We begin this weeks study in Ki-Tisa, but to gain a better

understanding and greaterwisdom on where were going its important to

look back at where weve been Ahmein? Much as Isa. 46:10 declares in

order to know the end we must return to the beginning, The Father has

from the beginning provided His plan, yes? And in these last three Torah

portions studied, wevebeen given the Righteous Rulings of YHVH, or

Mishpatim; In Terumah we were then instructed on the proper attitude of

the heart we must possess prior to bringing any offering unto YAH, and

then given the Blueprint on the construction of the Mishkan which was

taken directly from Heavens Court and then explained to Moshe on how to

make a physical copy here on Earth, right? And then we learned in Tetsaveh

all about more of the furnishings of the Mishkan, the Hight PriestsGarments, his crucial role that he plays in conducting proper worship for

him, his family and the entire nation of Israel;and in particular how it was

important in the midst of this colorful, symbolic array of fabric and

precious stones and Gold, and the incredible craftsmanship required to

manufacture it, that still, it all must come back to a willing heart; Because

unless we have a willing and humble heart, The Father cannot come in

place His Character there, and do the good work He has planned for each of

    us.

The plan does not change. His Word changes not, however, we tend

to make excuses out of failed attempts to justify our own selfish behavior

sometimes, yes? Sometimes our behavior is cloaked in the best of

intentions. Just look at what we learned in Yechezkel, Ezekiellast weeks

Haftarah parsha when Israel had been deported to Babylon and the

Israelites were in confusion as they had become so callous in their hearts

that they had become blinded to their own spiritual adultery and harlotry.

Look at King Solomonfor all the wisdom YHVH had blessed him with, nota wiser man has lived since, and yet he too allowed himself to be pulled

away from Adonai into realms of paganism and defilement. Weve

discussed brother Uzziah, the unfortunate soul who despite his best

intentions to save the Ark from spilling off the ox-cart was immediately

dispatched when he reached out to touch it.

What we fail to remember is that our Father, YHVH, did not save usto spoil us rotten! Paul said

19I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your

flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurityand to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now presentyour members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.(Rom6:19NAS)

He did not pull us out of the cruel slavery of Egypt to lay us upon a goose-down pillow of pleasure, to live a life governed by our own fleshly appetites.

I say this because YHVH has made it clear. He says

CJB Leviticus 18:1ADONAI said to Moshe, 2"Speak to the people ofIsra'el; tell them, 'I am ADONAI your God. 3You are not to engage in

the activities found in the land of Egypt, where you used to live; andyou are not to engage in the activities found in the land of Kena'an,

where I am bringing you; nor are you to live by their laws. 4You

are to obey my rulings and laws and live accordingly; I am ADONAI

your God. 5You are to observe my laws and rulings; if a person does

them, he will have life through them; I am ADONAI. (Lev18:1-5CJB)

In remembering that Adonai loves us, we have to keep in heart &

mind that He desires for us to draw near to Him, but He has made it clear

how that is to be accomplished; my brother Dr. Jones has expressed one

case-in-point, for instance; most folks tend to shy away from the book of

Leviticus. They say, Leviticus is a book written for the Levites, and

therefore has very little to do with me, but when you look at the word in the

Hebrew for Leviticus, or Vayikrait comes from the verse in Leviticus 1:2

Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When any man of you

brings an offeringto the LORD, you shall bring your offering ofanimals from the herd or the flock. (Lev1:2NAS)

The word there for bring is qarab. Strongs#7126 and it meansTo Come Near-To Approach

To approach who? YHVH! Suddenly we want to begin reading thebook! Well, this weeks parasha is referencing not onlythe book of

Leviticus, but more specifically one of the most important principals of

Torah, as represented in what some would say is the most important of all

the Feasts of AdonaiYom HaKippurimor Day of Coverings. Lets press

in and dig into YHVHs Word and see what He is trying to teach us in Ki-

    Tisa, or When You Lift.

11The LORD also spoke to Moses, saying, 12"When you take a census

of the sons of Israel to number them, then each one of them shall

give a ransom for himself to the LORD, when you number them, that

there may be no plague among them when you number them.

