Counselor’s Responsibilities

■ Safety Camp goes RAIN OR SHINE!■ Do NOT wear anything associated with your uniform

or tell the children what your occupation is! Please do not drive a city vehicle. This is part of the fun!

■ No additional children please – only registered participants.

■ No alcohol, tobacco/drugs, or foul language.■ Cell phone usage should be kept to an absolute

minimum – emergency only, please!■ Assigned to same group for both days – do

EVERYTHING with them. Snacks, lunch, etc. ■ Stay on schedule.■ Stay in assigned area for presentation. If presenter

starts late or ends early, the kids have to stay in their assigned area to avoid interrupting the other presentations.

Page 12: BLAINE SAFETY CAMP...About Safety Camp 20th Annual Safety Camp Co-Sponsored by Police, Fire, and Parks & Recreation GOAL: Have fun while learning how to be safe; injury prevention

Counselor Responsibilities, cont.

■ Many presentations need YOUR help! Most presenters will include you as part of their presentation. Please accommodate them!

■ Keep track of children that leave the group for bathroom (portopotty’s), refreshments, or just take off. Go with them if they must leave group.

■ If a child is too disruptive, remove him/her from the group and talk to a coordinator (Andrea, Shari, Dan). Coordinators will take responsibility for sick or problem children.

■ Don’t give up on tough/difficult kids – they are the ones who need this information the most!

■ Handle behavior problems while presenters are teaching –presenters shouldn’t have to. Use flag as reward item.

■ Help each other out. Remember you are a team, please work as one and take equal responsibility with the children and your duties as counselors. (Meals, check-in, check-out.)

■ You also need to stay with your group during the presentation!

Page 13: BLAINE SAFETY CAMP...About Safety Camp 20th Annual Safety Camp Co-Sponsored by Police, Fire, and Parks & Recreation GOAL: Have fun while learning how to be safe; injury prevention

Counselor Responsibilities, cont■ Name your team and have a team song. Keep it positive. No

boo-ing. We want “good” competition. ■ Flag etiquette, it’s a flag, not a javelin. ■ If someone gets hurt, please notify a Coordinator. ■ Please role model appropriate behavior and relationships.

■ Do not allow children to sit on your lap or give piggy back rides.■ Check-in/Check-out kids. Please be responsible.■ At the end of the day, Counselors need to stay with their team

until ALL kids have checked out. (The “Where is my kid…” issue.) ■ Remind children to wear their t-shirts and swimsuits on

Wednesday. (Please bring YOUR swimsuit, too!)■ Be in swimming pool locker rooms with your group .■ Do a sweep of the locker rooms at end of Water Safety.■ Remember, this is “SAFETY” Camp!■ Biggest responsibility ~ HAVE FUN, we are here for the kids!

Alphabet ShuffleIn order to help the creatively challenged and also to speed up

the Awards Ceremony, we are encouraging counselors to have their teams practice the “Alphabet Shuffle”.

The object of this activity is to see how quickly the participants can line up alphabetically by last name.It is also a good icebreaker for getting acquainted!Do right away on Wednesday morning upon arrival, between presentations, down time, etc.
