No Time for Resting On Laurels
It is an indisputable fact that the Chinese economy has made extraor-dinary achievements in an extremely extraordinary year.
According to the official data on the economic performance in 2020 released by the National Bureau of Statistics on January 18, the overall growth for the year was 2.3 percent, making China the only major economy to notch up growth in a year of global pandemic, while the GDP crossed 100 trillion yuan ($15.41 trillion) for the ÀUVWWLPH
The economy grew 3.2 percent year on year in the second quarter, an unimaginable leap from the 6.8-per-cent contraction in the first quarter due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
These achievements come against a backdrop of global recession and a turbulent external environment. The global economy was hit by uni-lateralism, trade protectionism and a pandemic as well as the trade war started by the United States. Despite the complex situation, the Chinese economy’s fast recovery and better-
than-expected growth demonstrate the institutional strength of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
The Chinese economy now ac-counts for a larger share of the global economy, and will help boost the re-covery of others.
However, now is not the time for complacency. Though the larg-est developing country in the world, China is still below the world average in terms of per-capita GDP and its economic development still remains unbalanced and inadequate, with the gap in development between urban and rural areas still large, and the do-mestic innovation capacity still unable to meet the demand of high-quality development.
In addition, despite a vaccination drive, COVID-19 has still not been eradicated. Geopolitical tensions re-main and there are still uncertainties about future foreign relationships.
To achieve the long-term goal of economic and social development at home and lend a hand to the partners struggling abroad, the hard work has to continue—for a long time to come. BR

Marine MicroplasticsPeople’s DailyJanuary 18China’s 37th Antarctic expedition has been underway for over two months. Monitoring new pollutants such as micro-plastics is part of its mission.
Microplastics have been detected during many scientific expeditions in recent years. Compared with regular plastics, the pollutant with a diameter of OHVVWKDQPPLVGLIÀFXOWWRGHWHFWDQGhas potential hazards. It can come from the packaging of personal care products, FOHDQLQJDJHQWVDQGRWKHUWKLQJVÁRZLQJ
into the sea.In 2015, the Joint Group of Experts
on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environment Protection, a UN advisory body, evaluated microplastics’ impact. Due to its small size, it can be ingested by marine animals and the toxic ingredients can be fatal.
China, a major manufacturer of plastic products, is trying to reduce marine waste at its source. Public awareness of the harmful impact of plastics has increased and today, in the coastal areas, more and more volunteers are participating in cleaning-up activities under the local au-thorities’ guidance.

¾ CHINESE DEBUTANT WINS SNOOKER MASTERS
Chinese debutant Yan Bingtao clinched the Snooker Masters title on January 17, becoming the youngest Masters champion since Ronnie O’Sullivan won the event in 1995 at the age of 19.
The 20-year-old became the second Asian winner of the prestigious tourna-ment, showing maturity beyond his years to defeat four-time world champion John +LJJLQVLQDQHQWKUDOOLQJÀQDOLQ0LOWRQ.H\QHVWKH8QLWHG.LQJGRP
“I thought I might win, and I even thought how I would cel-ebrate. But when the victory came, I was calm,” Yan said.
The win earned him 250,000 pounds ($340,000), and in many observers’ estimations, has transformed the Chinese No.2 into a contender for the world championship in April.
Yan joined the pro tour in 2016 and has been steadily im-proving with a championship last season.

AI EducationChina Education DailyJanuary 18Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is a popular subject among teenagers around the world. AI education focuses on data, algorithms and computing, teaching stu-dents to write programs.
Algorithm and programming are essential parts of AI but are generally taught in universities. Students need to have a good foundation in maths and computer science.
However, AI education for teen-agers should be designed according to the extent of their knowledge and learning capacity rather than the con-tent in university classes.
A scientific understanding of AI should be listed in education and values. Teenagers are in a critical period of life when their worldview takes shape. As AI education is popularized, they need guidance from schools, parents and society so that they have the ethics to apply AI in the future without harming others.
The recent years have seen rapid changes in young people’s lifestyle. Today, various platforms, such as train-ing, e-commerce and medical cosmetic procedures, provide loans targeted at different groups like university stu-dents, people starting their careers, and employees wanting to rent apartments. Almost every scenario has spawned a corresponding pattern for people to bor-row to spend.
“Some consumer credit products are inducing the young generation to bor-row money and spend in advance. This is not only an economic and financial phenomenon but also a cultural and de-mographic one with profound impact,” Zhou Xiaochuan, former Governor of the central bank, said.
Chen Zhiwu, head of the Asia Global Institute at the University of Hong Kong, thinks borrowing to spend FDQKHOS\RXQJSHRSOHGHYHORSÀQDQFLDOplanning. “In developed countries such DVWKH86DÀQDQFLQJFXOWXUHKDVEHHQformed among young people under the pressure of paying mortgages,” he said, adding that borrowing money can force them to work harder to earn a higher salary.