13"This is what everyone who is numbered shall give: half a shekel

according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty

gerahs), half a shekel as a contribution to the LORD. 14"Everyone

who is numbered, from twenty years old and over, shall give the

contribution to the LORD.15"The rich shall not pay more, and the poor shall not pay less

than the half shekel, when you give the contribution to the LORD to

    make atonement for yourselves.

16"And you shall take the atonement money from the sons of Israel,

and shall give it for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may

be a memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD, to make

    atonement for yourselves." (Exo30:11-16NAS)

The word used there in verse 11 for when you take is from the

Hebrew word nh, naw-saw(Strongs#5375); its a primary root and it

means to lift, and more specifically is used of the undertaking of the

    responsibilities for sins of

    others by substitution or

    representation. It also

means to lift up a load orburden and carry it.

In Exodus 30, verse 12 we

    read,

Ki tisa et-rosh bnei-Israel, or in English When you take a census of

the sons of Israel. But literally it reads When you lift the heads of the sons

of Israel. This is referencing what today we would typically call, a head

count, and in this particular function it was for determining the number of

males available for military service for the protection of the nation of

    Israel.

Just like the construction of the Mishkan, HaShem has a specific way

to account for all those who muster for military service.

12"When you take a census of the people of Isra'el and register them,

each, upon registration, is to pay aransom for his life to ADONAI, to

avoid any breakout of plague among them during the time of the

    census. (Exo30:12CJB)

The word we read there for census is Rosh, or head, and the word forregister, or number depending on the translation youre reading is pqad,

paw-kadto oversee, muster, charge, care for. There are several words for

number , or register, but this particular word suggests that in this usage its

real meaning is to muster troops or to ascertain the available man-power. It

usually concerns soldiers, Levites or priests. It may be noted that the so-

called census in Numbers chapter 1 concerns only the adult men able to go

forth to war (v.20). It was more than a census; it was an organizing of the

    troops for battle (Theo. Wrdbk. O.T., 1802 paqad, p.731).Several versesverify this reference is referring to military service, here are a few;

Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent

of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after

they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2"Take a census of

all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their

fathers' households, according to the number of names, every male,

head by head 3from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able

to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them bytheir armies. (Num1:1-3NAS)

    Numbers 1:20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 45We read of King Davids sin in numbering the troops contrary to

YHVHs method and therefore suffered a plague that destroyed 70,000

men! Remember that word destroyedwere coming back to it in just a

    moment.

    So the word reads, then

    each one of them shall

    give a ransomfor

    himself to the LORD (Ewo.30:12)

The word for ransom used in this verse is the Hebrew word kpher,

which comes from the primary root word kphar, kaw-far,(Strongs#3722) & it means TO COVER, to expiate, to condone, to placate,

to cancel, to purge, pardon or pitch; to cover over, propitiate, ransom,

atone, expiate.According to Benners Ancient Hebrew Lexicon we can

ascertain it also means to cover, a lid, Atonement, a protective covering

to go over something or the covering of a debt or wrong. Village; A village is

a community outside of the city walls and covered withprotectionfrom

the city; To pacify, to purify (BDB, 497b, 498b)

& this was done so that there may be no plague among them when you

    number them. (Exo30:12NAS)

Why were they in danger of suffering a plague? Because the census, done

properly according to YHVHs standards was a work of Atonement for

Israel, and if Israel disobeyed YHVHs command to conduct the census

thusly, then there would be no covering!if no covering, then they were

vulnerable and had no protection! Therefore they would suffer a plague.

    YHVH instructed,

28"Neither shall you do any work on this same day, for it is a day

of atonement, to make atonement on your behalf before the LORD

your God. 29"If there is any person who will not humble himself on

this same day, he shall be cut off from his people. (Lev23:28-29NAS)

When we study the paleo-Hebrew for the word Kaphar, we discover the

root word kippur (J.B. Ancient Hebrew Lexicon, ##2283V). Itlooks like this in the Paleo.

    Reading from right to left

the first letter is the Kaf

and it looks like the open

palm or hand. The next letter is the Pey, and it symbolizes the mouth. The

last letter is the Resh, which looks like a head. Remember, on Yom

HaKippurim, The Day of Coverings, on The Day of AtonementThe High

Priest would transfer the sins of Israel by opening his mouth and speaking

them as he laid his hands on the head of the sacrificial animal.

