2. 7.8 magnitude strikes Tokyo, leaves 12 people hurt A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Japanese coast on Saturday, leaving 12 people injured and shaking buildings in Tokyo and setting off car alarms. According to The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, despite the huge power of the quake, there was no risk of a tsunami .

3. Online taxi hailing service Uber Technologies Inc named a new country head for India on Sunday to lead the San Francisco-based company’s expansion there. Uber appointed Mr. Amit Jain as President, Uber India who was previously president of U.S. home rentals website operator Rent.com. 4. Finance minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget has proposed a rise in service tax from 12.36 per cent to 14 per cent. The proposal to take effect from 01 June, i.e, today. The tax is levied on all services, expect a small negative list.

5. As per a report in a leading Daily, the current heatwave in India is the fifth deadliest in the world. Also, it is the second deadliest in India, the Daily said, quoting an international database of disasters. Before this the worst was in 1998 when 2,541 people had died due to the heatwave. 6. The health ministry is planning on an exit exam for MBBS students passing out of government as well as private colleges. The move is with regard to concerns over the quality of doctors being produced in the country.

02 June 2015 1. 1 year of Telangana as a state As Telangana completes one year of its formation today, the TRS government has planned massive week-long celebrations across the state to mark the occasion. Telangana came into existence on June 2 last year as India’s 29th state after being carved out of Andhra Pradesh.

2. Rear Admiral Philipose G Pynumootil takes over as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Philipose G Pynumootil took over as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Air) on 1st June 2015. The ACNS (Air) is responsible for all the staff functions of the Air Arm of the Navy.

She will also hold charge as Officer on Special Duty in the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry for new and social media. 4. Indian Bank General Manager V A Prasanth has been appointed as the new CFO of the bank with immediate effect. 5. Former Commonwealth Games gold medalist Gurpreet Singh became India’s fifth shooter to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Gurpreet scored 154.8 points to finish fourth in a total field of 138 shooters at the ISSF World Cup in Munich. 6. HSBC Holdings Plc is planning to cut thousands of jobs globally in a bid to reassure shareholders that bosses are focusing on cutting costs.

03 June 2015 1. RBI cuts Repo Rate by 25 bps to 7.25% The Reserve Bank of India cut interest rates by 25 basis points a third time this year. The reduction in the repo rate will lower cost of funds for banks and is a signal to them to reduce lending rates.

2. Meena Hemchandra appointed as executive director of RBI The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Meena Hemchandra as the executive director who would be in charge of department of banking supervision. She will also be in charge of department of non-banking supervision and department of co-operative banking supervision.

Former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is set to be honoured by Bangladesh for his outstanding support which led to the country’s independence during the 1971 Liberation War, when he was a Lok Sabha member. 4. State Bank of India, the country’s largest bank, took the lead in lowering its base rate by 15 basis points (bps) to 9.70 per cent soon after Reserve Bank of India lowered its interest rates. 5. Former Foreign Minister of Singapore George Yeo will be the new Chancellor of the Nalanda University, the External Affairs Ministry announced. 60-year-old Yeo, who was conferred Padma Bhushan in 2012, is currently serving as a member of the governing board of the prestigious university at Rajgir area of Bihar.

04 June 2015 1. USA Freedom Act Passes The Senate passed the USA Freedom Act by 67-32, marking the first time in over thirty years that both houses of Congress have approved a bill placing real restrictions and oversight on the National Security Agency’s surveillance powers.

2. Jaipur Metro starts functioning Jaipur Metro, touted as one of the fastest built metro systems in the country, started operating. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje flagged off the inaugural train on 9.6 km long route from Mansarovar to Chandpole.

3. Irwin Rose, a biochemist who shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering a way that cells destroy unwanted proteins the basis for developing

05 June 2015 1. India and Belarus agree on road map for stronger ties India and Belarus decided to work together on defence and security issues as President Pranab Mukherjee met his Belarusian counterpart and agreed on a 17-point road map aimed at strengthening mutual trust and confidence. Under the agreement, the two countries will enhance coordination in science and technology, energy sector, metals and mining, potash fertilizers, give boost to raw material in textile sector, extend cooperation by Belarus in modernization of public electric transport system in India, agriculture and agro procession.

