By: Chip Utterback, President & CEO

Last year, BST was represented at the San Antonio Alzheimer’s walk by one resident and two staff members. The two staff members promised the resident, “We can and will do better.” It was a months-long process involving many staff and residents culminating in a day filled with BST volunteers manning the Flower Garden and the BST Booth along with more walkers than we could fit in one photo. When all was said and done, we kept our promise. In fact, at last Wednesday’s Appreciation Lunch for those organizations

Way to go Blue Skies of Texas Residents, Staff and Board Members! Your tenacity and volunteer spirit continue to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

SCAM ALERT By: Shirley Clay, Resident Counselor

New Scams to Watch For – Between now and mid-December is the time for Medicare Open Enrollment in which the insured can make changes to their Medicare coverage or change Medicare Advantage Plans. Of course scammers will also want to take advantage of this time to try and obtain Medicare numbers or other personal information. So be alert for calls or e-mails from people:

4 Deadline: Friday, Nov 11 @ Noon - [email protected]

Claiming to be from Medicare and requesting information to confirm billing information, such as account numbers or credit card numbers.

Offering free medical equipment – be wary, it could be a way of getting your personal information.

With unsolicited offers for medical equipment stating that your doctor ordered it. Verify with your doctor if you are unsure as this could be another way of getting personal information.

Calling or e-mailing stating you should or have to change your Medicare plan. A Medicare insured person can make changes during this time of year but may not need to do so. Never make a hasty decision over the phone to change your plan. If you have questions, you can always ask the staff in your doctor’s office for assistance. The staff in the BST Wellness Office is always happy to answer questions in regard to Medicare plans.

VETERANS DAY CEREMONY By: Russ McCarthy

On Friday, Nov 11, at 11am at the flag pole, there will be a Veterans Day Ceremony for Blue Skies of Texas West residents. Our Distinguished Visitors for this ceremony are the residents of The Vista and Liberty House. A separate inside ceremony will be held for our Distinguished Visitors from Freedom House at 1pm

in the Freedom House lobby. We encourage as many as possible to attend both ceremonies. All Attendees who have (even if you can’t get it all buttoned) a uniform, flight suit, flight jacket, party suit and etc., are encouraged to wear them, in remembrance of our departed comrades. After the ceremony, we encourage you to visit with our Distinguished Visitors. You may see a smile cross their face as they recognize a uniform that reminds them of happy memories. If you are unable to attend the ceremony, but are eating lunch in the dining room on Nov 11, we ask you also wear your uniform. This year’s ceremony will feature the 2015 & 2016 National Champion Air Force Junior ROTC Drill Team from John Jay High School. The drill team cadets will be having lunch with us in the Dining Room following the ceremony. We need singles/couples to host one or two cadets each for the lunch following the ceremony. If you would like to be a host/hostess, please give me a call. Please take time from your schedule to join us in a salute to our Distinguished Visitors, our departed comrades, our men and women in uniform and to all veterans who have served in our Armed Services. In case of rain or cold weather, the ceremony will be held in the dining room.

STAFF

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION FUND By: BST West Resident Council

It has been a long-standing tradition for Blue Skies residents to express an additional “Thank You,” through the Employee Appreciation Fund. This fund is administered for us by our Finance Department, and you can participate by placing a check (please use checks instead of cash) into the slot marked “Employee Appreciation Fund” at the Front Desk or by making arrangements with Finance for a specific amount to be added to your Monthly Service Statement. These funds are gifted on our behalf twice a year (June and December) to all hourly paid employees (with the exception of the Beauty Salon employees – the only employees allowed to receive tips). Your check must be received at the Front Desk no later than Friday, Nov 25, by 5pm to be included in the upcoming distribution. Checks should be made payable to Blue Skies of Texas and marked for Employees’ Appreciation Fund. Thank you. Special Note: In addition to those individuals you see every day such as the wait staff, housekeepers and custodians, and Front Desk and Maintenance teams, we’ve been asked, “Who are some of the behind-the-scenes folks our Appreciation Fund reaches?” Here is a sampling (not all inclusive): Dishwashers, finance clerks, overnight Front Desk and Courtesy Officer teams, Human Resource Specialists, overnight shift nursing and assisted living teams, cooks and etc.