The word for plague there is

from the word ngaph, naw-gaf, and

it means to push, gore, defeat, stub the

    toe, inflict disease. Browns Driver

Briggs compares easily with strike, smite, of

serious even fatal injury, ones foot against, stumble, especially of judgment, causing

defeat in battle, striking against which the foot

strikes and so stumbles (BDB, 619d, 620b).

The significance of this is in understanding that we are not to attempt

to use our common-sense practices on how to worship Our Holy God,

but rather to abide in His Word that Hes prescribed, Ahmein?

The Father is teaching His children an important lesson about the

proper way to take account of your military personnel. We discovered later

in the book of 2 Samuel chapter 24 that our beloved King David had to

learn the hard way that a severe cost is involved if we elect not to adhere to

the pattern of walking in His Torah as YHVH had already previously set

forth. But the significance behind this lesson as outlined in todays parasha

is simply one of trust. Who do you put your trust in? YHVH? Or man?

David realized he had made a mistake and willingly confessed it, but not

    without consequences.

10Now David's heart troubled him after he had numbered the people.

So David said to the LORD, "I have sinned greatly in what I have

done. But now, O LORD, please take away the iniquity of Thy

servant, for I have acted very foolishly." (2Sa24:10NAS)

Not surprisingly our Heavenly Father demonstrates this lesson quite

clearly when we read our haftarah this week, as it outlines the Awesome

victory given to the prophet Elijah at Mt. Carmel, when he drew the line in

the sand and told King Ahab and Jezebel and all those who ate at their

    table,

21And Elijah came near to all the people and said, "How long will

    you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him;

but if Baal, follow him." But the people did not answer him a word.

    (1Ki18:21NAS)

YHVH has created the means for all His people to serve Him, but

without a humble heart of willingness and obediencewe see the

destruction of all these pagan nations surrounding Israel, who have a

likeness or appearance of Godliness, but is in truth a mere counterfeit.

13"This is what everyone who is numbered shall give: half a shekel

according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty

gerahs), half a shekel as a contribution to the LORD.

14"Everyone who is numbered, from twenty years old and over, shall

give the contribution to the LORD.

15"The rich shall not pay more, and the poor shall not pay less

than the half shekel, when you give the contribution to the LORD to

    make atonement for yourselves.

16"And you shall take the atonement money from the sons of Israel,

and shall give it for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may

be a memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD, to make

    atonement for yourselves." (Exo30:13-

    16NAS)

    9 | P a g e

By giving the half-shekel, this did several things, ALL for the good of

Israel and those who registered to serve in the Army of Israel. For one,

instead of counting the actual person, now they could ascertain the number

of soldiers by simply counting the silver half shekels. This was a reminder

that victory was not obtained through an arm of flesh, but rather The Spirit

of YHVH that went with them into every battle. The offering of the

Contribution, or Terumahwhich had to come from the willing heart

    provided for their protection, or

The children of Israel are coming together in unity to be numbered

willingly offering their lives to the protection and SERVICE OF ISRAEL.

Who does Israel belong to? YHVH? So who are those mustering to SERVE

actually SERVING? YHVH! YHVH is absolutely in support of this, but

again, if we are going to SERVE Him properly, He requires that we abide byHis outline, as set forth in this parsha.

The silver half-shekel represents redemption money as silver is

recognized throughout scripture as the precious metal symbolic of

redemption. Remember Terumah? Silver, or Keceph, Strongs#3701, was

typically used to by ones kinsman redeemer to purchase them out of

slavery. Silver as used in the construction of the Mishkan is seen in the

construction of the silver sockets and bands to connect the planks that were

brought together, united to become the very walls of the Mishkan thatwould hold up the Tent of Meeting! Later we see in the Levitical system, the

peoples prescribed mode of worship was to bring a clean and spotless

sacrifice to the Mishkan where its blood (because the life is in the blood,

    Lev. 17:11 )

  • 8/13/2019 B'midbar Ministries: Ki Tisa When You Lift

11'For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you

on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the bloodby reason of the life that makes atonement.' (Lev17:11NAS)

Also we witness Atonement being made on the special Holy Feast day of

Yom HaKippurim, or Day of Atonements when the High Priest would place

his hands upon the goat and thereby transfer all the sins and defilement

onto that animal, at which time it was offered and its bloodwould be set on

the altar of sacrifice and completely burned up and consumed in smoke,

which would go up into the face of YHVH, and this was considered our

appropriate mode of worship and SERVICE.