The Centre has signed a deal with the World Bank for a $400 million loan for an urban development project in Tamil Nadu. The loan pact was signed by Raj Kumar, joint secretary, department of economic affairs, ministry of finance and Onno Ruhl, country director, World Bank (lndia). The size of the project is $600 million, of which $400 million would be financed through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

3. India has jumped six places to the 141st position in the latest rankings released by world football’s governing body FIFA on Thursday. India were previously in the 147th spot. 4. AB de Villiers won five awards, including the South African Cricketer of the Year for a second consecutive time at a gala function, hosted by Cricket South Africa (CSA) in Johannesburg. 5. The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) said on Thursday that it plans to club the three science subjects — physics, chemistry and biology — into one science paper of 100 marks. Similarly, history, civics and geography may also be clubbed into a 100-mark paper.

06 June 2015 1. Infosys appoints R. Seshasayee as non-executive chairman Infosys on Friday named R Seshasayee, vice chairman at truck and bus maker Ashok Leyland, as its non-executive chairman, replacing KV Kamath, who stepped down to take over as president of the newly created BRICS bank.

2. PSU banks introduce paternity leave A recent wage settlement signed between the Indian Banks’ Association and bank unions provides paternity leave entitlement to male executives. “All subordinate employees, clerical employees, officers will be eligible for 15 days of leave before the due date of the spouse or up to six months post delivery,” general secretary of the All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) C H Venkatachalam said.

E-commerce firm Snapdeal and Tata Housing, which have partnered to sell homes online, have announced their largest transaction worth Rs. 1.1 crore hours after commencing the sale of premium and luxury apartments. 4. Essel Group formed a 50:50 joint venture (JV) with the Rajasthan government to set up solar parks in the state. The solar parks will be set up in Bikaner and Jaisalmer regions with an investment of Rs 4,000 crore. 5.Bharti Enterprises managing director Manoj Kohli is leaving the Sunil Mittal-led group after over a decade. . Kohli, who earlier headed Bharti Airtel in India and Africa, is likely to quit by the end of this month.

08 June 2015 1. Historic land swap between India and Bangladesh Bangladesh and India have signed a historic agreement to simplify their border by exchanging more than 150 enclaves of land. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi ratified the deal with his counterpart Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka. Thousands of Bangladeshis inhabit more than 50 enclaves in India, while Indians live in around 100 areas within Bangladesh. The countries will now swap territories and residents can choose where to live.

2. Rahul Dravid named India A, U-19 coach Former captain Rahul Dravid was appointed coach of the India A and under-19 cricket teams after the first meeting of BCCI’s high-profile advisory committee. The newly-constituted committee — comprising retired greats Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman — met for the first time to discuss the future of Indian cricket and also present was BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya.

IIT-Madras on Sunday revoked the ban on the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle (APSC) following talks between IIT-M director Bhaskar Ramamurthi and members of the APSC according to a joint statement released by the institute and the student group.

K V Chowdhary appointed new CVC; Vijai Sharma named new chief information commissioner K V Chowdary, former chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has been appointed the new central vigilance commissioner. Vijai Sharma has been named the new chief information commissioner.

2. YES Bank appoints Rana Kapoor as MD Yes Bank’s shareholders have approved 12 resolutions which included the re-appointment of Rana Kapoor as MD & CEO of the bank with a majority vote of 99.97%. In the bank’s annual general meeting on Saturday, the shareholders also approved through a special resolution the issuance of non-convertible debentures and bonds up to R10,000 crore and also increased the borrowing limit of the bank to R50,000 crore from R30,000 crore currently.

3. Federal Bank today cut the base rate, or the minimum lending rate, by 0.25 per cent to 9.95 per cent. The new rates will be effective from June 18, 2015. 4. Deutsche Bank appointed John Cryan as its new CEO after co-chief executives Anshu Jain and Juergen Fitschen resigned following criticism from investors.

Apple on Tuesday announced several new software features as part of its annual update of mobile operating system that powers the company’s iconic iPhones and iPads. iOS 9, the next version of the software that powers Apple’s mobile devices, will support iPhone 4S and above, iPad 2 and above, all iPad mini models, and iPod touch fifth-generation.

