Message from the Principal Term 3 has been a busy term for staff and students with: • Staff Development Day 3 • Parent/Teacher meetings Years 9 & 10 • Subject Selection for Years 8 and 10 • The Reading Program with Homebush Primary School • Sydney Thunder Leadership Program • Winter Sport Finals and Grand Finals • Staff development Twilight evening Session 1 • Regional Athletics • Blue and Maroon Assemblies • Year 12 Trial Examinations • And too many Excursions, Activities and Events to mention.

You will find many of these activities highlighted throughout this newsletter.

Staff Development We began the Term with our third School Development Day, on Monday 3rd July 2018. A very successful day focussing on:

• The new Homebush Boys High School Literary Strategy – presentation and workshop of ALARM (A Learning And Responding Matrix) for all staff.

• Driving our School Plan – developing milestone to ensure that our targets and goals are on track. • The Teacher Quality Project – introduction, focus and our project.

We followed this day up on Thursday 16th August with our first Twilight School Development Evening. This was the first of four Twilight School Development Evenings that we will run in Semester 2 of this year. The four Twilight sessions will replace the two School Development Day at the end of the year. The focus for this evening was further learning and practice with using ALARM to support our students. The advantage of running these sessions during the year, rather than on the last two days of Term 4, is that teachers have to opportunity of implementing the strategies learnt from these sessions immediately in their classes.

Homebush Boys High School Literary Strategy

We have begun implementing components of our new Literacy strategy.

• ALARM - After running all staff through ALARM in the development sessions mentioned above, staff are now developing examples to use in class with students.

• Year 8 Literacy-Numeracy Handbook – Year 8 boys attended an assembly on Tuesday 28 August where Mr Bawden introduced our new literacy/numeracy support program. Each Boy was given a Literacy and numeracy handbook and told to take them home and put them in a safe place so that they may refer to them as necessary. I encourage all Year 8 parents to ask your son for a quick look at the handbook.

• Year 8 Moodle exercises – An exercise will be put up on Moodle every week for Year 8 students to attempt, based on reading comprehension, writing or numeracy. These exercises are in addition to work completed for subjects at school and should take about 30minutes to complete. Each exercise attempted will be marked and feedback provided. Students must complete the exercise before the next Sunday, otherwise they will not be marked. The first exercise is available now and due by Sunday 9/9/18. I encourage parents to check that their son is attempting this work. Please note that this is a part of our support strategy to help prepare your son to meet the standards required to qualify for a HSC when they attempt the minimum standards test in Year 10.

• Homework club is open on Monday and Tuesday afternoons in the Library from this coming Monday 3/9/18. All students are welcome, a teacher will be supervising to offer assistance each day for an hour after the end of school. A great time for students to catch up on work, seek assistance or access the computers for assignments.

Outstanding Student Achievement

Blue and Maroon assemblies

Last Term we introduced Blue and Maroon assemblies to recognise students who consistently demonstrate outstanding effort in their studies. Last Thursday we held assemblies for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. Students who are given excellent effort in all their subjects are awarded a Blue award and a Maroon Award is given to students who achieve excellent effort in all but one course. I have included a couple of photos of our award recipients on the right and on the cover, congratulations to all students who received an award.

For those who did not receive an award this time, I encourage you to strive to get one next time.

Year 12 School Holiday Workshops

Welcome back everyone from a productive holiday break. I came into school several times during the break to do a bit of work and found a number of staff and Year 12 students busy in HSC workshops. It was great to see the commitment and dedication of both the staff and students at this school. Year 12 really appreciated these valuable lessons and I would like to thank all the staff on their behalf.

Work Health and Safety

On Tuesday 24 July, Karla Dimeglio, our new WHS consultant, came to visit our school to advise us on some of our school’s WHS concerns. She visited room 65 in TAS first to inspect some machinery and then Mr Elgood and I took her for a tour around certain areas of the school that we have been concerned about. The tour included the front foyer, the administration area, demountables and pathways surrounding the demountables, the problem areas in the playground and some classrooms. Mr Elgood also raised a number of issues in relation to the school not effectively accommodating all staff and student needs and the huge lack of storage. She was able to advise us on a number of areas but urgently requested that we fence off the lower area under the arches as there were a number of trip hazards and areas that needed immediate attention. The school is in the process of investigating ways in ensuring that that area is safe for both staff and students.

HBHS Subject Selection Evening Tuesday 31 July

Year 8 – 9

The evening began at 4:30pm for registration, however, a significant number of students and parents turned up as early as 3:30 pm, as they were very keen to find out information about their subject choices. The hall filled up very quickly by 5:00pm and parents commented on the valuable and comprehensive information they received both in the hall and during the faculty information sessions. Parents were also particularly interested in our Literacy and Numeracy focus and managed to spend quite lot of time with Mr Bawden after the presentations.

