hatch like every BMW, incorporates many aspects of the multi-award-winning BMW Effi cientDynamics technology as standard. These technologies interact perfectly to reduce fuel consumption and CO

emissions while maximising performance and dynamism. Less fuel, more driving pleasure – a paradox

that BMW has resolved once and for all. For the benefi t of the environment and the enjoyment of the driver.

Auto Start-Stop. Switches the engine off without affecting other functions whenever the car comes to a rest, at traffi c lights for example, saving fuel and reducing emissions. The engine is restarted automatically within a fraction of a second.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. In the i, i and i petrol engines, this package of innovations combines a TwinScroll turbocharger with VALVETRONIC, Double-VANOS and High-precision direct injection. This new exhaust gas TwinScroll turbo charger effi ciently recaptures the energy present in the exhaust through the use of a double-fl ow exhaust system. In the d, d, d and d diesel engines, common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger are combined with Variable Vane Geometry. This signifi cantly reduces the fuel consumption of the BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol and diesel engines – while noticeably increasing performance across all engine speeds.

Brake Energy Regeneration. The alternator disengages automatically when the battery is fully charged, only re-engaging when the battery needs charging. This reduces the demands on the engine, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. In addition, when the car is braking or coasting, the system automatically engages the alternator to charge the battery, recycling energy that would otherwise be wasted.

Electric Power Steering (EPS). In comparison with conventional hydraulic steering systems, the electric power steering support only uses energy as needed to assist steering. When a steering wheel is static, for example when driving on a straight road, the electric motor is inactive.

ECO PRO. This mode enables fuel consumption to be reduced by up to % depending on your individual driving style. For example, ECO PRO will advise the driver to accelerate less aggressively, the optional eight-speed Sport automatic transmission shifts even faster to higher gears and the automatic air conditioning is subject to energy-optimised settings.

Optimum Shift Indicator. Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective ways to save fuel. A small visual display on the vehicle’s instrument panel shows the optimum gear for a more fuel-effi cient driving style.

Eight-speed automatic transmission. The close spacing of gear ratios in the optional eight-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic, enables maximum use of the optimum rev range, lowering fuel consumption and enhancing shift comfort.

BMW d.

This BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine is the top diesel

model. It produces an exceptional output of hp (kW) from its

. litre capacity. It combines common-rail direct injection and a two-stage

turbocharger with Variable Vane Geometry. A maximum torque of Nm

within a range of , and ,rpm ensures sensational power delivery

and acceleration from to mph in just . seconds. Its top speed is

mph. BMW Effi cientDynamics technologies contribute substantially

towards its exceptionally effi cient average fuel consumption rate of just

.mpg.

BMW d.

The BMW d’s TwinPower Turbo . litre four-cylinder diesel engine delivers an incredibly smooth and dynamic performance. It features an impressive torque of Nm between , and ,rpm and an output of hp (kW). Its combination of common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger with Variable Vane Geometry yields a top speed of mph and propels the BMW from to mph in . seconds. Steady injection pressure combined with additional BMW Effi cientDynamics technologies result in an exceptionally effi cient average fuel consumption fi gure of just .mpg.

BMW d.

This BMW TwinPower Turbo engine accelerates powerfully, fl exibly and smoothly with an output of hp (kW) and a maximum torque of Nm. It owes its success to the common-rail direct injection and a

turbocharger with Variable Vane Geometry. From a standstill it reaches mph in . seconds and a top speed of mph. What’s more, on average this highly effi cient engine consumes just .mpg.

BMW d.

With a capacity of . litres, this engine reaches its full hp (kW) output both powerfully and elastically. The BMW vehicle accelerates from to mph in . seconds with TwinPower Turbo technology and reaches a smooth-running top speed of mph. Thanks to common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger with Variable Vane Geometry, the max. torque of Nm is reached within a range of , and ,rpm and on average this engine consumes only .mpg.

BMW d Effi cientDynamics. This model stands for reduced fuel consumption and CO

emissions

and increased driving pleasure more than any other, thanks to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and additional effi cient features such as an adjusted fi nal drive ratio, tyres with reduced rolling resistance and a vehicle specifi c Optimum Shift Indicator. Fuel effi ciency is boosted even further by its optimised aerodynamics, which are the result of features such as a lowered chassis. So it’s not surprising that this pioneering BMW is expected to consume an average of only .mpg and produce just g/km of CO

while delivering an output of hp (kW) and

Nm torque.

Suspension and safety36 37

PURE DRIVING DYNAMICS.

It’s a quality embodied by every single BMW without exception. The technical basis for this thrilling driving experience lies in the suspension. It ensures optimal contact with the road surface and ideal road holding in every situation – the result of its : weight distribution and an array of seamlessly combined innovative components. BMW engineers are continually re-inventing and refi ning those classic BMW driving dynamics to ensure that every BMW chassis puts the driver in direct contact with the vehicle and the passion for dynamic driving – while also providing the highest levels of safety and comfort.

