BLUE GROWTH in Horizon 2020
2014-2020
HORIZON 2020
Christos Fragakis Deputy Head of Unit
Management of natural resources DG Research & Innovation
Info-Day, Paris 24th January 2014
BLUE GROWTH FOCUS AREA
• Adopt a strategic approach and maximize impact of activities to address large and complex ocean challenges which are cross-cutting in nature
• Catalyze efforts of different Societal Challenges or H2020 priorities to address challenges that could not be tackled by a single Societal Challenge and necessitate integrated approaches
• Support marine and maritime research to underpin the Integrated Maritime Policy, the Blue Growth Strategy, and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
• A new activity (2.5) was introduced to SC2 Specific Programme by the legislator to deal with these cross-cutting marine issues
Why a Blue Growth Focus Area in H2020 ?
2
BLUE GROWTH FOCUS AREA
Five priority areas :
1.Sustainably exploiting the diversity of marine life
2.New offshore challenges
3.Exploitation of deep sea resources – deep sea mining (not covered in 2014-2015)
4.Ocean observation technologies/systems
5.Socio-economic aspects
What is the Blue Growth Focus Area in H2020 ?

Policy Research and Innovation
International cooperation: The Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance
Launched in May 2013 (Galway Statement) under Irish Presidency with Commissioners Geoghegan-Quinn & Damanaki
Goal: To better understand the Atlantic Ocean and Ecosystem and to promote the sustainable management of its resources. The work will also study the interplay of the Atlantic Ocean with the Arctic Ocean, particularly with regards to climate change. In WP 2014-2015: Several topics are identified as relevant for the Galway Statement. Participation of USA and Canada is encouraged but not exclusive
