01 Abstract

For thousands of years, gold has been the primary store of value for individuals and nations. Gold has mineral properties, that is, immutability. Thus, it has been used as a tool to accumulate wealth efficiently unlike assets that belong to specific countries or have a limited value only in a specific location such as currency, coins, etc. It is already known to everyone that fiat currency, which is indispensable for capitalism, also started from gold. Even if fiat currency was overused due to excessive human desire, the chaos could be quickly put to rest because of the standard real currency, gold, which allowed capitalism to develop to its present form.

Gold has various properties in addition to its monetary value. Among these, the most powerful attribute is ‘strength’. The historical shift in hegemony proves it. When Britain‘s gold holdings bottomed out due to World Wars I and II, the financial market shifted from Britain to the United States. At this time, the United States increased the number of dollar holdings by exchanging dollars for gold through the Bretton Woods system and dollars was established as an international currency. As a result, it was able to solidify its power by receiving seignorage (the profit after subtracting the manufacturing and distribution costs of money from the face value of money) from all countries that traded the US dollar as a key currency.

However, compared to its long history, the development of the gold trading industry and

01 Abstract

gold trading system has been slow. In gold trading, the stored quantity and ownership are still checked by an analog method, and ethical standards are unclear in the industry. In addition, the slow pace of development compared to other investment methods is also one of the factors hindering industrial development because the market is structured with a focus on simple ‘transactions’ in that gold holders may sell their gold, or cash holders may purchase.

Gold Sky Castle (hereinafter referred to as GSC) solves the above problems through an on/offline trading platform that utilizes real currency gold and blockchain technology. With high ethical standards, modern communication, high-level blockchain technology that is immutable, secure, and is created and managed in a way of decentralization, and a large network of stores that follow standardized operating principles and ethical standards, it will become an online and offline platform providing benefits to buyers, sellers, goldsmiths, investors and traders.

GSC also helps gold holders use their gold as a form of money. It provides a methodology to access gold in actual through investment without the burden of storing and securing gold itself, while providing a utility that can be used as an unchanging form of payment anywhere in the world, including in the digital realm.

GSC Coin, a virtual currency developed by GSC, is a tokenized expression of ownership of gold certificates, and serves as a value proving that the rights of owners can be guaranteed by the distributed ledger represented by blockchain technology.

GSC aims to overcome the transitional limitations of the gold trading ecosystem by bringing experts together from various fields such as the traditional gold trading market, precious metals industry, digital finance, law, and blockchain technology. In addition, GSC aims to become a starting point for creating synergy between blockchain-based currency which is the virtual currency and the real asset, gold. Through this, various stakeholders in the gold trading market and precious metals market will be able to pursue their respective benefits to the maximum in the GSC key trading ecosystem. Through the fusion of gold, a powerful real asset, and various technologies that increase the utilization of investment assets through it, the professional investment system will be universalized to achieve symbiotic development with all platform participants.

1. Why Gold?

No other asset is more closely related to the holding, exchange and preservation of value than gold. For thousands of years, people have relied on gold as a stable store of wealth and a symbol of power. Real gold is an ideal means of mitigating losses during economic downturns and crises because it does not entail counterparty risks (risks caused by the counterparty’s repayment and default of settlement obligations) caused by the transaction party.

Gold is one of the most effective assets to diversify risks, especially as it can serve as a hedge against the rising valuations and downside risks of inflation in various global asset markets. Since investors depend on real gold during times of market uncertainty, the more risky assets there are in the market, the higher the demand for gold. For this reason, gold has not only provided stability and diversification within portfolios, but has also provided profits than major asset classes in long-term investment strategies that is proved in history.

The role of gold in the electronics industry also ensures rapid growth in the demand for gold as a whole. As an industrial metal, gold is in an indispensable position based on its unique properties. Gold is essential in high-tech fields such as electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, IoT, clean energy, and semiconductors, and this demand will continue to rise until alternative means of transportation or energy that exceed existing levels are developed. To meet increased demand, the output of global mining has risen to an all-time high in the past 30 years. However, as exploration and production costs soar and the pace at which new gold reserves are discovered decreases, supply through the global mining industry will decrease in the long run, which will increase the scarcity of gold and contribute to rising prices.

This is why the GSC project focuses on real gold. Gold is not directly controlled by the central bank or government and is not affected by inflation and monetary policy. This is because the central bank can print money but cannot print gold. Thus, it is almost independent from a particular currency. This aligns with the ideology of decentralization and decentralization of power advocated by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, providing us with a new paradigm. For this reason, the GSC project took “gold”, an asset with such stability and risk mitigation functions, as its business model. GSC is attempting digitization/tokenization by filling in the void by utilizing the characteristics of gold in the rapidly buying/selling and volatile digital asset market. GSC take it as a basic value to distribute the benefits derived from this equitably with stakeholders.

