• - 3.6 million jobs in the EU maritime economy, 180 billion GVA

• - Traditional sectors (shipbuilding, fisheries) and innovative industries (renewables, biotech)

• - Volume sectors (maritime tourism) and niche segments (seabed mining) – but all with potential

• - 1200 commercial ports, 764 large ports

- "Blue Growth" concept: Links maritime policy to EU's jobs and growth agenda.

- EU-wide tools for marine planning, seabed mapping and marine surveillance - to promote innnovation and cut costs

- Strategies for 'sea-basins' – targeted cooperation for growth and better use of EU structural funds

- Focused policies for 5 priority sectors – Maritime tourism, ocean energy, aquaculture, blue biotech and seabed mining

- International: launched cooperation with US, Canada and non-EU countries in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (in particular Turkey); Arctic strategy

the EMFF

• Maritime and Coastal Tourism Communication (20/02/2014) • Programme of 14 actions in Communication on coastal tourism

• Horizon 2020 is strongly supporting the Blue Growth strategy

with a dedicated Focus Area for the 2014/2015 WP.

• The EU commitment was translated into the current Blue Growth calls with 195M€ in the 2014-2015 Work Programme and 57M€ "earmarked" as Galway Statement follow-up calls.

• International cooperation is needed to join forces globally in order to tackle global challenges in these areas, and the Transatlantic Ocean Research Alliance.
