How it worksTurbine flow meters contain a free spinning turbine rotor, mounted in-line with the fluid stream, that spins at a rate proportional to the volumetric flow. A magnetic-style pickup converts the rotational energy of a turbine into electrical energy.
Frequency Vs Flow
1
As the turbine passes under the magnetic pickup it generates a sine wave whose frequency is proportional to the volume of fluid passing through the turbine.

Frequency Vs FlowAs the fluid flow increase so does the output frequency of the magnetic pickup. Using an electronic circuit the output frequency can be converted to a number of useful forms. One of these forms is a digital display.
Electronic Converter
Frequency Vs Flow
Another useful conversion is to change from frequency to a direct current ( DC ) output such as a 4 to 20 mA output

K-FactorOnce we know the meter’s output frequency, we correlate this to a master meter’s instantaneous flow rate. Then use the following equation.
K-Factor = (Frequency(Hz) x 60)/GPM
The k-factor represents the number of pulses the meter produces for each gallon of water displaced.
Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid which is being deformed by either sheer stress or extensional stress. In general terms, it is the resistance of a liquid to flow, or its “thickness”. Viscosity describes a fluid’s internal resistance to flow and may be thought of as a measure of fluid friction. Thus, water is “thin”, having a lower viscosity, while vegetable oil is “thick” having a higher viscosity.
Viscosity Effects
Blancett turbines are designed/refined for viscosities that resemble water – 1cSt or 1cp (assuming specific gravity = 1).
As little as 4cSt can change the meter’s accuracy by 1-2% and reduce its turndown ratio. Characteristics of the meter will determine its viscosity effects – example: smaller turbines will be more effected (accuracy and turndown) than larger meters.
Rule of thumb:If the liquid flows like water and has no chemical incompatibilities with the materials of construction then the application is suitable. For all others, please contact your technical sales representative.