2. The first real gold trading platform in the blockchain industry - Gold Sky Castle

GSC aims to become the first real gold trading platform in blockchain industry. While other existing projects have moved with only virtual assets issued without real objects, GSC conducts business based on real-life exchanges in which real gold and real-life funds owned by the foundation are traded. In other words, the GSC Coin held by the user is entitled to be exchanged for real gold at GSC Exchange or gold vending machines under Smart Contract. At this time, the means to connect GSC Coin and real gold at a certain ratio is the blockchain technology. With the use of Smart Contract among blockchain technologies, users can digitally perform guarantees and qualifications for real gold. You can use the GSC platform in the form of finding, depositing, or reinvesting real gold that has been granted rights through the GSC platform’s Smart Contract. By the blockchain system “CASTLED” developed by the foundation, the validity and scope of the contract are determined and real gold are guaranteed. Initially, this contract will be recorded on the Ethereum blockchain explorer through ERC-20, but in the stage of business expansion, it is set as the second step of development to enhance stability and maintain fast processing speed by self-technicalizing it.

GSC Coin issued by the foundation can also be used to purchase products/services from

various stakeholders and business partners linked to the platform. The scope of benefits of this payment method increases as the GSC platform takes over by implementing the GSC Coin fund trading ecosystem. Economies of scale work here as well. The more stakeholders participated, the more users of the platform, the higher the scope and discount rate of benefits, and the lower the fees, management costs, and risk-taking costs. Increasingly, this will lead to the franchising of offline gold exchanges, and the way goods and services, including real gold, are paid in GSC Coin will become commonplace. This method uses its own payment service called GSC Pay, and the payment system is being developed at the same time as the foundation was launched with GSC Blockchain Wallet.

The GSC Ecosystem, created by the collaboration of strong real asset gold, security-resistant self-blockchain technology, and the foundation‘s expertise, is characterized by free deposit and withdrawal of values that are not restricted by the state, risks controlled through smart contracts. Together with the synergy brought about by the coexistence of capital and technological capabilities, it will establish itself as a strong business model by adding seignorage generated through issuance of GSC Coin.

3. Core Technology - Self-blockchain Technology “CASTLED”

Transparent transactions are essential to provide benefits to both sellers, buyers, and recommenders. Transactions through Smart Contract, the core of blockchain technology, leave all records transparently, so it is essential for implementing such a system. All transactions that need to guarantee ownership or move real gold assets within the GSC platform are created, recorded, and preserved by Smart Contracts on the technological platform.

(1) Implement a reliable and transparent gold transaction ecosystem with Smart Contract

Digital assets used for physical transactions and Smart Contracts used for transferring ownership are all constructed differently and with different computing languages. It is physically impossible to link them directly one by one, and it takes astronomical time, even if it is possible theoretically. GSC utilizes its own technology to enable a platform for integrating value assets technically. Blockchain technology is essential for companies with gold assets and gold certificates to convert their assets into the GSC platform. GSC seeks technological integration by preventing misuse in the conversion process of assets and addressing double payments and completeness issues, thereby introducing new technology standards to the industry.

(3) Implementation of ownership guarantees and gold trading systems through proprietary technology

Gold is a very expensive product, and the purity and source of gold are still protected by various certificates. Therefore, digitizing this requires enormous security skills and financial knowledge. The GSC platform is designed on the basis of building a security system that is the same as or meets the required standards as financial institutions in accordance with enhanced DID financial security standards. Many of the institutions that purchase gold as investments are banks, insurance companies, and other financial institutions, which spend huge amounts on security every year, so it is also essential for the GSC platform to meet industry requirements by utilizing blockchain technology to attract them to players. Therefore, the system design of the GSC platform was based on its own blockchain technology designed beyond the financial security standard.

(2) Meeting the needs of financial institutions for data protection and security

The updateability of the “CASTLED” Smart Contract provided by GSC is achieved by interoperating systems built by grouping individual contracts. ZeppelinOS proxy pattern9 allows users to update/upgrade GSC platform solutions and business logic over time while providing an immutable Smart Contract address to communicate within the platform. By default, Smart Contract includes five types: GSC Proxy, GSC Implementation, Blacklisted External Managed Storage Contract, and Whitelisted External Managed Storage Contract.