Youve perhaps noticed Ive stressed the word serve, or service several

times in the last few pages. The reason for this is to demonstrate yet

another function of the silver half shekel.

The word abodah is the word we see in Exo. 30:12.

16"And you shall take the atonement money from the sons of Israel,

and shall give it for the serviceof the tent of meeting, that it maybe a memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD, to make

    atonement for yourselves." (Exo30:16NAS)

However we also see it is the same word used of the service of the High

    Priest performed on Yom HaKippurim,

13"And they shall not come near to Me to serve as a priest to Me,

nor come near to any of My holy things, to the things that are most

holy; but they shall bear their shame and their abominations which

    they have committed.

service, and of all that shall be done in it. (Eze44:13-14NAS)26"Therefore we said, 'Let us build an altar, not for burnt offeringor for sacrifice; 27rather it shall be a witness between us and you

and between our generations after us, that we are to perform the

serviceof the LORD before Him with our burnt offerings, and withour sacrifices and with our peace offerings, that your sons may not

say to our sons in time to come, "You have no portion in the LORD."'

    (Jos22:26-27NAS)

When the service is offered to God, it will consist of obedience. The

performance of this service is found in the OT ritual and worship, e.g. the

peoples bringing sacrifices (Josh. 22:27) and the service of the Levites and

priests (Num. 4:19). It also refers to military service (Ezek. 29:18) (Theo.

    Wdbk. Of the O.T., p.640)

Interestinglywhen we were redeemed fromthe house of bondage,

and no longer a slave to Pharaoh, did we cease being a slave? No! We just

    switched masters! Paul says,

For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and tolawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your

members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.

    (Rom6:19NAS)

Therefore we are as Yaakov, the half-brother of Yeshua, declared,

From: Ya'akov, a slave of Godand of the Lord Yeshua the MessiahTo: The Twelve Tribes in the Diaspora: Shalom! (Jam1:1CJB)

If we look at slave, or servant in the Hebrew the word is Eved. From slave

we also get the words abad (work) & abodah (service)!

The word used here for Laver is Strongs#3564, or kwr,

koor; from an unused root meaning to dig through; a pot

or furnace (as if excavated). In the paleo

Hebrew its comprised of a Kaf, a Vav,

and a Resh. Its meaning is to dig, or to examine. Which

isnt that what the priests were commanded to do when

they intended to approach the altar of sacrifice or to go into

the Holy place? YHVH required that they wash at the bronze laver first so

that they not die. This was a means for the priest to look into the polished

bronze surface which stood for judgment, realizing that he had fallen short

of YHVHs requirement, but at the same time finding cleansing water to

cleanse him and make him able now to approach the altar and Holy place toserve YHVH. YHVH requires each of us daily to visit the bronze laver. The

bronze laver is there for us to willingly hold our thoughts, actions and

motives up to the light of Torah, and then when we realize we too have

fallen short, humble ourselves and ask for the cleansing power from that

    Living Fountain, Yeshua Messiah,

13O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake thee shall be

ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth,

because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.14Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be

saved: for thou art my praise. (Jer17:13-14KJV)

38He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his

belly shall flow rivers of living water. (Joh7:38KJV)

7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have

fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son

    cleanseth us from all sin.

8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth

is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to

forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

    (1Jo1:7-9KJV)

YHVH is teaching us about making a distinction between clean and

unclean, Holy and profaneYHVH wants to dwell in us, but He requires usto be honest with ourselves and to honestly look in our hearts and come to

the Living water that cleanses from all sin.

