Lou Donaldson is very honored to be performing at Blue Note Jazz Club with his world class quartet, with whom he has been touring the world playing festivals and clubs for the past two de-cades.

Awarded an NEA Jazz Masters fel-lowship in 2013, Donaldson has been termed a “truly unique and absolutely indispensable creative voice in mod-ern jazz whose greatness stretches from being one of sublime virtuosos of swinging bebop and hard bop to being the creator of his own genre of funky jazz boogaloo that has profoundly in-

Donaldson played an absolutely in-valuable role in the creation and build-ing of the classic Blue Note Records label, and the assembly and musical development of the the classic Jazz Messengers bands that originally fea-tured Clifford Brown, Art Blakey, Hor-ace Silver, Gene Ramey, Hank Mobley, and many other of the greatest creative virtuosos of the this entire era of mod-ern jazz expression. n

KENNY WERNER Kenny Werner is a world-class pianist and composer. His prolific output of compositions, recordings, and publi-cations continue to impact audiences around the world. Born in Brooklyn in 1951 and growing up on Long Island, Werner began playing and perform-ing at a young age, first recording on television at the age of 11. He formed his own trio in 1981 with drummer Tom Rainey and bassist Ratzo Harris. He has worked closely with legendary har-monica player Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Joe Lovano, Ari Hoenig, Jo-hannes Weidenmueller, Lionel Loueke and Miguel Zenon and countless oth-ers. A Guggenheim Fellowship Award winner, Werner is also a world-class educator. His groundbreaking book on improvisation, Effortless Mastery (2006), is required reading for all aspir-ing jazz musicians.

JANIS MANN “A first class jazz singer!” Scott Yanow, jazz critic and author, proclaims. At once both a striking song stylist and a fearless improviser, Janis Mann is that rare artist who can sweep you away with her captivating sound. She is a true jazz singer in the manner of Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, and Shirley Horn, yet with a sound all her own. An excit-ing and engaging performer, Janis’ rich timbre, flexibility, and range often invite comparisons to Sarah Vaughan. “Janis Mann continues to generate some of the best vocal music anywhere.” These words from Cadence Magazine review-er Alan Bargebuhr confirm what fans of this award-winning singer have known for years. Some of the jazz luminaries she has sung or recorded with include: Roy Haynes, Diane Schuur, Jack Shel-don, Jon Mayer, Ross Tompkins, John Heard, Red Holloway, and Dave Frish-berg, earning their praises. n

The hard-swinging trio of Donald Harri-son, Ron Carter, and Billy Cobham first demonstrated its strong chemistry and affinity for standards on its 2004 record-ing, Heroes. In April 2005, Half Note Records captured the trio live during a week-long series of shows at Blue Note Jazz Club, producing the album New York Cool (2005). Half Note again re-corded the trio in action at the club sev-eral years later releasing the album This is Jazz near the end of 2011. AllMusic.com called the outing “the finest offering by this trio to date.” This week at Blue Note, the band looks build on its musical achievements with another hotly-antici-pated residency.

DONALD HARRISONDonald Harrison is rightly regarded as one of the most influential musicians on the scene today. The son of late great Big Chief Donald Harrison, he began working with Roy Haynes at age 19 and Jack McDuff at age 20. He joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers at age 21 and soon co-led a deeply influential group with Terence Blanchard. In addi-tion to his collaborations with luminaries like Christian Scott, Christian McBride, Cyrus Chestnut, Lena Horne, and Eddie Palmieri, he is a prodigious bandlead-er, having released a number of well-received records, the latest of which is Quantum Leap (2011).

RON CARTERRon Carter is among the most original, prolific, and influential bassists in jazz. With more than 2,000 albums to his credit, he has recorded with many of music’s greats: Tommy Flanagan, Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, Jaki Byard, Eric Dolphy, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley, and Bobby Tim-mons. From 1963 to 1968, he was also a member of the legendary Miles Davis Quintet.

