Structures and Functions

The cardiovascular system is comprised of the heart and circulatory system.

Structures include :the heart, blood vessels, and blood

Heart

The heart is the organ that supplies blood and oxygen to all of the body parts.

The heart also produces (electrical) impulses through cardiac conduction

The beating of the heart starts the cardiac cycle

Blood Vessels

Tubular structures that carry blood through tissues and organs

Blood travels from the heart through arteries to smaller arterioles, then to capillaries to venules to veins then back to the heart

Blood

Deliver nutrients to cells and remove wastes produced during processes like cellular respiration.

Red blood cells contain large amounts of hemoglobin.

After depositing oxygen to tissue and cells, red blood cells pick up carbon dioxide and take it to the lungs.

Vessels that make the pathway for blood

There are… Blood vessels that take the blood away

from the heart are arteries Blood vessels that take blood towards the

heart and veins. Capillaries go between arteries and veins

So the blood moves…

Heart> artery> capillary> venule> vein> heart

This is called circulation, there are two types of circulation in the circulatory system.

Systemic and Pulmonary Circulation

Circulations

Pulmonary

• Blood goes through the lungs where blood is oxygenated

Systemic

• Blood goes to the rest of the body to provide oxygenated blood.

Blood cells

Blood is made up of red cells, white cells, plasma and platelet. Red cells: carry the oxygen to the body

and carbon dioxide away from the body. White cells: Defend the body from

foreign things and germs, viruses, and bacteria.

Plasma: Carries the nutrients and suspends the other 3 components.

Platelets: repair vessel walls.

Blood types

The difference between blood types has to do with the type of antigens on the red blood cells and the kind of antibodies present in the blood.

The type AB has both A and B antigens on the red blood cells and there are no antibodies present.

Type O blood is the opposite of AB blood. Type O has the antibody for both A and B blood but has no antigens on the red blood cells
