the roofing centre conceptIn the 1970’s and 1980’s certain sectors of building materials separated out from builders merchants into specializes depots - plumbing centres, tile centres, flooring centres, etc. Having been wholesaling roofing materials through builders merchants for many years, we were aware of many deficiencies - lack of stocks - lack of space - lack of product knowledge - lack of choice - lack of technical advice - no stocks of reclaimed materials.

We stock over 1 million items, new and reclaimed, slates, tiles and ridges, etc., at 2 depots. We are insured and

licensed to salvage old slates and tiles. We trade-in old slates and tiles against new roofs.

why use reclaimed slate/tilesOld slates have been re-used for generations in the Conservation of historic buildings. In recent years demand increased as more buildings are being LISTED.

Demand for reclaimed slates and tiles is driven by Building Legislation, consumer demand and the fact that many churches, courthouses, railway stations and great houses are well over 100 years old and their roofs require upgrading. The easy way out and the cheapest solution is to put on Fibre-cement slates or concrete tiles but you are unlikely to get past your local planning authority. Planners are ensuring that homeowners protect our built HERITAGE for future generations.

A re-roof with shining new fire-cement slates, adjacent to other buildings with old blue bangor slates is incongruous and not acceptable. Equally a large new concrete tile, beside a weather beaten Marley Ludlow Plus tile, on an extension of a 1960’s house looks cheap and reduces the value of the property.

Roofing contractors and customers work closely with us prior to undertaking a re-roof. We will advise on the reclaimed materials available including budget cost of supply. This enables us to have materials available on time, prevent time wasting and ensures that re-roofs match the original and comply with planning regulations.

natural slateNatural slate is a dense fine-grained metamorphic rock produced by the compression of various sediments (as clay or shale) that can be easily divided into thin pieces. It is frequently grey in colour especially when seen en masse covering roofs. However, slate occurs in a variety of colours even from a single locality.

Natural slate is probably the best roofing material in the world. Not only is it good quality but it will outlast other roofing materials. When fitted properly it can outlive the lifetime of its building. The market for second hand slates proves this. It retains its colour and although it may weather with age, it will not fade.

It is an age where there is great concern over the environment and climate change. It is up to each and every one of us to help reduce this impact. One of the ways to do this is to select materials with the lowest overall contribution to emissions and environmental impact. Natural slate requires only minimal processing, has the lowest embodied energy of all the roofing materials. This makes natural slate an environmentally sound product and an economical choice for your roof.

blue bangor slateWelsh//Slate more commonly known as Blue Bangor Slates in Ireland are proved to be the toughest natural slate product known to man. They are produced in Bethesda, North Wales. The Quarry has been in operation for more than 400 years and is acknowledged as one of the finest slate deposits in the world. They can be seen on prestigious buildings throughout the country.

All Welsh Slates meet EN12326-1:2004 and BS680 standards. Welsh Slates are guaranteed for 100 years from date of Installation, when fixed in accordance with the current codes of practice for slating and tiling. (BS5534 and BS8000 part 6)

Lord Penrhyn (Douglas Pennant) built the slate jetty at the Port of Bangor. This port was in the main shipping lane between England and Ireland so ships captains purchased loads of slates regularly which they sold to Dublin Merchants. This contributed to the popularity of Blue Bangor Slates in Ireland.