    Myrrh, Cinnamon, & Cassia:

= Myrrh S#4753 meaning bitter or strong, suggests it was distilled, &therefore used for purity (Esther 2:12)

= Cinnamon, S#7076. Cinnamon has a warm, sweet, pleasing, andpeculiar arom. Christ, with the Holy Ghost, or Divine Cinnamon, resting

upon Him, gave forth that feelin of warmth which was sweet, pleasing and

peculiar. This is the case with all those whose lives have been anointed with

    the Cinnamon (Lascelle, p.225)

=Cane, or Calamus, S#7070. Sweet Calamus..means to standuprighthence, a cane, or reed. It usually grows in miry soil. The more

this bark is beaten, the sweeter is its fragrance. How like the Christ Who

grew in the mire of this world upright and fragrant to God. He was beaten,

humiliated, spit upon, and nailed to the Cross of Agony, yet He prayed on

behalf of His persecutors, Father, forgive them for they know not what they

do. We are to be as He was. The more we are persecuted, the sweeter we

are to be, by the enablement of the Holy Ghost, the Heavenly Calamus

    (Lascelle, p. 225).

= Cassia, S#6916. The fourth spice was cassia, which grows from ashrub only on great heights of around 8,000 feet. As this plant flourished

where other plants could not grow, so we see at Calvarys height the

perfection of Christ in His faithfulness. In the place of His sacrifice for sin

there was ielded a peculiar fragrance such as from no other death. Coming

from the heights of Calvary is the Holy Ghost Who elevates the receiver to

heavenly places, above the elements of the world. Four spices were to be

combined with a hin (six quarts) of pure Olive oilthe symbol of the Holy

    Spirit. (Lascelle, p.226)

14'Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to

you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for

whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from

    among his people.

15'For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there

is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD; whoever does

any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death.

16'So the sons of Israel shall observe the sabbath, to celebrate

the sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant.'

17"It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in

six days the LORD made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day

He ceased from labor, and was refreshed." (Exo31:12-17NAS)

True Worship? Or Corruption? READ CHAPTER 32:1-12

What we encounter here is The Israelites demonstrating only so

elegantly their lack of ability to discipline themselves. With Moses gone

on the mountain, the people had become weary waiting for him. The

Talmud says concerning Israel What a peculiar people! When solicited

to build the tabernacle, they give generously. When solicited to fashion

an idol, they give equally generously (Etz Hayim, p.530) But what does

    YHVH say?

24No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one,

and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise

the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Mat6:24KJV)

Notice how close the words for Worship & Corrupt are!

Shachat= Corrupt and Shachah= To WorshipBoth connote the sense of sinking. Shachat symbolizes to sink, to trap

as in a pit, and Shachah symbolizes to sink, as in to bring down low,

to bow or to pay homage to another by bowing low or getting on

the knees with the face to the ground.

7Moshe would take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away

from the camp. He called it the tent of meeting. Everyone who

wanted to consult ADONAI would go out to the tent of meeting,

outside the camp. 8Whenever Moshe went out to the tent, all thepeople would get up and stand, each man at his tent door, and look

at Moshe until he had gone into the tent.

9Whenever Moshe entered the tent, the column of cloud would

descend and station itself at the entrance to the tent; and ADONAI

cloud stationed at the entrance to the tent, they would get up and

He wants our heart first. So regardless of how beautiful the outer

structure is, regardless of how valuable the raw materials are, if the heart is

in rebellion He cannot dwell in you! And this is what happened with the

Gold Calf. They made a graven image of a false god, and worshipped itand

what is worse they pinned YHVHs Name to it and claimed it to be a Feast

unto YHVH! Who does this remind us of?

12"How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of

the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have

    weakened the nations!

13"But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise

my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of

assembly In the recesses of the north. 14'I will ascend above the

    (Isa14:12-14NAS)

To take a false, pagan festival, put YHVHs Name on it and celebrateitis detestable unto YHVH. He cannot tolerate that because He is Holy!

Spirit. And where the Spirit of ADONAI is, there is freedom.18So all of us, with faces unveiled, see as in a mirror the glory ofthe Lord; and we are being changed into his very image, from onedegree of glory to the next, by ADONAI the Spirit. (2Co3:14-18CJB)