RESIDENTS’ CORNER

WITH DEEP APPRECIATION By: Allan Novak

In the past three months I have been humbled repeatedly by prayers, cards, visits, flowers, gifts, encouragement, telephone calls and more. I am overwhelmed by the kindnesses that came our way from residents, administrators, The Vista/Hospice staff and volunteers, chaplains, bus drivers and others. Thank you all for the support you gave us both throughout this period of my Nancy’s declining health.

THANK YOU By: Gayl Ganskow

A huge “Thank you” to all the special friends who somehow remembered my recent birthday. The many cards and heartfelt messages were certainly appreciated. I never thought about being this age, but - the years don’t count when you’re happy and content. Actually, inside I feel like I’m in my 20’s. Life at our wonderful Blue Skies West is filled with caring residents, and I feel blessed to be here. A special “Thank you” to Nita and Jim Peck, the super party planners for the luncheon after our inspiring LH church service.

BIRDHOUSES FOR THE VISTA By: Ernest Kircus

The Wood Hobby Shop at Blue Skies West is a well-equipped shop to satisfy the most advanced woodworker. Al Buie is an active participant in the shop and has completed numerous projects for members of the Village. Recently Al was the designer, draftsman, engineer and “constructor” of twelve birdhouses for residents of the Vista to paint and hang in the trees outside their windows. The photo shows Al Buie presenting birdhouses to The Vista Activities Coordinator, Paula Qualls.

SOCIAL CLUB BOXES By: Frank Sherman & Tom Jones

There are still a few Social Club Liquor Boxes available for purchase. Lifetime members pay only $450 for lifetime use of the box. Monthly members pay a $50 refundable deposit and $10 per month. Lifetime membership is the most economical for year-round residents. Monthly membership is probably best for those who live here part time. The Social Club meets on the last Friday of the month from 5 to 8pm, with shared snacks and your own drinks. However, the boxes are available 24/7, except when the Road Runner Lounge is reserved by another group. Set-ups and ice are available Monday through Saturday during the dinner hours. If you would like more information, call Frank Sherman.

12 Deadline: Friday, Nov 11 @ Noon - [email protected]

CASTROVILLE LIBRARY By: Allan Novak

We will learn not only what happens to our brain as we age and what cognitive changes we can expect, but also what we can do to keep our minds and brains healthy! The group meets at the Castroville Library on Monday evenings from 6:30-8pm. There is no cost and new participants are welcome at any time. For more information, contact the Library at 830-931-4095.

REFURBISHED COMPUTERS By: Thrift Shop Team

Remember, your Thrift Shop sells refurbished computers at significantly reduced prices and also sustains computers in The Vista, Liberty House, Freedom House and the Ham Club. If you donate your old, used computer, we will wipe the hard drive to ensure removal of any sensitive donations. We would appreciate whole systems, especially old laptops, but can use any parts such as RAM, SSDs, displays, graphics cards, remote drives, backup supplies, etc. If you have any computers or spare parts, contact Keith Shumaker after Saturday, Oct 26.

RESIDENT CONCERT SERIES By: Joe Manci, Concert Committee

Pianist Alexandre “Sasha” Moutouzkine and his brother, flutist Ivan Mutuzkin, both world-renowned musicians in their own right, performed a wonderful concert for residents and guests on Sunday, Oct 30.This was Sasha’s fifth and Ivan’s second performance at Blue Skies. Among the selections, Sasha performed two études by Scriabin, dedicating a

Ivan’s solo performances included the Gavotte from the Partita No.3 in E by J.S. Bach and La Danse de la Chèvre by Honneger. Following renditions of three themes by famed film composer Ennio Morricone, the duo finished with the Fantasy on Themes from Verdi’s “La Traviata,” featuring a masterful performance from Ivan. PRAY FOR OUR NATION By: Ren Vandesteeg

Residents are invited to join others to pray for our nation on the first and third Thursdays of every month, at 10am in the Helen LeMay Room. Our country needs our prayers. Please pray!

ELECTION DAY PRAYERS By: Ren Vandesteeg

“The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with.” James 5: 16, The Holy Bible According to http://www.pattonhq.com/prayer.html, General George Patton wrote, “Those who pray do more for the world than those who fight . . . We must . . . instruct . . . every fighting man to pray as well as fight . . . spiritual alert minorities carry the burdens and bring the victories. Urge all of your men to pray, not alone in church, but everywhere. Pray when driving . . . fighting . . . alone . . . with others . . . by night and by day.” As Election Day arrives next Tuesday, let’s pray for God’s will and leadership for our nation. To Him be the glory.