BILLY COBHAMEver since his breakthrough in the early ‘70s as a founding member of the Ma-havishnu Orchestra and progenitor of the jazz fusion movement, drummer Billy Cobham has remained a tireless musical explorer. In addition to his work with Ma-havishnu, he also co-founded the fusion group Dreams, contributed to Miles Davis’s seminal Bitches Brew (1970) and Tribute to Jack Johnson (1971), and has led his own solo career, beginning with his debut release Spectrum in 1973. Recent years have seen him touring and recording with his “Art of Jazz” ensembles and continuing to release solo albums, including his recent effort Palindrome (2010). n

A remarkably gifted saxophonist-com-poser and in-demand session player, who performed and recorded with many of Brazil’s biggest stars such as Rosa Passos, Guinga and Simone, Sérgio Galvão is a talent worthy of wid-er recognition beyond his home base in Rio de Janeiro. His debut record, Phantom Fish, released in 2013, is a showcase for Galvão’s engaging tunes and potent playing on tenor and sopra-no saxes. As Spyro Gyra contemplates upcom-ing milestones in its storied career, it’s tempting to fall back on the Grateful Dead lyric, “What a long strange trip it’s been,” to describe the band’s jour-ney. During its career, the band has performed over five thousand shows, released 29 albums (not counting “Best Of” compilations), and sold over 10 mil-lion albums, while also achieving one Platinum and two Gold releases. As the band celebrates 35 years since its first release and looks forward to cel-ebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, it slows little sign of slowing down, gain-ing GRAMMY® nominations for each of its last four albums.

In its earliest days, Spyro Gyra took its cues from Weather Report and Re-turn to Forever – bands whose creative flights were fueled by a willingness to do things that had never been done before. “I believed that we were spring-ing from what Weather Report did,” says saxophonist and founding band member Jay Beckenstein. The first few years saw the group’s identity split into a dynamic live act and a producer-cen-tric recording process, borne out of the rotating cast of characters springing from the band’s jazz jam beginnings. The group’s early albums were the

product of the core band and a great number of the top session players in New York. In 1983, Beckenstein made the de-cision to make the albums the work of the band members he shared the stage with night after night, only sup-plementing with occasional guests. Although the band underwent several personnel changes in the ‘80s, these shifts slowed down about 20 years ago. Julio Fernandez became the group’s guitarist in 1984, Scott Am-bush assumed the bass chair in 1991, and Bonny Bonaparte took over the drums in 2006, making him the “new guy” at just over five years with the band.

After stretches releasing albums on the MCA, Amherst, GRP, and Heads Up International imprints, Spyro Gyra returned to Amherst for its latest re-lease, 2011’s A Foreign Affair. “I’ve always felt that music, and particularly instrumental music, has this non-liter-al quality that lets people travel to a place where there are no words,” says Beckenstein. “I would hope that when people hear our music or come to see us, they’re able to share that with us. That’s the truly glorious part of being a musician.” n

KYLE EASTWOOD As someone who has had a myriad of opportunities to shine, Kyle Eastwood has truly carved his own path as a mu-sician and his bass playing and com-posing talents reflect the richness and diversity of his experience.

No stranger to jazz music, at a young age his father, film actor/director Clint East-wood introduced him to jazz stars such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Dave Bru-beck, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis.

Kyle began playing electric bass in high school, learning R&B, Motown, and reg-gae tunes by ear. After studying with French bassist Bunny Brunel, he en-grossed himself in the New York and Los Angeles area jazz scene, and signed with Sony in 1998 where he released his debut recording From Here to There.

All proceeds from tonight’s concert will go towards Moody’s foundation, the CFNJ James Moody Jazz Scholarship Fund for Newark Youth.

For over six decades, saxophone master James Moody serenaded lov-ers with his signature song “Moody’s Mood for Love,” an improvisation on the chord progressions of “I’m in the Mood for Love.”

Born in Savannah, Georgia on March 26, 1925, and raised in Newark, New Jersey, James Moody took up the alto sax, a gift from his uncle, at the age of 16. Within a few years he fell under the spell of the deeper more full-bodied tenor saxophone after hearing Buddy Tate and Don Byas perform with the Count Basie Band at the Adams The-ater in Newark, New Jersey.

In 1946, following service in the Unit-ed States Air Force, Moody joined the seminal bebop big band of Dizzy Gil-lespie, beginning an association that - on stage and record, in orchestras and small combos - afforded a young Moody worldwide exposure and ample opportunity to shape his improvisa-tional genius. Upon joining Gillespie, Moody was at first awed, he now ad-mits, by the orchestra’s incredible array of talent, which included Milt Jackson, Kenny Clark, Ray Brown, Thelonius Monk. The encouragement of the leg-endary trumpeter-leader, made his mark on the young saxophonist. His now legendary 16-bar solo on Gil-lespie’s Emanon alerted jazz fans to an emerging world-class soloist.

