If you haven’t done so already, see “Preliminary Cutting Instructions” on page 3
of the Introduction for best use of your fabric.
Block 1
You will need:
White
• (1) 9” x 17” rectangle for appliqued or embroidered center (omit if
not doing applique or embroidery)
Pink #2
• (6) 3 1/8” squares
Yellow #2
• (6) 2 1/2” squares
• (6) 3 1/8” squares
Black
• (6) 2 1/2” squares
Optional
• (1) 6 1/2” x 14 1/2” of novelty, floral, etc. for center of block if NOT doing applique or
embroidery
• Black embroidery floss to add bee details (antennae and flight trail)
Making the block:
Embroider or applique the 9” x 17” White rectangle (patterns attached.)
Trim the White background rectangle to 6 1/2” x 14 1/2”.
Make the HSTs (Half Square Triangle units): Get your 3 1/8” Pink and Yellow squares. Place a Yellow
square RIGHT sides together with a Pink square.
Use a ruler and a pencil to draw a line diagonally from corner to corner, on the WRONG side of the fabric
of each “square pair”. Then draw a line 1/4” on either side of this line. I like to use a see-through ruler
for this step. (You can also just draw the line down the center, and use your 1/4” foot to sew 1/4” away
from that center line… but I like the accuracy I get by drawing in all of the lines.)**

Pin the pairs together, and sew on
those “side” lines (not the center
line), then cut on the center line:
Press the seam allowances toward the Pink. Now, you have 12 squares (HST’s):
Trim the squares to 2 1/2”.

Sew the Black squares and HST’s together as shown; press seam allowances toward Black:

Sew long units to sides of center rectangle; press seam allowances toward HST units:
Sew remaining units to top and bottom of block; press seam allowances toward HST units.
Your block should measure 10 1/2” x 18 1/2”.
Congratulations! Block #1 is done!