Year 10 - 11

We also had the Year 10 -11 Subject Selection Evening immediately after Year 8. Once again the hall was filled by eager parents and Year 10 students. The talks in the hall provided valuable information to both students and their parents on the NESA requirements, Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses and the Subject Selection Process at our school. Parents were also interested about the HSC Minimum Standards and the faculty information provided by the Head Teachers and staff of all the Key Learning Areas. Ms Greenshields (Senior Pathways Officer) also provided us with up to date information on VET courses. Year 10 Market Day was held on Friday 3 August, and this day also allowed students to obtain more detailed subject specific information from their teachers in a smaller classroom setting, where they could ask questions and seek advice.

Year 8-10 Subject Selection Process In the last couple of weeks both Year 8 and 10 students have been selecting their subject choices online through EDVAL web choices. They received information during the Year 10 Market Day, Year meetings and through their DoE student email accounts. Students have been completing their choices online and we have also been successfully conducting Year 10 Student/ Parent interviews for our students. We are in the process of finalising these choices and chasing up any students who have not yet submitted their choices.

Students will be informed of the outcome of their choices in the coming weeks. Sydney Thunder Leadership Program On Thursday 9 August, the Sydney Thunder Leadership Program ran another session with a small group of our students. It is a great opportunity for our students to build their leadership and team building skills whilst also developing their cricket skills. Ms Chapman has been actively involved in organising this great initiative and liaising with our students and the Sydney Thunder staff. Our students have responded positively in the program which provides greater opportunities for our students.

Year 10 HSC Minimum Standards Online Practice Test Feedback

On Friday 10 August, Ms Crosby and Mr Abbou organised feedback sessions for our Year 10 students in the area of Writing, Reading and Numeracy. These were very valuable sessions for our students as they were provided detailed individualised feedback in small group settings. A

significant number of our students will be sitting the online tests this term and all students will be sitting for the tests next term. I would like to thank Ms Crosby, Mr Abbou and Mr Bawden, together with other teachers, for providing ongoing literacy and numeracy support for our students. Year 12 Trials

Year 12 Trials are running smoothly and the students seemed settled. Year 12 students seem to be well prepared and organised this year. A large number of them are arriving early for their examinations and there have only been a few late or sick students. We are in the final stages of the examinations

16s Futsal Team Runners Up at State Championships

Congratulations to Mr D Carrozza and his 16s Futsal team who finished runners up at the state championships. This was a magnificent effort displayed by all the students in the team as they represented our school at an elite level. Well done to Mr D Carrozza for coaching the team and it was a wonderful opportunity for me to celebrate this fine achievement with the whole team at a celebratory luncheon on Friday 17 August. Congratulations once again to our young men.

Staff Development Day - Monday 23 July 2018

Term 3 began with a very productive Staff Development Day where staff had the opportunity to connect with our School’s strategic directions of Quality Teaching, Quality Learning and Quality Leadership. The day was spent on literacy strategies to strengthen student outcomes and support student growth in writing. Staff looked at how to plan, action and evaluate activities that will cater for student learning needs.

Year 9 and 10 Parent and Teacher interviews A great turnout on Thursday 26 July for the Year 9 and 10 parent and teacher interviews. Thank you to the parents and students who came along to discuss student progress with staff. I encourage all parents to take some time to reflect on your sons report and action the recommendations made by staff for improved performances in Semester 2. Over 78% of Year 9 and 10 reports were collected. This was our last parent and teacher opportunity in 2018. Do not hesitate to make contact with the School is you have academic or wellbeing concerns.

Staff Achievements

Well done to Ms Cheung on her achievement of the award of Teacher Proficiency. As a member of the Maths Faculty, I know how hard Ms Cheung has worked to perfect her craft and she has been inspirational in her delivery of content and the relationships she has made with staff and students. Well done Ms Cheung.

Year 7 and 8 Puppet Show

A Huge thank you to Mrs Zammit for the organisation of the Year 7 and 8 Bilingual Puppet Show incursion this term. A great event for the boys as they got the chance to hear and immerse themselves in a European language show. Many Year 7 students saw me after the

show to comment on how “funny and enjoyable it was” and how they were able to understand the dialogue and even laugh along with some of the French jokes.

Bien joué !