During his initial stay with Gillespie, Moody also recorded with Milt Jack-son for Dial Records in 1947. One year later he made his recording debut as

a leader James Moody and His Bop Men for (Blue Note).

In 1949 Moody moved to Europe where in Sweden he recorded the master-piece of improvisation for which he is renowned, Moody’s Mood for Love. Returning to the States in 1952 with a huge “hit” on his hands, Moody em-ployed vocalist Eddie Jefferson. Also, working with him during that period were Dinah Washington and Brook Benton. In 1963 he rejoined Gillespie and performed off and on in the trum-peter’s quintet for the remainder of the decade. Moody moved to Las Vegas in 1973 and had a seven year stint in the Las Vegas Hilton Orchestra, doing shows for Bill Cosby, Ann-Margaret, John Davidson, Glen Campbell, Lib-erace, Elvis Presley, The Osmonds, Milton Berle, Redd Foxx, Charlie Rich, and Lou Rawls to name a few.

WITH RENEE ROSNES (MUSICAL DIRECTOR), PAQUITO D’RIVERA, JAMES CARTER, ANTONIO HART, GARY SMULYAN, FRANK GREENE, GREG GISBERT, BILL CHARLAP, TODD COOLMAN, ADAM NUSSBAUM, AND ALEXIS COLE + SURPRISE SPECIAL GUESTS!

Moody returned to the East Coast and put together his own band again - much to the delight of his dedicated fans. In 1985, Moody received a GRAMMY® Award Nomination for Best Jazz Instru-mental Performance for his playing on Manhattan Transfer’s Vocalese album thus setting the stage for his re-emer-gence as a major recording artist.

Moody’s 1986 (RCA/NOVUS) debut Something Special ended a decade-long major label recording hiatus for the versatile reedman. His follow-up re-cording, Moving Forward showcased his hearty vocals on What Do You Do and his interpretive woodwind wizardry on such tunes as Giant Steps and Au-tumn Leaves.

Music was more than a livelihood to Moody, so much so that portions of Sweet and Lovely, dedicated to his wife, Linda, figured prominently in the saxophonist’s wedding ceremony on April 3, 1989. As well as being on the album, Gillespie was best man at the wedding for his longtime friend. The bride and groom walked down the aisle to Gillespie’s solo on Con Alma, then everyone exited the church to the vamp on Melancholy Baby. As their first act of marriage Linda and James Moody took communion accompanied by the groom’s recording of Sweet and Lovely. In 1990, Moody and Gillespie received a Grammy Award Nomination for their rendition of Gillespie’s Get the Booty, which showcases scatting at its best. Moody returns the soprano sax to his woodwind arsenal on Honey, his nickname for his wife, Linda, and Moody’s last recording for (RCA/NO-VUS).

On March 26th, 1995 Moody got the surprise of his life with a birthday party

in New York. It was an evening of his-torical significance for Jazz with many guest stars and Bill Cosby as the em-cee. It can be heard on Telarc’s record-ing, Moody’s Party-- James Moody’s 70th, Birthday Celebration, Live at the Blue Note.

In 1995 Moody’s (Warner Bros.) release of Young at Heart, was a tribute to songs that are associated with Frank Sinatra. With an orchestra and strings many people feel this is among the most beautiful of all James Moody re-cordings.

Moody’s last recording for Warner Bros. is Moody Plays Mancini which show-cases Moody on all of his horns and flute. A tribute to the American icon Henry Mancini.

Moody’s 2004 release of Homage on the Savoy Label has been a great cause for celebration. His first new studio al-bum in 6 years, the aptly named Hom-age is a tribute to Moody featuring new tunes specially written for him by the likes of Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Ken-ny Barron, Horace Silver, Herbie Han-cock, David Hazeltine and Marc Cop-land. Bob Belden produced the project.

His last CD, 4B just won a Grammy Award in 2011 for best instrumental jazz recording. Featuring standards and two originals by pianist Kenny Barron, the recording is a testament to Moody’s strength both as a saxophonist and in-didivdual well into his 80s.

At 85 years young, Moody left us on De-cember 9, 2010. Tonight’s concert is a celebration of life and love with so many incredible musicians that have been taught and influenced by Moody. n
