Panel Array Functionality

Designers often panelize single boards into arrays or sub-panels.Documenting the finished panel and adding features such as pinning holes, fiducials, score lines and breakaway tabs can be difficult and time consumingin today’s CAD and CAM tools. BluePrint has panel drawing elements andtools that simplify the panel documentation process.

The Panel Drawing Palette

On the left side of the BluePrint application you will find the Tool Palettes.Tool Palettes are organized by function and contain drawing elements thatyou can drag and drop onto your drawing sheet. Using the Panel Drawingpalette you can quickly create and position arrayed panels, fiducials, pinningholes, web routes, mill tabs, score lines, details and associated drill charts.

Main User Interface Layout

Create a Pinning HoleA Pinning Hole is typically a drill and can be displayed as a drill symbol or acircle representing the drill size. BluePrint installs with a library of PinningHoles. You can also create your own pinning hole using BluePrint’s CreateDrill tool and save it to the library with a specified name.

Create a FiducialFiducials, also known as circuit pattern recognition marks, allow automatedassembly equipment to accurately locate and place parts on boards. A fiducial in BluePrint is typically represented by a circle, but can be created asany shape. BluePrint installs with a library of fiducials. You can also create your own fiducial using BluePrint’s drafting tools and BluePrint’s MakeFiducial command.

Create a Panel Creating a Panel in BluePrint is simple. Just as you would drag and drop atop-side view, you can drag and drop a top-side, bottom-side, drill, or boardoutline panel. A 2x2 panel is automatically created on your sheet based onthe imported CAD data.

Auto-Calculate Placement of the Board ImagesBluePrint supports two modes for creating arrayed board images. In Auto-calculate mode, BluePrint will generate values based on the manual setting of corresponding values. For instance, you can manually set thenumber of board images in the X and Y axis and BluePrint will automatically

calculate the Panel Size taking into account the board dimensions, border

and board image spacing. A preview window on the Formatdialog displays the auto-calculated board images in real-time.This is very helpful when trying to determine how to maximize

the panel space. BluePrint also supports a Spreadsheetmode which allows the user to specify the exact placement, rotation and format for each PCB image.

Add Pinning Holes to PanelAdding pinning holes to the panel is easy. Simply select thePinning Holes tab on the Format Panel Drawing dialog andthen select the Add button. The Add Pinning Hole dialog willappear. Select the pinning hole you want from the library listand then set the position on the panel. You can add as manypinning holes as you need.

Add Fiducials to PanelAdding fiducials to the panel is just as easy as adding pinningholes. Simply select the Fiducials tab on the Format PanelDrawing dialog and then select the Add button. The AddFiducials dialog will appear. Select the Fiducial you want fromthe library list and then set the position on the panel. You canadd as many fiducials as you need.

Add WebrouteWeb routes represent the path that a router bit would makeafter it has run around the edge of an individual board.BluePrint can automatically create a web route for a board inthe panel. You can add Mill Tabs to the web route. You cancopy and paste web routes from one board to others. You canalso merge overlapping web routes on the panel. To add aweb route you simply select a board in the panel and executethe Add Webroute command from the context menu.

Add Mill Tabs Mill Tabs represent the remaining material once a router bit hasrun around the edge of the individual board. These tabs arewhat hold the board to the panel while the board is assembled.BluePrint installs with a library of Mill Tab styles. You can create your own Mill Tabs using BluePrint’s Mill Tab Managerand add and delete them from BluePrint’s library. To add a MillTab to a web route you simply drag and drop the Mill Tabdrawing element from the Panel Drawing palette or you execute the Add Mill Tab command and specify the position.

Copy Web Route Parameters to all Board ImagesOnce you complete the web route and mill tab definition for a single board in the panel, you can copy that web route to all board images in the panel with a single context menu command.

Merge Web Routes BluePrint will automatically cleanup overlapping routes and mill tabs and remove “islands” created by the Merge WebRoute command.

NAVIGATION PANEFor CAM350 Version 10.0, the new Navigation Pane includesCAM350 editor specific panes for the CAM Editor workspace, the Panel Editor workspace, and the Release Package view. Inaddition, the pane is split to include CAM350 Commands andimportant Tools. Commands selected from the navigation panecall existing CAM350 commands. The CAM Editor workspacenavigation pane displays CAM Editor commands and a projectexplorer style view of the layers, components, nets and otherdata in the design. The Panel Editor workspace navigation panedisplays panel editor commands and a navigation tree showinglayers, stepped images, symbols, and Dcodes. The ReleasePackage navigation pane will show the contents of the currentrelease package. Opening each navigation pane will switch theCAM350 graphics workspace to the associated editor or view. You are able to show or hide the Navigation Pane using the View> Navigation Pane command. Not that theNavigation Pane replaces theView>Shortcut Bar command. For eachworkspace, tab views support switchingbetween associated editors or views for theassociated data hierarchy. See the sectionbelow for View Tabs.

• Project Explorer Bar - The newProject Explorer bar supports viewingand highlighting various Design Datafor each of the editors in CAM350.Importantly, you can select and high-light multiple data items. This is usefulwhen you would like to keep itemshighlighted during design investigationand modification.

• Layer Bar - The new layer bar withthe Project Explorer supports contextmenus and multiple selection to allowoperations such as reordering orrenaming layers without going to theLayer Table dialog.

• Dcodes - In the Project Explorer, youare able to select and highlightDcodes using the project explorernavigation tree. Popup tool tip pre-view windows show all parameters foreach Dcode as you move the mouseover an entry in the navigation pane.

• Nets - In the Project Explorer, you are able to select and highlight nets. The nets will remain highlighted untilyou unhighlight them using the navigation pane.

• External Nets - In the Project Explorer, you are able toselect and highlight external nets that are imported usingthe File>Import>IPCD356A or other netlist import com-mands. The external nets will remain highlighted until youunhighlight them using the navigation pane. Further, youare able to snap to external net hit points. This allows youto align objects to the external netlist hit points.

• Parts - In the Project Explorer, you are able to select andhighlight parts. The parts will remain highlighted until youunhighlight them using the navigation pane.

• Drill tools - In the Project Explorer, you are able to selectand highlight drills. The drills will remain highlighted untilyou unhighlight them using the navigation pane.

REVERSE ENGINEERINGONLINE DEMONSTRATIONSWe have added a feature on our website to show you each individual step of the Reverse Engineering process. If you areworking with "legacy" data in a Gerber format, DownStream can"Reverse Engineer" it for you. Reverse engineering is the process

of starting with Gerber files then adding part and netlist information, to create an intelligent database, which can bebrought back to any CAD system.

Reverse Engineering Functional Demonstrations::

• Part One: Data Preparation

• Part Two: Building and Adding Parts

• Part Three: Exporting Data and Reading into your CAD System

You can watch these demonstrations online or save them to your system to watch offline. Please visit: http://www.downstreamtech.com/support/Reverse_engineering.html to learn more.