THE IDEAL FOUNDATION FOR SUPERIOR DRIVING

DYNAMICS. A BRILLIANT SUSPENSION.

Optimised road holding is crucial for a truly dynamic driving experience. In the new BMW Series Sports Hatch, this is achieved by a weight distribution of almost : between the front and rear axles, as well as neutral steering behaviour, a high level of directional stability and fantastic traction.

Rear-wheel drive. The new BMW Series Sports Hatch is the only model in its class to feature a rear-wheel drive. This type of drive provides the kind of extraordinary agility and manoeuvrability that BMW is renowned for. It also enables the vehicle weight to be ideally distributed across the entire running gear, which optimises traction and therefore the transmission of power to the road.

Steering. There is no unwanted torque on the front axle of the new BMW Series Sports Hatch, thanks to the strict separation of steering and drive train. The steering power is evenly distributed and the steering angle is small. As a result, the driver can feel road conditions and receives more direct feedback when cornering. On top of it all, the electric power steering supports the reduction of fuel consumption.

Lightweight suspension. The suspension of the new BMW Series Sports Hatch is designed to perfectly complement the engine and transmission. You can feel it in the precision of the steering, the agile handling, superb acoustic characteristics, lack of body roll and direct feedback from the road. The front suspension consists of a lightweight double-joint trailing-arm axle, which combines maximum strength with minimum weight. Together with the multi-arm rear axle and the rear-wheel drive, sporty handling is guaranteed. The result: a small turning circle and a high level of directional stability, dynamic cornering and optimum traction at all times.

Adaptive M Sport Suspension. This optional suspension stands for exceptional driving comfort and increased agility and directional stability. The chassis is lowered by mm for a fi rmer suspension setting and even more precise handling.

Variable Sport steering. This item of optional equipment provides a steering ratio that increases with the steering angle. So you can enjoy increased agility on winding roads, more safety at higher speeds and greater convenience when parking. With the help of Servotronic, this optional system also continuously adjusts the steering power to suit the current speed.

Body. The new BMW Series Sports Hatch features a particularly rigid passenger cell. This increases steering precision and agility, while also improving passenger safety. The body only yields in precisely defi ned areas at the front and rear. Should an accident occur, these deformation zones are capable of absorbing a large part of the impact, thereby minimising the severity of the collision as it happens.

Page 20: BMW 1 Series

UNPARALLELED SAFETY WITH

THE LATEST BMW TECHNOLOGIES.

The new BMW Series Sports Hatch model is equipped with cutting-edge technologies for every eventuality. Superb handling and innovative equipment come standard. Drivers benefi t from the very latest technologies that provide optimal support at all times. You’ll feel safe and protected, no matter where your journey takes you.

Suspension and safety38 39

Adaptive headlights with variable light distribution, including

cornering lights and the High-beam Assistant, illuminate bends at greater

distances by optimally adjusting the swivelling headlights as soon as

the driver turns the steering wheel. To improve short-range visibility, the

turning lights integrated into the fog lights are automatically activated,

even when the vehicle is at a standstill, as soon as the indicator is

switched on or the steering wheel is turned.

Dynamic Stability Control, DSC, including Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Hill-Start Assistant, Brake Assist, Dry Braking function and brake readiness. DSC is able to detect any slight skidding and stabilise the car within fractions of a second. The traction mode sub-function (DTC) allows increased wheel slip to optimise acceleration in certain driving conditions and to enable more dynamic driving.

Disc brakes, all-round (front, inner-vented) are specially designed to ensure maximum driving safety and easy operation. The braking system is characterised by its long service life and the provision of consistently short braking distances.

Airbags are just one of the passive safety elements in your BMW that make up a perfectly coordinated system. Six airbags are installed for precise protection: driver and front passenger airbags, the head airbags (curtain) for front and rear as well as side airbags stowed in the seatbacks.

Standard equipment Optional equipment

The front and rear bumpers feature easily-replaceable deformation elements that absorb impacts at speeds up to mph.

Passenger cell. The system of members and nodes in the functional

body structure combined with the strategic deployment of high-strength

materials delivers maximum passive safety in front, side or rear crashes.

Defined deformation zones mean that the body structure can absorb

impact energy, increasing passenger protection.

BMW restraint system for the driver and front passenger, comprises three-point seat belts combined with integral tensioners and force limiters. So in the event of a collision, passengers are held safely in their seats. The seat belt buckles in the rear are coded to avoid them being incorrectly fastened.

Run-fl at tyres. Reinforced side walls prevent the tyres from completely collapsing or loosening from the rim if the air pressure drops (standard with " light alloy wheels and larger), helping you make it safely to the next repair shop. The Tyre Puncture Warning System (TPWS) notifi es the driver

of any tyre problems. A minor loss in pressure is signalled by a light in

the cockpit, while any greater loss is additionally signalled with an

acoustic warning.

MORE EFFICIENCY

EVERY DAY.