BST WEST PICKLEBALL ASSOCIATION By: Tom Carter

Join us to play the fastest growing sport in the USA and have some fun with other BST residents and guests. We have two options for playing on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pickleball is played on a small court (about one-half of a tennis court), and provides seniors an ideal venue for getting exercise. Gender or strength is no advantage in this sport. We have the required paddles, balls, nets, etc., so come out, and we’ll show you how easy it is to play. For further information, contact Helen Vanderneck, Don & Debbie Christian, Keith & Susan Shumaker or Tom Carter. Playing dates and times: Tuesdays & Thursday, 8am - A group meets in the BST West Main Lobby to caravan to Medina Base to play indoors at the Medina Fitness Center from about 8:30-10:30am. Tuesday and Thursday, 8-10am – Another group plays at the BST West tennis courts (except on inclement weather days when everyone goes to Medina). Saturdays, 8-10am - We play only at the BST West tennis courts.

NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE By: Gayl Ganskow

If you are familiar with the card game Gin Rummy, you have a head start to understanding Mah Jongg (MJ). There are no playing cards here because in MJ you mix, pick, discard and arrange your tiles in combinations for a winning hand. The ideal game is played with four players; however, two or three players can play and have a great time as well. Come and enjoy! We play three times a week, no sign up, just show up.

25 Deadline: Friday, Nov 11 @ Noon - [email protected]

Playing Session: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, All B&A Days, 2nd Wed of each month in Card Room 112. The Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop on the first floor. Fridays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, and Saturdays, 1-3:30pm in CC1.

CHINESE MAH JONGG By: Martha Wesson

Chinese Mah Jongg is back! ...maybe. Edie Talley has agreed to help start up this game again if enough people are interested. The time and place will be determined by the players, so if you would like to play again or learn this easy version of Mah Jongg after the first of the year, call Martha Wesson who will help set up a schedule and get things rolling once more!

WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG By: Martha Wesson

Wright Pat Mah Jongg is a very social game. We talk a lot and care about each other. Even though we keep track of the winners, the real appeal of Tuesday afternoons is the camaraderie. We try to Mah Jongg (win a round), but even if we don’t, it doesn’t bother us too much. Granted, it’s probably a little more fun if we do, but overall we are there for the change from everyday routines and worries, a bit of a mental challenge and the laughter that results from the friendly sharing of good luck and bad breaks. We are happy for each other’s wins and the occasional occurrences such as, Evelyn’s six flowers which resulted in a bouquet or Carolyn’s unprecedented twelve Mah Jonggs in one afternoon leading to her being up 216 points at the final count, or Katherine winning her Angel hand with all four jokers. Lynn won ten hands in two weeks while others felt fortunate to get any…but there’s no true rivalry or hurt feelings - it’s just all in fun and the awareness that next week someone else might have a winning streak. If this is the way you would like to spend a couple of hours each week, join us in CC3 on Tuesdays at 1pm!

ROADRUNNER GOLF TOURNAMENT By: Ernest Kircus

The Blue Skies West members of the Roadrunner golf group held a tournament at the Golf Club of Texas on Sunday, Oct 13. This was a unique tournament where participants could only use three clubs plus a putter. Twenty members participated in the fun day with the following results: Tom Young won first place low net (63); Mike Kasper won low gross (72) and closest to the hole on number three green; Dick Fouss won closest to the hole on number twelve green. The photo shows Tom Young with the tournament trophy.

BOCCE By: David Capito

A bocce group is forming to play at the court located between the tennis courts and basketball half-court. If you are a seasoned player, or have never played and would like to try it, please give me a call and leave your name(s) and you will be added to

26 Deadline: Friday, Nov 11 @ Noon - [email protected]

the group of over 30. I have placed the bocce balls, scoreboard and bocce rules handouts in the room next to the bocce court, which will be open from 6am-10pm daily. If you would like to play, but don't have an opponent or partner, please call someone on your list. If you don’t have a Bocce Roster, give me a call and I will email it or put a copy in your mailbox. A light has been installed for late evening play and the court has been cleaned. Lori provided us with very comfortable padded chairs for players and observers. The pads will be kept in the building when not in use to prevent sun damage. Since bocce is very easy to learn and an enjoyable game, invite a friend(s) to join us. Those of us who play regularly have a lot of fun and would like to have more people join us.