NCR to now include 3 more districts The sprawl of the National Capital Region (NCR) just got bigger as the nod has been given for the inclusion of Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh and the Jind and Karnal districts of Haryana as part of the conurbation. With this, the total number of districts outside Delhi that form the NCR goes up to 23 from the three neighbouring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Punjab CM gets Sant Ramdev Award Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal was recently honoured with the Sant Namdev National Award for promoting peace, communal harmony and universal brotherhood. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Badal said that the Punjab government is looking forward to extend its ties in agriculture, education and cultural sectors with Maharashtra.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo to step down Twitter Inc CEO Dick Costolo is stepping down, under pressure from investors frustrated by the Internet company’s slow growth and seemingly constant shake-ups in its upper ranks. Costolo will be replaced by co-founder Jack Dorsey on an interim basis.

2. Rock garden creator Nek Chand passes away Rock Garden creator and Padma awardee Nek Chand Saini, 90, breathed his last on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday at PGI. He died of cardiac arrest at 12.10 am.

Import duty scrapped on AIDS drugs Union Government has scrapped customs import duties for drugs and test kits used to treat Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), in an effort to cut prices across the country, as it struggles to cope with an ongoing shortage in its national program to fight the disease.

2. Mexico’s supreme court ruled barring same – sex marriage as unconstitutional Mexico’s supreme court has ruled it is unconstitutional for Mexican states to bar same-sex marriages. But the court’s ruling is considered a “jurisprudential thesis” and does not invalidate any state laws, meaning gay couples denied the right to wed would have to turn to the courts individually. 15 June 2015 1.Sanghmitra Bandyopadhayay replaces Dr. Bimal Roy as director of Indian Statistical Institute Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) has sacked Dr Bimal K Roy as the Director of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). He was removed from the office on charges of indiscipline one-and-a-half months before the end of his term. Professor Sanghmitra Bandyopadhayay will now replace Dr Bimal K Roy as the Director of ISI. With this appointment she has become the first woman to lead the institute.

2. Vinita Bali appointed as Chairman of GAIN Vinita Bali has been appointed Chair of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition’s (GAIN) Board of Directors. Vinita takes over from Jay Naidoo, who has led GAIN in the global fight against malnutrition since its creation in 2002, a press statement said.

3. The Union Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and the government of Tamil Nadu have set up a Migrant ResourceCentre (MRC) in Chennai, which started functioning on 12th June 2015. 4. World Day Against Child Labour observed all over the World on 12th June 2015 under the theme of ‘NO to Child Labour – Yes to Quality Education’. This day calls for focus on education for the exploited and vulnerable children and on policies related to the same.

2. Sheila Kaul died Former Union Minister Sheila Kaul, a sister-in-law of Jawaharlal Nehru and oldest surviving former parliamentarian, died after a brief illness in a hospital here. She was 100.A former Himachal Pradesh Governor, Kaul had been unwell for the past few days and was admitted to the hospital last evening where she breathed her last at 8 p.m.

17 June 2015 1. BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement signed Transport ministers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and India have signed a Motor Vehicles Agreement to facilitate transportation of people and goods among the four SAARC member nations.

Narendra Kumar Yadav appointed as CMD of MTNL Narendra Kumar Yadav took charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the state-run telecom operator Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). This was informed by MTNL on 16 June 2015 in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Yadav succeeded PK Purwar, who was given additional charge of the post after company’s CMD AK Garg retired on 30 May 2014.

2. Nathula Pass opens after 50 years Sikkim Governor Shrinivas Patil and Chief Minister Pawan Chamling flagged off the journey on Thursday. The alternative route to Kailash Mansarovar, a Hindu pilgrimage site in the Himalayas, has been opened half a century after China had closed the Nathu La Pass on the Sikkim-Tibet border. Forty pilgrims, including two women and five support staff, are undertaking the journey.

25 June 2015 1. India emerges as third largest FDI source for United Kingdom India has emerged as the third largest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) source for United Kingdom (UK) in 2014-15.
