PREPARATION:We start by basecoating the entire pumpkin in Burnt Orange. This will serve as our undercoat. Let dry. Prepare your palette with the following three colors; Marigold, Canyon Orange and Burnt Orange. Mist your pumpkin surface with a light misting of water. With your Wash Brush, paint these colors in long sweeping motions up and down as you go across the pumpkin. Some of these colors will blend and some will streak a bit as well, but this is the eff ect we want! You don’t want you paint to ‘drag’, so if your paint be-gins to drag, mist the surface with water to keep the paint fl owing smoothly! Once you have achieved the color blend that you like. Let it dry completely.

For additional interest, I decided to stamp the back-ground using Light Cinnamon. Apply the Light Cin-namon to your Leaves Stamp with either a large fl at sponge (by pouncing the color on) or with a brayer. Stamp in sections on the pumpkin until you have cov-ered the entire pumpkin. (Remember to reapply paint to your stamp as needed). Let this dry completely before transferring your main design.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS:Now that our design has been transferred, the fi rst step is to shade randomly around parts of the design. I didn’t completely shade around the entire design, just in places to help it stand out, such as; around the edges of the squirrel on the left, around each side of the hat brim, under or beside the oak and maple leaves and under the curls of the squirrels tails. You can shade as much or as little as you wish. Use Tradi-tional Burnt Umber when shading.

HAT – Basecoat the hat with two coats of Dark Chocolate. Remember to let the fi rst coat of this dry, before applying the second. Once dry, drybrush with Espresso. Then drybrush again with Sable, concen-trating more on the right side of that hat as a high-light.

Basecoat the buckle solidly with Antique Gold. Once dry, drybrush with Marigold. Highlight on the right side of the buckle with Banana Cream.

Basecoat the Hatband solidly with Soft Black. Once dry, drybrush with Dark Chocolate.

Once this has dried, you can trace on the hatband’s buckle holes. The holes are painted solidly with Worn Penny. Add an additional coat of this if needed. The center of the holes are painted Black.

If you need to retrace the areas of the squirrels that are against the hat, you can do that now. You can also trace on the word “Blessed” and the acorns as well.

Using Soft Black, shade around the top and bottom of the hatband/buckle, around the edges of the squirrels that are against the hat and under the acorns. Let dry.

Paint the lettering for the word in Black. Finely outline the entire hat with Black (use your pen, if you like).

SQUIRRELS – Basecoat both squirrels solidly in Burnt Sienna; you will likely need two coats for the best cov-erage. Once dry, drybrush them with Honey Brown. If this appears to look too light, add a bit of Burnt Sienna back into your brush and lightly drybrush again to help tone it down.

Once this has dried, trace on the squirrel’s details. Us-ing an equal mix of Honey Brown and Warm White, drybrush to highlight around the eyes, muzzles, ears, tops of paws and the undersides of their tails.

Now to help defi ne their body parts, shade with an equal mix of Light Cinnamon and Traditional Burnt Um-ber, (around their heads, tails).

Basecoat their eyes and the insides of their ears with Honey Brown. The pupils of their eyes are done in Black and I added a thin accent line and tiny dot of Warm White to each. Finely outline the squirrels in Black.

ACORNS – Basecoat the bottoms of the acorns with two coats of Milk Chocolate. Once dry, drybrush the upper sides of these areas with Cocoa.

Basecoat the tops of the acorns with two coats of Cocoa. Once dry, drybrush the upper side of each top with Honey Brown.

The stems of the acorns are solid Milk Chocolate. Finely outline all in Black, including the ‘crisscross’ details on the tops of the acorns.

OAK LEAF – Basecoat the entire leaf with two coats of Antique Gold. Once dry, drybrush with Marigold. Drybrush to highlight the upper half of the leaf with Banana Cream. Once dry, shade along the bottom half of the leaf with Canyon Orange. The stem of the leaf is painted with Milk Chocolate.

Once all has dried, fi nely outline in Black, including the leaf’s details.

MAPLE LEAVES – Basecoat both of these leaves solidly with Heritage Brick (you will need two coats). Once

dry, drybrush over the leaves with Burnt Orange. Shade across the upper edges with Antique Gold. Shade along the bottom edges with Rookwood Red. The stems are painted with Dark Chocolate.

Once dry, fi nely outline them both in Black, including their vein details.

FINISHING:Once we have completed our pumpkin, it will be ready to seal! I simply spray sealed mine with Americana’s Matte Spray Finisher. Once it has dried, you can add wire, ribbon, etc… if you choose to create a hanger. I also added DecoArt DuraClear Gloss Varnish to the squirrels’ eyes, along with the holes on the buckle and the bottoms of the acorns. This is an optional step so you can decide if you’d like a little extra shine!

Autumn is my very favorite season and I feel very ‘Blessed’ to be able to design something for you! Enjoy!