1. Service Architecture

Gold, a physical metal, has a disadvantage that the more units are split and traded, the lower the value of certification. If it is digitally traded, it enables minority transactions smaller than an ounce, such as blockchain exchanges. GSC leverages these benefits to help reduce overhead during gold transactions and efficiently retain and manage small units of gold trading and investment by users. Transactions are made immediately and ownership transfer is based on the speed of Smart Contract through asset transfer, which allows the transaction party risk to be overcome. The digitalization mechanism also enables full support with real gold at any time and enables various financial services.

Taking advantage of these advantages, GSC provides a variety of services through the GSC Platform that support gold deposits and digitized gold transactions. Various tokenized and digitized payment solutions and services are cost-effective, value-efficient, and can integrate with existing banking platforms and state-of-the-art IT industries to generate synergy. Digitalization, asset trading, financial services, and settlement solutions are driven in the way expressed in the service architecture, which brings symbiotic development of the GSC fund trading ecosystem.

2. Key feature of GSC

Stakeholders who participated in the GSC platform can enjoy a variety of GSC-linked products and services, including real gold, based on GSC Coin, which utilizes certificates verified through Smart Contract.

Existing gold transactions were based on mutual trust between the parties to the contract. Therefore, it often caused various negative issues. However, through the trading solutions provided by the GSC platform, a safe trading environment that is not based on trust is guaranteed for users.

The GSC provides 100% real gold support through certificate in the GSC Foundation’s inventory, so it has the possibility of continuous expansion.

The amount of gold pegged by GSC Coin can be checked at any time. In addition, the Wallet balance and transaction details of each account are transparently recorded through Smart Contract.

GSC provides the first real gold exchange solution in Korea. This includes offline gold exchange franchises and gold vending machines. This allows platform participants to reduce constraints depending on location or situation and focus on the nature of transactions.

GSC‘s overwhelming blockchain technology can also be found through the Cryptocurrencies Wallet. “GSC Wallet” provides real gold trading, QR certification and financial services based on GSC Coin being held as well as deposit, withdrawal and transfer of GSC Coin. GSC Wallet is designed so that even users who have no knowledge of technology can use it at the level of using general mobile payments according to the analysis data for customer experience accumulated by the UI / UX expert group for many years, and the necessary functions are selected according to the characteristics of various stakeholders. Thus, an algorithm to determine the priority of exposure is applied.

One feature that is distinctly different from other blockchain wallet apps is the support of “GSC Pay”. Beyond Wallet 1.0, which was only used for deposit and withdrawal functions of cryptocurrency, and Wallet 2.0 including staking and investment functions, it provides stakeholders with Wallet 3.0 which supports real-time payment of various products and services including real gold, and user authentication when using a vending machine.

Initially, when the virtual currency erc-20 is transmitted through the Ethereum wallet, the GSC Wallet receives the authentication information of the Custody System linked to the real gold inventory from the Ops (Open profiling system; standard for personal information exchange) inside the GSC Wallet System. With the authentication, it allows access to the information of holding gold of GSC Wallet.

Expectation05

Various stakeholders such as companies, investors and consumers participating in GSC’s business ecosystem can expect the following benefits. In addition, when the GSC-based ecosystem is established and exerts a good influence in all fields of the gold trading industry, we can expect the following effects.

1. Secure storage of value

Historically, gold has been established as the most effective store of value as a hedge against various risks such as volatility and inflation of fiat currencies and as a value-stable asset. GSC brings gold guaranteed by institution into the blockchain technology and virtual currency ecosystem, helping digital asset investors leverage the benefits of gold investment which is proven historically.

05 Expectation

Stakeholders participating in the GSC platform can enjoy various GSC-linked products/services including real gold based on GSC Coin that utilizes certificates verified through Smart Contract.

While other gold-related products, such as ETFs and KRX, set fees for storage and management of gold, GSC provides benefits to traders by dividing them by grade and minimizing them.

2. Aspects of Gold Trading Institution

3. Aspects of Cross Trader

4. Effective diversification of portfolio

GSC differs from other popular gold products in two ways, which can provide strong trading incentives for institutions that trade gold.

Most investors do not trade only one type of asset. GSC offers these cross-asset traders the following benefits:

The portfolio of the virtual currency market and digital asset market is very sensitive to volatility and market correlation, so the approach must be different from the existing financial market. We solved this problem by configuring the price of GSC Coin to fluctuate with spot gold. The price fluctuates with gold, a value-stabilizing asset, allowing stakeholders to trade GSC in a way that accesses traditional financial markets.

Make GSC a good product to trade from both statistical and pure arbitrage perspective. Through the know-how of product composition by the financial expert / quant group within the foundation, it can provide benefits to traders by connecting the traditional financial market and digital asset market and allowing liquidity at the institutional level.

Configure a platform to enable indirect transactions based on GSC Coin for traditional gold products such as KRX, GLD, XAU, COMEX / CME
