  • Lighting Hubs and Controllers

HID Hubs HUB-4 and HUB-8Blueprint Controllers HID Hubs act as the nucleus of a large grow room, centralizing lighting control to run a network of HID ballasts on a synchronized schedule. Featuring four and eight universal receptacles, respectively, the HUB-4 and HUB-8 coordinate up to four and eight HID ballasts of up to 1,000 watts each. An integrated trigger cable connects to any 120-volt timer to operate the ballasts on a timed lighting sequence. HID hubs require hardwiring into a 120-volt or 240-volt power source; recommended and most efficient setup is 240-volt. Ballasts must be of the same voltage as the power source. The HUB-4 and HUB-8 are wall-mountable.

The diagrams shown are intended as examples only. All products portrayed in these sample diagrams, alone and in combination, are shown for the purpose of illustrating only a few of many possible applications. The most appropriate controllers and equipment for an individual grow room will be determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: grow room infrastructure, voltage and available amperage, and ambient environmental conditions.

Always consider the requirements and limitations of a particular area before choosing equipment. Never use equipment that exceeds the amperage limit of a connected controller or the grow room wiring.

Controller and timer settings are provided as examples of possible configurations only. The appropriate and most efficient settings for any individual grow room will vary. For controller settings not specified, the factory default setting is appropriate.

Central air conditioning, while not represented in these diagrams, can be used as a method of climate control where available.

When using supplemental CO2, sealed room setups are always superior to external ventilation. No matter how well coordinated, ventilation will result in some CO2 loss.

Sealed Room | Hydroponic GardenAn environmentally controlled, streamlined setup with twelve lights on a HUB-12HD. Two CO2 generators on either side of the room help distribute CO2 evenly over a large area. One large sump pump and central reservoir feeds all flood and drain hydroponic tables.

  • Understanding CO2 SystemsFor serious indoor growers who crave accelerated growth cycles and aggressive yields, supplemental carbon dioxide (CO2) is a grow room essential. CO2-enriched environments produce plants with lush foliage, increased branching and more plentiful flowers. The air we breathe contains about 300 to 400 parts per million (ppm) of CO2; plants grown in carbon dioxide levels between 1,200 to 1,500 ppm can grow two to three times faster than those grown without the extra CO2.

Blueprint Controllers offers equipment for the two main types of CO2 systems used in indoor gardens: CO2 injection, and CO2 generators supplied by liquid propane or natural gas. Each method has pros and cons.

CO2 InjectionMore common in smaller grow rooms, CO2 injection systems use compressed CO2, available in tanks (or bottles) in a range of sizes. Many growers keep a backup tank or more on hand to use while empties are being refilled.

Managed by a regulator (BCR-1) and a cycle timer or CO2 controller, CO2 injection systems use a solenoid valve to quickly activate and deactivate CO2 production. This method offers precise maintenance of CO2 levels, and even greater efficiency becomes possible when using a controller equipped with fuzzy logic technology.

Another major benefit of CO2 injection is that there are no byproducts which must be addressed, whereas heat, water and carbon monoxide are all potential byproducts of a CO2 generator. Compressed CO2 can be more expensive than operating a CO2 generator, however, making it an impractical choice for large areas.

    A basic CO2 injection setup:

In this typical configuration, CO2 tubing leads from the regulator to the back of an oscillating fan which helps distribute the CO2 evenly over the plant canopy. A CO2 controller operates the solenoid valve of the regulator to maintain CO2 at a precise set point.

A Word on VentilationFor any CO2 system to be efficient and effective, its important to seal the room completely. Open or drafty windows, leaks, or other exchanges of outside air may result in CO2 loss. If exhausting air to the outdoors is unavoidable, use an atmosphere controller to coordinate CO2 production with ventilation. This will prevent the two systems from running simultaneously and exhausting CO2 before it reaches the plants.

    Recommended controllers for CO2 injection: BDAC-2, BDCC-1

    29

  • CO2 GeneratorsPopular for larger grow rooms, CO2 generators burn liquid propane or natural gas to create CO2 via combustion. Generators range in size based on the number of burners they contain. Each burner generates a specific amount of CO2: the more burners, the higher the output. Many generators also include the option to disable or remove individual burners, reducing the amount of CO2 produced.

Spacing out multiple generators where feasible is preferable to using only one large unit. This helps to evenly distribute CO2 over the plant canopy and avoids creating hot spots of excessive CO2 concentration. Adequate air circulation is also imperative with the use of CO2 generators. Strategically placed oscillating, floor or wall fans assist in dispersing CO2 and dissipate the heat units generate while operating.

In addition to heat, the combustion process generates water which takes the form of moisture in the air. Grow room humidity must therefore be monitored closely to avoid problems with fungus and disease. And, while most CO2 generators include redundant safety features to prevent malfunction or improper operation, it is important to keep in mind that the incomplete burning of fossil fuels can produce deadly carbon monoxide. A carbon monoxide detector in the grow area is recommended as a precaution.

Heat and moisture can usually be easily addressed with the proper climate control equipment, and obtaining fuel for CO2 generators is generally more economical than compressed CO2, especially in large quantity. This makes CO2 generator systems the preferred choice of commercial growers and mid- to large-scale hobby growers.

    A basic CO2 generator setup:

In this configuration, a CO2 controller powers the CO2 generator on and off, while a wall fan helps circulate air and disperse CO2.

    * This chart provides the time and flow rate needed to raise the ambient level of CO2 in the given area by 1,100 ppm. CO2 supplementation is only beneficial during photosynthesis (when the lights are ON). The frequency of cycles required depends on the size and number of plants in the growing environment. Following these usage rates will result in an average ambient CO2 level between 1,400 and 1,500 ppm.
