Wooden and metal water cisterns at the top of skyscrapers have become a cool icon on souvenirs and T-shirts in New York. Not many New Yorkers are aware that the water they drink and shower in is stored in attic cisterns. Building regulations demand that high-rise buildings taller than six floors have their own pumping system and water cistern to ensure sufficient water pressure for daily use and fire safety when required.

The phenomenon is as old as the skyscrapers themselves (roughly 150 years), and despite the technology having been modernised through built-in steel and concrete cisterns, it is still based on the laws of gravity creating water pressure. Ordinary water pipes slowly fill the cis-terns, which then feed pressurised water to the taps in the apartments dozens of storeys up in the air.

The majority of freestanding wooden cisterns are more than 40 years old, but two manufacturers still keep the craft alive. Their new constructions, however, look old and worn almost immediately because they have to leave the timber untreated so as not to give the water a bad taste. A wooden construction still has its advan-

tages. It is relatively cheap, the average wooden water cistern carrying 38 cubic metres costs around $ 38,000 while a steel one could cost four times as much. Some choose wood because it is easier to get the material to the top of a skyscraper and construct it on site than to lift up a whole fibreglass, steel, plastic or concrete cistern. Another advantage with wooden cisterns is their natural insulation properties.

A wooden cistern can be built and installed in 24 hours. A team of six either disassem-bles the existing construction or builds a new one from scratch. It then takes two to three hours to fill up the first time. The cistern leaks before the wood begins to swell. A wooden cistern has an estimated life span of 30 years. Today they look rather odd in a modern urban setting, which is probably why they have become a cultish icon for New York. Perhaps it is also in the rescuing of a craft tradition in the ever- increasing competition from other materi-als and technologies.

• Many high-rises in New York exceed the height required to supply water with sufficient pressure.

• The roof water cisterns use gravitatio nal pull to provide high buildings with water pressure.

• They are used for the daily domestic consumption and for the building’s fire safety system.

• Most buildings have water cisterns that hold roughly one day’s supply.

• The water level in the cistern is regulated by a ball-cock valve that lets water in at the same amount as it is being used.

• Canadian cedar is the most common wood used in making wooden cisterns.
