We've stepped into a new financial year, and what could be a better way to begin the year than set SMART goals! It's time for us to set our KPTs for 2014-15. Abraham Lincoln once wrote, “A goal properly set is halfway reached." His quote implied that without setting a proper goal, achieving a target would not be possible. Setting a target aligned to

the Business Plan of the organisation is essential for achieving and sustaining organisational objectives. National Safety Week was observed from 4th to 9th March 2014 in all units/establishments. In this issue we bring you glimpses of the programs organised across locations. Observance of the week helped in spreading awareness on safety not only in the workplace but in all walks of life. During this time of the year, various parts of the country celebrate the beginning of a new year. We just celebrated

Gudi Padwa and Ugadi, and now gearing up to celebrate Poila Baisakh, Vishu, Puthandu, Rongali Bihu, Baisakhi etc. BLOOM wishes all of you Shubho Nabo Borsho and tons of joy, peace and prosperity. The 43rd National Safety Week was observed from 4th to 9th March, 2014 in all units/establishments

across locations. The week commenced on 4th March, observed as National Safety Day, with the safety

pledge taking ceremony and reading out of C&MD's message. The theme for National Safety Week 2014

was “Integration of OHS (Occupational Health & Safety) in Work Culture and Life Style”. In line with the

theme, various programs were organized over the week. The programs included extempore, quiz, skit, spot

the hazard contest, safety slogan & essay writing and poster competitions. Safety training programs and

workshops on handling & storage of dangerous goods, first aid and firefighting, screening of safety films

were also organized. The programs were successful in generating awareness on safety in all walks of life,

amongst employees.

A trial run of the plant machinery and equipment of the High Throughput Plant at Taloja was successfully

done on 28th March, 2014.

G&L, Silvassa invited local Fire Department Officials to conduct training on Fire Fighting Techniques in the

factory premises at Silvassa, on 6th March. Neighboring Companies were also invited to participate in the

training with the objective of sharing best practices on Safety. The program started with a brief

presentation on Safety by Mr. Jitendra Rohit and Mr. Aniket Preetish. The Fire Department Officials of

Silvassa then took a training session followed by a practical demo in the factory premises, in which the

workers and the firefighting team from SBUs: G&L and IP, Silvassa were trained. This initiative by Balmer

Lawrie was lauded by the Fire Dept Officials and the representatives from the other Companies as it helped to create a common forum for not only to create a safe “work-place” but also a safe “living environment”.

HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) Corner

The Annual Cultural Function of Balmer Lawrie Recreation Club was organized on 23rd March, 2014 at

“Uttam Mancha”, Kolkata. The function was inaugurated by Mr. P P Sahoo, Director [HR&CA] & Vice

President of the Club. During the function, members of the club staged a drama, “Subha Prostab” followed

by an entertaining musical performance by the well-known singer, Pratik Chowdhury. The audience

enjoyed both the programs.

Mr. H K Bhoklay, ED[CA], Mr. Dilip Kumar Das, Head - CSR and Ms. Kshama Agarwal visited the Indian

Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP) on 20th March 2014.

The Masjid-i Jahān-Numā, commonly known as the Jama Masjid is the principal mosque of Old Delhi in India.

The foundation of the historic Jama Masjid was laid on a hillock in Shahjahanabad by the fifth Mughal Emperor of

India, Shahjahan, on Friday, October 19, 1650 AD (10th Shawwal 1060 AH). The mosque was the result of the

efforts of over 6,000 workers, over a period of six years (1650–1656 AD). The cost of the construction in those times

was 10 lakh (1 million) Rupees.

It is the largest and best-known mosque in India. It lies at the beginning of the Chawri Bazar Road, a very busy

central street of Old Delhi. The name, Jama Masjid, refers to the weekly Friday noon congregation prayers of Muslims,

Jummah, which are usually done in a mosque, the "congregational mosque" or "jāma masjid". The courtyard of the

mosque can hold up to twenty-five thousand worshippers. The mosque also houses several relics in a closet in the

north gate, including an antique copy of the Quran written on deer skin.