Study Skills

This term the Year 7 and 10 Study Skills workshops were rollout. Staff receive training on how to use the online study skills handbook (ELES). So far this term we have successfully completed two sets of workshops-Tuesday 7 August- Year 7 Study Skills period 2 & 3 and Friday 10 August – Year 10 Study Skills period 2 & 3

As always, parents are encouraged to go through the take home study skills resources with their sons as a way of best supporting their son’ study habits at

home. Thank you in advance to next week’s presenters. I sent emails out of all staff reminding them of these events.

The workshops were well received by our boys. I had the chance to present to 7G and the vibe was so positive. The boys were happy to have the opportunity to reflect on their learning and their learning styles as well as complete a SWOT analysis on their strengths and weaknesses. Mr Stinson from the Visual Arts department also commented to me that the workshops are a valuable resource that gives the student’s time to plan, reflet and act on their learning goals.

Friday’s Reading Buddy Program at Homebush Public School

The Friday reading program at HPS continues to be a success. Our reading buddies are always met with a flurry of enthusiasm from their younger fans and the day starts off with many laughs and “I have missed you” comments. The school executive and classroom teachers at HPS continue to comment on the maturity and manners of our students and how much they like how the boys are working well with their reading buddies and the visible progress they make through the positive and trusting relationships they have made with the Year 1 and 2 students.

Transition program with Homebush Public School

Many thanks to Mr Stinson and Mr Beal for the Visual Arts lessons they presented to the Year 6 Boys from HPS on Thursday 2 August 2018. The audience always presents with eagerness and bright eyes as they want to learn and experience what HBHS has to offer. Many of the boys have been offered a position at HBHS in 2019 and are happy to tell you that they will be part of the Bushy Boy culture soon. The feedback is so positive and the boys commented on Mr Stinson’s and Mr Beal’s enthusiasm. We value the opotunity to connect with our local feeder schhols and learn more about our future students.

Year 7 World of Maths Roadshow and Australian Mathematics Competition

On Tuesday 14 August, Year 7 Mathematics participated in the World of Maths Roadshow incursion. Our students were busily using their problem solving skills to make sense of the visual stimuli and respond to various questions. I enjoyed spending time with the Year 7 boys and hearing how they work as a group to encourage each other to plan, solve and explain mathematical concepts. The ability to touch, feel and experience is a massive step towards effective and timely problem solving. A great incursion for our Year 7 mathematicians. Many of these boys were also part of the 318 students who sat for the Australian Mathematics competition this term. Fingers crossed we hear of positive results soon.

Linkages program with Marie Bashir Public School

On Thursday 16 August, we welcomed the Year 5 and 6 students from Marie Bashir PS to our English classroom activity. Thank you to Ms Lea for hosting the students. The boys enjoy their visit to HBHS each term as much as we enjoy showcasing all that we offer at our wonderful school. Thursday’s vibe was once again complementary and the students chatted about how much fun they had and how much they enjoyed learning about the 7 pillars of leadership and the help they received from Adam El Masri Year 7. The boys met Mr Elgood for the first time and are looking forward to our Term 4 day, a PDHPE experience.

Year 8 Report Year 8 subject selections for 2019 electives are due now. Please place your printed sheets into the box outside Mrs Paleothodoros’ office.

On Monday 20th of August Year 8 are having a Year Assembly where 2017 School Captain will talk to the boys about resilience and the use of social media.

Parents can help their children to become more resilient, this information may help

Resilience is the ability to cope and thrive in the face of negative events, challenges or adversity.

Key attributes of resilience include:

• social competence

• a sense of agency or responsibility

• optimism

• a sense of purpose or hope for the future

• attachment to family, to school and to learning

• problem-solving skills

• effective coping style, pro-social values

• a sense of self-efficacy

• positive self-regard.

Research shows that young people with strong social and emotional skills are more likely be resilient.

You can support your child through:

• role modelling - how you express and manage emotions influences how they learn to express and manage their own emotions

• helping them name their positive emotions (such as proud, interested, excited, relieved) and negative emotions (such as angry, lonely, afraid, disappointed)

• recognising and naming your own feelings and emotions

• creating spaces for regular communication

• validating your child or young person’s feelings

• guiding them towards appropriate expressions of emotions

• setting consistent, clear and supportive boundaries for the expression of emotions.

On Thursday 23rd August we will be acknowledging the Year 8 students who have displayed diligent behaviour towards their learning in Semester 1 at our Blue and Maroon Assembly. I encourage all Year 8 students to set a goal to receive one of these awards for Semester 2.

Social Sciences Faculty Report Semester 1, 2018 has been an extremely busy semester for the Social Sciences Faculty. Below are some highlights of the events this semester.

Farewell Mr Pisani At the end of Term 1, Mr Pisani was successful in his merit application for a classroom teacher position at Bossley Park High School. Mr Pisani started teaching in the Social Sciences staffroom at Homebush in 2011. Over the past 7 years he has developed into an outstanding teacher. He is always involved in activities outside of the classroom setting, for example grade coaching, staff vs student sporting events, World’s Greatest Shave and Pink Ribbon Day to name a few. He brings a positive personality to the classroom and depending on who you ask, some even say he has a good sense of humour. However, at the drop of a hat he can get a class of 30 students to turn their laughs into serious work.

From a faculty perspective, Mr Pisani is an extremely professional and experienced teacher. He has taught Geography, Commerce, Economics, Legal Studies, Business Studies and Business Services. He is always supportive of other members of staff and is willing to lend a hand when it’s needed. On behalf of the Social Sciences faculty and school, we farewelled Mr Pisani during a school assembly in Term 1. Good luck on your new adventure Mr Pisani, you will be sorely missed. Commerce Competition “On the 18th of June, a selected group of Year 10 Commerce students ventured over to Birrong Boys to attend the FedEx Express / JA International Trade Challenge. Along with us Bushy Boys, Birrong Boys, Meriden Girls and Bass Hill High School were also there to compete. It was a thrilling and exciting day for all the boys, as we worked together with people from different schools and learned many new and interesting facts on the chosen country of Fiji. The challenge was to create goods or services for the communities of Fiji. Putting our brains to use, all of the groups created a wide range of products and services to help the people of Fiji - ranging from artificial plants, to

edible water bottles, as well as return and earn schemes. Special thanks goes out to Ms Coutinho and Ms Anton for giving us the opportunity to take part in this unique experience.” Written by Srikar Danthurty, Year 10 Commerce

National Tree Day National Tree Day was held on Sunday the 29th July, 2018 and as part of the Environment Club, Ms Coutinho invited students from Homebush Boys to get involved in this special day and help out by planting and caring for native trees and shrubs to improve the environment in which they live. “National Tree Day, why do it? It's is fun and rewarding. You feel great, as you know that you did something that can impact the environment. National Tree Day gave me the opportunity to learn how to plant trees, shrub and experience the taste of a veggie burger! It also gave me an insight into the detrimental effects of plastic. As there were many flowcharts that provided statistical information about the effects of plastic on the environment. National Tree Day is beneficial for us all, as you get to be part of an amazing community, whilst having a great time.” Written by Evan Xiong, Year 9 Geography and Environment Club Year 11 Studies of Religion Excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum and The Great Synagogue

In Term 2, Mr Kisso and Ms Coutinho accompanied their Year 11 Studies of Religion classes on an excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum and The Great Synagogue. Students had a fantastic time, learnt a lot and were commended on their outstanding behaviour. “It was a cold, exciting Monday. I know. When is a Monday exciting, but this one was. This Monday, was a Monday where Studies of Religion classes (both 1 & 2 Unit) got to experience and enjoy the Jewish religion, by traveling to the The Great Synagogue and the Sydney Jewish Museum, located in the city.

Our day began early, having to arrive at school by 8:30am, to ensure that we could catch a train and get to our first stop for the day, The Great Synagogue. As a group, we walked from Town Hall station to the synagogue. When we arrived at the synagogue, we arrived a bit early and were able to watch an informative video about the architecture, services and scripture that was presented by the synagogue, as well learn about the religion as a whole. We were then given a fun, informative seminar, presented by one of the rabbis, who was working in the synagogue. We were able to ask questions and achieved a deeper, detailed understanding of a Jewish adherents (follower of the faith) spiritual and everyday life.

After the synagogue we walked to a nearby Westfield, where we were able to buy or eat our lunch. After that, we made our way to the Sydney Jewish Museum. Once we arrived, we were given a presentation about the history of the Jewish faith, their temples and the architecture. After the lecture, we were able to, in groups, look at some of the exhibits, looked at how Jewish people have

contributed and impacted on Australian society, through various jobs and practices. On behalf of the class, we would like to thank Ms Coutinho and Mr Kisso for providing us with the opportunity to develop our understanding of the theory studied in class.” Written by Reilly Winch and Neeraj Mirashi, Year 11 Studies of Religion

Equivalence Point in Chemistry – RACI Titration Competition- 2018 On Friday, the 15th June, 19 Year 12 Chemistry students had the opportunity to compete in the RACI titration competition at Sydney University. The competition involves titrating or mixing an acid with a base to determine the concentration of the unknown base, then using that value to titrate against an unknown concentration of acetic acid which is found in vinegar to accurately determine its concentration. Students work in groups of three and have only one and a half hours to complete the task. This year 108 school and 1341 students competed at different venues around the state.