The ECO PRO mode in the new BMW Series Sports Hatch turns the driver into an energy saving expert. It enables a fuel saving of up to %¹, depending on your driving style. To motivate the driver, the mileage saved are displayed in the On-Board Computer.

ECO PRO TIPS By the third set of traffi c lights, you’ve already earned your fi rst bonus miles. When activated, the ECO PRO driving mode adds up the bonus mileage earned by driving economically. The small petrol pump symbol in the display shows the ECO PRO gains you’ve made. It’s yet another feature of the comprehensive BMW Effi cientDynamics technology package. On the one hand it gives the driver ECO PRO tips for even more effi cient driving, and on the other it gears the vehicle’s technology towards maximum effi ciency. The technical implementation of this smart fuel-saving technology is headed by project manager Jürgen Geus: “In ECO PRO mode we use software to change the performance characteristics of the engine – the automatic transmission shifts up earlier and stays in the higher gear for longer. For manual transmissions, the shift indicators are modifi ed accordingly. In addition, the driver has the option of reducing the maximum setting for the air conditioning and the seat heating.” BMW engineers have set up all the technical conditions for maximum effi ciency, but the driver also has the power to make additional fuel savings.

GENTLE ACCELERATION The ECO PRO mode displays the ECO PRO tips in the Control Display. The additional bonus mileage earned through effi cient driving is displayed to motivate the driver. An Effi cientDynamics display in the rev counter also provides valuable information for clocking up bonus mileage. A blue bar indicates optimum effi ciency. It shows an area within which fuel consumption varies only minimally. Only when the driver presses the accelerator harder and leaves the blue zone does fuel consumption increase disproportionately – and the colour of the bar changes to grey.

PRE-EMPTIVE DRIVING Along with the tip about the accelerator, the ECO PRO mode gives the driver other suggestions – such as those relating to pre-emptive driving. The overall concept of the displays and information was developed by Christian Popp. The engineer explains his intentions: “The ECO PRO tips are not intended to pressure or lecture the driver. Saving fuel is meant to be fun. Of course, the driver can always override or deactivate the system.” However, once you’ve been driving in ECO PRO mode for a few miles, you’re unlikely to fi nd a reason to. The difference between the ECO PRO mode and the other optional modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+) is particularly noticeable in the fuel consumption history on the Control Display. Here you can see that the ECO PRO mode encourages a calmer driving style. You accelerate more gently and drive more pre-emptively.

MILEAGE GAINS In city traffi c, you can make particularly big savings in ECO PRO mode. Driving pre-emptively and avoiding hard acceleration result in major savings without losing much time. In comparative test drives, all of the drivers always ended up stopping at the same traffi c light. The driver without the ECO PRO mode was in fi rst position, with the driver using ECO PRO a little behind – so there was no real evidence that driving more effi ciently will slow you down. The ECO PRO mode also provides drivers with valuable information for driving more effi ciently on country roads and motorways. Even when driving uphill it pays to stay in a higher gear for as long as possible. If you don’t believe it, take a look at the bonus mileage you’ve gained.

According to an internal BMW fuel consumption study.

Condition Based Service. A key feature in most BMW models, Condition

Based Service (CBS) signals an innovative leap forward in BMW Service

diagnostic technology. The way it works is simple. CBS uses sensors to

constantly monitor the areas of your BMW that are subjected to wear and tear.

Based on the results of the data, CBS decides the extent to which servicing is

necessary. This information is then stored in your vehicle’s key. Using a

KeyReader, BMW Service staff can download information to provide an

accurate analysis of your vehicle. This means your BMW goes for a service

only when it needs to, saving you an immeasurable amount of both time and

money.

Service Intelligence. BMW Approved Technicians are experts in the use of

diagnostic equipment, which quickly identifi es if and why the vehicle is running

at anything less than peak effi ciency. This leads to rapid identifi cation and

rectifi cation.

that every new BMW is covered by a three-year warranty that includes BMW

BMW World, an iconic building

World is a true brand experience where

it’s possible to marvel at the historic

BMWs in the museum, learn about our

engineers’ newest innovations and

take a tour of the plant to experience

with your own eyes the cutting-edge

and exacting methods used to create

a BMW.

Because vehicle manufacturing requires a lot of water, we have developed intelligent circulation systems for our plants to recycle it as often as possible. We have already achieved our goal of zero waste water production at our engine plant in Steyr where, in , , engines were manufactured without any waste water.

Sustainability is a key concern for the BMW Group. This is why we rely primarily on environmentally friendly means of transportation such as rail and ships. For instance, we cover approximately . billion tonne-kilometres annually transporting materials and new vehicles and %

of the entire volume is conveyed by sea. This eases the burden on roads and the environment. The BMW Group is always looking to the future, so your BMW is part of an extensive recycling concept where every vehicle can be recycled easily and economically. To hand back your end-of-life vehicle, please contact your BMW Dealer. Further information is available at:
